RBY Grand Slam I Playoffs

:y/mewtwo: :y/tentacruel: :y/mr. mime: :y/snorlax: :y/persian:

Welcome one, welcome all, to the first edition of RBY Grand Slam playoffs! After a few months of heated battles across five different RBY metagames, we have finally emerged with eight top competitors all vying for the crown. Before we introduce the remaining players, however, I'd like to thank everyone who helped make this event a success! First, shoutout to Amaranth and emma for being very helpful in helping organize this event, especially in the early stages. Couldn't have done it without them. Next, I want to thank my fellow hosts for all the events, those being Ctown6, ForgottenOnes, Torchic, and Heika! I very much appreciate the work that y'all put in as hosts. Then of course there's May who provided the lovely banner artwork for all of the Opens: thank you so much! And finally, I want to thank all the players for making this such a great event: we had 123 participating players between the five Opens which is just awesome to see that so many people are taking an interest in RBY! Thank you all so much! (and if you did something and I forgot to shout you out by name, I am so sorry).

Now let's meet the players!

1. Ctown6 (27 points)

The only word you can really use to describe Ctown this tournament has been "dominant." He's only one of two players to earn points in every single Open, and ended up winning the whole thing in both Ubers and Stadium. As the clear favorite, there's pressure on him to deliver. Only time will tell if someone can stop this incredible run.

2. SaDiSTiCNarwhal (16 points)

Narwhal is our second seed for playoffs, having earned multiple points in every Open with the exception of UU, with highlights including runner-up finishes in Ubers and Tradebacks. While known for OU prowess, it'll be exciting to see whether Narwhal can extend his dominance to other RBY tiers as well.

3. ClairDeLuna (13 points)

Clair is a relatively fresh face in the RBY scene, getting on the map in 7U but proving that she can hold her own in Slam tiers as well. Highlight finish for her so far was a runner-up in Stadium, though she's shown that NU is a strong suit of hers too. Getting double digit points was no easy feat, so let's see whether she can continue this solid run.

4. iKiQ (10 points)

Our final qualifier with double digit points, iKiQ had a strong performance in Tradebacks, winning the tournament, while also picking up a few points in Stadium and NU. iKiQ also has history as a UUer though, showing that he has strengths in multiple tiers and that he'll be a tough out for anyone in playoffs.

5. Ice Yazu (9 points)

Now it's time for our UU specialist: Ice Yazu. Yazu has shown exceptional ability in the tier, coming in as a runner-up in the UU Invitational earlier this year and of course winning the UU Open in Slam. Prowess in just one tier out of five is likely not enough to come out on top in playoffs, so it's time for Yazu to prove he's not just a one-tier wonder.

6. Serpi (9 points)

"Somebody stop this man." The NU GOAT proved once again why he deserves that title, taking the NU Open in a clean sweep, not even dropping a game. However, inexperience in the other four tiers may lead to his downfall. Will the OU and NU skills that Serpi is so well-known for translate to other tiers? Stay tuned.

7. Blue Cloyster (9 points)

Blue Cloyster is also a new face in the RBY community, and is seemingly pretty mysterious. Where did they come from? How did they build their skills so quickly? While their best finish was a loss in Stadium semifinals, everyone that's played Blue Cloyster seems to have high praise for them. Are they the tournament's dark horse?

8. kjdaas (8 points)

Rounding out the top eight, we have kjdaas. Known for her Ubers and UU skills, her performances in those two Opens were just enough to squeak into playoffs ahead of a four-way tie for ninth place. Don't let the seeding fool you, kjdaas is a big name and is a scary 8th seed. It'll be a tough road, but she could make some noise in these playoffs.

Ice Yazu and Serpi beat out Blue Cloyster by virtue of having a higher win rate across Slam (with both being undefeated in one tournament whereas Blue Cloyster has a few losses). Thus, Blue Cloyster gets the 7 seed. Since Ice Yazu and Serpi are tied in win rate, and tied again after looking at deepest run (since both won the only tournament they entered), we go to a coin flip for who gets 5th/6th. And the result is...

With introductions out of the way, here are the pairings for the first round of playoffs!

Ctown6 vs. kjdaas
SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Blue Cloyster
ClairDeLuna vs. Serpi
iKiQ vs. Ice Yazu

All sets are best of five, defined as first to three wins. The higher seed will pick the first tier to be played (out of Ubers, UU, NU, Stadium, Tradebacks) and the loser of each match will then pick which tier the next match will be played in. In the event of a tie, the match will be replayed in the same tier.

This week's deadline is Sunday, August 28th at 11:59 PM GMT-4

As always, good luck and have fun! And thanks again to everyone who participated/made this happen!

Predictions:

Ctown6 vs. kjdaas - Ctown's been way too dominant for me to not pick him round 1
SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Blue Cloyster - I called Blue Cloyster the dark horse but Narwhal too good
ClairDeLuna vs. Serpi - I think this is the only one that goes to five games, with Serpi taking Ubers, NU, and Tradebacks while Clair takes UU and Stadium. Should be close.
iKiQ vs. Ice Yazu - I think iKiQ's experience in multiple tiers trumps Yazu's prowess in UU alone

Official Cl0wn Fanclub, go Clair and Ct0wn!!

