[Overview]

Considering Omastar's dominance in UU and the general dominance of Spikes in NU, of course we need to address even Omanyte's performance in the lowest tier. As the only Spikes user with a resistance to Normal and Flying in NU, Omanyte can earn a place on teams that absolutely require this quality. That said, it's pretty hard to justify Omanyte's usage when Roselia does its job so much better and happens to pair well with another Rock/Water-type in Relicanth, but if really do not want to use either (or Cacturne or Glalie for that matter), Omanyte may be able to fit your team.

[SET]
name: Spikes
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Surf
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Protect / Ice Beam
item: Leftovers
ability: Swift Swim
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]
- Get in on a Choice-locked Normal-type and spread Spikes
- Surf will deal a decent amount of damage to most things considering Omanyte's great base 90 Special Attack, easily 2HKOes Raticate and other frailer attackers
- Toxic pesky Water-types looking to switch in
- Protect scouts for Choice moves and stalls for Leftovers recovery
- Ice Beam can be used to deal a significant amount to Roselia switching in. Easily 2HKOes Pidgeot and Murkrow

[ADDITIONAL SET COMMENTS]
- Max Defense needed to make the most of its resistance to Normal and Flying
- Omanyte's Special Defense is atrocious and requires a teammate with special bulk to function. Pairs well with Bellossom and Tropius, as well as other generally specially bulky mons like Kecleon
- Needs a teammate to make use of its Spikes, phazers like Tropius and Flareon are prominent examples. Flareon can also pass Wishes to Omanyte to keep it healthy
- Fits best on balance teams that need role compression, want their Spikes user to be their Normal resist. Works well with Pupitar as it acts as a secondary Normal resist and will use them to set up Dragon Dance later in the match

[Other Options]
- Rain Dance
- Icy Wind, Haze, Thief

[Checks and Counters]
- Roselia
- Anything with a special attack
- Hitmonchan
