Here’s what I’m thinking

Option 3 or 4 is the best option imo. Once we have a proper VR, that will be the future of ZU, so the tour should accurately reflect on that.

Whether to decide on 3 or 4 should be based on if people feel like the drops new VR will be more similar to Volk’s VR of not. If people think the mons that drop will be similar to Volk’s, then we should do option 4 since those two metas will be similar. If people think not as many mons will drop, then we should stick with option 3.

Also due to complete nonsense being discussed in the discord earlier today I want to advise all submitters that when deciding the cutoff, don’t think about how the drops will affect ZU at all. This is a PU VR and only a PU VR. “I think this mon should stay in PU because it will be broken in ZU” is not a valid argument to keep something in PU and goes completely against Smogon’s tiering philosophy. Determine the ranks and cutoff based on PU viability alone, not based on ZU. For example, everyone knows Arbok isn’t PU worthy, so don’t put it in a PU ranked tier just because you don’t like it in ZU

Hey all, me again with a PU VR update. So here's the deal, we got 13 revised VRs submitted out of 16 qualifiers (3 chose not to submit).

Here's the spreadsheet with the data.

If you scroll to the right, you'll see the mean, median, and mode ranks for the Pokemon. I calculated these for all the Pokemon ranked by at least 7 (at least half) of the respondents. Everything beneath that says "not worth" was because they were ranked by 4 or less respondents so I just kind of eyeballed the order there since they're D/E/F ranks anyway. I've screenshotted said data for you so you don't even half to click on the spreadsheet link if you don't want to lol.

pu vr snapshot.PNG

You'll notice that there's some movement between spots from the last VR, but nothing toooo crazy. But now comes the question of what ranks to assign everything and where the cutoff point should be. I'll ignore the letter assignments for now and just talk about where the cutoff point should be, because that's what everyone cares more about anyway I think. Here's two different perspectives on the matter. These are not the only options obviously, you can think of whatever you want to be the cutoff point. They're just the two that Volk and I discussed.

Perspective #1: The cutoff point should be between Gastly and Slowpoke (13/14)
The way the data shakes out, there are some pretty good cutoff points between "tiers." Not including subranks here.

Tier 1 (S):
Nidoqueen

Tier 2 (A):
Pinsir
Fearow
Staryu
Rapidash

Tier 3 (B):
Seaking
Drowzee
Dragonair
Machamp
Abra
Omanyte
Graveler
Gastly

Tier 4 (C):
Slowpoke
Arcanine
Vileplume
Magmar
Sandslash
Poliwag

Tier 5 (D):
Weepinbell
Arbok
Electrode
Primeape

This is for all intents and purposes almost the exact same as the VR on the previous page that people were generally unhappy with, but mathematically it's how the data shakes out and makes a lot of sense. So we could go the route of saying "hey, we may not like it, but that's what the data says, and we're sticking to it." Alternatively, you have the following perspective...

Perspective #2: The cutoff point should be between Vileplume and Magmar (16/17)
Why this cutoff specifically? It's because I think it generally reflects what "the people" want more than other cutoffs. If you look at the data, you'll see that the average cutoff point that people wanted was around 15.5 Pokemon in PU. I rounded up from there to make 16, and thus the top 16 Pokemon are PU, with Vileplume being the last one included. I understand Vileplume is very polarizing, some people think it's great, some think it sucks, but again, this number was picked based off the data that I was given, not any kind of bias one way or the other. I think with this cutoff it would be harder to assign meaningful subranks/letters, but again, it might better reflect what "the people" want than Perspective #1. There's also the possibility of...

Perspective #?: Something else
Idk, argue for a better idea than one of the two I listed above. But whatever you do...

Please post/discuss with only PU in mind. Whether something could drop to ZU and how it would impact that metagame should not color your thought process here.

Hopefully we can come to a community consensus that makes the most sense and makes the most people happy within the coming days. I'm not discouraging you from chatting about it in Discord, but it'll make things a lot easier if you post coherent thoughts on the forums so I can better keep track of what everyone is thinking.

Thanks!

Work!
The largest 'gap' is between Gastly and Slowpoke, so I think that should be the cutoff. That 3 point gap is only matched by the Rapidash/Seaking gap, which is another gap the community has recognized between the great mons and the good mons. This is also 13 mons which matches OU and is rather similar to anticipated updates for UU once the VR shifts the sleepers down. Each gap represents different rankings of the community's thoughts on the mons.

The other gap I could see taking is the Slowpoke/Arcanine one, which is over 1 point and suggests a more significant in quality between Slowpoke/Arcanine than Vileplume/Magmar. Y'all know my thoughts about plume though so please don't make me rant about it.

The answer is just obvious, right?
There's a very large gap in every metric between Gastly and Slowpoke. I don't see a reason not to draw the cutoff there. If we decide to put it lower down on the list we'll just be getting into The Opinion Zone, which will just cause even more bickering and delays.

I agree that the cutoff should be gastly/slowpoke. Cutoffs have never been determined by how the drops will affect the tier below. "I don't like slowpoke in ZU" isn't a reason to keep it in PU. You can clearly tell by mean and median that that's the largest gap in the VR apart from Rapidash/Seaking. Although I personally think Slowpoke is a PU-worthy Pokemon, the data derived from players who are better than me in PU and got the requirements to have a say in the VR says otherwise, so I will not object to it being in ZU. There has been so much nonsense about the debate regarding this cutoff and there's only one correct answer: Gastly and above is PU, Slowpoke and below is ZU. Data and rankings are way more objective than your opinion.

Alright it's been a few days and it looks like we're going with Gastly as the last Pokemon in PU. Thanks again to everyone for the productive discussion on the forums and on Discord. As far as subranks go, I don't think they'll be toooooo controversial (because at the end of the day they don't reeeaallly matter a whole lot as long as the order is right) but if you have any beef with what I assigned sound off in the comments below and be sure to hit that like button, subscribe, and follow the channel for more updates. Anyway, here's your VR:

Thanks again to everyone who helped make this possible!

I'm glad that's all settled. The overall list of PU Pokemon hasn't changed at all, which is good, and to be expected. I of course agree with the Main Rankings and the cutoff — they were my suggestion. However, while the exact spacing of the subranks isn't super important, I do want to say I do not agree with the boundary lines that were drawn.

Here is my interpretation of the data:

S
Nidoqueen

A
Pinsir
Fearow
Staryu
Rapidash

B1
Seaking
Drowzee

B2
Dragonair
Machamp

B3
Abra
Omanyte
Graveler
Gastly

C
Slowpoke
Arcanine
Vileplume
Magmar
Sandslash
Poliwag

D
Weepinbell
Arbok
Electrode
Primeape

Why I'm Suggesting These Changes:

Rapidash A2 ->A1, dissolve A2
While I personally think Rapidash belongs a half-step behind Pinsir, Fearow, and Staryu, the data doesn't indicate that at all. Each mean gap between the Pokemon in A Rank is less than 0.5. They are all roughly equally spaced, so there is no need to suddenly cut off the last one. In fact, the gap between Staryu and Fearow is bigger than the gap between Staryu and Rapidash, so drawing a line between the latter but not the former doesn't make any sense. Moreover, you can see all four Pokemon in A hover around the same media value, all being 3 or 4. This suggests they are all relatively interchangeable on the whole.

Gastly B4 -> B3, dissolve B4
We have a very similar case here as we do with Rapidash and A Rank. Gastly is closer to Graveler than Graveler is to Omanyte, so splitting the rank here instead of there doesn't make sense. If anything, Graveler should join Gastly in B4. However, the median data once again suggests that these four Pokemon (Abra, Omanyte, Graveler, and Gastly) clustered largely on top of each other. The small mean gaps and non-existent median gaps suggest they should all be ranked together.

Dissolve C2 Rank
I don't understand why the gap between C1 and C2 was drawn between Arcanine and Vileplume. The two largest gaps (by far) in this set of six Pokemon are between Slowpoke and Arcanine and between Vileplume and Magmar. Drawing a line in either of these two places makes more sense. Personally though, I wouldn't draw any lines in the C Rank at all. Like A Rank, every gap aside from the two I just mentioned are less than 0.5, showing that the Pokemon are roughly equally spaced. I think drawing a line right after Slowpoke (making it the sole member of C1) would make the most sense if I had to draw a line anywhere, but the median data suggests a singular tier is more appropriate. Slowpoke shares its median value with Arcanine and Vileplume and the median value continues largely in sequence to the rest of the tier without skipping any numbers. Just like in the other two cases, the small mean gaps and non-existent median gaps suggest there is no reason to divide this tier at all. If for some reason it should be divided, it should be right after Slowpoke or right after Vileplume.

That's my take at least. Cheers!

Nidoqueen

A
Pinsir
Fearow
Staryu
Rapidash

B1
Seaking
Drowzee

B2
Dragonair
Machamp

B3
Abra
Omanyte
Graveler
Gastly

C
Slowpoke
Arcanine
Vileplume
Magmar
Sandslash
Poliwag

D
Weepinbell
Arbok
Electrode
Primeape

Why I'm Suggesting These Changes:

Rapidash A2 ->A1, dissolve A2
While I personally think Rapidash belongs a half-step behind Pinsir, Fearow, and Staryu, the data doesn't indicate that at all.

Gastly B4 -> B3, dissolve B4

Cheers!
Sorry for the delay on this but yeah looks good to me, and looks good to pretty much everyone else from what I understand. Feel free to update the OP accordingly with this VR!

