Wonder Guard VR Explanations:

:xy/xerneas: :xy/kyogre-primal:

These two Pokemon are the best Wonder Guard users in the metagame. While worse defensively, Xerneas outdoes its main competitor in Mega Audino overall due to its ability to pressure much of the metagame with Moonblast. In addition, Xerneas is an extremely potent SubPass user, which capitalizes on Moonblast's amazing offensive typing to force Magic Bounce users out, letting it set hazards with near impunity. Primal Kyogre has grown increasingly dominant as a support Wonder Guard that can force Primal Groudon out with Scald, and can run both physically and specially defensive sets; its amazing special bulk lets it tank Freeze-Drys from most attackers and even switch into some Choice Specs Mold Breaker users. Xerneas and Kyogre's strengths put them a fair bit above other Wonder Guards, and have been moved to the top of the Wonder Guard VR as a result.

:xy/arceus: :xy/audino-mega:

These two Wonder Guards, however, have fallen off quite hard. Arceus can still fulfill many useful support roles due to having a great defensive typing and stats; however, its Speed prevents it from being a truly effective pivot and somewhat restricts its movesets. Mega Audino's main issue is that it's outclassed by Xerneas due to its bulk not mattering in the majority of situations (for example, the vast majority of Huge Power and Protean users OHKO both Xerneas and Audino), but still has a substantial place in the metagame due to strongly checking Mega Gengar lacking Sludge Wave. Both Wonder Guard users have dropped because of these reasons, and can only realistically go down from here.

:xy/slaking:

Slaking isn't far away from Arceus viability-wise, and works about as well in practice because special Fighting-type moves are virtually non-existent. It's been raised to the top of A+ rank as a result.

:xy/scizor-mega:

Mega Scizor struggles slightly more due to Primal Groudon's reign; its physical bulk doesn't matter very much due to Groudon's dominance. It's also forced out often by the metagame's top Mold Breakers. That being said, it's still a solid scouter for Huge Power sets and a decent support set user so it only drops a little bit to #2 in the A+ rank.

:xy/mewtwo-mega-y: :xy/beedrill-mega: :xy/manectric-mega:

These three Pokemon have risen in popularity as the metagame has become slower and extremely fast Pokemon like Mega Aerodactyl lose ground. Mega Mewtwo Y has a good Wonder Guard typing, can fulfill support roles and hits strongly. Mega Beedrill hits slightly less hard, but threatens Psychic-type Wonder Guards with U-Turn, can support its team quite well, and is a great momentum grabber. Mega Manectric can run SubPass effectively by threatening Primal Groudon with Scald or Steam Eruption and annoy opposing Prankster switch-ins with burns. These three Pokemon's speed tiers getting better as Mega Aerodactyl becomes less relevant warrants rises to A rank.

:xy/cresselia:

Cresselia has great bulk, a good Wonder Guard typing, and slow enough Speed that it's a good pivot. While the weakness to Pursuit users is a concern in a good portion of games, its ability to support its team with a support moveset effectively calls for a slight rise to the top of A- rank.

:xy/dusclops:

Dusclops has a very similar role to Cresselia; in exchange for less item variability and more vulnerability to Knock Off, it isn't weak to U-Turn and is slightly slower. It can perform its job effectively enough that a rise to #2 in A- rank was warranted.

:xy/groudon-primal:

Despite its weakness to Ground-type moves (Fissure weakness is problematic but is only so in a relatively narrow portion of matchups), Primal Groudon is a strong Wonder Guard user because of amazing stats and STAB on great attacks in Thousand Arrows and Sacred Fire. A workable Speed and Thousand Arrows' near-perfect coverage means Groudon works as a SmashPass user. Offensive sets also work well due to Groudon's STABs and amazing offensive stats. The previous placement at B was far too low for it, and it has been raised to #3 in A- rank.

:xy/sableye-mega: :xy/swampert-mega:

Mega Sableye's typing has only one weakness, but its stats (bar Speed) are terrible. In fact, FEAR is Sableye's best set because one can't really count on it to check any metagame threats bar Huge Powers lacking Play Rough or Gastro Acid. Mega Swampert suffers from being outclassed by Primal Kyogre due to its 4x weaknesses to Freeze-Dry and Grass-type moves; however, it can take advantage of STAB Thousand Arrows to run diverse SmashPass sets. Both Mega evolutions drop to A- rank, with Sableye at #3 and Swampert at #7 within the rank.

:xy/regigigas:

Regigigas is outclassed even harder than Mega Swampert is by Primal Kyogre, being worse than Slaking in virtually any situation. However, it's not worse by a huge amount in practice, so a relatively conservative drop to B+ was made.

:xy/ho-oh: :xy/volcarona:

Both Pokemon may be weak to Stealth Rock (holding them back from rising much higher), but they're very good Huge Power checks due to how uncommon Electric, Water, and Rock-type moves are on them. Ho-Oh can also check Mega Gengar decently well without Stealth Rock on the field, while Volcarona can outspeed base-90s and has a spammable STAB in Blue Flare. Ho-Oh rises to B, and Volcarona to B-, as a result.

:xy/snorlax:

While it's 99% outclassed by Arceus, Slaking, or Blissey (depending on intended use), Snorlax rises slightly to C due to combining extremely low Speed with workable Attack, as well as special bulk that exceeds that of all common Wonder Guard users bar Primal Kyogre and Blissey.

:xy/electrode:

Electrode is completely outclassed by Mega Manectric and has no reason to be higher than C-. It is only on the VR because it can speed tie MMY and run extremely niche Pain Split strategies slightly better than Manectric.

:xy/darkrai:

As an offensive Dark-type, Darkrai is completely outclassed by Hoopa-U, and defensively it's outclassed by Mega Sableye. Darkrai is removed from the VR because it sucks.

Regular VR Explanations:

:xy/groudon-primal:

I'll be brief because I intend to write a post on Primal Groudon sometime soon.

Groudon is a top 2 Pokemon (debatably top 1) in the metagame, and isn't far off from Giratina. Due to its incredible stats, defensive typing, and STABs, it has a great many Mold Breaker sets and can run a vast number of support options (a few examples are Stealth Rock, King's Shield, Recover, Substitute, Nuzzle, Sacred Fire, and even Sheer Cold), and can fit on a variety of playstyles including ones that minimize its weaknesses, like spam or Sun. Its "checks" are nothing more than obstacles that Groudon can easily work around, for example with Choice Band Beat Up, Trick, paralysis, OHKO, or even indirect chip with hazards or Toxic. Additionally Mold Breaker isn't all it can run - it has a beastly Huge Power set that can outright remove opposing Giratina and revenge-kill most opposing sweepers, including traditional offensive checks like Mega Rayquaza, Mega Mewtwo Y, and Mold Breaker Mega Diancie. Groudon is also just barely worse than Mega Mewtwo X as a Huge Power coverage user because of how easily it can get in on passive Wonder Guards. In short, Groudon is versatile, unpredictable, and near impossible to check reliably. Altogether Primal Groudon is far above the likes of Mega Mewtwo X and Y and completely deserves a rise to S rank.

:xy/chansey: :xy/blissey: :xy/pikachu:

Imposter is crazy good in this metagame, not only because of the insurance it provides, but also because the user gains information about the opposing team that can be used to formulate a gameplan. This is especially important in this stage of the metagame, where Mold Breaker sweepers are the premier way to make quick progress. Additionally, Imposter users can pressure sweepers immensely in a game because of how they can run Choice Scarf (faking out Eviolite in Chansey's case) and potentially revenge-sweep. And last but not least, Imposter users put insane pressure on teambuilding, forcing answers to teams' offensive Pokemon on the same team. It's worth noting that Imposter would be even more effective with a better playerbase, as such a playerbase would innovate more and take advantage of all the strategies Hackmons allows for. Imposter users also have niche options in Plates and Light Ball Pikachu to pressure potential sweepers harder, though forgoing the guaranteed outspeed is a big sacrifice. All things considered, Imposter has a place in the metagame that warrants S rank placement on the Viability Rankings.

:xy/gengar-mega:

Mega Gengar benefits from a slower metagame, boasting a threatening Imposter-proof sets with amazing Ghost / Fighting coverage. Additionally, it doesn't make much of a sacrifice running Sludge Wave over Secret Sword, or even forgoing a sleep move to run a 3-attack set. Resisting Pixilate users is useful when Gengar is unboosted, and it's also immune to Shadow Tag and Huge Power Extreme Speed users (unless they opt for a situational coverage option in Shadow Sneak). All this outweighs Gengar's weakness to Pursuit and its waxing place in the metagame, and it has risen to the top of A+ rank as a result.

:xy/diancie-mega:

Mega Diancie is still an insane Shell Smash sweeper, but without King's Shield it struggles to deal with most -ate and Huge Power priority users. Its Pixilate set is also on the wane thanks to Primal Groudon's prominence in the metagame. Don't get me wrong, Diancie is still insane, but it drops just a bit due to its weak points.

:xy/arceus:

Arceus is a good Mold Breaker user, with good bulk, being untrickable, and having STAB Boomburst, but the lack of immediate power and Giratina's prevalence makes it difficult to use for less experienced players. It also struggles with running non-Mold Breaker sets, with Magic Bounce, its next best non-Wonder Guard (or No Guard) set, being fairly niche. On the flipside, however, Arceus spam teams are still highly effective, though perhaps slightly less so due to Primal Groudon necessitating switch-ins for it. Arceus' previous placement of A+ was too high for it, and it has dropped to the top of A rank.

:xy/latios-mega:

While Mega Latios has taken a relative backseat as a Mold Breaker user due to being vulnerable to Pursuit, priority users, and faster Pokemon in general, its newer set in Protean has taken off explosively, doing ridiculous damage to nearly everything. While Latios' lack of Speed relative to Mega Mewtwo Y is a slight liability, it doesn't matter significantly in-battle because of how easy it is to get it in against passive Wonder Guards. Latios' strong points mean it rises just a bit to #2 in A rank.

:xy/slaking: :xy/regigigas:

Not much has changed for Slaking and Regigigas; they fall a bit because Arceus and Mega Latios move to A rank above them.

:xy/gyarados-mega:

With Primal Groudon rising, what forces it out also rises as well. Mega Gyarados has STAB Pursuit, Water Shuriken, and Knock Off, allowing it to run a menacing Huge Power set that forces even King's Shield Primal Groudon out. Additionally, it has moveset options in Sucker Punch, Trick-Or-Treat, Gastro Acid, and even niche ones like Gunk Shot. With Primal Groudon taking to the forefront of the metagame Mega Gyarados' role has become ever more important, justifying a rise to the top of A- rank.

:xy/yveltal:

Yveltal, faces strong competition from Mega Gyarados as a Huge Power Pursuit user. While it may also have several other sets, like Regenerator, Magic Bounce, and Prankster, they're fairly niche sets that rarely strongly impact the outcome of games. Sets that check the likes of Mega Gengar and Mega Latios more reliably, such as Poison Heal and Regenerator, are vulnerable to Shadow Tag, while Shed Shell sets struggle with said sweepers. Yveltal has been lowered to A- rank, just below Mega Gyarados, as a result.

:xy/dialga:

Dialga can run an effective Mold Breaker set with Iron Plate Judgment, Spacial Rend, and Fire-type coverage in Blue Flare or Searing Shot. After a Shell Smash, it 2HKOes the vast majority of the metagame, and only Pokemon with extreme special bulk like Blissey can safely switch in. Iron Plate Dialga can somewhat prevent Choice Scarf Imposter users from making progress by pairing it with a Fairy-type Wonder Guard and Giratina. Dialga can also run Draco Plate so Prankster Giratina can Imposter-proof instead, although the weaker Steel-type STAB hurts its sweeping potential. Resistances to Aerilate and Huge Power FakeSpeed also help significantly. Dialga's strong points earn it a place in B- rank.

:xy/slowbro-mega:

Mega Slowbro hasn't been doing very well for itself, as it's basically outclassed by Giratina. Poison Heal is its best set, and even that is situational and only fits on bulkier teams; Huge Power users, some of what the set tries to check, can even break through. Fur Coat sucks due to Mold Breaker ignoring it, and Shadow Tag sets are unreliable due to the introduction of Shed Shell Primal Groudon. Slowbro drops to B- rank.

:xy/garchomp-mega:

Mega Garchomp struggles to compete with Primal Groudon, but it does have one valuable quality in being a physical Mold Breaker user that immediately threatens Giratina AND Primal Groudon. STAB Thousand Arrows and Dragon Claw mean that alternative options to Giratina must often come in, so Garchomp can grab KO's without too much trouble. That being said, having less bulk means it struggles with faster offensive Pokemon. All this means Garchomp rises to C rank.

:xy/altaria-mega:

Mega Altaria exists on ONE outdated team and is useless otherwise as far as the council knows, so it drops to D rank.

Some ramblings about Audino-Mega,

The Fall Of The RABBIT QUEEN.
Let me start by saying I like Rabbits. I love rabbits.
But a specific Rabbit is falling from grace. Audino-Mega.
Audino-Mega has been considered for a long time an amazing Wonder Guard. By a lot considered even the best.
But we have found out over time this is not the case. The meta has changed a lot these last few months to even the last year. Too much to go over here. This post is about white rabbits vs Big Rainbow deer My Waifu is Lopunny-Mega. Audino-mega I believe overshadowed Xerneas for a long period of time. Even now it still does. The problem is it's not as good as Xerneas. Xerneas just outclasses Audino-Mega. The main things that Audino-Mega has are normal typing, better bulk, and is slower Let me address these one at a time and why they're not as big as they first seem.

