Air Balloon Heatran gives teams a multifaceted offensive threat that has valuable defensive utility and can support its teammates by laying down entry hazards. Offensively, Heatran threatens common Pokemon such as Ferrothorn, Gholdengo, and Mega Scizor without Terastallizing, and Grass Terastal along with Tera Blast allows it to threaten Gastrodon, Rotom-W, and Mega Swampert. Heatran's defensive typing allows it to check threats such as Tape Lele, Choice Specs Dragapult, and Cyclizar, while after Terastallizing it can deal with Mega Swampert and Rotom-W. Magma Storm is the preferred STAB attack, as it applies meaningful chip damage to checks such as Ting-Lu and Mega Tyranitar. Earth Power allows Heatran to hit opposing Heatran, Toxapex, and Mega Tyranitar. Heatran is a good Stealth Rock user, as it can threaten removal options such as Corviknight and Tornadus-T with immediate damage, while also potentially doing well against Great Tusk (calc this) and Tapu Find after using Terastal. Terastal should also be used in situations where Heatran must force damage onto Water-types such as Rotom-W, Gastrodon, and Slowbro, or in situations where the defensive typing is necessary, such as when facing down a rain team or a dangerous Ground-type after the Air Balloon has been popped.