Work!
Per tiering changes in NU (that are now official), :y/porygon: has dropped!

Nidoqueen Earthquake vs. Porygon: 119-141 (35.7 - 42.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
I'm glad we have a fairly consistent switch into Nidoqueen... until you get crit and die anyways.

Worth noting though that Pory is not save from DEdge->Beam from Fearow though (it does 95% min). Fearow is already kinda crazy and it gets more prey now.

Pory also walls some of the lower mons in the tier, notably Gastly, Omanyte, Graveler and Staryu. Seems like it'd be a pretty good Rapidash partner.

:rb/porygon: Porygod :gs/porygon:

So yeah, this is in PU now. Not gonna talk about electrode because nobody good actually used it. I think as of now this thing is gonna be top 5, but ofc I may be biased by new toy syndrome. I'm gonna be talking about the winners and losers of this drop.

:rb/fearow: Fearow is able to blast through Porygon fairy easily. Dedge into Hyper Beam is almost guaranteed to KO Porygon from full HP. Paralysis does suck tho so Fearow does have to watch out for that. Porygon is also great vs grav (see losers) so that'll be good for Fearow too

:rb/rapidash: Rapidash barely misses the 2hko on porygon, but you can secure that with a potential burn or Fire miss Spin. However, the biggest gain Rapidash gets is that Omanyte, Graveler, and waters in general are all worse from the porygon drop (again see losers). Rapidash's checks becoming worse is great news for it.

:rb/drowzee: Porygon is so slow that this fucker outspeeds it lmao. It can paralyze pory, force it out with special drops, and threaten sleep with hypnosis. It also takes barely any damage from porygon's special moves, but watch out for dedge

:rb/arcanine::rb/magmar: These guys are pretty niche now but they could see more use form Waters and Rocks being checked by porygon. Double fire, a relic from the early days of PU, could make a resurgence.

:rb/Staryu: Not the only recover user in the tier anymore. All of Porygon's stats are better than Staryu's except Speed. It's stronger and much, much bulkier, both physically and specially. Porygon's existence will easily push Staryu out of the top 5, possibly even lower.

:rb/omanyte::rb/graveler: Porygon takes under 50% from these guys' stabs, so it can switch in and spam recover. Both grav and oma also have awful speed, even more awful than porygon's, meaning Porygon outspeeds them too. Graveler exploding on porygon seems tempting but have fun dealing with fearow after you blow up.

:rb/gastly:
Once Gastly gets hypnosis off, porygon walls it forever, and although gastly doesn't take a lot from porygon's special moves, it's unable to recover off the damage while also not being able to threaten in return. Also funny calc if you're thinking "just explode lol"
Gastly Explosion vs. Porygon: 172-203 (51.6 - 60.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

:rb/abra: Hey what happens if mons that hate psychic like graveler and gastly become worse, while drowzee and mons that outspeed and ohko abra like Fearow and the Fire types become better? Well, that's not good for Abra.

:rb/nidoqueen: The damage Porygon takes from earthquake can be recovered off very easily, meaning there is now a safe switch-in to Nidoqueen, something that didn't exist previously. Porygon does have to watch out for crits though so it's not super, consistent or anything, but as far as checks to the tier queen go, it's defnitely one of the better ones. However, fires being better means more EQ targets for Nidoqueen, and also Nidoqueen can possibly crit through Porygon since it's immune to twave, although Ice Beam is scary. Leaning towards Nidoqueen being Worse

:rb/pinsir: Pinsir can break through Pory fairy easily, Slash into submission is a roll, but you can use bind to get it into range if you wanna risk it. However, if the Fire-Types make a resurgence, then Pinsir might struggle. Remember that Pinsir wasn't very good in the firespam meta, and only became a beast once the fire-types fell off, meaning Pinsir might go back to where it once was. Leaning towards Pinsir being Worse

:rb/Seaking: Staryu being worse and fires being better seem great for Seaking at first, until you realize that Porygon walls Seaking just like how Staryu did. Lack of resistances are made up for by better special bulk, and Porygon takes much less from Hyper Beam compared to Staryu. Seaking does outspeed Porygon though, which was not true for Staryu. Leaning towards Seaking being Better

:rb/machamp: Woah look let's use the super cool fighting type to beat the amazing normal types! Where have we seen this before? Machamp outspeeds and smacks the shit out of porygon, but Submission doesn't OHKO sadly. Low kick is an almost guaranteed 2HKO tho if you wanna go for the swag flinch. The problem is that Machamp didn't have to run any fighting moves in pre-porygon PU, so now it has to probably give up a move slot that actually had a good move in it for shitmission. Machamp also doesn't have to do all the work when it comes to checking Nidoqueen now, which is good. Leaning towards Machamp being better

:rb/dragonair: i have no idea how to rank this thing lmao, it's just something i forget exists until it perfectly fits my team then fucks up the opponent, or misses 3 wraps in a row. I guess it has another form of wrap fodder, but the rise in fast mons doesn't really help, more twave targets tho. Leaning towards Dragonair being worse.

In terms of Porygon sets, I recover and twave are mandatory. I think then you'll want to run ice beam, and your fourth option is probably dedge? After accomdating for STAB Porygon's attack is roughly 115, so a 100 BP move coming off of that is pretty strong (think slightly stronger than Lax EQ). Tbolt is tempting because of boltbeam coverage but it's only really good against waters, and the only one which threatens it is Staryu with Thunder Wave. Ofc this means you're walled by omanyte, which may be a problem on firespam teams, so I think you should use tbolt on those. Sharpen over ice beam to #SharpenSweep might be a funny option, but make sure you deal with Gastly beforehand.

5 Dollar Foot Long Porygon.jpg

It's been a bit over a week since Porygod dropped. While the full extent of its influence has yet to be seen, I feel we have a good enough grasp on the short-term impact Porygon will have. It's clear that with Recover, a Normal typing, and decent bulk, Porygon has the best defensive profile out of any Pokemon in PU.

Nidoqueen Earthquake vs. Porygon: 119-141 (35.7 - 42.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Nidoqueen Submission vs. Porygon: 129-152 (38.7 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (Bad but it's Queen's strongest move here)

Fearow Hyper Beam vs. Porygon: 189-223 (56.7 - 66.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Fearow Double-Edge vs. Porygon: 127-150 (38.1 - 45%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Pinsir Slash vs. Porygon on a critical hit: 145-171 (43.5 - 51.3%) -- 5.9% chance to 2HKO

Pinsir Submission vs. Porygon: 171-202 (51.3 - 60.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Rapidash Fire Blast vs. Porygon: 135-159 (40.5 - 47.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Rapidash Hyper Beam vs. Porygon: 136-160 (40.8 - 48%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Seaking Surf vs. Porygon: 107-126 (32.1 - 37.8%) -- 95.1% chance to 3HKO

Seaking Hyper Beam vs. Porygon: 128-151 (38.4 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Abra Psychic vs. Porygon: 120-142 (36 - 42.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Graveler Earthquake vs. Porygon: 132-156 (39.6 - 46.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Omanyte Surf vs. Porygon: 114-135 (34.2 - 40.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Gastly Psychic vs. Porygon: 78-92 (23.4 - 27.6%) -- 76.8% chance to 4HKO

This isn't a list of every relevant attacker in the tier, but more a sample of Porygon's sheer defensive power. Previously unwallable foes like Nidoqueen have suddenly found themselves stopped in their tracks. While some offensive Pokemon like Pinsir and Fearow can break through Porygon reliably, they usually end up at least crippled by its Thunder Wave. Thus, in my opinion, Porygon makes the tier much more top-heavy, for one big reason:

Rapidash, Arcanine, and Fearow are now insane.

While the tier was always dominated by Rapidash and Fearow, the Rock-types served as strong checks, denying the duo progress while forcing progress on their teammates as they switched out. The Rocks weren't perfect, as Graveler only reliably checked Fearow, while Omanyte relied on prediction, but the fact of the matter is that these Rocks checked Rapidash and Fearow and lacked switch-ins that could wall them at 0 cost.

Porygon completely flips this aspect of the metagame. It isn't 2HKOed by any of Omanyte and Graveler's attacks, is immune to paraslam, and can stay healthy with Recover. Admittedly Omayte struggled to do anything against threats like Staryu and Gastly, but it could at least make some lasting impact against them with Body Slam or Surf, unlike Porygon who doesn't mind anything it dishes out. The best Graveler can do is Explode, which does either KO Porygon or leave it with too little health to do anything else, but this still stops Gravgod from doing its one purpose, countering Fearow. And to make matters worse, while Arcanine is still outclassed by Rapidash, Omanyte no longer being able to punish its use makes it extremely good all of a sudden. I'll refer to Rapidash/Arcanine/Fearow as "the trio" for brevity's sake.

With the advent of Porygon, in order to beat the trio you generally have to out-offense them, which is very difficult. Nidoqueen can beat one of these threats one-on-one, but it still doesn't have the easiest time breaking through Porygon, and the inevitable opposing Nidoqueen ends up evening things out anyways. Otherwise, other offensive threats like Pinsir and Abra just get bodied by the sheer power and bulk of the trio.

Thus, to out-offense the trio you need to use them, which heavily overcentralizes the meta. While at the moment I don't see Arcanine as mandatory, and it's debatable as to whether or not the opportunity cost of not using Rapidash and Porygon is too high, I feel that the meta is trending in a direction which I don't think is healthy. I could see it ending up as a slugfest where the trio and Nidoqueen just speed tie and crit each other until one team wins.