The "Audino-Mega is bulkier so it can run better pivot and utility moves". All mons in PH have the same exact move pool. This is the entire move pool that exists within the generation. Ok "But Bahamut it's safer when it's bulky". This is not really helping you much. I can't find anything extremely amazing. You live Some mold moves better you tank CB aero (without rocks). Most Wonder guards get chip damage because of lots of switching so you still get worn down to ko ranges. You still get sleep on or die vs huge powers with gunk shot or steel moves. Or also protean. The bulk really does not matter much at all. "BUT KINGS SHIELD". Stop right there. You still die to non-contact gunk shot from huge powers, most protean moves are non-contact including sludge wave, and status goes through the shield so it's situational really and is a really tiny niche at the cost of a move slot. Both Xerneas and Audino-Mega in summary can run all utility moves just fine.

Point 2 is typing. It's simple. The only mon that typing helps with is Gengar. Even Gengar can just completely murder you due to poison moves. So it only really "soft checks" or situationally checks Gengar. Also, you're actually slightly weaker to mold-breaker fighting moves but this is even more really small.

Point 3 You're slower. This is true. This is more of an equal level point I would say. Depends a lot on the match-up. But generally, it's very nice to be a good slow pivot. Sometimes it's nice to be really fast for offensive pressure. Again This can go either way but it's very good. This is more of a neutral and situational thing depending on the team.

Now the main thing the Rainbow force has over the white rabbit is power and speed. Speed like I mentioned in point 3 is a little situational but it benefits from shell smash. Mainly however it's all the attack moves it can run. Now if you are in the box of "it's just an iron plate smash 3 attack sweeper, therefore, its plate reliant and coverage reliant" Check its sets again. Many of its best sets don't need anything besides moonblast or play rough. In fact, it doesn't even have to be a sub-passer. There are tons of unexplored sets and physical sets considering it has the same exact physical as special attack and actually does damage, unlike audino-mega. Xerneas in summary may be the best match-up fish of a wonder guard but has TONS of other sets and options. Just as many as audino-mega does and more due to the ability to do damage with offensive moves.

The only real situations you want to use audino in over Xerneas are if you are running purely 4 passive/support moves or soft check Gengar-mega. Even then the letdowns of losing moonblast/play rough can be drastic due to the amount of pressure you lose. Still a good wonder guard but Audino is falling.

TL:DR Xerneas is the new champion.
Audino-mega sucks and we are overthrowing Ransei.

Groudon-Primal @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spore
- King's Shield
- Shell Smash
- Thousand Arrows

Primal Groudon is THE best offensive Pokemon (and possibly the best Pokemon overall) and I will hear no argument. The ability to run a single STAB attack with virtually perfect coverage, crazy pressure due to the possibility of running V-Create or a Choice Band set, resistance to most revenge-killing with available moveslot options, and ludicrous base stats make it a formidable force in the metagame, and I slap it on nearly every serious team I make. Spore, Shell Smash, and Thousand Arrows are all quite standard and are part of why this set is absolutely crazy, but the focus here should be on King's Shield. If you aren't familiar with the ORAS Hackmons metagame, the most common way to deal with boosted Mold Breakers is to revenge-kill them with a powerful priority user, such as Huge Power Slaking, Mega Gyarados, or an -ate user. King's Shield forces mindgames against revenge-killers at worst, and often lets Groudon sweep even high-level players. The EV spread I used lets Groudon outspeed Mega Aerodactyl (which is decently common, but really shouldn't be) at +2, and also reaches an HP number just above the threshold for an extra health point recovered by Leftovers every turn. Leftovers synergizes well with King's Shield and lets Groudon come in on hazards and Curse Giratina much more easily, being especially useful as Groudon forces switches, and therefore gains momentum, extremely easily.

:xy/giratina:

Giratina @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Encore
- Curse
- Roost

Giratina is widely regarded as the best Pokemon in ORAS Hackmons, and I'd even go so far as to say teams not running Giratina are inherently at a disadvantage against the vast majority of metagame teams. This is a fairly standard Giratina set that checks most of the myriad physical threats in the metagame. Will-O-Wisp neuters physical attackers that aren't Primal Groudon, Encore forces sweepers using Shell Smash out, and Roost is reliable recovery. Curse is an insanely useful move that chips powerful offensive Pokemon without recovery; losing 50% of health on use isn't as large of a cost as it seems, as Prankster recovery and careful playing let Giratina use it with impunity. A standard physically defensive EV spread lets Giratina eat hits from Groudon, MMX, and other physical attackers more easily. Safety Goggles lets Giratina Imposter-proof Groudon and Mega Diancie, as Giratina ignores Spore.

:xy/diancie-mega:

Diancie-Mega @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spore
- Shell Smash
- Judgment
- Steam Eruption

Mega Diancie's a fearsome Mold Breaker sweeper, due to powerful Fairy-type STAB forcing out the metagame's most common Prankster user in Giratina, a resistance to Pursuit, and being easy to Imposter-proof. Spore gives Diancie free turns against the majority of teams to set up; Shell Smash lets Diancie potentially sweep after one free turn. Fairy-type Judgment runs over much of the metagame, letting Diancie force out a significant portion of defensive counterplay, in particular Prankster Giratina and special walls like Yveltal and Ho-Oh. A 120-BP STAB also hits neutral Pokemon hard, 2HKOing standard defensive Arceus and nearly 2HKOing physically defensive Primal Kyogre; therefore Diancie doesn't even need boosts to force switches and give the player momentum. With Shell Smash, it OHKOes the majority of defensive Pokemon. In addition, using Judgment means that Giratina fully Imposter-proofs Diancie, letting it contribute even in a matchup against Imposter. Steam Eruption's a great coverage move that threatens most switch-ins to Judgment when boosted, such as Primal Groudon, Mega Scizor, and Ho-Oh, and can fish for burns in a tough matchup, against the likes of Registeel and Mega Venusaur. Maximum Special Attack and Speed are used for maximum effectiveness, with a Modest nature to 2HKO Arceus and OHKO Mega Latios with Judgment. Pixie Plate makes Judgment Fairy-type.

:xy/kyogre-primal:

Kyogre-Primal @ Shed Shell
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Defog
- Aromatherapy
- Recover

Regarded as the second-best Wonder Guard in the metagame, Primal Kyogre soft checks Primal Groudon and helps to scout a great many offensive Pokemon's movesets, such as against opposing Protean Mega Latios and MMY, Mold Breaker Mega Rayquaza, and even Huge Power MMX with Giratina. Scald lets Kyogre force opposing Groudon out and fish for burns against defensive Pokemon like Giratina and offensive resists like Mega Rayquaza. Defog and Aromatherapy support the team, removing hazards and status conditions that are detrimental in the long game. And reliable recovery is also essential. I used a physically defensive EV spread to scout more easily against Pokemon that can potentially be physical and special, like Mega Rayquaza and Huge Power MMY. Shed Shell prevents Shadow Tag users from trapping and removing Kyogre in most matchups.

:xy/xerneas:

Xerneas @ Leftovers
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Substitute
- Moonblast
- Baton Pass

Enter the best Wonder Guard in the metagame! SubPass Wonder Guard Xerneas prevents a wide array of otherwise problematic Pokemon from coming in, like Giratina, MMX, Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Latios, and frail Shadow Tag users. The set used's quite standard but still amazingly effective. Stealth Rock Xerneas takes advantage of the fact that the two most common Magic Bouncers - Giratina and Yveltal - both hate coming in on Moonblast, and so it can set hazards with near impunity. Substitute + Baton Pass is a potent combination that helps support Primal Groudon and Mega Diancie, as having a Substitute up usually means they have a free turn to set up. Additionally, Substitute can be used to scout to an extent, and Baton Pass can help to retain momentum as pivoting. Maximum HP and Special Attack, as well as being as slow as possible, helps Xerneas accomplish its task as well as possible, with Leftovers to heal from chip over time.

:xy/gyarados-mega:

Gyarados-Mega @ Lum Berry
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Water Shuriken
- Pursuit
- Knock Off
- Gastro Acid

Mega Gyarados is a really underrated pick in the current metagame, being able to switch into many common Mold Breakers and forcing 50-50s with a Huge Power-boosted Water Shuriken and Pursuit. Water Shuriken hits Primal Groudon, Mega Diancie, and a few frailer Mold Breakers like boosted Mega Gengar and MMY; while the move relies on hitting 3 or more times, that often isn't a concern as Gyarados is bulky enough to survive a hit from some boosted Mold Breakers, like from Sludge Wave Mega Gengar, from full. Pursuit nails offensive Pokemon switching out, often OHKOing MMX and Mega Rayquaza from full if they switch out. I chose to run Knock Off over Sucker Punch because the latter felt redundant with Water Shuriken (though, of course, it's still a great option) and running it meant Gyarados loses to Will-O-Wisp Giratina. Knock Off, contrary to Pursuit, punishes Pokemon for staying in, creating a 50-50 situation where if the opponent makes the wrong play their Pokemon gets either crippled or KO'ed. Gastro Acid is a cool tech I stole from Alexgrizz that's better than the standard Trick-Or-Treat in many situations due to Baton Pass passing Ability suppression and defensive Wonder Guards getting hit hard by Pursuit and Knock Off anyway. HP and Attack investment were used because Speed isn't as important on this set and Gyarados wants to hit as hard as possible. Lum Berry offers a second chance against Will-O-Wisp Giratina and for when Gyarados switches into Spore or Dark Void.

Replays

I can't really explain how to use the team because I make many decisions when playing by analyzing in an abstract way. To make up for that here are some replays from laddering that show the team in action!

________________________

Whew! From this I can say one thing: This ladder sucks At some point (starting from around the mid 1800s) climbing the ladder becomes more about endurance than actual playing skill. While skill correlates with peak Elo or at least what one can get to, actually getting there is much more demanding than the skill required to do so suggests. I probably won't aim for higher anytime soon, but I believe if a top player truly wanted to they could get past 1950, or maybe even 2000. Nevertheless, I'm glad I got this far and feel free to try this team! You can find the importable below or in the ORAS Hackmons hub.

Not really. Geodude, Larvitar and Graveler are worse.

As for Pokemon who should be placed on the Wonder Guard list, I'd like to nominate Zapdos and Thundurus -
Zapdos/Thundurus (D Tier) -
- Whilst the Ice-type and SR weakness is never appreciated on any Pokemon, it hard walls most Huge Power sets; if they run coverage for Ho-Oh, they cannot properly prepare for Zapdos simultaneously (Unless if they're running Diamond Storm, which in that case you're allowed to laugh at them). Thundurus may be more appreciated as it hits 353 Speed, allowing it to outspeed some offensive threats like Primal-Groudon and Lati@s.

Wonder Guard VR Explanations:

:xy/slaking:

Slaking actually outdoes Arceus as a Wonder Guard due to its higher HP stat, lower Speed, and the fact that Normal-type Wonder Guards are nearly never getting hit by a special move. Its higher HP means Slaking can WishPass more effectively, and its lower Speed means it can pivot slightly more effectively with Baton Pass. It has been moved just above Arceus as a result.

:xy/arceus: :xy/audino-mega:

Arceus and Mega Audino suffer from competition from Slaking and Xerneas respectively. The metagame has become increasingly hostile to Audino in particular, however, as Mega Gengar turn to Poison-type coverage more often, Gunk Shot continues to be vastly more popular than Gear Grind as a coverage move on Huge Powers, and the likes of Primal Groudon, MMY, Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Latios are still ludicrously threatening. Arceus drops slightly to the bottom of S rank, and Audino drops to the top of A+ rank.

:xy/escavalier:

Escavalier has proven to be very close in viability to Mega Scizor and Genesect, as Scizor's bulk isn't really impactful when it drops to Fire-type coverage regardless and Genesect, while a solid offensive choice, cannot pivot as easily or immediately threaten as much in the metagame. Escavalier boasts a fearsome STAB move in Gyro Ball and can pivot effectively due to its extremely low Speed Stat. It's been raised to just below Scizor and Genesect as a result.

:xy/blissey:

Blissey has become progressively more useful in the metagame as most offensive Mold Breakers forgo Secret Sword and Psystrike for alternative options, for example with Mega Gengar favoring Sludge Wave and Choice Specs MMY tending to run Psycho Boost instead. In addition Blissey has a monstrous HP stat, and decently low Speed, that lets it WishPass effectively. All this means Blissey rises to the bottom of A+ rank.

:xy/sableye-mega: :xy/swampert-mega: :xy/groudon-primal: :xy/drapion: :xy/skuntank:

The A- rank has been reorganized, with the Pokemon in it being ordered in a more logical manner. Primal Groudon fell slightly because running it means players struggle more against niche No Guard Fissure users and Water-type moves; Mega Sableye rose to make up for this. Mega Swampert rose due to being able to run a decent SubPass set with the same spammable STAB as Groudon, while also being a safer option against No Guards lacking Freeze-Dry. Drapion and Skuntank remain at the bottom, as Ground-type weakness and relatively low base stats make them more difficult to use than the other Wonder Guards in A- rank.

:xy/ditto:

Ditto has largely fallen off, as the standard Dark Void + SubPass set is inconsistent due to Magic Bounce Giratina's prevalence; it drops to B rank because of this.

