Presenting...

Welcome to the Power Rankings for the 7th edition of OMPL! This will be the first edition of these Power Rankings, with the goal of these rankings to hype up the upcoming few weeks and give a representation of where each team is believed to stand in relation to the other teams. To obtain these rankings, for every single Tier, we have asked 1 person from each team to rank everyone not on their team in that tier. To further reduce bias, the highest and lowest scores from each tier were removed when calculating the stats. The calculation for the total score is determined by the sum of scores for each tier; first place gets 8 points, second place gets 7 points, etc.

Even though we tried to be as unbiased as possible, it does not mean these rankings will be predicative of final results! If you or your team end up low on this power ranking, please don't take it to heart; this tournament is meant to be fun and it is up to you to prove opinions wrong! However, if you feel that your pride hinges on these rankings, you may feel free to voice your complaints here and they might be answered.

A big thank you to the following users who helped in the contribution for rankings: Ransei The Immortal power GL Volkner drampa's grandpa Funbot28 Zesty43 GarbodorIsHot Sitonai Arushi Megazard Chessking345 Andyboy Eien

A special shoutout to rozes for helping make the final spreadsheet and making the whole endeavor go smoothly.

It has recently come to our attention that Thimo is set to be traded for Zesty43, but unfortunately this process happened before we were fully aware of this situation.

As such, here is an "updated" and "fixed" viability rankings for the players:

I didn't know Thimo was a metagame. We should all play some Thimo. Zenithial is best at Thimo :)

And now...

OMPL VII Power Ranking Player Descriptions
As a follow up to this post, we have brief descriptions for each player in the prior power ranking! This was all planned out before trades went through and lineups went up but should still provide a good overview of the player-base this tournament.

As always, please do not take anything too seriously, as this is just meant to give the spectators more information and generate more hype for the upcoming few weeks. If you would like any changes to be made or have any complaints, you may send them here:

Big thanks to GL Volkner and Funbot28 for the BH descriptions, Andyboy and xavgb for the Mix and Mega descriptions, Betathunder and Funbot28 for the STABmons descriptions, and Xayah for the ZU descriptions.

And here they are:
Sylveon.: 1.6
Sylveon or geerat claims the top spot this OMPL after a dominating performance last year, going undefeated with a record of 7-0. While he lacks the support of AAA extraordinare jrdn this year, Sylveon has proved that he is capable of holding his own.

rozes: 2.4
Rozes is back in OMPL in AAA after an incredible WCOM performance, showing that rozes can easily hang with the best. This time however, with the help of jrdn and aesf on the team, rozes might be even able to outperform Sylveon as the top AAA player of the tour. Time will tell if he is up to the task.

Sabella: 2.6
Sabella rounds out the top 3 slots of an incredibly tough AAA pool this year. After going 5-1 in the last OMPL, Sabella has continued his form into WCOM, proving that he is able to not only play but also build the meta. With solid performances every time, Sabella is a sure contender for the top AAA spot this year.

hamhamhamham: 4
After a disappointing run in AG last year, hamhamhamham finds himself in AAA this time around. While he is not known for his AAA prowess, he did manage to put up a spectacle against Laxpras last year and even took out jrdn in the AAA Open. With proper support, ham may be able to surprise his competition.

motherlove: 5
Motherlove is back again to play in OMPL, this time in AAA. Known for his incredibly innovative builds, the only thing holding him back this time around is once again questions about his form. If motherrust can shake off the dust, he’ll be a force to reckon with.

racool: 5.4
While racool has not played seriously within the past year or two, she has recently been engaged in the meta. Back before she went on hiatus, racool was among the elite AAA players and builders; perhaps she will be able to bring back this form going into OMPL and put up a solid record.

itsKimbo: 5.8
While it can be argued that itsKimbo, also known as Jrdn Jr., went for far too much in the auction, others can say that maybe the creativity runs in the family. Kimbo has been slowly honing his skills, and while he hasn’t had major tournament success just yet, this OMPL may be his chance to shine.

lax: 6
It might seem weird that SPL Tiebreak Clutch Champion lax is ranked bottom on this list, but this just shows how strong the AAA pool is this year. The only thing holding lax is his lack of recent metagame knowledge, but if he gets that under his belt, lax can be a monster.