Porygon has one other source of centralization I hinted to earlier. The majority of the tier can't reliably break through it before it can paralyze them in return, while Ground-types such as Nidoqueen usually lose the 1v1 due to Porygon's Ice Coverage. This makes Porygon fairly hard to switch into, and very difficult to break past. Paralysis works well to enable wallbreakers, though besides Drowzee and itself, most Thunder Wave users tend hate paralysis even more than Porygon does. To make matters worse, most wallbreakers are either the trio themselves, or are easily overwhelmed by them. Defensively Porygon at the moment looks to be pretty borderline, given that half of the time it's only eliminated by either trading paralysis with itself or getting crit.

Now should Porygon be banned? While it sounds really bad, it's just way too early to say. The meta is still developing, and new ways to build against Porygon and its onslaught may develop. In practice Porygon isn't as bad either, as it its tendency to spam Recover makes it vulnerable to crits, while its switch ins are very telegraphed. Paralysis also shuts it down pretty hard.

It's also essential to mention that the Rocks, or at least Omanyte, aren't totally unviable. It's just that their lack of progress seriously limits the teams they can be used on. They still wall the trio, they just fit on way fewer teams.

Ultimately, I liked the old metagame much, much more than this one, and while I think Porygon is making the tier unbalanced, we need to wait for this meta to settle before doing something as drastic. Otherwise, thanks to everyone for reading this post, and have a nice night.

Well the tour is almost over so I'd like to drop a VR. Hot takes included

Screen Shot 2023-05-16 at 10.27.50 PM.png

Fearow is able to blast through every non-rock type of the tier relatively easily. Every non-resist not named Sandslash, Machamp, or Pinsir is KOed by dedge + dedge + beam, and Machamp and Pinsir are both extremely favorable rolls for being KOed by 2 drill pecks (98.2 and 96.8% respectively). Since Fearow outspeeds everything except Rapidash, anything that switches in will probably get hit twice. Fearow also has a pretty high crit rate thanks to its base 100 speed. Crit dedge into HB (or drill peck for machamp and pinsir) also kills most non-rocks, making switching in even more precarious. (ik this sounds a lot like the fearow analysis, but guess who wrote it)

Nidoqueen is still an amazing Pokemon, don't get me wrong. It has incredible offensive and defensive capabilities, with a powerful STAB Earthquake along with coverage that hits the entire tier. The reason why I don't have Nidoqueen at #1 is not because it's bad, it's just that Fearow is better. Fearow's speed is super important. It outspeeds things such as Pinsir and Staryu, both of which give Nidoqueen a hard time. Nidoqueen also has a harder time against Porygon. Nidoqueen is unable to 2HKO it, while for Fearow, dedge into HB is a roll, and Fearow's higher crit rate makes it likelier to crit through. Nidoqueen's Bulk makes it kind of like a tank, where it fires off attacks and takes hits kinda well, but it will eventually get worn down. Fearow on the other hand, is capable of blasting through things without taking a single hit.

Now what about Graveler? Well don't act like Nidoqueen doesn't have its checks too. Machamp and Pinsir are pretty good vs Nidoqueen, the former is only really scared of being burned by Fire Blast, while the Latter can survive an EQ into fire blast, and since it outspeeds, it can get 2 slashes off before dying, not minding burn as much since slash ignores burn. Now regarding Graveler, although it does counter Fearow, it has to deal porygon. That motherfucker outspeeds grav so it can switch in and spam recover. Grav can't even crit through pory reliably since their crit rate is ass. Porygon dropping to PU has made grav a lot worse for sure. Another thing is that Machamp and Pinsir are great Pokemon anyway even outside of checking Nidoqueen, while Graveler would surely be unviable if Fearow did not exist. Machamp and Pinsir are also used a lot more, so Nidoqueen is more likely to face them than fearow is to face grav. The fact that Graveler is viable at all is a testament to how great Fearow is.

Overall, I believe Fearow is better than Nidoqueen because I value Fearow's speed and offensive prowess more than Nidoqueen's bulk and coverage. Nidoqueen has been the unchallenged, unquestioned #1 since the tier's inception, but I think the meta has evolved to the point where this may not be true anymore. Also now every non-uber tier has a normal type at #1 :tauros: :kangaskhan: :clefable: :fearow: which is pretty cool

:rapidash: can be explained by a quote from Gangsta Spongebob
Screen Shot 2023-05-16 at 9.39.32 PM.png

The fact that it can destroy everything in its path puts it at #3, the fact that it can miss fire blast 5 times then die is why it's not #2 or #1.

:staryu: Surprised that this thing was able to still dominate even post-pory dropping. Turns out that being a water-type in a tier dominated by fire- and ground-types is pretty good to have in a tier. I expected pory to outclass it but I would honestly say speed and water STAB make it the better of the two twave/recover users. Staryu is also good since all the twave immunes hate surf.

:drowzee: I keep forgetting how busted this guy is until I use it. It's able to spam twave and near-unresisted psychics. The few twave immunes hate psychic similar to how they hate staryu's surf. Stoss hits the psychic resists for a ton of damage since they're all LCs with shit HP stats. Then if that's not good enough for you, you also have the 60% accurate OHKO move. You are NOT waking up in PU.

:porygon: PU's newest member has adjusted well to the tier as a supporter for all the broken offensive threats. It can switch into the passive rocks which wall these offensive threats, which makes them much easier to handle. Recover is broken too so that alone also makes Pory easily A-rank

:arcanine: Idk if pory dropping made this good or it was just being slept on earlier, but damn is Arcanine good. The best water-type in the tier is horrible vs fire-types, meaning Arcanine is one of the best Rapidash checks in the tier. On top of that, its extra bulk vs dash helps vs mons like Fearow (although arcanine is slower).

:dragonair: Dnair is something that I just slap on a team when I need a sixth. It's just an all-around fantastic utility Pokemon. Being slower than nidoqueen sucks tho, but at least it has blizz. It also has twave, and wrap is always an annoyance, and a good way to get stuff like Fearow and Rapidash in safely.

:machamp: Best nidoqueen check in the tier, still a fantastic mon outside of checking Nidoqueen. It can also use fighting moves to smack the shit out of pory. Incredibly bulky and hits hard, it's just really slow which holds it back.

:pinsir: Look how they massacared my boy. From #2 in the tier to down here. Fearow and Fire-Types being amazing is really bad for it, and Slash isn't hitting as hard anymore due to bulkier mons like Arc rising. That slash still hits really hard though, and it's decent vs Nidoqueen, but sucks against Fearow.

:seaking: Another victim of porygon dropping. I'm probably harder on seaking than most other people because i don't know how to use it properly and have only ever used it on shit teams. I just feel being walled by Staryu and Porygon is pretty bad, and if you want a Water-Type Staryu is generally a better option, unless you're weak to fire-types, then you can try seaking. There are better options though, like you can use arc to check opposing rapidash. However agility Seaking is still a devestating late-game threat that can destroy a weakened team.

:gastly: Gastly is much better in practice than it is on paper. On paper it doesn't sound so good due to shaky matchups vs fearow and fires, and the unreliability of hypnosis, but when you use it in a game, you see the value it adds to your team.

:sandslash: This replay shows how a well-played Sandslash can fuck shit up, this might be higher honestly but it's hard to judge due to the little tournament play it's seen.

:magmar: swagmar is best seen in the lead slot honestly. You use fire blast than mix and match to create a customized combination of psychic/body slam/confuse ray/hyper beam/seismic toss/counter to make the most unpredictable comination possible. However it's frailer and slower than both other fire-types, so i'd suggest only using it in the lead slot to create unpredictability from turn 1. Coverage is less important due to oma being less relavant, so you want dash or arc most of the time, but mag has its place.

:graveler: gonna copypaste from my "why fearow is #1 explanation: "although it does counter Fearow, it has to deal porygon. That motherfucker outspeeds grav so it can switch in and spam recover. Grav can't even crit through pory reliably since their crit rate is ass. Porygon dropping to PU has made grav a lot worse for sure."

:omanyte: grav but more passive, can't boom on porygon, and lower physical bulk does matter vs fearow. However, it is THE best check to Rapidash and Arcanine, so it does have its spot.
:abra: insanely frail, just use the fire-types honestly if you want a special attacker, they're stronger, faster, and bulkier. If you really hate omanyte for some reason, Magmar is right there instead. Also I've considered a rock alongside abra mandatory for a while now to switch into fearow and fires, so rocks being worse doesn't do it any favors.
:slowpoke: decent lead, but i find it hard to justify using as a lead over dragonair, who also resists fire and can use twave. I guess amnesia is good for re-applying para, but amnesia doesn't really do much with 40 base special.
:poliwag: too frail, 90 base speed misses important benchmarks in pu such as fearow and fires. also suffers from the 40 base special issue that slowpoke does.
:scyther: worse pinsir, but it does outspeed fearow which could maybe give it some kind of niche somewhere
:arbok: seems good on paper, struggles in practice, bad typing and speed hold it back
:primeape: machamp without defensive utility. Like poliwag, 95 base speed isn't fast enough. In NU it's good since it outspeeds the base 90 speed tier, but in PU it's still left in the dust by Rapidash and Fearow, which sucks.
:weepinbell::vileplume: grasses are bad, use drowzee, weep is better because of razor leaf, but Vileplume has bulk. Their best use is walling surfbolt staryu and blizzless seaking, which can be helpful, but they suck against Fearow and fires.

