PU Matchmaking Thread!

Art drawn by the talented Modeling Clay and coloured by his talented partner.

Co-hosted by PTF

Welcome to PU Matchmaking! This thread has been revamped for you guys to have not only a resource to come to when needed but to also participate! Thank you in advance to everyone who tags along and becomes involved.

What is matchmaking?

All Pokemon are unable to function effectively without their checks and counters gone, which is where their teammates come in. These partners are capable of dismantling multiple Pokemon proving a threat to their teammates, providing invaluable support and thus are often seen as the heart of the team. This project aims to brainstorm various ideal and effective partners to various Pokemon that may range from metagame defining Pokemon to more underrated threats.

Every week, I will nominate a Pokemon for discussion of potential partners and submissions. There will be five days from the day I nominate a Pokemon for you to submit a partner for that Pokemon! During the next two days, you and the PU community will vote on your favourite partner for said Pokemon. There will be a leaderboard! The winner for the week will receive 2 points and the runner up will receive 1 point and both users' submissions will be archived.

Whoever tops the leaderboard would be declared PU's next Top Cupid!!

How to matchmake?

You will nominate one Pokemon that would match well with the weeks featured Pokemon. You will explain how and why the Pokemon that you chose is a good partner and what the synergy of the core is.

Please nominate Pokemon that are viable and have used or have knowledge of using. Reservations are allowed as long as they users update the post 24 hours after the reservation has been made. This rule will change if it's not followed.

This weeks single mon wants a mate:

Good luck!

So start off this thread I decided to choose one of the drops in Scyther :

Scyther @ Eviolite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Roost
- Swords Dance
- U-turn
- Aerial Ace

Scyther has already proven to be a scary threat in the metagame with the possibility of using 3 sets, however on this week we will focus on the Bulky SD set. Have fun posting!

Darkinium

the mighty nuaguunibi

Hitmonchan @ Assault Vest
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 244 HP / 152 Atk / 112 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Stone Edge / Thunder Punch
- Rapid Spin

First and foremost, Hitmonchan offers Rapid Spin support for the Pesky Pebbles that slice off Scyther's health in half. It also forms a good check to Pyroar and Aurorus, who both check Scyther. Hitmonchan also breaks down Rock- and Steel-types that wall Scyther, such as Aggron, Regirock, and Togedemaru. Scyther supports this by baiting said Pokemon in and U-turning into Hitmonchan, keeping up the momentum. Scyther can also beat Mesprit, Gurdurr, and the like.

Lanturn @ Assault Vest
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 72 SpD / 184 Spe
Modest Nature
- Scald
- Volt Switch
- Ice Beam
- Dazzling Gleam

Not only are Lanturn and Scyther able create a strong VoltTurn core, but they also synergize well together. Scyther resists Grass and is immune to Ground for Lanturn, while Lanturn can take on the Electric-, Fire-, Ice-, and Flying-types such as Scarf Togedemaru, Pyroar, Aurorus, and Scarf Swanna that prevent Scyther from setting up with Swords Dance and sweeping late-game. Lanturn also has a great matchup against common Rocky Helmet users such as Weezing. Lastly, with the absence of Ferroseed and Gastrodon, Lanturn can even free up a moveslot for Dazzling Gleam, a potent move for two other Scyther checks: Sableye and Spiritomb.

Togedemaru (Togedemaru) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Zing Zap
- Iron Head
- U-turn
- Toxic

Forget Lanturn and instead turn your attention to the true best Volt-Switcher in the tier. Togedemaru and Scyther form a very fast offensive Volt-turn core. Furthermore they also share great type synergy. Togedemaru is able to pivot in on both Electric and Rock-type attacks which threaten Scyther indefinitely. Togedemaru also is able to threaten Pokemon that Scyther otherwise would not be able to touch such as Aurorus, Swanna, and Bulky Sensu.

Rotom-Frost @ Icium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard
- Defog

Rotom Frost Provides defog for scyther and forms a solid volt turn core. Scyther beats stuff like hitmonchan and dents electric immunities like lanturn whereas frostom can dent scyther checks like aggron.

I know he's a lobster not a crab just deal with it

Kingler @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Liquidation
- Stomping Tantrum
- Agility
- Ice Beam

Scyther+Kingler form a really cool physical setup core. Their combined power allows them to easily break through a lot of physical walls. Scyther takes care of most bulky Grasses like Tangela and Bellossom along with Poliwrath (which is probably one of the best Kingler checks rn) while Kingler beats most Flying resists like Regirock, Aggron, Aurorus, and Eelektross after rocks, while also beating Qwilfish with Stomping Tantrum. The only things they both struggle with are faster Electric-types like Scarf Togedemaru and Pom-Pom as well as Lanturn, but none of these can switch into an attack from Kingler safely.

Reserving Defensive Kanga

Kangaskhan @ Leftovers
Ability: Early Bird
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Impish Nature
- Whirlpool
- Rest
- Earthquake
- Return

So, scyther is walled by Steel and Rock type in the tier. This Kanga set can help lure and trap them so scyther can easily click Aerial Ace Later . You can run some speed on this kanga for outspeeding 0 spe Toge, but idt thats a common set.

Gurdurr @ Eviolite
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 HP / 192 Atk / 64 Def
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
- Bulk Up
Gurdurr is a fantastic partner for SD Scyther as it is one of the best checks to all the most common Scyther checks in the tier like Regirock, Togedemaru, and Lycanroc. as bulky setup sweepers they can jointly wear down bulkier teams really well leaving room for one of the other
to sweep. Pairing them with a Healing Wish Mesprit is a great start to any bulky offensive build.
