Gen 1 NU Fearow Mini-Analysis (QC 2/2) (GP 1/1)

[OVERVIEW]

Fearow boasts a myriad of highly coveted attributes that only it can proudly claim in NU. With a blistering base 100 base speed, Fearow speed ties with Charizard and Ninetales while outpacing tier staples like Mr. Mime, Venomoth, and Nidoking. The relatively high critical hit chance provided by its Speed. coupled with STAB Hyper Beam makes Fearow a phenomenal cleaner against weakened teams, and can even further boost its Speed with Agility for insurance against faster foes and to bypass the Speed drop from paralysis. Fearow is a great late-game cleaner and revenge killer due to its great Speed and powerful STAB moves, but due to its terrible bulk, it generally cannot afford to trade blows with anything it cannot KO. Fearow's defensive typing is quite double-edged, pun intended, and while a Ground immunity is great, Fearow's weakness to the ever-present BoltBeam coverage becomes quite a liability. Fearow is also completely walled by Rock-types, meaning it requires heavy support to guarantee it can fulfill its duty as a sweeper, while other fast cleaners like Charizard and Raticate can create holes in the opposing team for themselves, making them much more self-sufficient.

move 1: Hyper Beam
move 2: Double Edge
move 3: Drill Peck
move 4: Agility / Mirror Move

[SET COMMENTS]

Drill Peck can be used to easily 2HKO Sleep Powder users Venomoth and Exeggcute without taking recoil damage and also bypasses Counter, although it is significantly weaker than Fearow's other STAB options against other targets. Agility allows Fearow to clean up against the few Pokemon faster than it, and also avoid the speed tie with Charizard and Ninetales while outspeeding Electrode or to negate a Paralysis Speed drop. Mirror Move has niche applications that one may find game-to-game, copying Earthquake from a weakened Golem or Nidoking to pick it off, for example.

Because of Fearow's ability to sweep so well, Pokemon that often force trades like Mr. Mime, Clefable, and Nidoking are great partners, as even if they can't take something out themselves, they always end up leaving the opponent at low HP—perfect for Fearow to prey on. Pokemon that can force damage on Golem and Kabutops, which are hard checks to Fearow, also make for great teammates. Super Fang Raticate, that carry either Blizzard or Bubble Beam for Golem and Thunderbolt for Kabutops can very effectively weaken the respective check for Fearow, making it a perfect teammate. Swords Dance Earthquake Charizard can also take huge chunks of HP off these Rock-types. Having these additional faster Pokemon often means the opponent's speed control beyond paralysis can easily be overwhelmed. In matchups without opposing Rock-types, Fearow's unresisted STAB moves can be used to its heart's content, 2HKOing other metagame staples like Mr. Mime, Clefable, and Venomoth and opening up holes in defensive Pokemon like Kingler and Blastoise, although it must be wary of Counter from the latter. Weakening these bulky Water-types and forcing the opponent to reveal their Rock-type early if they have one is incredibly valuable for teammates like Charizard.

Great work so far, implement comments for QC 1/2. You can phrase them how you want, I just made brief notes

While Fearow is a great late-game cleaner, its presence early on isn't so threatening, due to its reliance on Hyper Beam and Double Edge to deal meaningful damage, and with its terrible bulk, it generally cannot afford to trade blows with anything it cannot KO. Drill Peck is a great secondary STAB to pair with Hyper Beam and Double Edge, both of which have drawbacks you'd want to avoid if necessary, (IMO you really only click this vs Moth or Egg or when recoil damage puts you in KO range) although it is significantly weaker than Fearow's other STAB options. Drill Peck also effortlessly 2HKO's Venomoth (and Egg, fucking up both sleepers in the tier is cool). Agility allows Fearow to clean up against the few Pokemon faster than it, namely avoiding the speed tie with Charizard and Ninetales and outspeeding Electrode. Mirror Move has plenty of niche applications ("plenty" is a bit much, mirror move sucks ass most times especially as its a free switch if read) that one may find game-to-game, copying a weakened Golem or Nidoking Earthquake to pick them off, or a Thunder Wave in a matchup against the likes of Mr. Mime or Clefable (this wouldnt work cause they'd outspeed you post Twave and use Bolt/Blizz), where Fearow's odds of coming out on top are quite low otherwise.

Because of Fearow's ability to sweep so well, Pokemon that often force trades to take down like Mr. Mime, Clefable, and Nidoking are great partners as even if they can't take something out themselves, they always end up leaving the opponent at low HP, perfect for Fearow to prey on. Super Fang Raticate, especially with Blizzard or Bubble Beam and Thunderbolt respectively can very effectively weaken these checks for Fearow, making it a perfect pairing with it. Swords Dance Earthquake Charizard can also take huge chunks of HP off these Rock-types. (I don't think sacking zard to weaken golem is a play but it can straight beat Kabu so thats a thing)

(I would also use the last paragraph to elaborate on the role - how Fearow can revenge kill and what it's hoping to see on the enemy team; if it sees a mon outside the big 5 that isnt a rock it's pretty safe to just throw out Hbeams with only Counter being an issue at that point)

Personally i wouldn't mention agility in the intro at all, it is a slash on the analysis (with shitty mirror move lol) because it is rarely relevant / worth clicking. While Fearow is a great late-game cleaner, its presence early on isn't so threatening, due to its reliance on Hyper Beam and Double Edge to deal meaningful damage, and with its terrible bulk, it generally cannot afford to trade blows with anything it cannot KO. I am not the most experienced with this mon so I am a bit unsure but is it true that Fearow doesn't want to come out early? the zard matchup is bad ofc but it does outspeed and crit ohko venomoth so if say you have paralyzed opposing lead charizard, wouldn't fearow be a good option for revenging the parad zard or maybe something else early game due to not letting venomoth in at all. plus opposing kabutops doesnt want to come in pre sleep since veno comes in on kabu well so at least thats one of the rocks that u dont have to worry about early game. maybe fearow could be a lead too, it used to be pre whirl ban, its bad vs zard lead but it does have a chance to crit ohko mime lead + parad fearow can sleep block okay i think if mime twaves. Fearow's defensive typing is also quite double-edged, pun intended, and while a Ground-immunity is great, Fearow's weakness to the ever-present BoltBeam coverage becomes quite a liability. Fearow is also completely walled by Rock-types, meaning it requires heavy support to guarantee it can fulfill its duty as a sweeper, while other fast cleaners like Charizard and Raticate can create holes for themselves, making them much more self-sufficient. afaik fearow never replaces zard only is used alongside it, but idk if maybe emphasize the raticate comparison more, as raticate is mostly the better choice but fearow is faster speed tying zard and also has the crit ohko on venomoth, also does have slightly higher attack stat than rat but idt that matters much esp given no bslam.

Mirror Move has niche applications that one may find game-to-game, copying a weakened Golem or Nidoking Earthquake to pick them off, for example. maybe before the agility sentence note that the last moveslot is relatively niche either way. (outside of some early game sleepblocking scenario, fearow rly doesnt want to take para, and using agility to negate paralysis is extremely unreliable as always esp given fearow's frailty.)

Because of Fearow's ability to sweep so well, Pokemon that often force trades to take down like Mr. Mime, Clefable, and Nidoking are great partners as even if they can't take something out themselves, they always end up leaving the opponent at low HP, perfect for Fearow to prey on. Weakening these bulky Water-types and forcing the opponent to reveal their Rock-type early if they have one is incredibly valuable for teammates like Charizard. maybe something about allowing you to play zard more aggressively due to having another 100 speed mon behind it (or vice versa)? im very unsure tho just a thought i had, do whatever u think with this part.
