Project PU Matchmaking! Season 3, Week 5: Rotom-Frost! (Submission phase)

All the nominated pokémon look good on paper, but I'm more inclined for Silvally here. Being used as a phaser allows for some bulk on the EVs (No need for 252+ speed if you are going to use roar, right?) and it solves the main issue of the discount Arceus; the overload it commonly faces when it tries to be both a defogger and a check to current threats.

(He looks so happy lol)
Congratulations to Oathkeepre for being voted this week's cupid and matching Jellicent with Ferroseed. Try it out the next time you need a balanced core and read here for more details --> Jelliseed.

Week 2 - Victreebel

Victreebel presents itself as an excellent wallbreaker with almost unresisted coverage. It does well against common mons like Mudsdale, Regirock, Quagsire and also serves as a decent fighting check against mons like Gurdurr and Chan. Unfortunately, Victreebel hasn't been matched before but now it is time to find a worthy bachelor. Pro tip: Check out Vic's checks and counters on Oathkeepre's exceptional Victim of the Week here to inform your matches.

Good luck.

Victreebel @ Grassium Z
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Strength Sap
- Leaf Storm
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power Fire

Stoutland @ Choice Band
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Return
- Superpower
- Pursuit
- Facade
Stoutland takes advantage of the SpDef mons like Audino and Cryogonal that switch in to try and wall Victreebel, threatening them out with a powerful Choice Band Return. Thanks to the use of Choice Band, Victreebel is free to use its best set, Grassium Z, while still being part of a very threatening core.
In return (heehee) Victreebel acts as a soft check to various offensive Pokémon like Primeape and Kabutops that might try to revenge kill Stoutland, as well as Mudsdale. It can also outright wall many more counters including but not limited to Regirock, Carbink, Qwilfish and Gurdurr.
Victreebel also puts a lot of pressure on shared softchecks like Skuntank, Ferroseed and Sandslash-Alola, thanks to Strength Sap in the matchup with the former and Hidden Power Fire for the latter two.

Lycanroc @ Lycanium Z
Ability: Steadfast
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Brick Break
- Accelerock
- Swords Dance

Nice little breaker-breaker combo here. Victreebel may be a nice special wallbreaker but it still has its fair share of problems. Those problems being the Oricorios (Sensu and Pom Pom), Simisear, Scyther, Froslass, Dodrio, Eelektross, Articuno, Cryogonal, etc. Lycanroc outspeeds and beats all of these either with 1 Stone Edge or its Z-move, assuming Victreebel on your team isn't your Z-move user. I chose to go with the unconventional Brick Break > Drill Run. It still hits the same stuff like Aggron, Duggy-A, opposing Lycanroc, Regirock, Sandslash-A (OHKO after SD btw), etc; not to mention that it always hits barring any evasion boosts unlike Drill Run which is 95% accurate.

Victreebel @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Leaf Storm / Energy Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Hidden Power Fire
- Strength Sap

Victreebel, on the other hand, deals with the threats that give Lycanroc a hard time. Those being Gurdurr, Hitmonchan, Primeape, Quagsire, Tangela, Gastrodon, Ferroseed, Regirock, Jellicent, Mawile, among others. I tend to use Rocky Helmet more as it punishes U-turn users Sucker Punch users and Victreebel can just easily recover that HP right back anyway with Strength Sap. Energy Ball is a nice alternative to Leaf Storm. Sure, it lacks in some power that Leaf Storm provides but the upside is no SpAtk drop afterwards!

Persian-Alola @ Leftovers
Ability: Fur Coat
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Parting Shot
- Taunt
- Foul Play
- Toxic

Alola-Persian is a nice partner for Victreebel as it can bring Victreebel in safely with its Parting Shot support and help Victreebel to weaken the foes Special Attack and Attack stat, so Victreebel has
it easier to setup on this foe or outright Attack the opposing pkmn. Victreebel also appreciates Alola-Persians ability to check psychic types like Claydol and furthermore
it can help Victreebel with its Taunt to prevent hazards from pkmn like Ferroseed and Froslass as Alolan-Persian is pretty fast and can naturally bypass with its speed tier most of the PU pkmn.
It can also help to wear down fatter pkmn with Toxic for Victreebel and whittle them down the more turns pass by.
Victreebel also likes Alola-Persian for its ability to deal damage to the most troublesome foes such as Oricorio-Sensu, Oricorio-Pom Pom and Dodrio, furthermore these 2 pkmn are amazing partners as
Victreebel checks the fighting tzypes such as Gurdurr, Hitmonchan and Primeape for Alola-Persian, Victreebel can also deal with fairy types like Clefairy as Clefairy does not like to get STAB Sludge Bombed by Victreebel.
Victreebel can also help against pkmn such as Quagsire and can OHKO it with its STAB grass type Attacks such as Leaf Storm and Victreebel can come in on Tangela as it has a multitude of ways of threatening Tangela.
In overall they are a nice couple as they cancel out each others weaknesses pretty well and can deal damage or support each other pretty well as they appreciate each others help during the battle.