Zenithial: 1
Zenithial finds himself atop of a very tough AG pool this year, and for good reason. With a stellar 7-1 record last year in AG, Zenithial has shown that he is one of the most consistent performers in this tier. While there are questions about his activity as of late, if Zenithial can dispel those rumors, he is sure to dominate the AG field.

PurpleGatorade: 2.4
After a solid 4-2 performance last year, PG promptly decided to take a break before coming back on the scene with a dominating 5-1 record in UPL. With Catalystic as support, PG is expected to ride his momentum into OMPL to put up a solid AG record.

HunterStorm: 3.4
Touted as one of the best Anything Goes players ever, Hunter has been a bit out of the meta as of late. However, this was the same last year, yet he put up an incredible 5-1 record in the tough AG Bo3 slot. Perhaps Hunter can repeat his stint from last year and surprise the AG competition again.

Arushi: 3.8
After a decent 3-1 record last year in OMPL, Arushi has been consistently performing in various tours, landing her the 4th spot on this list. As one of the few who still strives to innovate in Anything Goes, her builds are always unique and can pack quite a surprise. Furthermore, Arushi has Pigeons for support in building, giving her an edge over many of her competitors. Be on the lookout for Arushi, as she might just be able to outdo her competition with a combination of fantastic play and fresh builds.

GarbodorIsHot: 3.8
Unlike his forum name, Skarpherim’s AG skills are not a joke. Reaching the finals of the AG Open shows his prowess in the tier, yet the immediate tilt that occurred afterwards has made him plummet on this list due to his long hiatus. While he has been getting back into the meta, it was enough to hurt his rankings significantly. Don’t count Skarpherim out however; he is still an incredibly tough opponent that is sure to perform in OMPL if he is motivated.

Megazard: 5.4
Known more for his PU play, Megazard is certainly no slouch in AG either. While his variety in team choices might not be as great as someone like Arushi, he is innovative and can build solid teams consistently. While there are doubts on whether MZ is in touch with the meta at the moment, he can definitely dispel them and take down many of his foes with proper preparation.

BaconEatinAssassin: 6.4
While BaconEatinAssassin is by no means a poor player, he lands himself 7th on this list of rankings, largely due to the incredible competition that he faces. Even with the support of Sitonai, Bacon will have a lot to prove in this tough AG pool. Only time will tell if he is able to take down his difficult opposition.

Zesty43: 6.4
Somehow Zesty43 finds himself at the bottom of the power rankings, something that is no where near indicative of his skill. However, Zesty has not played AG recently much, hence giving him a slight disadvantage in the tier. Even though he may be set to play Mix and Mega, Zesty’s AG skill should not be underestimated.

MAMP: 1
Probably the top pick of this draft, MAMP is known for using pretty much anything. An absolute wildcard to prepare for, and she has the skill to pilot her way through matchups that may not be in her favor. However, the immense pressure that her price tag brings can potentially hurt her chances of success.

GL Volkner: 1.8
Being part of the BH community for a couple years now, GL volkner has proven himself time and time again to be a staple in the BH metagame as a player and teambuilder alike. Being known to come up with great strategies and out of the box cores, GL Volkner can definitely catch even the most renown BH players off guard by his impressive teambuilding and playing skills. These claims are also backed up by his great performance in past OMPL and OMWC, despite him unfortunately dropping out of the BH ssnl and BH open early. Nonetheless, Volkner is a pioneer of the BH community and a threat to watch out for.

Gurpreet Patel (Sent you a Friend Request): 2.8
While a good player, he sometimes struggles to draw the line between unorthodox sleeper Pokemon and outright bad Pokemon. However, he’s improved in this regard and that error has become marginal, which makes him potent to prepare for. He tends to get upset very easily, which clouds his playing.

Sugarhigh: 4
Sugarhigh’s style relies heavily on getting matchup, but with a loser to support him and update him on what players use, he should be able to pull his price tag off. In addition, he’s definitely capable of playing well in the game on top of his ability to prep, and this makes sugarhigh an immensely solid player.

Jasprose: 4.6
Despite having Chessking to support him, Jasprose is coming off a year of rust and isn’t the player he was 2 years ago. While it’s definitely possible for him to come back from the rust and return to his 2017 form, it’s unlikely that this will happen early enough to overly impact his team’s chances. That being said, the earlier he can shake off his rust, the more potent he is, and at his prime form he’s more than capable of beating anyone in this pool.