:pidgeot: could be used alongside fearow, but pinsir is better for this
:onix: Rapidash Fire Blast vs. Onix on a critical hit: 206-243 (75.4 - 89%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
:butterfree: would love 10 more base speed to outspeed nidoqueen
:magneton: gastly is a better electric type
:muk: explosion and... that's it
:tentacool: ok hydro can ohko rapidash, what else do you do
:hitmonlee: outclassed by an outclassed mon
:parasect: outclassed by vileshit

Lastly, since this thread is kinda dead, I want to try to revive it a bit, since we're reaching the end of a pretty big tournament! Because of this, I propose a few questions to be discussed:

1. How do you feel about Porygon dropping to PU? How do you think it has impacted the meta? What mons stand out to you as the winners/losers of this drop?

2. Are there any underrated mons that you have had success using? Are there any mons you think are overrated?

3. Drop a personal VR on the tier! This isn't anything official, I just think it will be interesting to see how people's opinions on the tier differ.

1. I dislike the addition. Porygon has facilitated the offensive threats (fearow, rapidash) so much due to being able to sit on their counters. This has turned PU into a very offensive tier. I wouldn't consider Porygon banworthy though, it's just a nusiance. The winners of the drop are defnitely the offensive threats it facilitates, such as Fearow, Arcanine, and Rapidash, while the losers are the afformentioned rocks, and also Pinsir, since it struggles in a meta dominated by Fearow and Fire-Types

2. I've been having fun with Magmar. Lead magmar has gotten me some cheese kills. I think Seaking is a bit overrated, since it's hard to enable due to the pervalence of Porygon and Staryu.

3. see above lol

I've already stated my thoughts on Pory, but I really ought to answer the other 2 questions on Gastlies's post

my-image (3).png

Pokemon are ordered by viability in each sub-rank

I actually think Nidoqueen and Fearow are about equal, the tiermaker just doesn't let me specify that. It's hard to find differences in viability between Pokemon that are already mandatory.
RBY PU.png
:rg/nidoqueen: :y/nidoqueen: :rb/nidoqueen:

I'd say Nidoqueen's greatness comes from its bulk and coverage. It's really hard to 2HKO without a super effective attack, while it can 2HKO you back thanks to its great coverage. Its Speed is far from ideal, but I'd argue that's largely because the ability to outspeed Nidoqueen is super important; you really need a good reason to use a Pokemon that's slower than it. That being said, Porygon somewhat walling Nidoqueen combined with the new, faster PU it brought doesn't look that good for Nidoqueen, though the Queen's immunity to Thunder Wave is now more important than ever as a result of all this.

:rg/fearow: :y/fearow: :rb/fearow:

Fearow is basically the inverse of Nidoqueen as an offensive threat. While Nidoqueen is a slower, bulkier Pokemon that uses its excellent coverage to surgically remove pieces of the opposing team, Fearow is absurdly fast and just slams its head on the target until either of them die. This thing hits ridiculously hard and often isn't that easy to 2HKO. However, its best trait is its absurd crit rate, which I swear is close to 50%. A Crit Hyper Beam just deletes everything isn't Rock, Ghost, or Nidoqueen. I've had games when I basically gave up but then Fearow said "fuck it we ball" and Crit 3 times in a row. While the Rocks do somewhat stop it, their decline as a result of Porygon only solidifies its place in S.

:rg/porygon: :y/porygon: :rb/porygon:

See here, but tldr; Porygod is absurdly hard to break through without being paralyzed and at the same time spreads paralysis like no one's business. It also ruined literally everything and I hate its guts.

I consider the Pokemon here as meta-defining and extremely hard to drop. A+ should have >50% usage minimum.

:rg/rapidash: :y/rapidash: :rb/rapidash:

Between Fire Blast, Fire Spin, and ParaSlam, Rapidash is arguably more of a ballin mon than Fearow. The difference is that Rapidash needs at least some RNG to not be useless, unlike Fearow which RNG only makes better. I've had plenty of games where Dash missed twice and died, though I've also had games where I paralyzed and crit everything into oblivion. Dash also suffers by having a hard wall in Omnayte, which doesn't mind anything it can throw at it, unlike Fearow who can somewhat crit past Omanyte and Graveler. However, with Porygon making the Rocks worse, Rapidgod is better. Specifically, Porygon prevents opposing players from using Omanyte to punish its use, which is why Rapidash extremely hard to drop now.

:rg/drowzee: :y/drowzee: :rb/drowzee:

While the faster PU could've spelt doom for Drowzee, it actually finds itself even better. Thunder Wave is now even more in demand, and its Hypnosis and Psychic let it almost always leave a mark on the opposing team. However, Drowzee's best trait is that it eats Porygon alive, as at best Porygon can paralyze it and 3HKO with Double-Edge, letting Drowzee switch in pretty easily. Drowzee isn't perfect, but its ability to turn the tables on arguably the best defensive piece in the tier, and at the same time not be useless elsewhere, is nothing short of excellent.

:rg/staryu: :y/staryu: :rb/staryu:

Staryu is about the same as it was previously. It's a Thunder Wave user that Nidoqueen has no hope of switching into, it threatens most of the tier with its amazing coverage, and it walls Seaking. Porygon bringing out more Thunder Wave users and making Seaking worse hurts, but it being one of those Thunder Wave users helps it too.

:rg/arcanine: :y/arcanine: :rb/arcanine:

I agree Gastlies, I'm honestly not sure if Arc was being slept on or if we just decided it was good after Pory dropped. At any rate, it having higher bulk than Rapidash makes it a great bulky attacker, with it able to even wall foes like Porygon and Rapidash using Reflect + Rest. As a Fire-type Rapidash is generally superior, but once again Porygon making Omanyte worse helps a great deal.

:rg/dragonair: :y/dragonair: :rb/dragonair:

Dragonair feels like one of those Pokemon everyone forgets exists, but it's really good when used. It being slower than Nidoqueen and weak to Blizzard sucks, but its own great coverage, Thunder Wave, and Wrap make it super deadly when used right. I might be exagerating how great it actually is, but it does put in work pretty consistently.

:rg/pinsir: :y/pinsir: :rb/pinsir:

While Pinsir is one of the few Pokemon that can reliably break through Porygon, behind the Rocks it probably suffered more than any other Pokemon by the shift. Rapidash, Arcanine, and Fearow, who are better now, just destroy it, while Pinsir's ability to tear through anything slower is less useful in the faster metagame. Still great, but not as plug and play as it was before.

While I'm purely theorymoning here, Swords Dance may actually be viable now. Pinsir can OHKO Porygon with a +2 Submission or Hyper Beam, and while it'd get paralyzed, it can otherwise set up in front of Pory pretty easily. However, this is much harder to pull off than just paralyzing Porygon, so it's probably not worth it.

:rg/machamp: :y/machamp: :rb/machamp:

It's hard to say if Machamp is better or worse after shifts. The faster pace poses issues due to its lower Speed, and Porygon steals the spotlight as a Nidoqueen check. However, being the only good Fighting-type makes it among the few Pokemon that can reliably 2HKO Porygon, the usefulness of which cannot be understated. While not quite A rank, Machamp is definitely better than the other B ranks, which is why it went to B+.

:rg/omanyte: :y/omanyte: :rb/omanyte:

Probably the biggest hot take you'll see from here; I'm probably the biggest Omanyte believer around. Yeah Porygon walls it to hell and back, but the ability to stave off Rapidash, Arcanine, and to a lesser extent Fearow is still exceptionally useful. It'll probably drop lower as the tier develops, though I still think it's worth using in PU.

:rg/seaking: :y/seaking: :rb/seaking:

Porygon is another wall Seaking can't easily break through, but the higher amounts of paralysis does alleviate this somewhat. It's a dangerous cleaner, but its low unboosted Speed and hard walls make it considerably worse than many offensive threats. I'd say that it's more locked into a cleaner role with 2 splashable walls that counter it.

:rg/gastly: :y/gastly: :rb/gastly:

The sheer volume of Thunder Waves may make Gastly feel like it's playing a Touhou game sometimes, but otherwise it still has its tried and true Sleep + PsyBolt combo. The biggest impact Porygon has on it, in my opinion, is that it makes Explosion practically mandatory, as the ability to take at least 51.2% from Porygon and 67.4% from Drowzee is way too important now. Otherwise, it's still a great lead or mon to surprise your opponent with in the back, but its polarizing defensive utility can bite it in the back sometimes.

:rg/abra: :y/abra: :rb/abra:

Abra took a beating when Porygon dropped. It relied on the Rocks to not get mauled my Fearow, Arcanine, and Rapidash, so Omanyte and Graveler's decline makes Abra suffer in turn. However, I do disagree with Gastlies saying it should drop to ZU (assuming B/C is the cutoff on her vr). Maybe it's my subconscious not wanting ZU to get destroyed by Abra, but I still think it has solid merits within the tier, especially since, like I said, Omanyte is still pretty good. However, it's clear Abra needs much more support than it did in the past, which is why it's so close to dropping.

:rg/sandslash: :y/sandslash: :rb/sandslash:

Sandslash is one of the best checks to Fearow in the tier, and it can steamroll through Porygon and paralyzed opponents with Swords Dance and its powerful Earthquake. Otherwise, it isn't so great. It's mediocre special bulk and weaknesses to Water and Ice make it lose to a ton of tier, and its mediocre Speed leaves it very reliant on paralysis to sweep. As a wallbreaker, it's fine but not spectacular. It should be finally leaving ZUBL, but it isn't an amazing mon in modern PU.

