Cycle 85

:ss/tyranitar:

Tyranitar is the definitive sand setter for the currently trending sand teams in the tier, enabling many Pokemon with its chip damage while also enabling Sand Rush abuser Excadrill. Tyranitar also boasts a lot of potential as a stand-alone presence, what with Choice Band variants acting as a rather vicious abusers of its own sand, and specially defensive sets finding niches due to sand’s special defense boost letting it boast utility against threats like Blacephalon. Tyranitar has a rather vast movepool, boasting much potential for this project. Cannot wait to see what you guys make!

Rock Polish Tyranitar

Tyranitar @ Lum Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
JollyNature
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Fire Punch
- Rock Polish

Here we have a Tyranitar that uses Rock Polish + three coverage moves in order to outspeed some traditional revenge killers.
I think that this set has some value because Tyranitar has that strange 61 base Spe that allows it to outspeed a plethora of base 60 Spe (or below), which is pretty common base Spe tier to see around. Lum Berry allows to get rid of burn/paralysis that ruins our main features (our Atk, and Spe after a +2).

Reserving dragon dance

:Tyranitar: @ Leftovers/Life Orb
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 40 Def / 216 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Ice Punch/Fire Punch

Dragon dance :tyranitar: is a fairly well known set designed to wall break while also being able to clean up late game. The speed investment allows it to outspeed :kartana: and :ninetales alola: after a boost but you can run an adamant nature for extra wall breaking power vs trickier targets like :ferrothorn: for ice punch sets or :landorus therian: for fire punch sets. Life orb can also be used to increase :Tyranitar:’s wall breaking potential but it also limits its defensive utility vs mons like :blacephalon:, so it is not advised.

AV Special attacking Tyranitar

Tyranitar @ Assault Vest
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature / Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower
- Earth Power / Earthquake
- Dark Pulse / Thunderbolt / Power Gem / Superpower / Stone Edge

252+ SpA Tyranitar Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Ferrothorn: 308-364 (87.5 - 103.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after 1 layer of Spikes

252+ SpA Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 292-344 (76.4 - 90%) -- guatanteee 2HKO

252+ SpA Tyranitar Flamethrower vs. 40 HP / 104 SpD Melmetal: 214-252 (50.8 - 59.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Tyranitar Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 332-392 (102.7 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Tyranitar Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Kartana: 276-325 (106.5 - 125.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

The SpD boost from AV + Sandstorm, HP investment while keeping a good attack stat, and the ability to ignore contact-punishing abilities/items as well as Intimidate and the other morbillion things physical attackers have to deal with. You can also go as a mixed attacker with a Quiet nature and slot in things like Superpower as your fourth move to deal with Blissey, Earthquake over Earth Power, Stone Edge as your last move. Tyranitar just has a great movepool, so use it. This set has many possiblities, especially because opponents don't expect it.

CurseTar

Tyranitar @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 240 HP / 96 Atk / 84 Def / 88 SpD
Careful Nature
- Rock Blast / Rock Slide / Crunch / Payback
- Body Press / Fire Punch / Ice Punch / Earthquake / Crunch
- Curse
- Rest

240 HP puts it at 401 HP meaning Seismic Toss(and the rarer Night Shade) need 5 hits to take it out.
96 Attack EVs mean that at +1, 3 hits of Rock Blast or 1 Rock Slide guarantee the KO on defensive Tornadus Therian
+1 96 Atk Tyranitar Rock Blast (3 hits) vs. 248 HP / 92 Def Tornadus-Therian: 366-438 (101.3 - 121.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 96 Atk Tyranitar Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 92 Def Tornadus-Therian: 362-428 (100.2 - 118.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

84 Defense EVs allow it to take 2 defensive Landorus Earthquakes if it switches in while Tyranitar uses Curse
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. +1 240 HP / 84 Def Tyranitar: 168-200 (41.8 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
88 Sp.Def is the remainder to increase special bulk since it already is boosting its physical defense, however it actually allows for some crazy survivability, not that Tyranitar enjoys switching in on these hits though

252+ SpA Choice Specs Tapu Lele Moonblast vs. 240 HP / 88+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 288-338 (71.8 - 84.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Tornadus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 240 HP / 88+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 338-400 (84.2 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 240 HP / 88+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 140-168 (34.9 - 41.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Tapu Fini Hydro Pump vs. 240 HP / 88+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 162-192 (40.3 - 47.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Tapu Koko Dazzling Gleam vs. 240 HP / 88+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 176-210 (43.8 - 52.3%) -- 12.9% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Choice Specs Zapdos Thunderbolt vs. 240 HP / 88+ SpD Tyranitar in Sand: 120-142 (29.9 - 35.4%) -- 27.5% chance to 3HKO

This Tyranitar is designed to combine the boosting power of Dragon Dance Tyranitar with the defensive capabilities of standard Sp.Def. Curse allows it to act as a secondary win condition in longer games and with Rest it can keep itself healthy in the face of status conditions and chip damage. Moveslot one is your primary STAB move, ideally Rock Blast. Slot 2 can be one of Ttar's numerous coverage options to face threats as desired. The options listed here are just the tip of the iceberg, other moves like Iron Head/Heavy Slam could also be used there.

:blunder-policy: Blunder Policy:Tyranitar:

Tyranitar @ Blunder Policy
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 184 HP / 252 Atk / 72 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Dynamic Punch
- Ice Punch

This is more of a fun set, but without sacrificing too much of what makes Tyranitar good. Enough speed to outrun +nature base 110s after the boost. You either fire off dynamic punches and spread confusion, or can get lucky at the right time and pull off a sweep. Missing a critical stone edge and then getting the speed boost to land it the next turn before getting KOed was the initial idea behind blunder policy, but dynamic punch is just kinda cool.