:xy/deoxys-attack: :xy/durant: :xy/ludicolo: :xy/ferrothorn:

These four Pokemon rise for being decent alternatives to metagame Wonder Guards. Deoxys-Attack outspeeds opposing MMY and can threaten a good bit of the metagame with its titanic attacking stats; it's also deceptively easy to Imposter-proof, with even relatively weak moves like Shadow Sneak OHKOing Imposter Chansey. Durant outspeeds Deoxys-Speed with a Choice Scarf set and can run Trick effectively, forcing frailer Psychic-types to switch out by threatening U-Turn. Ludicolo checks King's Shield Primal Groudon while walling Huge Powers lacking Gunk Shot. Ferrothorn works like Mega Scizor or Escavalier, except it trades its Fighting-type weakness for immunity to Spore. Deoxys, Durant, and Ludicolo rise to B, and Ferrothorn to B-, as a result.

:xy/ho-oh:

Ho-Oh's a solid check to Huge Power users and some special Mold Breakers, but struggles a little more as Fusion Bolt is increasingly appealing for Huge Powers to use due to Mega Swampert dropping in usage. Special Mold Breakers like Mega Gengar and Mega Sceptile can also just muscle past it with some luck. Stealth Rock weakness also cripples Ho-Oh, forcing it to be run with a Magic Bouncer most of the time. Its flaws and shortcomings mean Ho-Oh drops to B-.

:xy/gardevoir-mega:

Mega Gardevoir's Xerneas but with more Special Attack and a Ghost-type weakness, meaning it's really not that much worse. Gardevoir makes its debut on the Wonder Guard VR at C+ rank.

:xy/regigigas:

Regigigas is straight-up worse than Slaking as a Wonder Guard except for in a few extremely niche interactions, as it has inferior physical bulk and can't WishPass as easily. In theory its better special bulk does something, so it stays on the VR, but at a much lower spot of C rank.

:xy/alakazam-mega:

Mega Alakazam's placed on the VR because its Speed is near-unmatched in the metagame, has the Special Attack to potentially threaten switch-ins, and isn't as prone to getting OHKOed as Deoxys-Attack; however, it's near impossible to actually justify running on a team so it finds a modest spot at C-.

:xy/rotom-fan: :xy/thundurus: :xy/thundurus-therian: :xy/zapdos:

These four Pokemon are actually the best Wonder Guards weak to Sheer Cold, as they wall every Huge Power combination remotely worth running, earning them a place of C- on the VR. That weakness to Ice-type moves, however, hampers them sufficiently that they're effectively barred from going any higher.

:xy/gengar-mega:

Wonder Guard Mega Gengar's a fast Ghost-type that can offensively pressure most Prankster users and Mold Breakers while SubPassing, and is, despite a weakness to Ground-type moves, therefore good enough to warrant a spot in D rank.

:xy/banette:

We forgot that in ORAS the Banette + Banettite combination doesn't actually work, so it's removed from the VR.

Regular VR Explanations:

:xy/latios-mega:

With recent metagame developments, Mega Latios, already a force to be reckoned with, is even more terrifying to face than before. Primal Groudon being overwhelmingly more powerful than the likes of MMX and MMY on the supermajority of balance teams means that running slower but stronger threats is more feasible, and Latios straight-up abuses this. Its Protean set reaches power levels that rival that of Huge Power users, OHKOing the vast majority of Wonder Guards with the right coverage move. The metagame's relative centralization around Wonder Guard Xerneas + Primal Kyogre + Giratina cores means that, with optimal coverage moves, Latios can grab a KO every time it switches in. Mold Breaker Latios is also insanely threatening, as the Soul Dew boost means that after a Shell Smash Dragon + Fire move Latios is simply impossible to switch into without the nearly unseen PrankHaze Chansey. It does have a few flaws, notably that it relies on SubPass users, to an extent, to deal damage safely, and that faster Pokemon like MMX and Mega Gengar force it out easily, but Latios' strengths make it completely deserving of A+ rank.

:xy/gyarados-mega:

Mega Gyarados also benefits from Primal Groudon's dominance, boasting powerful priority in Water Shuriken and Sucker Punch, a way to punish switches in Pursuit, a scary conventional attack in Knock Off, and options to force switches more effectively in Gastro Acid and Trick-Or-Treat. Additionally, Gyarados targets other prominent Mold Breakers in Mega Gengar, Mega Diancie, and to an extent Mega Latios and Mega Tyranitar, so it's a threat in the vast majority of matchups. Altogether Mega Gyarados is threatening enough to warrant a rise to A rank.

:xy/yveltal:

Yveltal suffers from competition with Mega Gyarados as a Huge Power Dark-type, Ho-Oh and Primal Kyogre as a Mega Gengar counter, Giratina as a Magic Bouncer, and Mega Rayquaza as a Gale Wings user. It's a Pokemon that tries to be too much, instead not doing anything significant at all. Yveltal lacking truly justifiable sets to run means it falls to near the bottom of A- rank.

:xy/tyranitar-mega:

Contrary to Yveltal, however, Mega Tyranitar's been on a roll lately, as its STABs are near-unresisted in the metagame, it forces out the metagame’s most prominent Prankster user in Giratina, and it has the natural bulk to withstand hits from most revenge-killers. Mold Breaker Tyranitar's most successful sets have used both Beat Up (or Knock Off) and Diamond Storm, with Spore or King's Shield and Shell Smash filling the other two moveslots. While it faces competition from Mega Gyarados, Huge Power Tyranitar is still a strong set and adds to Tyranitar's viability. A- rank is a good spot for Mega Tyranitar at the moment.

:xy/lugia:

Lugia's a great Shadow Tag user because of its fast Speed for a defensive Pokemon, great bulk, and a good typing to switch into the majority of the metagame. After switching in, it can use Encore for free turns to set hazards, recover, use Perish Song to remove the foe, or sometimes grant the user free momentum. Additionally Lugia can run niche Poison Heal, Magic Bounce, and Regenerator sets that add to its overall viability. Overall Lugia's better than the Pokemon in the entirety of B-rank and this is met with a rise to A- rank.

:xy/dialga:

Dialga appears to be better than ever as a Mold Breaker user, as its typing is great offensively and even greater defensively. Coupled with its bulk, it can sweep a good number of teams, due to it resisting Extreme Speed, Water Shuriken, and moves affected by Aerilate and Gale Wings. It can run Draco Plate Judgment and Searing Shot for easier Imposter-proofing, or it can opt for incredible Steel/Dragon/Fire coverage with Shell Smash as a setup move. Dialga's versatility and newfound status as a legitimate threat mean it makes a jump from B- to B+.

:xy/steelix-mega:

Mega Steelix struggles from competition with Registeel as a bulky Steel-type, as better special bulk tends to be more impactful than Steelix's superior physical bulk. This is due to a number of different factors, most notably -ate users running Boomburst more often nowadays than Fire-type coverage like Sacred Fire and V-Create. However, Steelix still performs its role fairly well and doesn't require mental gymnastics to justify running, so it drops just a subrank to B.

:xy/chansey:

Chansey was initially overestimated as a special wall, as it falls flat against the likes of Psystrike Mega Latios and MMY as well as Secret Sword Mega Gengar. However, Chansey hardwalls many prominent Mold Breakers like Mega Diancie, Mega Gengar lacking Secret Sword, Dialga, and Arceus, so it only drops slightly to B- rank.

:xy/aerodactyl-mega:

Basically Mega Aerodactyl's outclassed and bad so it drops two whole letter ranks, from A+ to C+.

Mega Aerodactyl has been considered a defining Pokemon in the EV-limited metagame pretty much since its inception. Its ability to 2HKO opposing Pokemon as a Mold Breaker set with a fearsome STAB move in Dragon Ascent, force out MMX with its amazing 150 base Speed, grant the player near-free momentum with U-Turn, and annoy switch-ins like Giratina and Mega Slowbro with Sacred Fire burns made it seem like a devastating threat, unmatched by nearly any other Pokemon as an offensive Pokemon that also acted as speed control. Mega Aerodactyl's Shadow Tag sets, both the Encore + Perish Song and Choice Band variants, were also considered very high tier as in an early metagame they removed passive Pokemon with near impunity. Altogether Mega Aerodactyl was considered dominant to the point that Mega Aerodactyl was S- rank on the Viability Rankings.

However, this image of Aerodactyl being a defining force in the metagame has gradually shown itself to be misleading. As metagame development progressed, physically defensive Giratina was seen on nearly every good team, Shed Shell became a much more common item and bulkier Mold Breakers, like Primal Groudon and Arceus, started to be seen more frequently. Until the past few months, however, Mega Aerodactyl was still deemed very threatening because it could force out some of the metagame's most potent threats in MMX, MMY, and Mega Gengar.

Today we know that Aerodactyl's supposed place in the metagame is a myth. Calcs show that Adamant or Naughty nature Choice Scarf Mega Rayquaza can hit nearly as hard with Dragon Ascent as standard Aerodactyl sets; they also have the option of running moves like Draco Meteor and Steam Eruption much more easily. Additionally, Rayquaza can run Trick to a much greater extent, as even after its Choice Scarf is removed it can force switches effectively - Aerodactyl cannot do this as it's heavily reliant on its Choice Band to deal sufficient damage to force most targets out. In the end Aerodactyl's only niche as a Mold Breaker or offensive Shadow Tag user is getting a couple of extra OHKOs that Rayquaza doesn't quite get, such as against Yveltal and Ho-Oh from full, and that just isn't worth it in the vast majority of circumstances. The likes of Choice Scarf Rayquaza and Aerodactyl are suboptimal choices as speed control anyway, as most Shell Smash users outspeed both Pokemon when boosted. Support Shadow Tag sets are generally outdone by Lugia as the prevailing team archetype uses SubPass Xerneas (or overall weaker alternatives like Mega Swampert or Primal Groudon) and Wonder Guard Primal Kyogre, Slaking, or sometimes Mega Scizor, Escavalier, or Blissey, generally slower Pokemon. Some of these Pokemon can also force Aerodactyl out with attacking moves like Moonblast, Scald, or Thousand Arrows. Once again, Mega Aerodactyl is relegated to niche status as it's only better for opposing fast Wonder Guards like support Mega Beedrill or MMY. One extra problem Aerodactyl faces is Pursuit; after removing a Pokemon it can be revenge-killed very easily by Pursuit users due to it being relatively frail and usually not OHKOing revenge-killers.

Due to the reasons mentioned above, Mega Aerodactyl is ultimately a niche Pokemon, and its placement on the VR has been lowered drastically, from A+ to C+ rank, to reflect this.

:xy/abomasnow-mega::xy/blissey:

Mega Abomasnow and Blissey are outclassed, but one can still justify running them in many situations. Abomasnow's an -ate user that's immune to Spore and switches into King's Shield Primal Groudon, an incredibly valuable trait. Blissey can run Shed Shell to be more resilient in a Shadow Tag matchup, which Chansey cannot do; it doesn't miss out on a substantial amount of bulk either. Both Pokemon rise to C+ rank.

:xy/aegislash: :xy/banette-mega: :xy/audino-mega: :xy/hoopa-unbound:

These Pokemon are generally outclassed, but have tiny niches that still justify placement on the VR. Aegislash is a Steel-type that can make use of Curse, Mega Banette is a priority user that’s immune to Shadow Tag, Mega Audino can run fringe Prankster sets, and Hoopa-U can run mixed sets and can dent Imposter with Hyperspace Fury. Aegislash drops to C-, and the other three Pokemon drop to D rank.

:xy/gardevoir-mega:

Mega Gardevoir has good STABs and an impressive Special Attack stat, letting it run both Shell Smash and Choice Specs Mold Breaker sets. The council believes Gardevoir's better than other Pokemon initially in D rank, so it rises slightly to C-.

:xy/giratina-origin:

Giratina-Origin can run an interesting Mold Breaker set, with Final Gambit, Ghost-type Judgment, recovery, and either a hazard or status inflictment like Glare or Nuzzle. This set's shown to be good enough for Giratina-O to be ranked, so it rises from E to D rank.

:xy/aggron-mega: :xy/doublade: :xy/swadloon: :xy/shuckle:

None of these Pokemon are even remotely viable, and most of these are relics of earlier stages of the metagame. Mega Aggron is utterly outdone by Mega Steelix, as it has worse overall bulk and no relevant advantage that sets it apart. The only thing Doublade does is checking Huge Power users, meaning it’s a sitting duck in a good 80% of matchups; it doesn’t even do this properly, as Knock Off variants with either Thousand Arrows or Sacred Fire as coverage blow past it. Swadloon does absolutely nothing when Leavanny walls Primal Groudon just as well and isn’t vulnerable to Shadow Tag. Shuckle’s just a mediocre Magic Bounce user in general, not actually being that bulky and not resisting much of the metagame, meaning one wouldn’t be able to justify running it over a different Magic Bounce user. All four Pokemon are removed from the VR due to them being completely outclassed.

As for more Pokemon that could be moved -

Kyogre-Primal -

This Pokemon actually has a fair bit of utility it can abuse.
- Base 150 Attack means it can run Huge Power sets to bait Specially Defensive checks and remove them from the game, allowing it to synergize well with Pokemon like Mega Diancie and Mega Gengar, who appreciate the removal of specially defensive Pokemon. Primal Kyogre is also only slightly weaker in the attacking side than Mega Gyarados.