I'll have a shorter description here as these mons aren't that complicated or that worth talking about.

:graveler: - Gravgod suffers a lot when its one job, walling Fearow, is hamstrung by Porygon. It can Boom remove Porygon, but then Fearow goes unopposed. As the tier optimizes, switching into Fearow and then forcing a Boom on Porygon may actually be worth it, but for now it should be in ZU.

:magmar: - Swagmar is really cool as a Fire-type that can actually hurt Omanyte, but that role is even less useful now with Porygon. Otherwise, I have a really hard time justifying using it over Rapidash or Arcanine. It's a cool mon with some really unique tools, but it should stay ZU for now.

:slowpoke: - Slowpoke is a super dangerous wallbreaker with its great STABs, Thunder Wave, and Psychic, but it's super easy to overwhelm due to how fast the tier's gotten. It can put in work, but it's easy to play around and it very much is an "all-or-nothing" mon.

:poliwag: - Poliswag is the fastest Sleep user, and once it puts its target to sleep it can sweep with Amnesia. Conversely, it can easily miss Hypnosis and die due to its atrocious bulk. It's a glorified slot machine, and it really struggles due to its awful Special and Speed still losing to Rapidash, Arcanine, and Fearow, though it can get some wins through sheer surprise.

:weepinbell: - Weepinbell has Double Power, Wrap, and the occasionally useful Razor Leaf, but its atrocious Speed and low bulk holds it back a lot, especially given how common Fire-types and Fearow are here.

:vileplume: - Similar to Weepinbell but loses Wrap and Razor Leaf to instead have huge bulk, which makes it one of the few checks to Nidoqueen. Otherwise it sucks due to how passive it is, but Vilegod can be useful some of the time.

Writing a billion Minis and Analyses for these mons gave me some appreciation for them, though they still need more testing before I can definitely say that they're good.

:scyther: - Scyther is so close to being great. It Speed ties with Rapidash and can set up Swords Dance to sweep. But good god its coverage is horrendous, but if there was any time for it to be good, it'd be when the Rocks are much worse because of Porgon.

:muk: - Muk has the strongest Boom in the tier and can threaten a lot of it with its good coverage. But it's usually too slow to do anything other than use Explosion, which usually just isn't worth it on its own, though I can see it being better if used more optimally.

:pidgeot: - Pidgeot's stats honestly aren't that much worse than Fearow's, though they're still outclassed and the loss of Drill Peck hurts a lot. Pidgeot could maybe be used alongside Fearow, but I wouldn't bet on this.

:arbok: - Arbok is way too reliant on the inaccurate Glare and Wrap for its own good, and the mass of faster threats and Thunder Wave users give it lots of trouble. However, it can probably work with a lot of paralysis support.

:flareon: - This mon has the highest BST in PU but somehow finds itself outclassed by 3 other Fire-types. While the faster pace of the tier hurts it, more paralysis support could help, especially since Flareon is among the few Pokemon that can reliably 2HKO Porygon, something no other Fire-type can do.

Remember how I said c&c work gave me a newfound appreciation for some Pokemon? Others, not so much. Every fully-evolved Pokemon should be here, though if I forgot one that means it wasn't good to begin with.

:weezing: - Has worse coverage and Attack than Muk, a Pokemon that's already not very good.

:primeape: - Primeape just doesn't hit hard enough or take hits well enough to justify using it, even with its Fighting STAB.

:parasect: - Kid named Rapidash, Arcanine, and Fearow.

:butterfree: - If Buterfree could outspeed Nidoqueen or hit harder it could probably find some niche, but as it stands we have sleepers that do its job infinitely better.

:tentacool: - Tentacool hits like a truck but is too slow, physically frail, and weak to paralysis to be usable.

:marowak: - Like Weezing, Marowak is outclassed by a Pokemon that isn't super great on its own, that being Sandslash. While Marowak does have unique options in Blizzard, Fire Blast, and Counter, the only thing that makes Sandslash usable is Swords Dance, which Marowak lacks.

:magneton: - When the best mon in the tier is a Ground-type. Besides OU this honestly might be Mag's worse tier.

:onix: - You counter Fearow, but you lose to everything else and hit like a wet paper towel. I still can't believe Onix has less Attack than fucking Oddish.

:hitmonlee: - Basically worse Primeape, High Jump Kick is cool but not at all saving this mon.

:lickitung: - Lickitung has an awesome movepool, but it's way, way too slow to do anything, and we have much better abusers of paralysis.

:farfetchd: :bat: :hitmonchan: :beedrill: :ditto: - I don't think I need to explain why these Pokemon suck. 7U time or I guess Ubers for Ditto and Golbat.

In conclusion, Porygon ruined the tier and I hate it. Otherwise, I'd like to see how this tier develops, and whether or not Porygon's presence is untenable. Thanks for reading and be great everyone.

The difference between D and Theory is that I can see D having minute breakthroughs in some games due to certain qualities. Theory is mostly wishful thinking.

:porygon: - Seems like a better Staryu in every way bar initial speed. Doesn't mean it's invincible, but it does knock a few mons down.

:pidgeot: - Second fearow?

:scyther: - Faster/potentially more threatening fearow?

:marowak: - blizz/counter/fire blast are interesting options that provide marowak niche scenarios where it doesnt need to predict to hit as hard as possible. Counter is also pretty cool in a tier with mons reliant on normal moves like pinsir, fearow, and the occasional hyper beam absorption.

Alright now that I won the tour I feel like I'm not talking out of my ass anymore, so here's my take. PU has a lot of room to develop after the Porygon drop, so I expect much of this won't hold true later; even mid-tour we saw Rocks make a comeback and more use of stuff like Dnair.

1684353491991.png

Fearow - Unwallable except by things Porygon eats alive, but I think this isn't a mandatory Pokemon on a team, just very tough to drop. I'd put it about equal with Queen. Rocks can still be used to stop it and double out or boom on Pory, and their attacks should force Pory to Recover anyway so you can switch out safely to your Pory check; Twaving is really risky. All of this to say, I think Fearow checks are being underutilized a bit, and a lot of frail stuff like Drowzee, Staryu, etc. are everywhere, so Fearow just always forces a super hard decision for the opponent. Oh, also Sandslash can't really switch into it but easily 1v1s it or sets up in its face, so that's worth noting.

Nidoqueen - Undroppable because of its sheer options. It can check almost anything in the tier, but both you and the opponent have to play a bit of a guessing game around it - Queen can't afford to predict in a lot of matchups, though, so it can be a little easy to pivot something into it.Good check to Fearow and all the stuff that walls Fearow, bad check to Fires unless they're paralyzed, IMO. Many teams are using this as basically their only Dnair check, so it's a little stretched thin in some matchups - it kind of reminds me of NU Blastoise in that it's essential and usually overextended trying to check stuff, but maybe Clefable is a better comparison, lol. Porygon "walls" it but honestly this seems way too risky to do especially before sleep has been used. The dynamics around Porygon clicking Twave vs Recover aren't fully developed yet so we'll have to see how it pans out. Substitute is underutilized, btw.

Rapidash - Outspeeding Fearow is more important than ever, and both its crit rate and Fire Spin give it the chance to bullshit Porygon. Only Arcanine and Omanyte really want to switch in, both of which can be checked by Pory (Arcanine is scarier to check but also easier to paralyze since it's so often a lead). Unfortunately, Fire Spin Gaming might make a comeback. I think Agility is underexplored.
Dragonair - I almost put this in A+. SurfBolt Staryu everywhere, lots of Fires, Drowzee and Porygon abundant, most teams only have Queen to check this... it's Dnair paradise. I might be high on it but this is one of the most reliable catch-all defensive pieces in the meta. You can see in my games that it put in work even when taking a first hit crit as a lead, paralyzing Arcanine and then setting up favorable situations for teammates. It's notably a really solid Porygon check if you can get it in safely, denying Porygon chances to heal and slowly wearing it down. It's super hard to switch into because everything faster is either weak to Blizzard (Fearow, Nidoqueen), hard walled (Staryu), or doesn't want to take para (Fires; also semi walled). Also, it can run Agiliwrap or a number of funny tech options like Fire Blast, so you never quite know what you're gonna get when facing one - Agiliwrap won me a few tour games when I was halfassing, so I can't help but think it's solid. Dragonair's a tad frail and loses hard to Nidoqueen, but overall I think it just offers so much.

Drowzee - GOAT utility mon. Hypnosis, Twave, STAB Psychic is a recipe for destruction. So many times I didn't even click Hypnosis, I just sent it in with the threat of sleep and started clicking Psychic and it traded super well. Also beats Pory super hard, which is always appreciated. It's still frail, but the meta seems really favorable to it, I think. Twaving anything that can't Twave back makes it Pory food, so even things like Arcanine can't do that much to stop it making progress; just Twave and go Pory to wall them and maybe catch a burn.

Porygon - First off, I'll say I'm not sure I like this being in PU. The whole dynamic of the tier has shifted and the new meta feels very haphazard, but I also don't want to ban it based on a single, very unoptimized tournament. I think it makes crits even more relevant than ever as well as other sources of luck (partial trap, full paralysis) that weren't as prevalent as before, but I think we also aren't exploiting its slowness enough yet.