Tzop: 5.2
Becoming more integrated into the BH scene this past year, Tzop has definitely made a name for himself making it all the way to the final rounds of the most recent BH ssnls. Taking games off
the likes of Pigeons, Chloe, and Akashi, Tzop can carry his skill from AAA into the BH scene with his recent performance proving his proficiency in the tier.

Pinkdragontamer: 5.4
Despite pinkdragontamer being away from the BH scene for a while, he returned to the meta a week or so ago and peaked top 10 on ladder, something other BH mains cannot do consistently. In addition, his teammates provide support and up to date meta knowledge. However, the level of competition is very high in OMPL so it’ll have to be seen whether or not pinkdragontamer can keep up.

DonnotheFirst: 7
While donno is a good BH player, he’s immensely rusty and hasn’t played BH seriously in a long, long time. His support isn’t that amazing either, especially since Akashi will likely be occupied with helping in other metas and nyan kat is also fairly rusty. He’s more than capable of an upset, but it’s heavily unlikely.

Andyboy: 1.4
Andy finds himself atop the power rankings this time around coming off of a solid 5-4 OMPL record last season. Since then, Andy has refined both his building capabilities and his playing to achieve consistency on both the ladder and in tournaments. Furthermore, having In the Hills as support provides more depth to his preparation, something that sets him above the rest of the competition. With these qualifications for the top spot, Andy is sure to put up a solid record even against strong competition in the Mix and Mega pool.

xavgb: 1.8
Stresh is the best player in this meta hands down. He knows how to build teams that play to his strengths and plans solid gameplans that are deadly and adaptable. However, despite his recent success in individual MnM seasonals, last year’s OMPL nightmare looms large and he has yet to prove he can put up an elite record in an OM team tour. Stresh is certainly powerful in Bo3 sets, but it isn’t incredibly uncommon for him to lose the first game, meaning in a Bo1 scenario, that would count as a loss. With that said, Geerat and Gman are highly underrated support options for Stresh. They are very well versed in the meta and creative enough to be a huge help prepping. Gman will also do whatever he can to lift his MnM starter’s spirits which could do Stresh some serious favors starting out in this tournament. It is a new year for Stresh expect him to put up a significantly better results over last OMPL.

Chazm: 2.4
Chazm is a bit of a weird spot. His last OMPL performance was incredibly impressive. However, that was a year where everything was working for him such as dodging Stresh and a legendarily poorly played game by Arifeen where he would have normally had a brutal matchup to deal with. He was also at the peak of his meta knowledge and his builds reflected that. There have been some warning signs for his prep recently such as redundancy in builds and a lack of understanding for what can work and what is too far off the deep end to be viable (mostly referencing the max speed Tailwind Cameruptite Magearna here). Despite this, Chazm has landed on a team that is a very good fit for him. He functions well as the solo MnM player on a team because he’s a strong enough builder to prep by himself. Chloe as a manager works well here because she definitely can support him if he wishes it but also has the tact to let him do his thing if he doesn’t wish it. Chazm has a few questions to answer this OMPL but is still a top 3 MnM player regardless.

Catalystic: 3.8
Catalystic finds his way into 4th for a few reasons. He got to the finals in the most recent MnM seasonal and has always understood how to play the meta and can build solid stuff to back that up. Skysolo provides additional intel for building and testing and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him play a few weeks as well. However, Cata’s main tier is still AG and while it is highly likely he will get considerably better at MnM during this tour and become an even larger threat, he is starting out with less knowledge of the meta and Cata hasn’t played anything besides AG in OMPL up to this point so it will be interesting to see how he performs in something different.

Eien: 4.8
Eien is clearly a skilled player and his skill translates into OMs better than the vast majority of tour players. There has been a bit of questionable consistency from him in past tournaments. He put up some impressive wins against Fardin and Andyboy in OMWCOP and his overall performance was very strong in that tournament. However, his one loss during pools was to Jucherz so that’s obviously not great. That said, if Eien decides to care and puts in effort to learn the meta he could do quite well. He doesn’t play like someone new to MnM and there are flashes of brilliance in his play at times. Mark K as support should work well here. Mark has proven he can support MnM very well in OMPL VI where he was an immense help to Jeran building and supporting his starter in any way he could. Overall, Eien has the potential to do very well but the inconsistency in OMWCOP and lack of experience in the meta (less than everyone here except for maroon) leaves a few questions to be answered for the Gogoat wielding Monotype TL. Regardless, it will be exciting to see what he does this OMPL.