- This Pokemon can also be used to smash through walls. Whilst its low speed is not appeciated for obvious reasons; this is backed up by its ludicrously high special attack, decent bulk (even with zero investment) and STAB Scald which can spread burns to even those who survive its hits. Kyogre also synergizes well with a Drizzle user which gives it a free, massive boost in all of its Rain hits, which allows Kyogre to outdamage Recover from Giratina. Substitute may be used over Judgment, as Scald hits enough Pokemon anyway.
Kyogre-Primal @ Pixie Plate / Lum Berry
Ability: Mold Breaker
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shell Smash
- Scald / Origin Pulse
- Judgment / Substitute
- Spore

- Not only does it have offensive merits, but Kyogre acts as a very good RegenVest Pokemon as well. Base 160 Special Defense is not to be understated and it has the ability to wall many specially offensive threats.

Overall, its ability to use many sets and be unpredictable merits a raise as it can run sets to break past special checks (which allows it to synergize well with a few Pokemon)

It's been nearly six months since I've posted anything here and I might try to make more posts again. I don't know. I haven't been able to put the energy into making these posts since until now.

However today I have a niche idea to share that could work for Gen 7 Pure Hackmons if given enough support.

:Solganium Z: :Lunalium Z: :Ultranecrozium Z:
Ok so we know how Mold Breaker moves and their CFZ variants are. They are incredibly oppressive and destructive to the current metagame. Mega Mewtwo X is currently considered to be the number 1 Pokemon and for good reason. Hardly any Pokemon can properly wall most of its sets. Nothing can wall all of them.

Let's take a couple of our most powerful attackers for example and pair them up with calcs against their best walls.

The Walls
:sm/zygarde-complete:
Zygarde-Complete is the most physically bulky Pokemon in the game.

:mewtwo-mega-x: 252+ Atk Huge Power Mewtwo-Mega-X Photon Geyser vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Zygarde-Complete: 301-355 (47.4 - 55.9%) -- 79.3% chance to 2HKO - It cannot properly switch into Adamant Photon Geyser.
:mewtwo-mega-x: 252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Mewtwo-Mega-X Photon Geyser vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Zygarde-Complete: 451-532 (71 - 83.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO - This is additional damage with Choice Band. It will still 2HKO if the Mega Mewtwo X is Jolly.
:mewtwo-mega-x: 252+ Atk Huge Power Mewtwo-Mega-X Light That Burns the Sky vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Zygarde-Complete: 603-709 (94.9 - 111.6%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO - Adamant Mega Mewtwo X has a high immediate OHKO chance with Light That Burns The Sky.

:sm/steelix-mega:
Steelix-Mega has the best chance of walling Mega Mewtwo X, Ultra Necrozma, and Necrozma-Dusk-Mane's physical moves due to having an insane base 230 Defense, higher HP than Mega Aggron, and a resistance to their best STAB. It can wall the average Mega Mewtwo X set just fine but things can quickly go out of hand with an unexpected set.

:mewtwo-mega-x: +2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mewtwo-Mega-X Light That Burns the Sky vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Steelix-Mega: 367-432 (103.9 - 122.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO - This Pokemon can run Huge Power Shell Smash/Extreme Evoboost + Light That Burns The Sky to OHKO Fur Coat Mega Steelix
:necrozma-ultra: +2 252+ Atk Huge Power Necrozma-Ultra Light That Burns the Sky vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Steelix-Mega: 332-391 (93.7 - 110.4%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO - Ultra Necrozma can do mostly the same while being able to use four other attacks.
:necrozma-dusk-mane: +2 252+ Atk Huge Power Necrozma-Dusk-Mane Searing Sunraze Smash vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Steelix-Mega: 317-373 (89.8 - 105.6%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO - This Dusk Mane has 0 walls. Mega Steelix was your best option :blobshrug:.

:sm/slowbro-mega:
Mega Slowbro is seen as a common answer for physical attackers in the game because of its resistance to Mega Mewtwo X, Necrozma Dusk Mane, Ultra Necrozma, and Primal Groudon's main STAB moves all at once.

:mewtwo-mega-x: 252 SpA Mewtwo-Mega-X Moongeist Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Slowbro-Mega: 206-244 (52.4 - 62%) -- guaranteed 2HKO - Mega Mewtwo X can opt for Moongeist Beam to 2HKO Mega Slowbro. Ultra Necrozma upscales from this due to having higher SpA.

In addition, Mega Slowbro takes more damage than Mega Steelix overall in all the calcs above.

:sm/doublade:

I've ran out of "proper" walls to showcase. Mega Steelix tanks more damage physically and specially than Eviolite Doublade.

It's not very difficult to set up a Shell Smash or Extreme Evoboost at least once in a game so seeing just the Extreme Evoboost Huge Power Dusk Mane calc above left me mortified. I had to think about if there was some way of at least ensuring a Pokemon couldn't get outright OHKOed by such a set. Unfortunately for us, Mold Breaker moves break through Fur Coat, Wonder Guard, and every single other defensive ability... except one!

:sm/lunala:
Introducing Shadow Shield! It's not much but aside from flinging Innards Outs in hopes of them doing anything, this is the best we have in terms of raw defensive capability. Shadow Shield functions entirely like Multiscale in that the user takes half damage if they are at full health, but unlike Fur Coat, unlike Wonder Guard, unlike even Multiscale, Shadow Shield cannot be immediately broken through by moldy moves. Our three great walls above (and Doublade) can now take A hit from some of the most brutal offense sets in the metagame. Players would need to pair them up with a hefty defogger to make sure these walls are at full health. A Wish Pokemon like Mega Audino for support could also help.

Here's an example of a set:
:sm/steelix-mega:
Steelix-Mega @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Shadow Shield
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Strength Sap
- Defog
- Sacred Fire / Will-O-Wisp
- Baton Pass

You can run Strength Sap to heavily punish your foes by getting back to full health after taking a hit. This restores your Shadow Shield in return. Having Defog right from the get go is great because you can secure your next switchin, Sacred Fire and Will-O-Wisp can also harshly punish your target by leaving them with a burn, allowing more of your Pokemon to wall the opposition, and Mega Steelix can take advantage of its incredibly poor speed to build momentum with Baton Pass.

Aside from the extensive need for Defog, the other real issue with this set is that if Huge Powers start to run Leppa Berry Shell Smash one day then there will inevitably be no switchins and you have to come in after sacking something. You can also never ensure your opponent wouldn't try other CFZ moves like 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt, Oceanic Operetta or Menacing Moonraze Maelstrom alongside already powerful coverage moves to blow past thest walls. Either way anything is better than nothing and I'm hoping Shadow Shield can at least occasionally work out just fine.

Interesting.

By the way, why aren't protection moves (i.e Spiky Shield/Baneful Bunker) run to lower the power of CFZ moves? They can be used to scout any potential CFZ coverage; and will quarter the damage in the case of a CFZ if any are run. Is it due to opportunity cost, or another factor?

Unfortunately CFZs completely ignore protection.

Protection works on crystalized Z-Moves though

More mons to nominate for VR -

Chesnaught - UR -> D

Chesnaught @ Shed Shell
Ability: Primordial Sea
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Recover
- Drain Punch / Close Combat / Focus Punch
- Scald
- Toxic

This Pokemon walls every set remotely worth running on Primal Groudon, and is especially helpful for the rare U-Turn. What sets it apart from Pokemon like Tangrowth and Leavanny is its ability to pressure Pokemon such as Slaking and Arceus to swap out, often giving it a free Toxic off in the process. Whilst it cannot 2HKO Arceus or Slaking outside of Focus Punch, it allows Chesnaught to get a free Toxic off no matter what move they click next.

Altaria-Mega - D -> UR

What does this Pokemon do that other Dragons or Fairies don't already do better? This just feels like that one Pokemon that's remained there for some unknown reason despite not having a use.

Salamence-Mega - D -> UR

Just run Mega Rayquaza. There is no way in hell you can justify running this Pokemon over Mega Rayquaza, no matter the amount of mental gymnastics you go through.

Shedinja - C+ -> UR

Shedinja is now more of a liability than an actual good Pokemon. With the rise in popularity of Mold Breaker Pokemon like Latias, Primal Groudon and whatnot, alongside hazards being everywhere, No Guard Deoxys dropping in usage and Wonder Guards generally making Shedinja's life harder in general, Shedinja has fallen from grace in this meta.

Teams will have to be built entirely around Shedinja in order to properly function, and they probably won't even after all that effort. Shedinja is not a Pokemon worth using at all. Even its supposed role of walling Huge Power doesn't even work as most Huge Power run Sacred Fire anyway and can easily remove Shedinja's Lum Berry.

tl;dr shedinja is too hard to use and shouldnt be ranked, opportunity cost too high

Emolga - UR -> C+ (Wonder Guard)
Forgot to mention this Pokemon. Anyway, it does the same thing as Zapdos.

Reshiram - UR -> B-

Reshiram @ Draco Plate
Ability: Turboblaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shell Smash
- Judgment
- Blue Flare / Fire Blast / Fusion Flare / V-Create
- Dark Void / Spore

Reshiram doesn't enjoy entry hazards, but that isn't the point here. Reshiram differentiates itself from Pokemon like Primal Groudon by not being weak to Water Shuriken, being incredibly easy to imposter-proof, has the ability to OHKO Giratina, something that Primal Groudon cannot do and still being of the same power level. It amazes me that nobody has even considered this Pokemon's existence for quite a long time.

Whilst it needs some assistance with keeping hazards off the field, ultimately it is still a decent special wallbreaker.

Hi! This is my first post on Smogon. I consider myself one of the top players of hackmons currently, and I'm here to talk about something that has caused quite a stir recently in the community: sample teams. More specifically, what I think a sample team should be and how it should function. I will then discuss one of my teams that was accepted as a sample and go through the teambuilding process for it.

What is a sample team supposed to do? There are a few ideas floating around about what a sample team should be, and most all of them boil down to a combination of the following:
A sample team should serve as a showcase to a format's metagame. What is popular, and ways to check that.
A sample team should be interesting and entice newcomers to start playing a format.
A sample team should serve as an introduction to teambuilding in that metagame and should teach newcomers how to do so in a relatively intuitive way.

Ideally, the best sample teams will strike a balance between these three, but I personally put more emphasis in the third aspect of teambuilding, and don't really care much about the first one. The team I will show you later will embody this idea, or at least it will try to. I personally think that sample teams should be interesting enough to entice newcomers and should try to teach them about teambuilding in that format. With this in mind, here is how I approached making my own sample team:

I wanted to make it good, but purposefully flawed. My intention is for newcomers to identify this flaw and figure out creative ways to try to patch up that flaw. In this case, I wanted the team to be weak to a relatively common moldy smash sweeper, while mostly covering everything else. The mon I chose to be weak to was Mega Gengar, because I planned on using imposter on the team, and thought that it could teach newcomers about why Gengar was so threatening: mainly being that it is not weak to imposter like almost all other mold sweepers. I didn't give much of a Gengar check, because I wanted the beginners who use the team to use their creativity to brainstorm a check to it, because that's what pure hackmons is all about!

So we have the goal in mind: make a team that is good, but is weak to Mega Gengar that simultaneously is intuitive to use, and has an "obvious" fix. Of course, it won't be obvious for newcomers, but still hopefully identifiable enough for them to be able to fix it. So without further ado, here is the team:

:xy/latios-mega: :xy/groudon-primal: :xy/rayquaza-mega: :xy/xerneas: :xy/scizor-mega: :xy/chansey:
The team focuses around protean Mega Latios, and Primal Groudon for offensive support. The gist of the team is for Latios to massacre everything that it can hit, and what Latios can't hit Primal Groudon and Mega Rayquaza can. Let's get into the details

:xy/latios-mega:

Latios-Mega (M) @ Soul Dew
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Grass Knot
- Freeze-Dry
- Aura Sphere
- Flash Cannon

Quite frankly, Latios is a menace. It OHKOs nearly everything that it can hit. Take a look:

252+ SpA Soul Dew Protean Latios-Mega Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Groudon-Primal: 412-486 (102.2 - 120.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Soul Dew Protean Latios-Mega Grass Knot (120 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Kyogre-Primal: 390-458 (96.7 - 113.6%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Soul Dew Protean Latios-Mega Flash Cannon vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Xerneas: 510-602 (112 - 132.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Soul Dew Protean Latios-Mega Aura Sphere vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slaking: 710-836 (140.8 - 165.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Soul Dew Protean Latios-Mega Aura Sphere vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Arceus: 432-510 (97.5 - 115.1%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

Latios has a fantastic match-up against the current meta. Xern-Ogre cores in combination with Primal Groudon are in abundance, and Latios obliterates them with ease. In addition to this, it simply shreds through bulkier teams that have a hard time outspeeding Latios. Most of the time, if you get Latios in you can just click buttons and end up making progress somehow. I chose Freeze-Dry over Moonblast on Latios because while still 2HKOing Giratina, it also hits Gyarados and niche Wonder Guard picks like Lando-T and Ludicolo. However Freeze-Dry, Moonblast, and Searing Shot can all work. Just note that if you choose to use Searing Shot you are susceptible to imposter, because Scizor is no longer immune to you.