It's very hard to drop, but it has a lot of flaws that keep it down here, to me. It's slow as fuck, and if it gets paralyzed it really can only fight, like, Staryu and itself. That said, obviously it has a lot of bullshit strong things to it, Twave, Recover, Paraslam immunity, better bulk than stuff like Staryu, etc. If you burn Porygon, good luck stopping it from walling you for eternity, and it can randomly pull out bullshit like Sharpen + Hyper Beam, which hits surprisingly hard, actually (Torchic got me good with that).

There are a lot of ways to beat Porygon and every team should have 2-3 at least. You can paralyze it and eventually it will fail to Recover, you can use a mon with a boosting move or some really strong move like STAB Submission or Explosion, you can use something with Psychic to force it to switch out chipped because of drops, you can partial trap it down (better if you can force it out at like 60-70% then trap it as it returns), or you can get really lucky with crits (this is a fake strat, desperation play). In most games, Porygon will eventually have to take paralysis, and then you can finally beat it, but things like Machamp and Sandslash can do a lot to stop it, as can Explosion users. I don't think people realize how safe booming on Pory is yet - it really can't afford to switch out at like 80%, because it's so slow it can't switch back into things to Recover except after a KO. It's a win-win.

Staryu - Still amazing, but I really think we need to start running Blizz sometimes. Getting walled by Dnair is just so bad. I'm not even sure Recover is worth anything at all, maybe Surf/Bolt/Blizz/Twave is the way. Anyway, great utility, great Nidoqueen revenge killer, yadda yadda, it's another good but frail NFE. Literally this whole tier is either "fully evolved bad mon with decent bulk" or "NFE with broken moves but crap stats." Outspeeding Dnair is big though, paralyzing it is essential for a lot of teams.

Machamp - Underutilized, Submission makes it a good Pory check even when paralyzed and its damage is generally amazing. I think Rock Slide is a real button for it too, idk; catching Fearow on entry is disgustingly good, and it can run Fire Blast to fuck over Pinsir too. Still a great Nidoqueen check, but Pory frees it up to be more than that, too.

Pinsir - Prevalence of Fires hurts but you can still so easily get value from Pinsir after paralyzing the Fires or with an Omanyte in back. I thinkin Pory meta we'll start seeing some Swords Dance Pinsir to break through it easier. Still pretty impossible to switch in\to, and less Rock-types (due to fear of Pory) helps it immensely.
Gastly - Fast sleep, great coverage, rolls SurfBolt Staryu, not horrid into fires, walls silly Sharpen Porygons, good versus Pinsir, and Explosion basically forces Pory out because any fast attacker can finish it afterward. All around solid mon, obviously held back by no STAB and incredible frailty and Sandslash rising is an issue for it, but I think it's still favorable for aggressive teams.

Arcanine - Never got how this dropped out of the tier, pre-Pory it was still a solid mon tbh. Post-Pory, it looks even better with a resurgence of Rapidash and an all-in-one check to its worst matchups in Porygon. Dash/Arc/Fearow can overwhelm checks like Nidoqueen/Staryu/Dnair/Seaking/Sandslash really fast, so a lot of teams are still bringing a Rock for extra support, but yeah, Arc good. Great lead against Staryu/Drowzee.

Seaking - Mixed bag and I think we may need to put Blizz back on it at least sometimes for Fearow/Dnair. Seaking's special attacks carried the day for me in a lot of these matches, turning around a late-game fight by revenging Nidoqueen with Agility-Surf-Surf then getting an extra hit into Fearow or such thanks to Agility is massive, letting you save Queen to take out Fearow and break open the endgame. I don't think Dedge-Beam is a thing it really does in this role but we'll see how it develops. Pory isn't great for it cause it's walled after Twave, but sometimes getting that Twave can be tough.

Sandslash - Biggest W of this meta goes to Sandslash, it does a ton of things that are valuable in this meta. Beats Fearow, beats Pory, beats Drowzee and Abra, beats Machamp, blocks Twaves without a Psychic weakness, does a ton of damage so even if things switch into it they're hurting, finishes paralyzed Fires from really high percentages... I'm really liking it. Very hard to play well, it really really does not want to switch into attacks but it's super hard to switch into in return.

Omanyte - Still has a place! Pory really cannot switch into Fires and Fearow, Omanyte can. It can't really be used early-game cause of sleep, but neither can Pory tbh. It forms a strong but slow defensive core with Pory and I like it alongside stuff like Pinsir. Even though it's walled by Pory, I think this "switch Pory in and Twave" line is way too exploitable. You Twave, they go Sandslash/Nidoqueen, you are now in trouble, they get to crit fish you a bunch of times and your Pory may die for nothing. I dunno, I think things will improve here.

Abra - Hard to justify, I almost used it multiple times in the tour but it basically requires a Rock and Abra + Rock + Pory doesn't leave much room for other stuff like a sleeper. Drowzee fits more at the cost of Speed, but Abra is still dangerous.

Graveler - Boom gives this a niche still. Booming Pory means it's done, booming on a damaged Pory means they either take it or switch out and have a hard time finding an in later. Also Counter is a funny revenge killing option I didn't get to use in tour but I brought it twice. One day. Shoutout to Gastlies for that one.

Magmar - Swagmar is honestly not bad at all. I like it a lot as a sleep antilead. Confuse Ray messes them up, it has Psychic to drop Pory which lets Fire Blast outdamage its healing (and Cray helps stop it healing too), and it's got options on options. Body Slam, Counter, Submission, it can cover anything. Firmly believe it belongs up here, I see it/Abra/Grav as kind of interchangeable in rankings with Abra having a slight lead perhaps.
Scyther - Honestly this might have merit as a Pinsir alternative, run it with Pory + Oma and hit-and-run with Slash till late then SD up. IDK, it might work in this meta now that there's a defensive backbone for it.

Poliwag - Inconsistent and weak, but fastest sleep is worth something.

Slowpoke - Inconsistent just because so many leads own it, but great anti-Fire lead.

Weepinbell - Might have merit just for Wrap and Sleep Powder, hard to be certain.

Marowak - BeatsBlack convinced me this has some merit. It's bad Sandslash, but it has one good thing - Blizzard eases prediction immensely. Sandslash might Rock Slide vs Fearow and end up hitting a Nidoqueen for nothing, but Wak just clicks Blizz and hits either of those. That said, its stats are ass.

Flareon - Bulky Fire with massive damage? Idk, I think it can have some merit here.

D-ranks - Stuff I think has a little merit but not too much going for it. Ape can beat Pory but it's shitty Machamp, Arbok is a relatively fast Wrap user and things faster than it don't want to risk para but it's pretty crappy otherwise, Plume gets sleep but nothing else, Butterfree can outspeed stuff like Machamp and Sandslash and hit sleep but is trash beyond that, the Poison boomers have a lot going for them with Rocks on the downslide but still kinda don't do more than go one-for-one, Magneton crushes NFEs and Porygon but gets owned by Queen.

Edit: Post #69, nice

My thoughts:
pu vr may 2023.PNG

S: If you don't bring Fearow/Nidoqueen, you're throwing. Easily the two best in the tier, slight edge to Fearow though because its crit rate just lols away its counters sometimes and Nidoqueen is stopped more easily by Porygon.

A+: Rapidash just goes crazy sometimes. 105 speed is so important. Porygon is the premiere wall, I unlike other people though like its inclusion in the tier though. It's neat.

A: I'm surprised at how good Drowzee and Dragonair are in this meta (and NFEs in general). Drowzee might be the most annoying 'mon to play against with Dragonair as a close second. Arcanine is a nice combination wall/offensive presence.

A-: Man I want Pinsir to be better than it is, but Rapidash and Arcanine say no. I kind of want SD to make a comeback. I like Staryu a lot but despite having Recover it's just a little too frail to be higher.

B+: Gastly stocks are super high, trust me. Diamond hands, to the moon, etc. Use this more often than you already do. Machamp is still good but I feel like people are playing around it better now.

B: Seaking kind of sucks tbh. I could see it falling lower. Sandslash is on the rise though for sure, I've seen the light recently haha. I'm also higher on Abra than most people because I think it fits great in hyper offense builds that drop Pory.

B-: These guys are good for Fearow and the Fires which you think would make them higher, but I find you can normally break through them with other stuff/use Pory on them without too much trouble, so... gg

C: Stuff with fringe viability IMO. I haven't seen any of these three be impressive at all, but you could probably cheese a victory in the right circumstances.

D: I wouldn't use these Pokemon.

So, I have many thoughts and observations from looking over these stats. I'll list a few of them below.

1. The steady rise of Porygon
Porygon is PU's newest resident, and this was the first tour with it legal. Something I noticed is that Porygon's usage steadily increased as the tour went on. Started at 53% usage in Round 1, by round 3 was at 77%, and at the finals it was used a whopping 83%. I think as the tour went on, players began to realize the immense value Porygon brings, and it's very hard to drop since it's a bulky recover user, allowing it to soft-check a good chunk of the tier.

2. Fearow's Grand Finale
Fearow remained at a steady usage for the majority of the tour, having a very respectable 60-ish percent usage. However this all changed in the finals, where it was used every single game. It was around this time too where people realized how amazing Fearow actually is, to the point where some players (me included) consider it the best mon in the tier, even ahead of Nidoqueen. Also, there's something related I noticed which also contributed to Fearow's success, which I'll add here as a 2.5:
2.5. What happened to Graveler?
Graveler was barely used this tour, it's usage resembled that of ZU mons such as Slowpoke, Sandslash, and Magmar. Porygon dropping was probably a big part in this, but I've come to realize that Graveler may just be flawed in PU. It only really checks Fearow, and most of the time, its low speed and special make it super exploitable. Omanyte doesn't have the issue of low special, and it trades a shakier matchup versus Fearow for a better matchup versus the Fire-Types. Speaking of Omanyte...

