LC Offensive Trapper Diglett [QC 2/2] [GP 1/1]

Not open for further replies.
[OVERVIEW]
Diglett's Speed tier and access to Arena Trap make it a threat to nearly every grounded Pokemon. It can trap and remove offensive threats such as Abra, Elekid, Chinchou, Ponyta, and Houndour to support its team. Defensively, it may appear underwhelming, but its immunity to Electric and not much need for high Attack investment allow Diglett to invest in bulk to customize what it's capable of trapping. One of its major shortcoming, however, is the ever-present Porygon's access to Trace and Ice Beam to counter-trap. After a successful trap, Water-types such as Staryu and Wailmer are a concern for Diglett as well, with their powerful STAB moves being difficult to switch into, and they do not fear much from Diglett.

[SET]
Offensive Trapper (Diglett) @ Liechi Berry
Level: 5
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 36 HP / 156 Atk / 80 Def / 236 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Hidden Power Ghost / Thief / Screech
- Substitute

[SET COMMENTS]
Diglett makes use of its Speed to remove a wide variety of threats and aggressively close out games. The Attack EVs allow Diglett at +1 to OHKO Pokemon the more common specially defensive set can't, such as Anorith, Staryu, and bulky Abra, with Earthquake. Defensively, it is capable of surviving an Earthquake from specially defensive Diglett and OHKOing it back with its own. Hidden Power Ghost is the best option for KOing Gastly and dealing respectable damage to Duskull and Exeggcute. Thief and Screech are alternatives to either steal a Sitrus Berry from Porygon and Trapinch or lower their Defense to make Porygon vulnerable to a counter-trap from an ally Porygon or Trapinch. Substitute allows Diglett to lower its HP to activate its Liechi Berry against slower Pokemon, raising its Attack stat to an impressive 21.

It is advised to save Diglett for late-game, as the omnipresent Porygon is a sure-fire way to remove it. It struggles to switch into many threats as well. While it has some of the highest damage output in the tier after a boost, Diglett still struggles to OHKO a large portion of the metagame. Spikes from the likes of Cacnea, Snorunt, and Pineco lessen this issue, with the former being capable of switching into the Water-types that threaten Diglett. Porygon removes Trapinch after it comes in to counter-trap Diglett, and when paired with Screech, it can use Trace to counter-trap an opposing Porygon that has traced Arena Trap. Gastly is an ideal partner for taking advantage of Quick Attack users such as Trapinch and Doduo, which revenge kill a low HP Diglett after activating its Liechi Berry.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Choice Band allows Diglett to always output the same damage as Liechi Berry without burning through its HP, but being locked into any one of its moves is a massive downside. Sludge Bomb lets Diglett trap and KO chipped Cacnea and Exeggcute, but neither of these Pokemon are common enough to justify the moveslot. Toxic is an alternative to Rock Slide if wearing down Porygon and Duskull more necessary than coverage for Doduo.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Porygon**: One of the most common play patterns in the tier is Porygon coming in on a Diglett after a KO to trace Arena Trap and remove it with Ice Beam. There is virtually no counterplay once Porygon is brought in, but Thief can be used to remove Porygon's Sitrus Berry prior to being KOed.

**Water-types**: Wailmer, Horsea, and Staryu all come in to revenge kill Diglett and threaten teams with their powerful Water-type STAB moves.

**Trapinch** Similarly to Porygon, Trapinch comes in to counter-trap Diglett, being able to preserve its Sitrus Berry against weakened Diglett by using Quick Attack.