Reserving my weird Offensive Rocks set

Berry Lure Rocks
:ss/tyranitar:
Tyranitar @ :chople berry: Chople Berry/:shuca berry: Shuca Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 96 HP / 176 Atk / 76 SpA / 104 SpD / 56 Spe
Mild Nature
- Crunch
- Stone Edge
- Fire Blast/Ice Beam
- Stealth Rock

This "thing" was born out of over tuning a sand team for it to fit specific needs. Tyranitar struggles to be a good rocker in my opinion mainly because of Lando-T and Corviknight who can both mostly switch into him with impunity and threaten him out. With mixed coverage in Fire Blast or Ice Beam, you make it much more dangerous for either to repeatedly switch into you, while also making life easier vs things like Ferrothorn or Garchomp respectively. 56 Speed EVs outruns min speed Corv, +76 SpA 2hkos Corviknight and Max/Max SpDef Lando-T, 176 Attack was left over from the 252 EV offensive budget, and the rest was invested into special bulk to allow Tyranitar to actually act like a soft ghost check for a few switches. It definitely relies on hazard removal since you can't slot Heavy-Duty Boots or Leftovers, and it can't act as an early game Knock Off absorber if the enemy team has either of the mons the set is built for. If they have both Corv and Lando Stone Edge will do the most damage for either mon that you are lacking coverage for. Also try not to eat too many U-turns, that shit hurts with Mild nature.

:chople berry:Chople+Fire Blast:

76+ SpA Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 88 SpD Corviknight: 188-222 (47 - 55.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
168+ Def Corviknight Body Press vs. 96 HP / 0- Def Chople Berry Tyranitar: 158-188 (43.2 - 51.5%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO

76+ SpA Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Ferrothorn: 316-376 (89.7 - 106.8%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Def Ferrothorn Body Press vs. 96 HP / 0- Def Chople Berry Tyranitar: 198-234 (54.2 - 64.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

:shuca berry:Shuca+Ice Beam:

76+ SpA Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 248-292 (64.9 - 76.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 96 HP / 0- Def Shuca Berry Tyranitar: 153-181 (41.9 - 49.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

76+ SpA Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Garchomp: 260-308 (61.9 - 73.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 96 HP / 0- Def Shuca Berry Tyranitar: 139-165 (38 - 45.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

I tend to prefer the Chople+Fire Blast set if Excadrill is your sand abuser, and Shuca+Ice Beam if it's Dracozolt.

Spdef DD (Tyranitar) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 144 HP / 20 Atk / 252 SpD / 92 Spe
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Stone Edge
- Dragon Dance
- Earthquake

The general purpose of this Ttar is to be a rocker, but is uses DD to get around the passiveness of your typical Spdef Tar. This set could also act as a surprise setup sweeper once the game is almost finished and your opponents mons are all heavily weakened. Edgequake gives the best neutral coverage, while 92 spe lets ttar outspeed utility Zapdos after a boost, while 20 attack evs ensure the KO on said Zapdos after the boost with stone edge.

Iron Defense

Tyranitar @ Chople Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 240 HP / 244 Def / 24 Spe
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast / Rock Blast

People seem to forget that my favorite Pokemon has a pretty beefy, respectable base 110 Defense stat. Let's utilize it!

This sets acts as a lure for some of Tyranitar's physical checks, such as Landorus-T, Kartana, Zeraora, Barraskewda, a weakened Buzzwole, etc. Chople is necessary for checking Kartana since Sacred Sword ignores stat changes. Ice Beam is also necessary for the inevitable Landorus-T that's going to come in against you, which you ignore its Intimidate when using the 4x effective move. Fire Blast for severely hurting Buzzwole, potentially taking out a weakened variant of it, Kartana before pressing Iron Defense, as well as hitting Ferrothorn hard while dodging Iron Barbs. Rock Blast is an alternative to hit Blacephalon, Pelipper on the switch, and Volcarona. HP is for turning Seismic Toss into a 5HKO, and the speed is for min-speed Blissey.

Tyranitar @ Expert Belt
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Whirlpool
- Fire Blast
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power/Thunderbolt/Stealth Rock/Stone Edge

Fun fact, Tyranitar learns Whirlpool. Most CB TTar switch-ins overlap with Excadrill, namely Landorus-T, Buzzwole, and physically defensive Corviknight, none of which appreciate a Fire Blast or Ice Beam to the face. Timid or a speed positive nature is needed to avoid being outrun by uninvested neutral Lando, while max special attack with the Expert Belt is needed to maximize damage and secure KOs after accounting for Whirlpool’s initial damage plus chip (and sand if relevant). Last move is a matter of preference and team need.

252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Whirlpool vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 62-74 (16.2 - 19.3%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Leftovers recovery and trapping damage
252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Landorus-Therian: 317-374 (82.9 - 97.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
(100% chance to OHKO after minimal roll from Whirlpool + trapping damage)

252 SpA Tyranitar Whirlpool vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Buzzwole: 51-61 (12.2 - 14.5%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after trapping damage
252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Buzzwole: 386-456 (92.3 - 109%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
(100% chance to OHKO after minimal roll from Whirlpool + trapping damage + sand)

252 SpA Tyranitar Whirlpool vs. 252 HP / 88 SpD Corviknight: 33-39 (8.2 - 9.7%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery and trapping damage
252 SpA Expert Belt Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 88 SpD Corviknight: 242-286 (60.5 - 71.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
(Still 2HKO after minimal roll from Whirlpool + trapping damage, Modest does not change this outcome)