3. lol winrate
Okay I know winrate is a very controversial topic, but I do think it's important to mention Omanyte's TERRIBLE winrate this tour, at 35%. Omanyte is another mon I think is just flawed, similar to Graveler. Porygon exploits it, Gastly beats it, and Arcanine is in my opinion, a much better defensive check to Fire-types and Fearow. Omanyte being at 7th in usage over stuff like Dragonair is absolutely apalling in my opinion.

4. Fallen Warriors
Big Yellow is gonna hate this one, since Pinsir has fallen so hard. From #2 in the tier to now being out of the top ten entirely. It's pretty clear why Pinsir has fallen off so hard though. There's more Fearow and Arcanine, which Pinsir does not like at all. Seaking has also fallen pretty hard. It now has to deal with two recover users now that Porygon is here, not just one.

5. Leads
It looks like PU's lead metagame is a lot more concrete compared to Pioneer. The most common leads are Rapidash, Dragonair, Gastly, Arcanine, Staryu, and surprisingly Slowpoke. All of these leads have some way to status, either with Body Slam, Hypnosis, or Thunder Wave. Lead Fearow is completely dead now, which makes sense, since people are valuing Fearow so much more that they're not gonna waste it on being an attacking lead. Magmar was used 7 times in the tour, and all 7 times as a lead. Slowpoke was used as a lead 10 out of the 11 times it was used. Gastly and Dragonair saw some usage in the back, but over half of them were leads.

6. Cores
About half of all teams had Nidoqueen + Fearow + Porygon, and keep in mind these were only teams where all three were revealed, there could have been even more. The firespam core was also reflected in the data, with Arcanine having Porygon as a teammate 83% of the time, much higher than Porygon's overall 67% usage. It's pretty clear that some defined cores are starting to form in PU, which is exciting.

7. Vileplume
Why are people still using this. This sucks. Stop using it. Stop. Using. Vileplume.

Overall, those are the usage stats and my thoughts on the current metagame! I really like how this tour has developed the tier, and I'm excited to see how the Grand Slam will change the tier!

Just as a note, my missing mon in the finals was a Graveler :P also I wouldn't extrapolate too much on the Magmar thing, I was the majority of those uses and idt it really caught on. Cool insights though and timely with Slam starting!

my-image(99).png

I've been playing PU as much as I can since the Porygon drop though I'm not that good of a player. Nonetheless, I think the current resources are a tad outdated (Fires being extremely good, Rocks being unviable, people are still using Vileplume) so if my dogshit opinions generate discussion that would be good. It's hard to find games so if anyone wants to play PU please ping me on the RBYcord i would like to play more games. I don't have things written about some mons because I don't have anything interesting or new to say about them. Everything under A is unordered.

I feel that Drowzee is the clear #3. Porygon usage means that Drowzee has a consistent setup for Hypnosis, and even though Drowzee doesn't want to click Hypnosis in some games, its traits as a paralysis spreader are still great. It is more threatening than Staryu and Dragonair with Psychic STAB, and the threat of Hypnosis causes the opponent to switch around more than they should. In games with Drowzee on both sides, it really feels that the player who activates their Drowzee first wins, since nothing is comfortable switching into Drowzee. As a lead, I think that Drowzee is quite decent. Fire types are scared of paralysis while Dragonair and Staryu give opportunities to fish for sleep, but if that doesn't pan out, Drowzee can still opt for Twave.

I don't have much new to add about Staryu and Dragonair other than I feel that they are a bit underrated. STAB Surf is very difficult to switch into, and base 85 speed makes it rather easy to use despite its frailty. I appreciate Staryu's offensive presence much more than Porygon's. I'd say that its main strength is that it compresses a lot of roles, being a Seaking check, a decent revenge killer, a paralysis spreader, and a switch-in to more passive mons. Dragonair's typing is useful, as Surf/Thunderbolt Staryu gives Dragonair free entry, and Dragonair can switch into Fire Blasts and threaten paralysis. When I use Seaking, I sometimes run Blizzard specifically to hit Dragonair. Dragonair isn't a defensive liability and is immediately threatening to the opponent, as they have no way of knowing if you are using AgiliWrap. That in addition to Wrap utility makes Dragonair a useful mon. I feel that these traits allow Dragonair to enable some teams that would otherwise be defensively lacking.

Porygon is a mon that I am not that high on in comparison to others. Porygon is a very passive mon, as you are forced to Recover a lot, allowing the opponent to bring in threats. It also is deathly afraid of paralysis, so it has trouble finding entry since everyone is running paralysis spam now. Porygon has the capability to barely wall most of the tier, but the margins are so thin that anything bad happening to Porygon spells doom for it. Lastly, Porygon suffers from terrible 4MSS. I feel that Tbolt/IceBeam exists primarily to allow your Rapidash to progress, but allows the opponent to get a rather free Hypnosis. I like using Dedge/Blizz Porygon to spread paralysis but I feel that this set starts to compete more heavily with other paralysis users, since it is still more passive than other paralysis spreaders. It also gets walled by Omanyte. I also feel that Porygon is often just "tacked on" to some teams. Tbolt/Beam is honestly unnecessary on non-Fire teams. Psychic Porygon is not in a good spot in the meta currently. Machamp usage has dipped a bit and most Gastly users are content to blow up on Porygon. One annoying that I've noticed is that ever since Porygon dropped to the tier, mons like Omanyte no longer click Body Slam to catch a switch, they now click Blizzard to fish for freezes.

In a world where Fearow and Nidoqueen are on every team, and by extension, Fearow and Nidoqueen mirrors are common, one thing I like about Seaking is that the mon doesn't care whether you win the Fearow or Nidoqueen mirrors since those two are probably the best mons for Seaking to set up on. Fearow has around an 18% chance of OHKOing with a crit Hyper Beam, and Nidoqueen has a 10% chance to fish for paralysis. The rise in usage of Fire types also makes Seaking a lot more threatening, since many teams are filled with Seaking-weak mons and rely on one or two mons to not get swept by Seaking. If anything happens to them Seaking just sweeps.

I don't like FBlast/BSlam/HBeam/Agility Arcanine. Instead, I think the Reflect/Rest has more potential. If Nidoqueen is forced to trade early and the opponent isn't running Staryu or Omanyte, Arcanine is extremely hard to dislodge, and the best answer most teams have against Arcanine late-game is to simply fish for crits. Arcanine also has uses outside of a late-game win condition, since its exceptional bulk allows it to switch into other fires and wall them in the mid-game. Its bulk also means it's one of the better switch-ins to Drowzee, Gastly, Pinsir, and in desperate situations, Fearow. Mid-game Arcanine also walls Porygon (unless you get frozen). I'd say that the biggest drawback is that Arcanine has a tendency to be haxed. As a lead, I think Arcanine is okay since although it doesn't really have many "winning" matchups, Arcanine is rather consistent due to its high speed.

I'm not that much of a fan of Rapidash. I still think it's a decent choice but the fact that it is reliant on an 85% accurate move makes it frustrating to use. Non-STAB Body Slam misses out on many kill percentages that it really wants to hit, so I find myself sending out Fearow to revenge kill more often. Dash can revenge kill but is walled Omanyte and the SSJ Arcanine, and on an obvious Fire Blast, the opponent can switch into their own Rapidash or Dragonair to preserve a weakened mon. Rapidash also can't afford to stay in against much, since paralysis might as well KO dash and paralysis spreaders are more common than ever. I feel that Dash also doesn't really add much defensively to a team in comparison to other choices. When building with Rapidash I find myself ending up with a back Staryu very often, as it covers Dash roadblocks (Arcanine and Omanyte) well enough. One thing I do appreciate about Dash is that Rapidash teams are not as worried about winning Fearow and Nidoqueen mirrors, making those mirrors much more favorable. And unlike Seaking, Rapidash is a lot more noncommittal. As a lead, I think Rapidash is just straight-up bad. It's slightly worse than Arcanine in nearly every way, and it also tells the opponent that you will not be using Rapidash late game (it will get paralyzed turn 1). If you click Fire Spin turn one you deserve to be paralyzed.

As a lead, Gastly is inconsistent but decent, but I think that phoopes-style back Gastly has genuine merit. Porygon has to choose between three coverage moves, and Psychic is the least popular of them. When building teams, I like pairing back Gastly with Drowzee to get a very consistent sleep (Dedge is walled by Gastly, Psychic is walled by Drowzee) or with Omanyte (Gastly takes Tbolt well and Omanyte takes Psychic okay). As a lead, I think that Explosion is somewhat underutilized. Even though it doesn't KO Drowzee or Porygon it allows you to bring Nidoqueen for free, and they are forced to sack and probably trade Queens. Personally, I like using lead Gastly with Reflect/Rest Arcanine teams because of this.

I'm very high on Magmar. Back Magmar on double fire compressing Porygon's role as an Omanyte answer while still being a Fire-type probably gives it a niche though I don't think anyone's been trying to build a back Magmar team since Porygon dropped. Lead Magmar is very cool though. Lead Gastly and Drowzee getting more use means that Magmar is more useful than ever in stopping sleep. I like using lead Magmar on offensive teams with a weak defensive backbone that can't really afford to switch around Gastly or Drowzee.