This core is really strong cause, Vic can on fight, elec and grass type. Carra can switch on fire and fly type. Vic can also switch on ground type like gastro/quag who wall carra, and he can kill them, it help very much carra to sweep

Kabutops @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Stone Edge
- Knock Off
- Rapid Spin

Stone Edge to deal with Ice Pokemon such as Frostlass and Jynx. Knock Off helps to chip away at pokemon who use items such as leftovers and choice scarf. Rapid Spin ensures that Victreebel doesn't have to switch in on SR or layers of spikes.

With this submission, I Iook at my most recent build which features the core consisting of Grassium-Z Victreebel and Choice Scarf Aurorus. They work so well together because not only do they chip away at each others checks very consistently, they also pivot into them because of their defensive utility! But let's go in detail.

Sarzenia (Victreebel) @ Grassium Z
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Strength Sap
- Leaf Storm
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Sludge Bomb

So the standard Victreebel helps Aurorus in a way that's simple to play out in practise but still is genius. With Guzzlord most recently leaving the tier, one of Victreebel's best defensive counterplay is gone and so you'll often find yourself in matchups where you can lead with Victreebel to chip away at the special sponges that are left. Opponents will often begin their earlygame with something that can take one of Victreebel's hits. Eelektross for example often dies in the first few turns because Victreebel actually lives a Flamethrower and retaliates with Z-Leaf Storm into raw Leaf Storm.
Defensively, Victreebel pivots into Fighting and weak Water type attacks that Aurorus doesn't like - from the likes of Hitmonchan, Gurdurr, Primeape, Jellicent or Lanturn. Other Pokemon that wall Aurorus are also pressured out by Victreebel. Clefairy, Regirock or Ferroseed are represantive for that.

187394

Amargarga (Aurorus) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Snow Warning
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Blizzard
- Freeze-Dry
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Rock]

Aurorus is there to pick up the weakened bits of the opposing team. Blizzarding or Freeze Drying through everything that was worked by Victreebel before.
My main idea when partnering Victreebel to Scarf Aurorus, was Aurorus' ability to be a potent threat to offensive builds. Breakers often struggle with those playstyles, so I thought it would make sense.
Turns out that Aurorus not only helps in that regard, it even ensures that Victreebel doesn't have to struggle against the feared Flying types! Articuno, Oricorio and Dodrio to some degree are checked and defeated by Scarf Aurorus. You can even pivot into some Ice Types like Froslass or Rotom-Frost that can be chipped by HP Rock!

187398
187399

So that sounds nice on paper to have a decent offensive core to build a bulky offensive team around. But as every core it has flaws. These two have very obvious ones in Steel Types and sturdy specially defensive walls. Metang and Alolaslash as well as Audino and Cryogonal are impossible for these two to beat. So, it's important to pair these two with a third offensive Pokemon, that can get rid of them.
187395
Gurdurr
seems like a perfect fit since Metang usually doesn't carry a Psychic STAB which lets you pivot into every called threat. You could even think about running Toxic to punish flying types for Victreebel!
The only thing missing would be a Hazard Removal.
187396
Skuntank could fulfill this role, as well as trapping the likes of Metang or Cryogonal for the main core. It even compliments Gurdurr by dealing super effective damage against Psychic, Ghost and Fairy types!

Sunny Day Liepard is a nice partner for victreebel, setting up sunshine for it, while being able to potentially lock pokemon into moves to allow for a swap in opportunity with encore, and using u-turn to potentially bring victreebel in. Under sunshine, victreebel is capable of using an upgraded form of growth to hit +2 Special attack, allowing it to become an incredibly dangerous special sweeper, with dangerous grass poison fire coverage, while activating chlorophyll to hit a blistering 478 speed.