:xy/groudon-primal:
Groudon-Primal @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- V-create
- Thousand Arrows
- Trick
- Spikes

The main things that Latios can't hit are steel types and electric types. Groudon covers both of these with its moves of V-Create and Thousand Arrows. With Shadow Tag, it's able to trap them and eliminate them, clearing the way for Latios to sweep. It runs Trick to just generally be annoying against teams with Wonder Guard + Shed Shell. The opponent will likely switch out if they have Shed Shell, and you can give whatever comes in a choice scarf, something they probably won't like. It's worth noting that V-Create OHKOs Mega Mewtwo X:

252 Atk Mold Breaker Groudon-Primal V-create vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mewtwo-Mega-X: 376-444 (106.5 - 125.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Finally, it has Spikes to support the next member of the team

:xy/rayquaza-mega:
Rayquaza-Mega @ Choice Band
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Ascent
- Precipice Blades
- Trick
- U-turn

Look, we all know how nutty Mega-Rayquaza is. Choice Band Dragon Ascent coming off of 180 base attack is just absurd. It deals absurd amounts of damage to everything that dares try to switch into it. The best real switch-in would be physically defensive Giratina:

252+ Atk Choice Band Mold Breaker Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 262-309 (52 - 61.4%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

But even that would need either prankster Will-O-Wisp or prankster recovery to effectively continue to live hits. With Spikes support from Primal Groudon, it becomes nearly impossible to live hits from this thing. It runs Precipice Blades to kill Steel Types looking to try to switch in on a Dragon Ascent. It comes with the added benefit of hitting opposing Primal Groudon for crazy amounts of damage, even being a roll to OHKO even the bulkiest of Groudon sets:

252+ Atk Choice Band Mold Breaker Rayquaza-Mega Precipice Blades vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Groudon-Primal: 366-432 (91.2 - 107.7%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

It's guaranteed after only 1 layer of Spikes. Ray also runs U-Turn for pivoting and gaining momentum. In addition to this, it runs Trick so it can lock something into one move. This won't be used very often, as you love your own choice band, but it come in handy against things like King's Shield Cresselia.

:xy/xerneas:
Xerneas @ Leftovers
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 184 SpA / 76 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
- Moonblast
- Shell Smash

Xerneas is only here to provide the rest of the team with substitutes to be safer. The thing is, the rest of the team doesn't really need substitutes. Although it would help in some instances, overall this team prefers other supportive options. Xerneas was chosen to be the "weak link" of the team, that new players were supposed to recognize doesn't do much for the team. The intended solution is to replace Xerneas with a different Pokémon that both checks Gengar and provides more support for the rest of the team. Although this isn't the only solution to the Gengar problem, it is the one I intend for newcomers to use, just as an introduction to how teambuilding in the format works. However, it's worth noting that instead of trying to find a new solution, they simply give up and say "this sample is bad. I'm not going to use it" in which case it would backfire tremendously. But hopefully that doesn't happen haha...

:xy/scizor-mega:
Scizor-Mega @ Shed Shell
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Recover
- Baton Pass
- Whirlwind
- Defog

Scizor is here to provide support and improof Latios. The role of Recover is obvious, and Baton Pass is used for pivoting. Whirlwind is mostly to phase out opposing Xerneas and subpassers, and Defog it to get rip of hazards that Ray doesn't like. Overall, pretty straightforward.

:xy/chansey:
Chansey (F) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Imposter
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Roar
- Sticky Web
- Lunar Dance
- Toxic Spikes

Chansey is the go-to imposter mon. It is a very good check to King's Shield Primal Groudon, as they are afraid to set up in fear that they will get reverse swept. It also just forces out opposing molds and allows you to scout sets to better let you play around prediction. The only time when Chansey will not transform is when the opponent is behind a substitute, or they are transformed themselves. If they are behind a substitute, then Roar will force them out. If they are transformed themselves, then things like Sticky Web and Toxic Spikes can be used to be a general annoyance to the opponent's team. Lunar Dance is to completely heal a teammate at the cost of Chansey's life, but can be very useful in dire circumstances where you need one of your Pokémon at full health to tank a move. Overall, Imposter is just a really good ability.

So that's the team. It's a matchup-machine with Latios and STAG, but Rayquaza definitely helps just eliminated things, so it's still very possible to win even with bad mu. What I'm most concerned about with this team is it teaching newcomers about teambuilding. I put a lot of thought into how I would design this team for beginners, but I'm worried that they won't know how to fix the flaw that I've put in here, or they will just give up on the team because of the flaw. I'm not sure, because it's so new and I haven't seen anyone use it yet. If you have any other better ideas to teach newcomers about teambuilding via sample teams, let me know. I'd be very interested to hear it. Here is a paste if you want to use the team yourself:
Protean Lati + STAG Pdon Offense (pokepast.es)

And shout outs to Mbouchon for helping me figure out how to format this!

The Weirdest Mega Rayquaza You Will Ever See

I made this set for Daylight when I was helping them with their Gardevoir Spam team, and it turned out to be surprisingly effective, so I feel inclined to post it here an explain what it does.

:xy/rayquaza-mega:
?!?! (Rayquaza-Mega) @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Aerilate
EVs: 144 HP / 88 Atk / 248 Def / 28 SpA
Rash Nature
- Fake Out
- Extreme Speed
- Boomburst
- Roost

The first thing you probably notice about this is the wacky EV spread, and then you probably see FakeSpeed in combination with Roost and wonder what the heck is going on, and why this was effective at all. This set was made as a check to Primal Groudon, when Mega Abomasnow couldn't be used. Since Daylight was using Gardevoir Spam, they didn't want to use Mega Abomasnow as a check, because it had too many overlapping weaknesses. So I came up with this. It is never 2HKOd by non-choice band Primal Groudon Thousand Arrows, and can OHKO back with Boomburst. Alternatively, it could predict the switch and use Roost to heal the HP and come in on Primal Groudon again. It turns out, it also lives a Choice Banded Mega Rayquaza Dragon Ascent, which is something I didn't expect, but makes sense when I think about it. Anyway, here are some calcs and replays of it being effective.

252+ Atk Mold Breaker Groudon-Primal Thousand Arrows vs. 144 HP / 248 Def Rayquaza-Mega: 163-193 (42.1 - 49.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
28+ SpA Aerilate Rayquaza-Mega Boomburst vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Groudon-Primal: 400-472 (99.7 - 117.7%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Rayquaza-Mega Dragon Ascent vs. 144 HP / 248 Def Rayquaza-Mega: 327-385 (84.4 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
88 Atk Aerilate Rayquaza-Mega Fake Out vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Latios-Mega: 100-118 (33.2 - 39.2%) -- 99.8% chance to 3HKO
88 Atk Aerilate Rayquaza-Mega Fake Out vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar-Mega: 120-142 (45.8 - 54.1%) -- 53.1% chance to 2HKO
88 Atk Aerilate Rayquaza-Mega Fake Out vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mewtwo-Mega-Y: 133-157 (37.6 - 44.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

So not only does this thing absorb hits from things like banded Mega Rayquaza, it also makes for an effective FakeSpeeder. The 88 Atk EVs conveniently happens to be the perfect amount do deal good damage and kill things with the Fake Out + Extreme Speed combo, as evidenced by the calcs above. Here are some of the replays (kindly provided by Daylight):

https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen6purehackmons-1580488229-f0palcx94cgog63psuyua4gfqch2e4npw
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen6purehackmons-1580549250-cqnkcam97fpavk223qjhovsr2ksb0otpw
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen6purehackmons-1580171864-4gvy6s3sukn89m58ns6ig39apf40or4pw
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen6purehackmons-1580440542-84pot0a8obpnby7bv2c6rpizasoo0q7pw

It's probably outclassed by Abomasnow, but it's still cool. It lives banded Ray and can rkill back, or roost again, which is neat.

I might make another post expanding on the ideas about sample teams I discussed in the previous post, but idk.

ORAS Hackmons Wonder Guard Setpedia

Welcome to the ORAS Hackmons Wonder Guard Setpedia. Sets that are considered viable on each Pokemon are listed. As I haven't consulted anyone when adding or editing listed sets, feel free to request set additions/removals. "Other Options" was a side project that I abandoned a while ago that aimed to list viable Pokemon's commonly run EV spreads, and because I didn't want the work I put into it to go to waste I left what progress I made in the setpedia.

The (regular) ORAS Hackmons Setpedia is accessible here.

Note that EV spreads are max max (optimal EV spreads are not listed directly on the sets) due to the metagame not being developed enough. Sets are ordered from most to least viable.

Hello!

I would like to nominate Parental Bond for B+ or A- rank in the ORAS ability viability rankings.

Currently, Protean is considered the closest one can get to a special equivalent to Huge Power and it’s utilized very similarly. Mega Latios, the most notable Protean user, uses the added power it gets from STAB to fire off a broad variety of coverage moves generally aimed at breaking common WG cores.

In generation six, Parental Bond provides an equivalent power boost to Protean (1.5x). And while using it means you lose out on the defensive advantages of changing your type (such as becoming a Steel type with flash cannon to resist AteSpeed users), the tradeoff is actually pretty good. You break both substitutes and sashes and have a greatly increased chance to proc the secondary effects of some powerful moves. For example, take a look at this game. Seed Flare’s special defense drop mattered multiple times, making the move much more spammable (even while choice locked) and allowing Gardevoir to 2HKO Gengar at a particularly pivotal moment in the game (skip to turn 22 if you want). Other moves that take advantage of this include powerful picks like Searing Shot, Moonblast, Sludge Bomb, and Dark Pulse—to name just a few. Even otherwise weak moves could have potential on the right mon—like, say, Luster Purge on MMY.

Another benefit of Parental Bond over Protean is to mons with particularly good or spammable stab moves—like Moonblast. Mega Gardevoir is a good example of a mon that would rather have Parental Bond over Protean—as it’s too frail to take advantage of the defensive utility of changing its type and having both STAB and the Parental Bond Boost on Moonblast is quite significant, making it capable of such feats as cleanly OHKO-ing Giratina. And while I haven’t personally used them yet, I expect mons like Mega Diancie, Mega Gengar, and MMY to be able to utilize Parental Bond well too.

All that to say, I think Parental Bond is an underexplored ability with a lot more utility than its current D ranking reflects. Given their equivalent damage output (and, in some cases, Parental Bond’s superior damage output), it seems to me that Parental Bond is more of a sidegrade to Protean than it is a downgrade. As such, I think Parental Bond deserves either a B+ or A- ranking to reflect that.

252+ SpA Parental Bond Gardevoir-Mega Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Giratina: 518-614 (102.9 - 122%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Parental Bond Diancie-Mega Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Giratina: 506-596 (100.5 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Parental Bond Gengar-Mega Sludge Bomb vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Xerneas: 550-650 (120.8 - 142.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Spooky Plate Parental Bond Gengar-Mega Judgment vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Giratina: 612-722 (121.6 - 143.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Parental Bond Diancie-Mega Moonblast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Giratina: 506-596 (100.5 - 118.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

I actually think Parental Bond could be worth moving even higher, to A - as noted in your post the increased chance of triggering a move's secondary effect (or allowing for said effect to be triggered twice) is a quality that puts it at an advantage over Protean in many instances. Additionally an attack with damage boosts from both STAB and Parental Bond would deal more damage than the same attack used by a Protean user, meaning Pokemon like Mega Sceptile and even Kyurem-White could benefit from Parental Bond more than they would from Protean; as a result in theory Parental Bond seems more splashable than Protean is. As in ORAS Hackmons there's an EV limit there's no need to resort to Huge/Pure Power to dish out enough damage to KO most Pokemon in one hit, so I think Parental Bond could be used viably on physical Pokemon, like MMX, Primal Groudon, and even the likes of Zekrom and Mega Diancie as well. Overall I think I severely underestimated Parental Bond's impact on the metagame when creating the Ability VR and it seems a good enough competitor with Protean that a rise to the same rank is justifiable.

When you go into the damage calculator and type in a Pokemon, it gives common sets in various formats. I decided to make a ORAS PH extension to the damage calculator. So now instead of fiddling around with Primal Groudon and giving it 232 HP Evs and Thousand Arrows, you can just find it as "PH King's Shield." The same applies for a bunch of other Pokemon's sets. Here it is:

ORAS PH Damage Calc Extrension (pokepast.es)

However, if you are finding a mega pokemon (other than Rayquaza) in the calculator, it will not have its item, even if you imported it with an item. This is a bug, and I have reported it.

(Also I was working on this before Mbouchon updated the setpedia and was what inspired him to update it, so there may be some sets there that aren't in the extension. If there is anything else I should add, let me know.)

Wonder Guard VR Explanations:

:xy/gardevoir-mega:

Mega Gardevoir is only slightly worse than Xerneas at most of what it wants to achieve as a Wonder Guard due to its barely higher Speed and worse overall bulk. However, it does well - better than Xerneas - as a Shell Smash sweeper due to its noticeably higher Special Attack, allowing it to grab more KOs against common switch-ins like Primal Kyogre and Arceus. This advantage Gardevoir has over the best Wonder Guard in the metagame means it rises one whole letter rank to B+.