Akashi: 5
While it’s a bit strange to see jeran ranked 6th, there are likely two reasons for this surprisingly low ranking; rust and teambuilding. As of late, Jeran either doesn’t wish to build his own teams or can’t because in his recent seasonal runs and in playing him myself, it seems he acquires the majority of his teams from post OM tour teamdumps and while he is skilled enough to pilot them well, it is difficult to trust someone who has a history of recycling his competetitor’s own teams to be able to prep well. He hasn’t made any big splashes in MnM tournaments lately and just doesn’t seem to play the meta much anymore. This normally wouldn’t be much of a bother considering he did very well in OMPL VI when he entered the tournament in almost an identical state to the one he is in this year. However, this time there is no Mark K to be found and the lack of any kind of solid support in MnM could prove to be a massive hindrance for him. Jeran always has doubters every OMPL so I suppose it’s up to him to prove to us that he can tear up the competition once again.

TectonicDestroyer: 5.8
TectonicDestroyer is in a tough spot. While it wouldn’t be surprising to find him supporting an MnM player on a team, it’s difficult to trust him in the solo starting slot on a team. There are serious questions to be answered about his ability to prep solid teams by himself and it is doubtful OM, Kimbo, Fissure or any other options they have on that team can help him enough with testing or building to make this work well. (Written before the Zesty trade that changes a lot here)

maroon: 7
Maroon lands in last for the unfortunate fact that he is the least experienced in MnM out of anyone playing in this tournament. His team choices in the few games he played last OMPL were very similar leaving doubts whether he can play any style other than what he used during those games. He’s not a bad player by any means, but Zesty isn’t there to help him this year and while SectoniaServant will do all he can to support maroon, this combo likely won’t have particularly amazing results.

Betathunder: 1
Council member and STAB player extraordinaire, Betathunder has definitely earned his rank as one of the most notable STABmons players in recent years. Not only has he shown a great performance in last years OMWC, but he has also dedicated a lot of knowledge and dedication in pushing forward the STABmons metagame, meaning that he can translate that knowledge in putting in a great performance this upcoming OMPL.

Cam: 2.6
Great player with a lot of insight of the STABmons metagame thanks to the most recent MonoWC as a STABmono player with one of the best records of that tournament. He also has support from Funbot (a STAB semi-expert and council member) to help support with his builds to elevate his skill.

aesf: 3
While not specifically renowned for his STABmons knowledge, aesf is a solid enough player to adapt to any metagame and use his AAA experience to help him push forward with his matches throughout the tournament. This is also helped by support from Jrdn who is known to be a great STABmons builder and can definitely help his teammates push for the wins.

Dr. Phd. BJ: 3
A STABmons ladder player that can use his expertise from laddering and translate it to tournament success. The doctor isn’t limited by playstyle either, sporting a versatile repertoire of teams of all archetypes. Whether blitzing or stalling out his opponents, he’s a scary matchup for any player to go up against.

w0rd: 4.2
With years and years of rust from the STABmons metagame and the pressure of living up to his former self, one can only wonder whether word’s once-solid skills and one-of-a-kind builds have stood the test of time. And with Diggersby no longer being relevant in the gen 7 Stabmons metagame, the only thing predictable about word’s teams is their unpredictability. If he can reclaim even a shadow of his former self, he’ll undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with.

Quantum Tesseract: 5
QT has been solid in almost all OMs throughout their career, with stabmons being no exception. That being said, they have taken a step away from the meta due to its lack of popularity in recent years, which may prove detrimental. That, in addition to some unorthodox teams, may lead to an erratic record. Nonetheless, this is my wildcard pick. -beta

In the Hills: 6
More known for his Mix and Mega abilities, In the Hills has chosen to try his hand at STABmons in this OMPL, leaving his teammate Andy to handle the Mix and Mega pool. While he has had a handful of games in WCOM, his STABmons abilities are still relatively unknown and are yet to be proven. This OMPL may be the tournament for him to demonstrate his versatility in another meta.