Ctown6 vs. kjdaas - Ctown beat me in 2 cups back to back, some of the games were close, but his dominance was just shown. I also just want him to win.
SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Blue Cloyster - I think I’m less high on Blue Cloyster than other people, when I faced them it was a good game, but the gap with narwhal is definitely large.
ClairDeLuna vs. Serpi - Im rooting for Clair but, Serpi is incredibly good, well proven. And most of all, consistent. I want Clair to pull this out
iKiQ vs. Ice Yazu - Echoing phoopes here, iKiQ is more well-rounded than Ice Yazu, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this is close.

I felt like doing predicts cuz I think this tour is rlly cool

Ctown6 vs. Kjdaas kek
SaDiSTiCNarwhal
vs. Blue Cloyster this set should actually be really good, as narwhal is known goat and Blue Cloyster seemingly came out of nowhere to take many impressive wins throughout slam. They had a great ubers run that involved a win over Torchic and a great stadium run as well. there isn’t much to say about narwhal that hasn’t already been said, he’s extremely talented at rby and even if (to my knowledge) he picked up these tiers relatively recently, he’s still a big ass threat.Narwhal wins, 3-1
ClairDeLuna vs. Serpi alright let me preface this by saying I love both these players. Serpi is just incredibly good at rby and I’ve always loved his approach and mindset towards the game, even modeling a lot about how I approach the game from him. Clair is also my friend, and I’ve reallly enjoyed watching her come up and I think she’ll only continue to rise. I think the trouble here for me is that Serpi is relatively inexperienced, of course extremely dominant and consistent in OU, but only entering NU among the slams, and will have to pick up stuff like ubers and stadium as he goes. This isn’t to say he can’t do that; he absolutely can. However, I really like clairs drive and excitement/ motivation towards the game rn. That paired with the stadium ou experience and some ubers and uu experience, I think this is the perfect storm for an upset. Clair, 3-2
iKiQ vs. Ice Yazu this is the hardest matchup to call out of the whole thing forsure. iKiQ had a great run winning Tradebacks, while Yazu had a great run winning UU. On paper; iKiQ has more experience throughout the different tiers; whereas many people see Yazu as simply a UU main. However, Yazu is quite good at rby in general and I think many people don’t realize that. Honestly this set could go either way, and I’m not certain at all as how this will play out. But I’m picking yazu, 3-2

Doing predicts with bad english :

Ctown6 vs. Kjdaaas : Ctown was way too dominant during the whole tournament but i think it will be close and kjdaas can take this bo3 aswell
SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Blue Cloyster : Blue Cloyster is being impressive during this slam but his opponent is Narwhal, he's so talented,
ClairDeLuna vs. Serpi : Nobody can stop Serpi now, very strong in RBY OU and won the RBY NU Open, i expect it to be a very close 3-2
iKiQ vs Ice Yazu : Gl

Banned deucer.
Ctown6 vs kjdaas - Ctown has been on an absolute tear, it's truly his year. I've watched this actual gigachad grow from an up-and-comer to arguably dethroning Oiseau Bleu as the reigning King of Ubers in my eyes. He's gonna be bringing the heat as usual, and all I can do is sit down, watch, and wonder what's in his demented mind this time.

SadisticNarwhal vs Blue Cloyster - I want to root for Blue Cloyster, but it's hard to go against Narwhal given their long-time presence in the community. I'm interested, though, this player has a lot of potential...will they join the RBY Discord and share their life story? The people must know!

ClairDeLuna vs Serpi - If it isn't the year of Ctown, it's the year of Serpi. The King of NU has shown no signs of stopping his reign of terror and people often forget he's no slouch in other tiers too! Clair has been on the come-up lately and had some really impressive runs, but she will have to do some incredible prepwork to stop that train!

iKiQ vs Ice Yazu - I think people have been underrating Yazu, they've done some pretty impressive stuff in tiers other than UU! I believe they came into the community from a certain Random Battles clique. While iKiQ is well-rounded, I have a strong feeling that Yazu will trump a lot of people's expectations here.

Requesting extension vs kjdaas. We’ve been in much contact but unfortunately we are both slammed this weekend. I f possible extending the dealline of r1 a whole week so we could play next weekend would be ideal. I know this is quite a bit to ask, and understand fully if it’s not accepted. We should manage to get a game done regardless early next week.

I meant to get these out a while ago. Just pretend I posted this is a timely manner.

SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Blue Cloyster -> 3-1
ClairDeLuna vs. Serpi -> 3-0 (sorry Clair)
iKiQ vs. Ice Yazu ->3-1

Cheers!

It’s playoffs and I’d really rather see the games get done so yes, extension granted.

this is going to back up the start of the next round but I think that’ll be okay

Was given the win by kjdaas, phoopes has the proof.

honestly really unfortunate, we both had extremely busy weeks, and our best time to play would have been on the weekend. Howeverafter getting our week extension approved we didn’t even try and schedule last weekend since it would be so difficult. After being told on Monday that in fact we would not be granted a week extension, we had no time to play despite lots of trying.

I have some more late predictions.

Ctown6 vs. Ice Yazu -> 3-2
SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Serpi -> 3-2

I know choosing two 3-2 finishes is kind of lame, but I think both matchups are relatively even. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if either one goes against my prediction, but I do believe the sets will be 3-2 regardless of who wins. My bonus prediction is that player who wins the Stadium OU match will win the set in both cases.

Extension granted to Ctown and Yazu, they should be playing today.

Finals will go up following results of that match

Going for the shake-up with an early prediction. Fun fact: this series may contain the final tournament match of RBY UU in which Sleep is legal.

SaDiSTiCNarwhal vs. Ice Yazu -> 3-1

Please someone else make a prediction I feel so lonely.