:xy/lucario-mega:

Wonder Guard Mega Lucario has been making headway lately, as despite its weakness to Fissure it's one of if not the best Wonder Guard Shell Smash sweepers in the metagame. This is thanks to good stats and a typing that prevents Lucario from getting revenged by any revenge-killer and allows it to Imposter-proof with Fist Plate Judgment without missing out on top-tier coverage. After a Shell Smash Lucario can OHKO opposing Primal Groudon with Judgment, something that few if any other offensive Imposter-proofed Wonder Guards can accomplish without compromising their coverage. Aside from Primal Groudon, boosted Lucario also threatens the vast majority of metagame Mold Breakers, with nothing being able to safely switch into optimal sets when healthy; only a few contenders like Xerneas and Mega Gardevoir can say the same. Finally, unlike Xerneas and Gardevoir Lucario doesn't have to worry about Plate Imposter users, as Fist Plate Imposters leave themselves vulnerable to opposing Mold Breaker Mega Gengar as well as potentially losing speed ties against boosted sweepers. Altogether Mega Lucario is a top-tier Wonder Guard Shell Smash sweeper and makes its debut on the Wonder Guard VR in B rank.

:xy/ditto: :xy/durant:

Ditto's horrible stats and complete reliance on Quick Powder means that it suffers from 4MSS as a Wonder Guard SubPasser, and Durant's niche of outspeeding Deoxys-S as well as some boosted Mold Breakers isn't as important as its previous placement at B rank suggested. Both Wonder Guards drop from B to B- rank.

:xy/slowbro-mega:

Wonder Guard Mega Slowbro may sound like an extremely solid Primal Groudon check on paper, but in practice Groudon can just power through it by setting up thanks to free turns from Dark Void. Its overreliance on Safety Goggles to check Spore variants, as well as its abysmal typing outside of checking Groudon, don't help either, easily making Slowbro victim to the likes of Pursuit Dark-types and special Shadow Tag users. Slowbro's only niche being being a Groudon check (and doing so only shakily) and being absolutely terrible otherwise means it drops from C+ to C rank.

:xy/lopunny-mega:

Mega Lopunny, unlike Ditto, has an item slot and a Stealth Rock resistance that gives it more longevity as a SubPass user; these traits come at the cost of a Fairy-type weakness and getting outsped by MMY and Mega Beedrill. Lopunny doesn't seem much worse than Ditto if at all and so it rises slightly to C rank.

:xy/aggron-mega: :xy/registeel:

Mega Aggron and Registeel are both pure Steel-types, leaving them usable as Wonder Guards. Aggron's bulk lets it force 50-50s against Choice Band Mega Rayquaza while also checking Mega Tyranitar; Registeel checks Mold Breaker Mega Diancie and Mega Latios lacking Fire-type coverage. Aggron starts off in C, while Registeel makes its debut at C- rank.

:xy/cobalion:

Cobalion is a great Mega Tyranitar check, and isn't completely passive as it can break SubPass Xerneas' Substitutes while it tries to set up as well as Defog on it easily. Despite its obvious weak points in being weak to Ground and Fighting, Cobalion accomplishes what it wants to and the council felt that C rank was an appropriate placement for it.

:xy/galvantula:

Galvantula differentiates itself from Mega Beedrill and Durant by being immune to a progressively prevalent move in Glare, and doesn't actually miss out on outspeeding that many Pokemon. It's unique and effective enough at being a fast pivot, Defogger, and cleric, that it finds itself in C rank.

:xy/diancie:

Diancite Diancie starts off with a mediocre typing for a Wonder Guard, but can gain a useful Ability in Magic Bounce after Mega Evolving. While it's mostly overshadowed by the already fringe Sablenite Sableye, Wonder Guard Diancie is just relevant enough that it rises from the unranked pool to D rank.

:xy/reshiram:

Wonder Guard Reshiram has a typing that lets it wall all Huge Powers lacking Thousand Arrows (and the extremely fringe Diamond Storm), and has good stats that prevent most Mold Breakers from coming in. Reshiram's positive traits leave it viable enough to be in D rank.

:xy/armaldo: :xy/crustle:

Armaldo and Crustle suffer from being outclassed by an already mediocre Wonder Guard in Shuckle already, and virtually any other Wonder Guard Shell Smash sweeper offensively. KOing random extremely frail Pokemon with Diamond Storm, Attack Order, or Fell Stinger isn't anywhere near enough to justify running Armaldo or Crustle over Shuckle in any instance whatsoever. These two Wonder Guards are removed from the VR.

:xy/electrode:

There is no reason to use this over Mega Manectric.

Regular VR Explanations:

:xy/arceus: :xy/slaking: :xy/regigigas: :xy/gyarados-mega:

Arceus hasn't really gotten worse, it's just been overrated for quite some time now. Outside of having a fairly good Mold Breaker set it's really not that useful and faces heavy competition from other Pokemon in general. While Mold Breaker Arceus is good it and the spam factor weren't quite valuable enough to justify it being as high as it was, so it's dropped slightly to the middle of A rank. Slaking, Regigigas, and Mega Gyarados have risen to compensate for this.

:xy/kyogre-primal: :xy/lugia: :xy/yveltal: :xy/xerneas: :xy/tyranitar-mega:

The A- and B+ ranks have been reorganized because the previous iterations of these subranks had frankly been inaccurate. Primal Kyogre's offensive prowess was overrated, as while on paper STAB Steam Eruption and Water Spout off of 180 Special Attack allows it to wreak havoc in practice it's too easy to wear down and is prone to revenge-killing; other sets like Poison Heal and Magic Bounce are also quite niche. Lugia's sets, aside from a fairly good one in Shadow Tag, are fringe viability at best. While Yveltal seems versatile and very high tier on paper, all of its sets are either mediocre (Magic Bounce, Prankster, Regenerator, Mold Breaker), outclassed (Huge Power), or both (Poison Heal). Kyogre and Lugia drop to B+ rank and Yveltal to the bottom of A- rank; Xerneas and Tyranitar rise to compensate for this.

:xy/abomasnow-mega:

Mega Abomasnow is a legitimately good alternative to Kyurem-B as a Refrigerate user, because of its Spore immunity and resistance to Ground letting it switch into King's Shield Primal Groudon much more easily. Additionally, its extremely slow Speed tier means it can use Boomburst or Parting Shot after most opposing Wonder Guards pivot, meaning as an -ate user Abomasnow is less of a momentum sink. While having only 132 base Attack does hurt in an EV-limited metagame it's usually still enough to force out boosted threats, and Abomasnow actually boasts a stronger Boomburst than Kyurem-B, always OHKOing healthy Giratina with Icicle Plate Boomburst uninvested - Kyurem-B cannot do this without investment. Mega Abomasnow is not far off from the likes of Kyurem-B, Mega Rayquaza, and Mega Diancie as an -ate user, and the council felt a huge jump from C+ to A- rank was appropriate.

:xy/ho-oh: :xy/registeel:

Ho-Oh's far too easily Pursuit trapped and has to choose between losing to physical Shadow Tag users or Mold Breaker Mega Gengar; it's also forced out by virtually any physical attacker. Aside from denying SubPass Xerneas hazards or paralysis spreading Registeel is quite mediocre, as while it's less vulnerable to Pursuit it's also a massive momentum sink and even more passive than Ho-Oh. Both Pokemon drop to B rank.

:xy/sceptile-mega: :xy/latias-mega: :xy/kyurem-white:

These three Dragon-types are all outclassed by Mega Latios. Mega Sceptile lacks the sheer power that Latios has, and its horrible bulk means that after a Shell Smash opposing Imposter forces it out even when running a Judgment set. Mega Latias just doesn't hit as hard as Latios, and while it might not be much less effective in practice there just isn't much of a reason to run it over its brother. Kyurem-W is slower, weak to Stealth Rock, and can't switch moves with a Choice Specs set. Sceptile drops to B, Latias drops to B-, and Kyurem drops to C+ rank.

:xy/metagross-mega:

Mega Metagross doesn't do anything notable over its main competitors in Primal Groudon, MMX, and Mega Tyranitar - it's basically forced into running Taunt as disruption on Mold Breaker sets. Extremely fringe Choice Band Mold Breaker and Huge Power sets might exist but they don't make Metagross good enough for B- rank. Metagross drops to C+.

:xy/gardevoir-mega:

Mega Gardevoir has a decent niche as a Choice Specs Mold Breaker over Mega Diancie due to getting STAB on Psycho Boost and Psystrike, while still outspeeding the vast majority of defensive Pokemon in the metagame. Shell Smash Gardevoir, while vulnerable to Shadow Tag, Imposter, and revenge-killing by Pursuit users, can also put in good work in a fair amount of games. Mega Gardevoir rises to C rank.

:xy/zekrom:

Mold Breaker Zekrom has a near unresisted STAB in Bolt Strike which OHKOes most Pokemon that can do something back to it when boosted; what Bolt Strike doesn't hit, in particular Giratina and Primal Groudon, dislikes taking a boosted Draco Meteor hit, giving Zekrom virtually perfect coverage. Of course, relying on Electric-type STAB and Draco Meteor leaves Zekrom with issues when trying to sweep, but being able to set up multiple times in a battle means this doesn't matter as much. Zekrom makes its debut on the VR in C rank.

:xy/deoxys-speed: :xy/alakazam-mega:

Deoxys-Speed and Mega Alakazam are virtually always outclassed by Pokemon higher on the VR. Deoxys is basically completely outdone by Lugia or Mega Aerodactyl as a Perishtrapper, and other potential sets are virtually unviable; Alakazam's pretty much outdone by Deoxys-Attack or MMY because its Speed actually doesn't matter that much and doesn't allow its teammates to offensively pressure opposing Imposter users as easily as Deoxys-A would. Deoxys-S falls to C- rank and Alakazam falls to D rank.

:xy/giratina-origin:

While Giratina-O's niche as a support Mold Breaker threatening opposing Defoggers and clerics with Final Gambit is extremely specific, it nevertheless does the job better than anything else - it has the perks of being fully Imposter-proof with Spooky Plate Judgment and being able to spread status or set hazards with near impunity against most teams lacking Wonder Guard Dusclops or Mega Sableye. Giratina-O rises to C- rank.

:xy/chesnaught: :xy/tangrowth:

Chesnaught may seem an odd addition to the VR, but it's able to check the main physical Mold Breakers in the metagame in Primal Groudon, Mega Tyranitar, and Gyaradosite Gyarados at once. Tangrowth checks Primal Groudon nearly as hard as Leavanny does and has higher bulk than Chesnaught, letting it take Pursuits more easily. Chesnaught and Tangrowth rise to D rank.

:xy/gyarados:

Illusion Gyarados with Gyaradosite can set up a Shell Smash without too much difficulty and, unless the opponent consistently makes correct reads, Gyarados always grabs a KO. Before Illusion is revealed and Gyarados KO's something opposing Imposter doesn't Transform into it as well. Gyarados rises to D.

:xy/altaria-mega: :xy/gourgeist-super: :xy/lopunny-mega:

Mega Altaria has saddening bulk for a defensive Pokemon and, as a Magic Bounce user, doesn't have the typing to deny hazards from most common setters in the metagame; Prankster sets check only Dialga and Mega Latios with Dragon-type STAB and Fire-type coverage, and are virtually useless in any other matchup. Gourgeist should've been removed a while ago, as it has no real opportunities to take advantage of Curse and its Ghost typing makes it vulnerable to Pursuit trapping. Mega Lopunny's completely outdone by Slaking and Regigigas as a Huge Power priority user and MMY as a Huge Power that outspeeds MMX. All three Pokemon are removed from the VR.

Other Notable Mentions:

1654908784212.png

Random Imposters can easily affect the course of a game if they Transform into Mold Breakers that are particularly hard to Imposter-proof, like Primal Groudon, Mega Latios, or Mega Tyranitar. Pokemon with high base HP, like Slaking, Giratina, Xerneas, or rarer apparent Wonder Guards like Alomomola and Wobbuffet, work well as Random Imposters. They really do not seem worse than the likes of Chansey and Blissey by much if at all, so random Imposter users start off in S- rank.

:xy/aerodactyl-mega:

There was discussion on Mega Aerodactyl deserving a rise because the Pokemon around it were less viable. However, this VR update generally saw many of these Pokemon moving down, so the council felt Aerodactyl didn't need a rise at the moment.

:xy/shedinja:

Shedinja can actually run Abilities other than Sturdy, such as Pixilate, Mold Breaker, and even Illusion, to try to bring an opposing Pokemon down to 1 HP. Even though it does require quite some support to function, one can make it work with a Magic Bounce user that complements Prankster Giratina well, like Registeel or Mega Venusaur; we felt that Shedinja actually deserved a rise this VR update. However we thought that raising Shedinja would send the message that it's a splashable metagame force, so we decided to leave it in C- rank.

:xy/reshiram:

For a little bit the council thought that Reshiram could rise to D, as the bar for VR placement is comparatively low. However, the bar isn't low enough for Reshiram to have a place on it. Its only niche over Primal Groudon is not being revenge-killed by Mega Gyarados lacking Sucker Punch as much, and the only thing it does over Mega Latios is survive Pursuits from -ate users slightly better. Basically, Reshiram has no real reason to be used or put on the VR, so it was left unranked in this VR update.

