REVIVING THE PS! ROOM

NEEDS MOAR ACTIVITY ADFHKDSGJLOIJEKSA

Hey Smogon! So, zwab aka Blood4DaBloodTotem on PS has started to host tournaments on PS! in the NeverUsed room. He has agreed to allow me to post a thread about it here on Smogon. NU is pretty dead right now, both on Smogon and on PS, so hopefully this is going to generate some activity!

What is this all about?
Tournaments will be held on an irregular basis (we're aiming to start by hosting about 1-2 a week, but that number can and should increase). These tournaments will obviously in NU, but will have different themes attached to it (a bit like mini-tournaments). The difference, however, is that these microtours will be held live, with all participants being present throughout the tour. Signups for the tour will either be posted here in the thread a few days before or will happen a few minutes before the tournament, live in the PS room, depending on who's hosting the tour and when.

Why are we doing this?
NU is dead right now. This means the ladder is shittier than ever. This also means that you'll hardly find any battles ever on the ladder. By hosting these microtournaments on PS, we hope that it will be a platform to find decent battlers and test your skills. Meanwhile, it allows the Smogon community to integrate with the PS community. It also provides a chance for lesser-known good players to gain recognition by winning a few tournaments, and for newer players to take a look at good battlers! Yep, that's right: unless otherwise stated by the tour host, you're allowed to watch battles. Also, it's for the NU community on both sides to get together and have fun!

Who will be hosting the tournaments?
The original idea needs to be credited to Blood4DaBloodTotem, however, the drivers will be willing to host a tournament whenever they feel like the time is ripe. Anyone can also host tournaments, of course, but if you want them to be showcased in the thread, please remember to PM me the theme as well as the completed brackets.

When will these microtours be held?
A few of these tours will have signups posted with details in this thread. We will do our best to vary the timezones such that everyone gets a chance to play. For the rest of the tournaments that are impromptu, there obviously won't be prior notice, and will probably only occur when there is a sufficient number of people. For these impromptu tours, there is no predicting when they'll happen. Sorry!

Where will these microtours be held?
In NeverUsed on the PS! room. If you don't know how to get there, click here.

What do I get from winning the tournament?
The winner and runners-up of the tournaments will be featured in this thread, so you get a lot of recognition! That's pretty much it for the moment, but I will try to bargain with the room owners and see if I can get them to give out provisional room voice to multiple microtour winners!

What if there are no microtours currently active?
Then, you can simply challenge each other for informal battles in the room, play on the ladder, chat in the room, or, if the room has a sufficient number of people and you feel up for it, host a tournament!

RULES for playing in a microtour:

1) Do not flame or insult other users, no matter how bad you think they are.
2) No ghosting allowed. Sorry.
3) You must be present for the entirety of the microtournament (at least until you get knocked out). If, after 5 minutes of inactivity or absence after the brackets are posted, an activity win will be given to the opponent, no exceptions. If both players fail to start a battle even after all other matches have been completed, and are both deemed equally inactive, it is up to the host's discretion whether to do a coinflip or eliminate both players and give the next matchup a bye. Also, being present doesn't just mean you stay online on irc, or stay online in the PS lobby, it has to be the NeverUsed room.
4) Please make sure that your PS! name is the same as the one you used to sign up with. This makes contacting opponents much easier.
5) Because these are live microtournament, if a player disconnects and times out for that reason, they will be considered to have lost the match.
6) Do not spam the room or the battle chat.
7) Do not give away teams when spectating a battle.
8) Have fun.

RULES for hosting a microtour:

1) Make sure your theme is easy to understand, and doesn't change the current metagame unnecessarily.
2) If you're hosting an impromptu microtour and you're tweaking the rules quite a bit, make sure to give ample time for teambuilding. In a similar vein, do not change the ruleset too much, or teambuilding will take too long. Please avoid giving out more than 20 minutes to teambuild, because we want the tours to be short and sweet.
3) Make sure there are enough people.
4) Hosts must remain present throughout the entirety of the tournament. If they are unable to do so in the event that the tour takes longer than expected, they should pass on the role to a voice / driver / moderator / owner in the room, or someone they trust, to take over.

Failure to comply to the above rules may result in a tournament ban, or in severe cases a room ban.

lol who even reads this nowadays

Sleep Clause: If a player has already put an opposing Pokémon to sleep using a sleep inducing move and that Pokémon is still sleeping due to that sleep inducing move, the player cannot put another opposing Pokémon to sleep using a sleep inducing move.

Species Clause: A player cannot have two of the same species of Pokémon on their team, based on the National Pokedex Number. For example, a player cannot have two Koffing on his or her team.

Evasion Clause: Players cannot use Double Team or Minimize in any of their Pokémon's movesets. In fifth generation (BW) Smogon tiers, the items BrightPowder and Lax Incense also may not be held by any Pokémon on a player's team. In other generations, these items do not break this clause.