I feel that Omanyte is much better in the meta than I originally thought. Porygon being forced into one coverage move means that Omanyte's crippling flaw of being a Porygon doormat isn't too big of an issue, since pairing it with Gastly or Drowzee means that you can at least get a sleep + Twave/Boom on something, which usually puts you far enough ahead that using Omanyte teams are worth it. I like using Hydro Pump to catch greedier Porygon players but I think Rest has merit, at least for now. Porygon users like saving their mon until Omanyte is KO'd, and in a late game Tbolt-less Porygon beats Omanyte in a 1v1 since they have more chances to fish for freeze. Rest allows Omanyte to have a rather good shot at winning a Porygon late-game. I don't think that Omanyte is as passive as it used to be, since mons like Pinsir have seen a bit of a usage dip, while mons that are more threatened by Omanyte, like Rapidash and Fearow, are more common.

I am also not that much of a fan of Pinsir. Fires/Fearow being everywhere doesn't help, but the rise of paralysis users like Dragonair and Porygon makes life a lot harder for Pinsir since Pinsir likes having a good speed tier. Pinsir doing rather set damage also is a liability, as really silly stuff like a Rapidash or Fearow hard switch become possible. Nidoqueen also no longer being the undisputed number one mon also harms Pinsir a bit, since the ability to switch in is not as important (Queen is still on every team but in some games, Nidoqueen isn't revealed until very late). Pinsir being unable to spread paralysis, its fear of paralysis, and difficulties dealing with Porygon for non-SD sets make it hard to justify over other mons. It still hits like a truck and is one of the better paralysis abusers, and Swords Dance sets are unexplored at the current moment.

I think Machamp suffers from many of the same issues as Pinsir (not a great paralysis spreader and Fire/Fearow). One thing that Machamp has above Pinsir though is that it works rather well on Omanyte teams. Being a good Nidoqueen switch-in and taking rather little from Staryu's and Porygon's Tbolt lends it well for those teams. I feel that Machamp fears Fearow even more than Pinsir though. After switching in on a Nidoqueen, Machamp has to play a guessing game of whether the opponent will switch into Fearow or stay in with Nidoqueen. Pinsir's Slash is more consistent overall.

I am not qualified to talk about Sandslash.

Abra is probably an entire sub-tier below Machamp/Pinsir but it still feels very PU to me. Fearow being on every team is bad news so a late-game Abra cleanup is harder than ever. Rises of fires and paralysis users are also very bad. I still think it has a large amount of good traits but it's constricting to build around Abra. You need a rock so the opponent will not just click Hyper Beam at every Abra impasse and since you are probably using Omanyte, you also need Drowzee/Gastly on the team so Tbolt Porygon doesn't just auto-win against you. I feel that the meta has changed unfavorably to Abra so much that I think its best use nowadays is to use it as a backup Drowzee. (It can revenge something, spread a fast paralysis, and switch into NFEs not clicking Twave).

Graveler very much has suffered from the Porygon drop. I find difficulty in building Graveler teams of old but I think Graveler has some good traits. Nearly every mon has trouble switching into Graveler, barring Porygon, which means that it is a very good Porygon lure. Blowing up on it immediately and then having a bunch of Porygon-weak mons like Seaking is a team structure that I am quite fond of, though it is quite inflexible (Porygon critting or freezing is game-ending). I think that Poliwag stocks will rise soon, since if people stop using Rapidash/Arcanine leads suddenly Poliwag is uncontested with its 60% sleep and can actually do things. On the other hand, I think that Slowpoke will decline since the increased prevalence of lead sleepers and paralysis users will harm its effectiveness. Slowpoke is bulky, but it isn't THAT bulky that it can afford to lose turns to paralysis. Scyther is another mon that I think shows potential but I haven't seen anyone get it to work. It probably has some niche on Omanyte teams.

Weepinbell and Vileplume are probably at the peak of their usefulness in this meta. Staryu is running Surf/Tbolt to catch fire types, which gets walled by Dragonair and the grasses. However, if my opinion that Fire types are not that great catches on, Staryu may sometimes opt for Blizzard over Surf to hit Dragonair, which would cause the grass's niche to evaporate. I think Weepinbell is much easier to build with though, since it is somewhat similar to Twave Dragonair except that it has sleep.

Here are some other mons that may have potential, starting from most likely to least likely.
I find that it is rather easy to force an early Queen trade while using lead Gastly, so perhaps Magneton has a niche somewhere.
Primeape functions very similar to fire leads, except that it does better versus Staryu.
I saw someone using a lead Pikachu and I thought it was pretty cool. It's like a marginally faster Staryu without Recover. 90 base speed paralysis gets the jump on every other sleeper and also speed ties Poliwag, but maybe Abra would be more suited for this.
Pidgeot is the only one of these that I've seriously tried building with, and I can tell you that it's awful. Not learning drill peck means silly stuff like Gastly, Pinsir, and Machamp are suddenly good switch-ins to your Fearow-lite. Being slower also stings and having worse rolls on Porygon makes it not worth using. It's like all the good things of Fearow were stripped away. It could be useful as a lead, though.

Lead Metagame:
Currently, it feels that paralysis spreaders like Dragonair and Staryu are the most common and effective. Fire types generally feel bad to use a lead since they can't guarantee paralysis with Body Slam and their STABs are resisted by these two. Gastly and Drowzee will probably rise in usage since they can get sleep off against NFEs much more consistently than against the Fire leads, though if Magmar were to also rise in usage Drowzee and Gastly would be worse off.

Porygon Versus Nidoqueen -- Who Wins?

Porygon is kind of a Nidoqueen switchin in that it actually has a shot of winning against the queen. However, there are two competing strategies that Porygon players must choose from -- click an attacking move once they can't be 2HKO from Nidoqueen's EQ, or click Recover forever and PP stall EQ (this obviously depends on game state I'll get to that later). Clicking an attacking move gets guaranteed damage, but opens Porygon to being crit. Clicking Recover avoids this, but you are still capable of being KO'd if the Nidoqueen player has enough luck.

So what are the chances? I decided to build a Python program to simulate a Porygon versus Nidoqueen matchup with the most common situation, Porygon switching into an EQ. After running through it a million times, here are the results:
If a Porygon switches in and attacks with Ice Beam once it is above 274 HP, Nidoqueen has a 76.1330% chance to win.
If a Porygon switches in and attacks with Blizzard once it is above 274 HP, Nidoqueen has a 74.5245% chance to win.
If a Porygon switches in and Recovers every time, Nidoqueen has a 50.7673% chance to win.

The marginal difference between Blizzard and Ice Beam doesn't capture the full picture, though. One of the best things about Blizzard is that you are able to put Nidoqueen into EQ range from opposing Nidoqueens with only one attack. I also calculated how often Nidoqueen was in danger of being OHKO'd by an opposing Nidoqueen EQ. Ice Beam allowed Nidoqueen to escape KO range 69.5714% of the time while Blizzard had a 41.8630% chance.

What if Porygon gets free entry?
If Porygon attacks with Ice Beam once it is above 274 HP, Nidoqueen has a 55.4360% chance to win, and a 41.3256% to escape the EQ KO range.
If Porygon attacks with Blizzard once it is above 274 HP, Nidoqueen has a 53.1565% chance to win, and a 4.4425% to escape the EQ KO range.
If Porygon clicks Recover forever, Nidoqueen has a 23.3867% chance to win.

What if Porygon is paralyzed?
I'm not going to even put the exact percentages here because the numbers are dreadful. On the switchin, Porygon has a 0.2% chance of winning, mostly coming from freezes. The % to be put in KO Range is also in the same ballpark. Always clicking recover has a 0.001% chance of winning, and I'm pretty sure that that number comes from floating point rounding. In an honest 1v1, the number expands to roughly a 4% chance of winning if you attack (though Blizzard puts Queen in KO range significantly more often, like 30% more often). Spamming Recover has a 0.003% of successfully draining every EQ PP.

What can we learn from this?
If your Porygon is unparalyzed, clicking Recover every time maximizes your odds of winning. However, this situation is more of an endgame kind of deal since if the opponent catches on to the fact that you're spamming Recover they're going to switch something in and suddenly you'll be in a world of hurt. Blizzard and Ice Beam have very similar winrates but Blizzard puts Nidoqueen into EQ range significantly more often. Clicking Recover once your Porygon has been paralyzed is not worth it, you're best bet is to attack and hope you freeze. Nidoqueen is favored against Porygon in every situation barring an honest 1v1 where Porygon only clicks Recover. Recover also fails at 78 HP.

How can I obtain this Python Program?
If you ping me on the RBYcord I will give you the code I was working with, so please check to make sure I didn't make any mistakes. However, I will not be posting a link to the code on this post. The reason is because I have never learned how to write proper code so if you are a genuine programmer and you look at my code, you will immediately die. I will update this post if there are any mistakes (or I might delete it if like everything's wrong). One rather funny bug that I encountered was the Porygon player being allowed to choose an action at the start of their "turn", which essentially translated into the Porygon player moving first. This led to bonkers winrates that did not match my experience, so if you ever find yourself in a situation where the opponent sends out Nidoqueen in response to your Agility Porygon, know that you are favored to win even if you click attacking moves.

10 minutes after posting this I just realized that since Porygon's future actions are decided at the start of the turn, Porygon will not be able to recover if it is at 76 HP at the start of the turn, but will not be prevented from recovering if Queen's EQ knocks it to 76 HP during the turn. This means that the recovery fail glitch was not implemented correctly, so Nidoqueen has a slightly higher winrate.