Some underrated sets/techs that I've found to work well amid current metagame trends:

:xy/mewtwo-mega-x:

Mewtwo-Mega-X @ Choice Band
Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Drain Punch / Low Kick / Close Combat
- Precipice Blades / Thousand Arrows
- Bolt Strike / Power Whip / Fusion Bolt
- Gear Grind / Knock Off / Play Rough / Trick

This thing absolutely demolishes teams that rely on Leftovers + SubPass Xerneas as support for sweepers. Drain Punch is just so good for Mega Gyarados and Wonder Guard Slaking, the latter from which MMX heals a ton from even if it doesn't OHKO it. It can also KO and heal from Mega Abomasnow that MMX comes in on safely or with a predict. Low Kick and Close Combat OHKO all Slaking and Arceus variants but I personally don't like them as much because the longevity that Drain Punch grants MMX is just so valuable for its function. Precipice Blades OHKOes 240 HP Primal Groudon after Stealth Rock and 0 bulk Primal Groudon without prior chip, and is really nice for Wonder Guard Mega Manectric/Primal Groudon/Skuntank/Drapion/Mega Lucario that would otherwise support the opposing team in various ways. Thousand Arrows hits Air Balloon Wonder Guards, which is more valuable than you might think given most Shed Shell Wonder Guards weak to Precipice Blades/Thousand Arrows just switch out of MMX; it's also nice for ladder I guess, though even when laddering I prefer Precipice Blades. Bolt Strike and Power Whip threaten Primal Kyogre, and I think Bolt Strike works better since Wonder Guard Gyarados and Toxic Orb Ho-Oh are reliably trapped. You could also go for Fusion Bolt if you wanted to, though Bolt Strike seems more straightforward to use even with the miss chance. Gear Grind OHKOes opposing Wonder Guard Xerneas and Trick cripples an opposing Wonder Guard/defensive Pokemon, though you have to be careful against teams running Primal Groudon or some other physical Mold Breaker with near-perfect coverage. Knock Off and Play Rough hits Mega Latios and to an extent Magic Bounce Giratina; Knock Off also hits Wonder Guard Cresselia, Dusclops, and the occasional Meloetta, while Play Rough hits Mega Rayquaza, Yveltal, and Wonder Guard Mega Sableye. EVs let MMX outspeed Adamant/Modest Mega Rayquaza while investing in bulk for hits from threats it likes to come in on, like Sucker Punch from Lum Berry Mega Gyarados, Moonblast from Xerneas, and Fake Out + Extreme Speed from Mega Abomasnow.

:xy/groudon-primal:

Groudon-Primal @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spore / Dark Void
- Shell Smash
- Thousand Arrows
- U-turn

This is standard Primal Groudon but with a twist. This set takes advantage of Primal Groudon's offensive prowess, as well as having a virtually perfect coverage move in Thousand Arrows and therefore three free moveslots, to run pivoting in U-Turn. I think Spore's better on this set since you're going to be pairing it with a Pursuit trapper like Mega Gyarados, which traps most Giratina and likely paves the way for Primal Groudon to sweep (though as always Dark Void is still cracked). It also heavily chips opposing Mega Gyarados which like to come in on Primal Groudon which is nice. One of my greatest issues with Primal Groudon is that it doesn't fare well in the momentum game if the opponent brings the correct counterplay for it, and making use of pivoting on it solves this issue. You can run a faster spread but if anything I think Primal Groudon benefits from being bulky even more than usual as now it's using its bulk (and relative lack of speed) to safely pivot into a teammate. Oh, and sets like Volt Switch Mega Diancie and Dialga don't work as well because you have to forgo sleep/protection in King's Shield/additional longevity in Recover/team support in Stealth Rock which really sucks; Primal Groudon's uniquely suited to this role because of its ability to threaten the entire metagame with one attack.

252+ Atk Groudon-Primal U-turn vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Gyarados-Mega: 200-236 (50.7 - 59.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Huge Power Tyranitar-Mega switching boosted Pursuit (80 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Giratina: 434-512 (86.2 - 101.7%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

:xy/dialga:

Dialga @ Draco Plate / Iron Plate

Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Recover
- Shell Smash
- Judgment / Spacial Rend
- Flash Cannon / Judgment / Searing Shot

I think Dialga in particular benefits from the giant uptick on Mega Gyarados usage due to its good bulk, resistance to Water Shuriken, and ability to force out what I view as the big 4 of the metagame (Shell Smash Primal Groudon, Prankster Giratina, SubPass Xerneas, and Huge Power Mega Gyarados) after a Shell Smash, as well as two of them when unboosted. Shell Smash, Judgment/Spacial Rend, and Flash Cannon/Steel-type Judgment/Searing Shot are great options and contribute to Dialga's status as a fairly prominent Mold Breaker user as of late, but I want to focus on Recover. berry said a couple weeks ago that they find the general shift among Mold Breakers from ripping opposing teams apart as quickly as possible to them attempting to withstand powerful attacks from revenge killers remarkable, and I very much agree. From my point of view, Dialga's great defensive and offensive typing for the metagame leaves it uniquely suited to dealing with metagame teams that try and pack counterplay for as much of the offensive metagame as possible. Watch out for Sucker Punch Mega Gyarados though, that set's slept on.

This game shows how Dialga's defensive utility against popular metagame picks, like Wonder Guard Primal Kyogre and Shadow Tag Regigigas, allows it to run move options that further increase its defensive presence, like Recover, while still being a potent offensive threat.

I know Mega Abomasnow's not exactly a novel pick anymore but it benefits from the current metagame and I wanted to talk about it. In most Pure Hackmons getting the upper hand in the momentum game's integral to players' ability to make progress, and Mega Abomasnow is a prime example of that. At first glance it might seem almost strictly inferior to Kyurem-B as a Refrigerate revenge killer but that doesn't reveal the entire picture. Two important features that differentiate Mega Abomasnow from Kyurem-B are an immunity to Spore, a resistance to Thousand Arrows, and an extremely low Speed stat; the first two attributes let it come in on King's Shield Primal Groudon running Spore more easily, while its slow Speed lets Mega Abomasnow effectively retain momentum in what would otherwise be a predetermined sequence in the game. Parting Shot, while admittedly a 50-50 move due to the Mega Abomasnow user taking the inherent risk of using the move the turn an opposing sweeper is forced out, works exceptionally well because of how easily everything forces switches in Pure Hackmons due to its extremely high power level.

Oh, and Spore is also really cool on -ate users because you gain free turns from putting opposing switch-ins, namely Wonder Guard users, to sleep. Almost none of them can run Safety Goggles without facing the inherent risks of forgoing Shed Shell or Leftovers which really benefits Spore -ates. Mega Abomasnow might actually be the best user due to how opposing Magic Bounce users can't put it to sleep on a predict. I've also tried Spore on Mega Gyarados and it's worked very well. In this game I was able to annoy opposing Wonder Guard Xerneas by putting it to sleep, then put Giratina to sleep, then Xerneas gets slept again and eventually Primal Groudon gets slept when it uses King's Shield and I get a free Pursuit off. In another game Spore doesn't accomplish as much due to the opponent running Safety Goggles Primal Kyogre and Giratina as well as fast SubPass Xerneas, but I can still use the move on a predict nonetheless. Sleep is busted.

Ability: Shadow Tag
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Def
Adamant Nature

- Perish Song /
Spikes

This is an interesting tech that takes advantage of Regigigas' (or Slaking's) bulk and speed tier, which would otherwise go unnoticed. I like Regigigas better because you come in on Moonblasts from Wonder Guard Xerneas more easily. Regigigas gains additional utility by making use of Encore, trapping opposing Wonder Guard Xerneas and random Wonder Guard non-Ghost types forgoing Shed Shell, like some Primal Kyogre and Mega Scizor. It can also lock chipped sweepers using King's Shield into the move for three turns. Perish Song takes advantage of Encore to safety trap opposing foes (provided you come in on a passive move that's not pivoting). Opposing Mold Breakers locked into King's Shield are locked into the move for three turns AFTER use, meaning they're sitting ducks until the perish count reaches 1 and you switch into a Giratina or something that stomachs the hit. Spikes is also really nice since Encore generates free turns that can be take full advantage of. It's also worth noting that even if you forgo Perish Song Encore still has great utility against Wonder Guards, especially SubPass Wonder Guards like Xerneas and Mega Swampert, since you can remove all their Substitute PP if you can switch in on them using the move. Leftovers provides longevity which really helps Regigigas come in on Wonder Guards and Mold Breakers alike - it does really want Silk Scarf for rolls against Primal Groudon, MMX, MMY, Mega Latios, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Rayquaza though. Oh, and Taunt Regigigas is horrible, whoever is using that, stop.

Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Baton Pass
- Encore
- Curse
- Recover

This is more a minor tech but I think it's noteworthy because it adequately prepares for the Primal Groudon + Huge Power Mega Gyarados cores that are so popular nowadays. Prankster Giratina really only needs three moves to act as a blanket check against Mold Breaker Shell Smash sweepers - Encore forces them out, Curse chips Wonder Guard switch-ins as well as Pursuit trappers and offensive Mold Breaker users that force Giratina out, and Recover is reliable recovery. Baton Pass lets Giratina escape Pursuit while also allowing it to retain momentum against teams that like to switch into SubPass Xerneas or some other Wonder Guard that forces Giratina out. Using up a moveslot does make Giratina more vulnerable against Choiced Mold Breakers though - Leftovers somewhat mitigates this issue but it's still tough. Huge Power users also give this Giratina a hard time. Not as universally applicable as say Will-O-Wisp, Destiny Bond, or Glare, but Baton Pass is a cool alternative that works well in the current metagame.

I would write about Protean Mega Latios but everyone knows what it does already. I wrote this a while ago but the part about Mega Latios should still be mostly accurate. I would also note that Latios can run slower spreads that take advantage of its Soul Dew-boosted special bulk, however.

That's all I have for now!

Wonder Guard VR Explanations:

:xy/swampert-mega: :xy/groudon-primal:

Mega Swampert just has issues that hamper its function too much - it's 4x weak to Freeze-Dry (and Grass Knot) and lacks the bulk to take on any Mold Breaker users if slightly chipped. In other words, Primal Kyogre is often just straight-up better. Substitute + Baton Pass sets are decent but defensive sets are terrible and shouldn't really be used. Primal Groudon isn't really outclassed by anything and has a good typing for common Protean Mega Latios move combinations; its weakness to Fissure does suck but Primal Groudon has redeeming qualities in being very physically bulky and having two incredible STAB moves in Thousand Arrows and Sacred Fire. Mega Swampert and Primal Groudon swap places on the VR.

:xy/dusclops:

Dusclops faces stiff competition from Cresselia as a defensive Wonder Guard due to the latter outspeeding Huge Power Mega Gyarados and being slightly less vulnerable to Knock Off; Dusclops offers a resistance to U-Turn and an extremely slow Speed stat. Dusclops' niches are large enough that it's not going to drop further, but we felt a drop to B+ rank was appropriate.

:xy/banette-mega: :xy/snorlax: :xy/regigigas:

Mega Banette, Snorlax, and Regigigas are basically never worth using. Banette suffers from a chronic lack of physical Ghost-type moves, Snorlax has a good speed stat for slow pivoting but is generally eclipsed by Arceus or Blissey, and Regigigas only seems useful for extremely situational calcs against random special Mold Breaker users and its extra power compared to Arceus or Snorlax. All three drop to C- rank.

:xy/rayquaza-mega:

Wonder Guard Mega Rayquaza may seem odd, and it quite honestly is, but it has the typing and surprise factor to succeed as an extremely niche offensive Wonder Guard user. Apart from the weakness to Sheer Cold that severely hampers Mega Rayquaza, it's only really weak to Fairy-type attacks, moves affected by Refrigerate, and Freeze-Dry, of which not many users of these moves can switch in. Mega Rayquaza starts off in D rank.

:xy/alakazam-mega:

Just use Deoxys-A.

Regular VR Explanations:

:xy/rayquaza-mega: :xy/latios-mega: :xy/diancie-mega: :xy/gengar-mega:

The entire A+ rank has been reorganized.

Mega Rayquaza performs well in a wide range of offensive roles. Choice Band Mold Breaker has next to no switch-ins (and can tech for the only actual switch-in in Prankster Will-O-Wisp Giratina). Choice Specs Mold Breaker devastates now-popular slower teams and fits very well in the ubiquitous "big 4" team structure of Primal Groudon, Prankster Giratina, SubPass Xerneas, and Huge Power Mega Gyarados. Aerilate is also a very solid revenge killing option that functions nearly as well as Refrigerate users, or even Mega Gyarados itself. Mega Rayquaza's versatility, ability to fit on a wide range of team archetypes, like bulky offense, hyper offense, and even spam, as well as its mastery of the numerous offensive roles that it can provide for teams, justifies a rise.

Mega Latios has been a fantastic breaker recently, with unparalleled power as a special sweeper; while Mold Breaker sets have been doing fairly well for themselves, Protean sets are horrendously powerful and are very difficult to adequately address in the builder. Protean Mega Latios has some honestly comical calcs, like always OHKOing opposing Giratina with Moonblast, something even Huge Power Mega Mewtwo X fails to consistently achieve, and usually OHKO even sturdy specially defensive Pokemon, like Wonder Guard Primal Kyogre, with coverage that threatens them. Additionally, Protean Mega Latios has notable defensive utility in being able to change type, allowing it to withstand attacks opposing -ate users, as well as Shadow Tag Slaking and Regigigas, after KOing something with Flash Cannon, survive a Sucker Punch from Huge Power Mega Gyarados after obliterating a foe with Moonblast, or even rid itself of its vulnerability to Shadow Tag with Shadow Ball. Mold Breaker Mega Latios is also incredibly powerful and preys on the slow teams that have been the face of the metagame as of late. Mega Latios rises to 2nd in A+ rank due to its status as an incredible offensive Pokemon; its one-dimensionality as a Protean and Mold Breaker user hold it back from rising any higher, however.