OHKO Clause: Players cannot use Horn Drill, Guillotine, Sheer Cold, or Fissure in any of their Pokémon's movesets.

Timer Clause: If a player exhausts the timer, he/she loses.

Endless Battle Clause: No FunBro

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to post them in this thread. In the meantime, have fun on PS and hopefully this revives the room a little.

NU Grab Tournament
Hosted by: zwab

Winner: SolarisFox
Runner-Up: The Stock Market

Brackets: http://challonge.com/211213Gen5NUWeekly/

Note: Maximum number of signups will increase depending on activity levels.

Theme: The winner of each match will swap out a Pokemon and replace it with one on the opponent's team. Everything, from EVs, IVs, etc. needs to be copied over. Swapping is compulsory for winners. Losers will fall to the losers' bracket and stick with whatever the winner has given them.

Time: 9pm GMT (4pm EST), Saturday 21st December

Definition of Double Elimination: Each player will get one chance to lose, except in the finals. When a player loses for the first time, they fall into the losers' bracket, where they will battle with other losers. Remember, anyone of you can host a tour in the PS room! And here are 2 planned for this week, of course with impromptu tours along the way:

Who Ate the Turkey? Tournament
Hosted by: me
Rules: Double Elimination, BW NU
Brackets:
http://challonge.com/WhoAteTurkey

Note: Maximum signup limit will be shifted depending on activity. To sign up, send me a VM or create a challonge account and do so!

Theme: It's the day after Christmas. It's the day after all the gift giving, the carolling, and the turkey dinner. But wait! A blind madman has gone crazy for turkey, and has eaten anything that looks and feels like one! While the NU tier recovers from this madness, we'll have a tournament in this wasteland...

For this microtour, anything with wings is banned (because it feels like a turkey, and all turkeys have been eaten after Christmas). In other words, all Flying-types except Drifblim, Jumpluff, and Rotom-Spin are banned. In addition, Combusken is also banned. How will NU react to the disappearance of some of the best Flying-types, including Charizard, Mandibuzz, and Farfetch'd???

Time: 1pm GMT, Thursday 26 December

Definition of double elimination: simple explanation: you get two lives. Difficult explanation: see above or take part in the tour yourself.

No Recovery Tournament
Hosted by: zwab
Rules: Double Elimination, BW NU
Signups (2/16):
http://challonge.com/281213Gen5NUWeekly

Note: same thing as above and all other microtours from now on

Theme: No recovery moves, abilities, items, etc. are allowed. This includes but is not limited to: Giga Drain, Roost, Leech Seed, Pain Split, Leftovers, Sitrus Berry, Figy Berry, Regenerator, etc. In other words, if you can gain back HP, not allowed.

Time: 3pm GMT, Saturday 28 December

Anyway, we'll continue with microtours and hopefully they'll be as active as this one!

Also here's another microtour happening:

NU Base Stat Restriction Tour
Hosted by: Jonater
Rules: Double Elimination, BW NU
Brackets:
http://challonge.com/NUBST2

Theme: The BST of all 6 Pokemon on the team must not exceed 2400, similar to Budgetmons. You must use 6 Pokemon on your team.

Time: January 18, 10.30pm EST (GMT-5)

NU Inverse Battles Tour
Hosted by: Jonater and Demist
Rules: BW NU, Double Elimination
Brackets:
http://challonge.com/IBNU

Theme: The tournament will be played with Inverse Battles. This means that any super effective move becomes not very effective and any not very effective move because super effective. Ability immunities do not reverse as they are not part of the type chart.

Time: 25 January 2014, 4.30pm EST (GMT-5)

Remember, anyone is encouraged to host tours! Also Jonater you can just post with the same format next time unless you're lazy or something

we did a post-JynxPede tournament today, it was real fun to play in a slower and bulkier meta with all the new (old?) threats popping back up :o I won the tournament, and Nozzle finished second! We did a round-robin this time so everyone could play equally instead of elimination tours which are elitist af.

Anyway, here's the replay of the tiebreaker match between me and Nozzle: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen5nu-85799811 but Bazion left too early for a 3rd place tiebreaker

and the bracket: http://challonge.com/bwnu_postjynxpede

(Jonater was subbed in at round 4 so his record isn't actually as bad as it looks)

edit: we did another one today. Jonater won the tournament!
replay of his last match vs Hyunation (we didn't do a tiebreaker): http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen5nu-86053286

I think it's very intersting a post jynx-scopelide tour. If you organize another one, I'd like to attend.
I find it worth mentioning that two of the contestants used Throh (myself one of them) to very decent results during the first of those two. It doesn't give a particularly large sample size, but it's something to note.