Diglett's speed tier and access to Arena Trap makes it a threat to nearly every grounded Pokemon. Offensive threats such as Abra, Elekid, Chinchou , Ponyta and Houndour can be reliably The overview apply for the offensive trapper set too wich can't switch in vs abra and elekid if you meant beat them 1v1 i would remove elekid since liechi set doesn't beat it reliable. trapped and removed to support its team. Defensively it may appear underwhelming, but an immunity to Electric, and not much need for high Attack investment allows Diglett to invest in bulk to customize what its capable of trapping. This set aims to flex make use of Dont have to add this but i believe this make it easier for the reader Diglett's Speed to remove a wide variety of threats, and aggressively close out games. The Attack EVs allow Diglett at +1 to OHKO Pokemon it would typically struggle to handle, such as Anorith with Rock Slide Earthqauke same roll no miss chance , or Staryu and Bulky Abra with Earthquake. Defensively, it is capable of surviving an Earthquake from Specially Defensive Diglett and OHKOing back with its own. Hidden Power Ghost is the best option for KOing Gastly, and dealing respectable damage to Duskull or Exeggcute. Thief and Screech are there as alternatives, to either steal Sitrus Berrys from Porygon and Trapinch, or lowering their Defense to set up a Porygon for a countertrap. Substitute allows it to lower its HP to proc Liechi Berry on slower Pokemon to fire off EQs Attacks Again you can keep this but the other moves benefit from the boost too for example rock slide on cb doduo off a now impressive 21 Attack.

It is advised to save Diglett for late-game, as the omnipresent Porygon is a surefire way to remove it outside of a Rock Slide flinch, and unlike its Specially Defensive counterpart, is unable to switch into many threats. While having some of the highest damage output in the tier after a boost, Diglett will still struggle to OHKO a large portion of the metagame. Spikes from the likes of Cacnea or Pineco lessen this issue, and the former is capable of switching into the Water types that threaten a Diglett. Porygon removes Trapinch after it comes in to Quick Attack a weakened Diglett, and when paired with screech can use Trace to countertrap a Porygon with Arena Trap. Gastly is an ideal partner for taking advantage of Quick Attack users such as Trapinch or Doduo that RK a Diglett that had to Substitute down.

**Porygon**: One of the most common play patterns in the tier will be Porygon coming in on a Diglett after a KO to trace Arena Trap and remove it with Ice Beam. Very little Diglett can do outside of going for a Rock Slide flinch if Liechi, or Thief to remove the Sitrus Berry if Specially Defensive.

**Water-Types**: Wailmer, Horsea, and Staryu all come in after a Diglett kill to threaten teams with their water STABs, or setting Rain Dance to set up Swift Swim in the case of Horsea. if you have a sitrus berry and sub on the rain dance you win that interaction

**Trapinch** Similarly to Porygon, will come in to countertrap Diglett, notably using Quick Attack to avoid getting hit by Offensive Trapper Diglett's boosted EQs.

Hidden Power Ghost is the best option for KOing Gastly, and dealing respectable damage to Duskull or Exeggcute. Thief and Screech are there as alternatives, to either steal Sitrus Berrys from Porygon and Trapinch, (i'm not sure if Sitrus Berrys is correct, you could write a Sitrus Berry instead?) or lowering their Defense to set up a Porygon for a counter-trap. (add hyphen again) Substitute allows it to lower its HP to proc activate its Liechi Berry on slower Pokemon to raise its Attack stat to an impressive 21.

It is advised to save Diglett for late-game, as the omnipresent Porygon is a surefire way to remove it outside of a Rock Slide flinch, (discussed on Discord but standard Porygon should always beat Diglett, even at +1) and unlike its Sspecially Ddefensive counterpart, is unable to switch into many threats. While having it has some of the highest damage output in the tier after a boost, Diglett will still struggle to OHKO a large portion of the metagame. Porygon removes Trapinch after it comes in to Quick Attack a weakened Diglett, (could this be simplified to pick off? +1 156 Atk Diglett Earthquake vs. 236 HP / 80 Def Trapinch: 20-24 (83.3 - 100%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO + trapinch kills from full with EQ) and when paired with Sscreech can use Trace to counter-trap (add hyphen) an oppposing Porygon with that has traced Arena Trap. Gastly is an ideal partner for taking advantage of Quick Attack users such as Trapinch or Doduo that RK revenge kill a Diglett that had to Substitute down.

(the points aren't really connected at all so it could honestly be a new sentence. is there also a need to compare sets here? we try to avoid cross-set references so a reader can understand full info from just the set they're using. is it fine to just say 'it struggles to switch into many threats'?) While it has some of the highest damage output in the tier after a boost, Diglett will still struggle struggles (future-->present tense) to OHKO a large portion of the metagame.
