[OVERVIEW]
Thanks to its great defensive typing and excellent Defense stat, Skarmory is one of the best physical walls in the tier, able to check many physical attackers like Excadrill, Weavile, Mega Lopunny, Mega Scizor, and Landorus-T. Skarmory also has access to many utility moves, like Spikes to wear down foes as they switch in, Roost to stay healthy, and Whirlwind to phase foes. Skarmory does, however, have very low HP and Special Defense stats, making it vulnerable to strong special attackers like Keldeo, Thundurus, and Mega Charizard Y, and its Flying / Steel typing leaves it vulnerable to common types in Fire and Electric.

Moves
========
Spikes is useful for wearing down foes as they switch in, especially when used with Whirlwind. Roost is used to keep Skarmory healthy and out of range of its foes' attacks. Whirlwind allows Skarmory to phaze foes, which is useful against setup sweepers like Swords Dance Mega Pinsir and Excadrill, and prevent Substitute Serperior from using it as setup fodder. Alternatively, Defog removes entry hazards like Stealth Rock and opposing Spikes. Brave Bird does decent damage versus threats like Serperior and Tornadus-T, whereas Counter can be used to handle physical attackers that Skarmory likes to come in on like Swords Dance Excadrill, Mega Lopunny, and Weavile.
Set Details
========
Maximum HP and Defense investment helps Skarmory check a wide range of physical attackers like Weavile, Excadrill, Mega Pinsir, Mega Lopunny, Bisharp, Mega Scizor, and many more. Rocky Helmet is used to punish and chip Pokemon that use contact moves, such U-turn Landorus-T and Mega Scizor, Iron Head Excadrill, and Meteor Mash Mega Metagross. Sturdy is chosen to allow Skarmory to take any one hit from full HP and retaliate with a Whirlwind or Counter. If you use Counter over Brave Bird, a Bold nature can be used to lower damage taken from confusion and Foul Play. Skarmory also has the option to run a more specially defensive EV spread to better take attacks from Mega Diancie, Latios, Tornadus-T, and other special attackers.
Usage Tips
========
Skarmory's two main roles are to lay Spikes and check physical attackers. Keep Skarmory healthy with Roost to reliably switch into attacks and use Whirlwind on threats that are trying to set up, such as Swords Dance Excadrill and Pinsir and Calm Mind Clefable without Thunderbolt or Flamethrower. Take advantage of Sturdy to eat any one hit and retaliate with a Counter or Whirlwind. Be wary of strong Fire- and Electric-type coverage moves such as Fire Blast from Garchomp, Flamethrower from Clefable, Heat Wave from Tornadus-T, and Thunder Punch from Mega Metagross. Try to scout for these moves by using Roost when expecting Skarmory to be hit by one or switching out. Also, be wary of Magnezone, which can come in and trap Skarmory with Magnet Pull. Skarmory can use Whirlwind as it comes in or simply double switch out.
Team Options
========
Skarmory is best used on bulkier team archetypes like stall and balance. Chansey can help Skarmory take on special attacks while appreciating Skarmory's ability to soak up physical attacks. Gastrodon deals with Electric-types like Magnezone and Fire-types like Heatran. Gliscor can help Skarmory deal with Fire-types like Heatran, acts as a status absorber, and appreciates Skarmory baiting Magnezone to lock itself into an Electric-type move so it can set up with Swords Dance. Clefable is also able to absorb status moves like Will-O-Wisp from Rotom-W and can cripple threats like Heatran with a Thunder Wave or Knock Off. Choice Scarf Tyranitar can help eliminate hazard removers like Latios and Latias to keep Skarmory's Spikes up. Amoonguss resists Electric-type moves and deals with threatening Water-types like Keldeo. It also has access to Spore to put common shared switch-ins like Heatran to sleep. Offensive Pokemon like Alakazam, Serperior, and Bisharp appreciate Skarmory's Spikes, as they put foes in range of their attacks.

Other Options
========
Shed Shell is a viable item to avoid being trapped by Magnezone. Iron Head hits Fairy-types like Clefable and Mega Diancie. Toxic slowly wears down common switch-ins like Rotom-W, Thundurus, and Zapdos. Taunt can be used over Brave Bird or Counter to stop entry hazards like Sticky Webs, Stealth Rock, and opposing Spikes. Taunt also stops foes' healing moves like Soft-Boiled from Chansey and Clefable and setup moves like Calm Mind.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Electric-type Pokemon and Moves**: Thundurus is able to switch into Skarmory and threaten it with a Thunderbolt. Zapdos and Rotom-W can safely switch into Skarmory and threaten it with an Electric-type move like Discharge or Volt Switch, respectively; Will-O-Wisp from Rotom-W is also problematic. Electric-type coverage moves, such as Thunder Punch from Mega Metagross and Thunderbolt from Mega Latias and Clefable, can all threaten Skarmory as well.
**Fire-types Pokemon and Moves**: Fire-types like Mega Charizard Y, Heatran, and Volcarona are able to switch into Skarmory and OHKO it with their STAB moves. Fire-type coverage moves like Fire Blast from Garchomp and Slowbro, Hidden Power Fire from Serperior and Mega Diancie, Heat Wave from Tornadus-T, and Flamethrower from Clefable can all threaten Skarmory as well.
**Magnezone**: Magnezone is one of the biggest threats to Skarmory, as it is able to trap Skarmory thanks to Magnet Pull and eliminate it with an Electric-type move like Thunderbolt or Volt Switch.
**Strong Special Attackers**: Strong special attackers like Keldeo, Choice Specs Latios, and Serperior can all threaten and break through Skarmory due to its low Special Defense stat.
**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-type Pokemon such as Quagsire, Jellicent, Slowbro, and Suicune can all switch into Skarmory and threaten it with a burn from Scald.