Shiba: 6.8
As someone who was once known for buying his current username, Shiba now finds himself playing an unfamiliar metagame. He has had solid tournament success however, which may translate to STABmons. With proper team support and preparation, he can put up a solid record.

RawMelon: 1.4
RawMelon has been hailed as one of ZU’s absolute best players for a long time, and it’s no surprise. Between highly consistent results in our seasonals and Opens, a well-deserved spot on the council, and even winning both Summer and Fall seasonals, he has always shown himself to incredible. He is unproven in team tours, however, and with his only support being rozes, he may struggle to build as effectively as others, though there is no doubt his own teams are very solid. As such, he’s highly likely to be a threat against any opponent and has the best chance of winning all his games out of every ZU player.

LPY: 2.2
Another top level player, LPY has not had quite the results that RawMelon has, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t match his skill. Often regarded as a top 3 player, LPY is always feared when fought in any sort of tour. His metagame knowledge is incredibly strong as well, as shown in his position as a council member, and he’ll undoubtedly be highly active too. Despite a lack of support outside of his manager Funbot28, LPY has a good chance to put down an excellent record this tour.

5gen: 2.6
5gen is not commonly seen as one of ZU’s absolute best players, but his building is nearly unmatched. Despite having little tournament success, everyone knows he’ll come out with incredibly solid teams every time, largely due to his immense understanding of the metagame. His position as TL also means he’s familiar with a large portion of the community, possibly allowing him to play around playstyles of many players as well. This is further boosted by support from his fellow TL Xayah, who was strangely picked up by the Tyrantrums as well, so there’s a good chance 5gen will perform admirably.

DurzaOffTopic: 4.4
For only 3k, the Sobbles managed to pick up a massively threatening player. Although his tournament results have been disappointing recently, Durza is known to have a more than adequate amount of playing skill and can put down solid builds as well. Support from czim is more than welcome too, as he is one of ZU’s top players. Together, they’ll certainly be able to put together good builds against any opponent. However, despite having been in the community for a long time, Durza has not gotten results as good as RawMelon or even LPY, so it’s uncertain what he’ll be able to pull off exactly.

Finchinator: 4.8
Finchinator is one of the best players on all of smogon, and that is likely why the Rayquazas picked him up. Of course, it’s undoubtedly that he’s one of the best players in the tour and he’ll certainly be able to get a few wins under his belt, but his inexperience may come back to haunt him. Finchinator’s main ZU experience comes from OM Snake last year, where he was supported by both Xayah and LPY. His record in that tour was good, but since then he’s showed little ZU play and so it’s unclear exactly how well he’ll be able to perform in a team where his support is limited to TonyFlygon.

a fruitshop owner: 5
A fruitshop owner is coming fresh off of his win in ZU Spring Seasonal, so there’s no doubt he knows what he’s doing. His builds were shown to be solid and his grasp on the meta is by no means bad. The problem lies mainly in him being fairly unproven. Despite his win in seasonal, he’s shown little prowess before that tour, and his ranking near the middle reflects that. He should not be underestimated, of course, as he has the potential to beat anyone on this list, but with no support to speak off, we’ll just have to see.

EviGaro: 5.4
EviGaro is a very good player, no one doubts that. Where the doubts come in is her ZU experience specifically. While she does join tours from time to time, she’s never gotten great results and we thus can’t set our expectations too high. She’s also the only ZU player on her team, so barring outside support, she’ll have to rely on her own builds, which she has so far shown little off. While she certainly has potential, we’ll have to wait and see whether or not she can bring it out.

Dj Breloominati♬: 6.2
As the losing finalist in ZU Spring Seasonal, Dj Breloominati has shown that he holds every bit of potential as a player. Unfortunately, that’s about it. After getting several activity wins on his road to those Grand Finals, some doubts about his playing ability remain. Outside of that tour, he’s also shown little, so we simply can’t be sure as to what he’ll be bringing out. His builds have looked shaky and no support on his team may put him in some trouble. Still though, it’s not like he only got activity wins. In the games that he won, he looked solid, and he has it in him to put down a solid record this tour. For him, it’s a chance to definitively prove himself as one of the best.

Hope we have a good OMPL!