Mega Diancie mostly drops because the above two Pokemon are so prevalent in the current metagame; it hasn't gotten worse by much. However, Pixilate sets have become progressively harder to fit on teams that don't also run Imposter Chansey, and are hard to justify on teams running Huge Power Mega Gyarados. Mold Breaker Mega Diancie is still very threatening, but is held back by its low overall bulk, weakness to Mega Gyarados' Water Shuriken, and vulnerability to opposing offensive Shadow Tag users if unboosted. Mega Diancie drops to 3rd in A+ rank.

Mega Gengar has fared worse than the other Pokemon that inhabit A+ rank due to its utter lack of defensive utility, as well as its one-dimensionality in being a Mold Breaker user. It also really wants to have five moves, to have virtually perfect coverage in Spooky Plate Judgment, Secret Sword, and Sludge Wave, while also running disruption in Spore and boosting in Shell Smash, and having only four moveslots to work with hampers its coverage or ability to set up. Mega Gengar drops to the bottom of A+ rank.

:xy/gyarados-mega: :xy/slaking: :xy/regigigas:

Mega Gyarados has established time and time again that it's the best standalone revenge killing option in the game. With Huge Power-boosted STAB options in Knock Off, Pursuit, and Sucker Punch, it's more than capable of threatening the majority of offensive threats, boosted and unboosted alike. It also has STAB Water Shuriken, which is incredibly valuable in a metagame that's warped by King's Shield Mold Breaker Primal Groudon. Mega Gyarados also requires little effort to cripple or remove what is widely regarded as the best Pokemon in the game in Prankster Giratina. Slaking and Regigigas aren't bad options to revenge kill boosted threats either, and do have additional utility with Shadow Tag that give them unique merits in the metagame, but they just don't compare to Mega Gyarados. Mega Gyarados rises to the top of A, and Slaking and Regigigas slightly drop.

:xy/arceus: :xy/kyurem-black:

Arceus doesn't have a lot going for it - while it has a pretty nice Mold Breaker set that's untrickable and fully Imposter-proofed by a top Pokemon in Giratina, it faces competition from other special Mold Breaker users and has a notable lack of other sets that it can viably run. Kyurem-B's an excellent revenge killer that competes with other notable revenge killers, but can be justified on a wide variety of teams. Arceus drops to the bottom of A, and the only reason it doesn't fall lower is because it has some pretty sick applications on spam teams. Kyurem-B rises to compensate for this.

:xy/deoxys-attack: :xy/yveltal: :xy/xerneas: :xy/tyranitar-mega: :xy/abomasnow-mega:

Deoxys-A and Yveltal are just really underwhelming in the metagame. Deoxys-A is literal paper and dies to everything that gets a hit off on it; it can run a Focus Sash to remedy that issue, but that means it forgoes an otherwise useful item and it can still get KOed by the likes of Huge Power Mega Gyarados and Shadow Tag Slaking and Regigigas. Its only niches over the Mega Mewtwos are being so frail that opposing Imposter Chansey Transformed into Deoxys can get KOed by Silk Scarf Shadow Tag Slaking, its slightly better speed tier, and having better offensive stats for mixed sets. Yveltal's sets are mediocre at best, and many of its better sets face stiff competition from Pokemon higher on the VR, and as such instances where you would run Yveltal over anything else are rare. Both Pokemon drop to B+ rank, and Xerneas, Mega Tyranitar, and Mega Abomasnow rise slightly to compensate for this.

:xy/chansey: :xy/blissey:

Chansey's near impossible to justify on most teams, and Blissey's been way too high for way too long. Chansey seems good on paper but in practice it has trouble functioning as it should. It would be a good special wall if Mold Breaker Psystrike Mega Latios and MMY weren't prevalent threats, if Secret Sword Protean Mega Latios, MMY, and Mold Breaker Mega Gengar didn't exist, and if it weren't hampered by opposing Pursuit users so easily. Blissey's basically worse Chansey except it can run Shed Shell to prevent getting trapped by Shadow Tag users. Chansey drops to C+ rank, and Blissey drops all the way down to D.

:xy/shedinja:

Shedinja's actually a lot better than you might think (it's still a hell of a lot worse than randos on the ladder think though). While it does only work on really specific teams, it can run niche abilities in -ate or Mold Breaker in addition to Sturdy, taking advantage of 1 HP Endeavor to bring opposing Giratina in. Sturdy Shedinja walling Huge Power and Protean sets is also quite useful nowadays, when the likes of Protean Mega Latios and Huge Power MMX are even more threatening due to the prevalence of a specific Wonder Guard in Xerneas. Shedinja rises to C rank as a result.

:xy/chesnaught:

Chesnaught is unironically usable. Its ability to come in on all Primal Groudon variants, Mold Breaker Mega Tyranitar, and Wonder Guard Gyarados allow it to blanket check many of the metagame's physical Mold Breaker users. The only noteworthy ones that Chesnaught has to watch out for are Choice Band Mega Rayquaza and the occasional Mold Breaker MMX. Chesnaught rises to C- rank.

:xy/deoxys-speed:

Deoxys-S, contrary to Chesnaught, is a Pokemon that's just completely fallen off. Its only niche is as a fringe lead on hyper offense, and even then that means you sacrifice a team slot in a metagame where all 6 slots are extremely valuable. Deoxys drops to D.

:xy/alakazam-mega: :xy/audino-mega: :xy/beedrill-mega: :xy/cresselia: :xy/hoopa-unbound: :xy/swampert-mega:

We also removed much of the D rank, as you're never going to seriously use these Pokemon on teams (except maybe Swampert). Mega Alakazam is straight-up horrible and completely outclassed by either MMY or Deoxys-A depending on the team. Mega Audino doesn't really do anything considering Mold Breaker users it traditionally walls can run other options that break past it; it also can't really do anything back unless it runs random Flame Orb sets that are horrible against literally everything else. And I don't even know what Mega Beedrill does. Cresselia might not be that terrible in practice, but there's no reason to run it over the likes of Giratina, Ho-Oh, or Registeel depending on what you want it to do. Hoopa-U is only useful due to Hyperspace Fury ignoring King's Shield, and its laughably bad physical bulk more than negates that hypothetical advantage. Mega Swampert is just outclassed by Primal Groudon as a Choice Band Mold Breaker user, as it loses too much bulk for an extra option to force opposing Primal Groudon out. The VR is supposed to show what Pokemon and threats are realistically worth using or preparing for, and none of these Pokemon are remotely worth using on any serious team.

Hello! I just wanted to talk about a few mons I’ve been using that I think are really cool. ❤

1659124221536.gif

Tamlin / Lord of Spring (Xerneas) (M) @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Teravolt
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 180 HP / 252 SpA / 76 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shell Smash
- Judgment
- Spore
- King’s Shield

Mono-attacking Mold Breaker Xerneas is an idea I actually got from NToTheN. But it immediately made perfect sense to me. Fairy is arguably the best mono-attacking type after Ground (that is, Thousand Arrows). It has amazing neutral coverage, with the only major resistant threats being Primal Groudon and Mega Gengar (the latter of whom is OHKOed by +2 Judgment after Stealth Rock anyway). Primal Groudon’s metagame dominance makes Steel-, Poison-, and Fire-types that can actually tank a hit from +2 Xerneas’s Fairy Judgment uncommon at best—with Pokemon like Registeel and Ho-Oh currently sitting in the B rank on the VR. Additionally, unlike other Fairy-types such as Mega Diancie and Mega Gardevoir—Xerneas has the bulk to actually make use of King’s Shield. So, a mono-attacking Mold Breaker Xerneas has amazing neutral coverage, forces out the most common Prankster user, finds an abundance setup opportunities with Spore, and is resistant to revenge killing with King’s Shield. Furthermore, it’s also incredibly easy to Imposter-proof with Safety Goggles Prankster Giratina, who’s immune to both Spore and Imposter’s Plate-less Judgment. Mold Breaker Xerneas also has amazing synergy with another metagame titan, Huge Power Mega Gyarados, who can revenge kill and Pursuit trap almost every threat to Xerneas, including Primal Groudon, Mega Gengar, and Ho-Oh.

Overall, I think mono-attacking Mold Breaker Xerneas is actually a very powerful sweeper and wincon for bulky offense and balance teams. Not to mention I think it’s currently underexplored. Like Primal Groudon, since (with minimal team support) Xerneas only needs a single attack to be effective, it can theoretically make good use of options like Taunt, Volt Switch or U-turn, Stealth Rock, and Substitute. As a result, I would like to nominate Xerneas to A rank. (Above Arceus.) Here are a couple replays showcasing what a potent sweeper and wincon mono-Fairy Xerneas is…
Versus Te Quiero Maximo
Versus Acura RL

Fever Dream High (Manectric-Mega) (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Baton Pass
- Scald
- Gastro Acid

SubPass Mega Manectric isn’t a new set by any means, but it is extremely effective. The combination of Scald and Gastro Acid is fantastic. Thanks to its incredible Speed tier, Mega Manectric can force out most Mold Breakers lacking a Ground move. And thankfully, it’s usually very easy to tell which Mold Breakers carry a Ground move (aka Primal Groudon) and Scald OHKOes the most common one ~81% of the time (something otherwise comparable mons like Electrode cannot do). Again thanks to its blistering Speed, Mega Manectric can also scout coverage attackers like Protean Latios and MMX for Ground attacks with Substitute before pivoting out to the appropriate teammate. Additionally, Manectric’s immunity to paralysis means Prankster Giratina’s Glare can’t slow it down for Mold Breaker teammates. This combination of fantastic typing, Substitute, Gastro Acid, and Scald make Mega Manectric an extremely effective SubPasser. It definitely lives up to its A viability ranking. Take a look at these games to see what I mean…
Versus BahamutLagoon
Versus Mbouchon

Elysium (Florges-White) (M) @ Leftovers / Shed Shell
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 88 SpA / 172 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Moonblast
- Dark Void / Stealth Rock / Defog / Aromatherapy
- Substitute / Recover
- Baton Pass / Whirlwind

Finally, I’ve been (and still am!) experimenting with Florges for a couple weeks now. And I think it does have a legitimate, if small, niche. Excellent special bulk allows Florges to Imposter-proof sets like Choice Specs Mold Breaker Mega Rayquaza with Draco Meteor/Oblivion Wing/Volt Switch/Secret Sword and Mold Breaker Mega Latios with Psycho Boost/Spacial Rend/Secret Sword/Volt Switch, as well as Grass Knot + Spacial Rend Mega Sceptile sets. It can also, very notably, Imposter-proof Iron Plate Judgment Dialga sets. Additionally, Florges’s decent base 112 Special Attack as compared to Mega Audino allows it to do a decent SubPass Xerneas impression. It’s lower speed as compared to Xerneas is another boo , underspeeding opposing slow pivots like Xerneas, Primal Kyogre, and Cresselia. Practically speaking, Florges doesn’t really function all that differently from Xerneas—with its lower speed and somewhat better special bulk being its main selling points. The drop in Moonblast’s power as compared to Xerneas definitely sucks, but Moonblast’s targets—MMX, Mega Rayquaza, Giratina, etc.—are pretty prone to getting chipped down over the course of a game anyway. Is it better than Xerneas or Mega Audino? Definitely not. However, in my opinion, there are enough situations in which Florges is worth considering to warrant VR placement. Overall, these qualities are valuable enough that I think Florges is deserving of C+ or C rank. Take a look at these games to see it in action…

I always loved this Pokemon, an thought for a second that if other ghost types have worked as a WG why not Mismagius , most people have noticed that i´ve been using it, this Pokémon performs as a Wonder Guard with a Shadow Tag immunity while not beeing destroyed by Mega Gyarados and being a decent answer to most protean Pokemon.

1659135248718.png

Mismagius @ Leftovers
Ability: Wonder Guard
EVs: 248 HP / 44 SpD / 216 Spe or 224 HP / 68 SpA / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Baton Pass
- Substitute
- Toxic Spikes/ Any other hazard
- Gastro Acid/Taunt/Whirlwind/Shadow Ball/Hex...

Curiously enough this Pokemon isn´t in the WG VR which is why im nominating it, first let´s see the good things about Mismagius.

++It´s inmune to Shadow Tag by itself
+Blocks most Protean and Huge Power sets
+Can escape from Mega-Gyarados by using Batton Pass
+It´s Faster than Adamant Mega-Rayquaza (and everything slower) and can use Gastro Acid before beeing hit

However, Mismagius, like every Pokémon has it´s issues

--Fragile enough to the point where almost any hit will OHKO
-It´s faster than the most common SubPasser in Xerneas, losing momentum in some situations
-Heavily dislikes Taunt, status and Trick
-Even with Shadow Ball Giratina stops Mismagius (tho Hex 2HKO´s if statused, which makes a great combination with Toxic Spikes)
-Usually outclassed by Xerneas as a SubPasser (Thanks NToTHeN)
-Forced to run Baton Pass to not be destroyed by Mega Gyarados (Which isn´t that big of deal on SubPass sets)

252 SpA Mismagius Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Giratina: 194-230 (38.4 - 45.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
68 SpA Mismagius Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Giratina: 270-318 (53.5 - 63%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

My opinion is that Mismagius should be on C-/C rank on WG rank

Replays

vs Slapthatman
vs AcuraRL
vs AcuraRL (2)

Replay where a flaw of Mismagius is shown

vs AcuraRL (Trick Weakness)

I know i´m terrible at writing a Pokemon showcase, but at least i´m trying my best.
