[OVERVIEW]
Metang is one of the best Stealth Rock setters in the metagame with its desirable Steel typing allowing it to check and set up rocks against common threats such as Purugly, Restalk Muk, and physical Victreebel. The typing also makes Metang immune to Toxic and resist Stealth Rock, furthering its longevity. Metang's stat spread allows it to be run offensively or defensively, making it less predictable and easier to fulfill roles such as a wall or lead. This is furthered by Metang's decent movepool, with options like Bullet Punch for priority and Explosion for momentum and a one-time nuke. However, Metang has to watch out for Fire- and Ground-types and coverage alike such as Magmar, Marowak, and Hidden Power Victreebel and Glaceon. Walls such as Quagsire, Gastrodon and Torkoal can easily defeat Metang or abuse non-Toxic variants with the former two's Curse and the latter's Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin. Probopass is a notable threat as it can trap and potentially KO Metang, albeit unreliably thanks to Metang's Earthquake.

[SET COMMENTS]
176 Speed EVs allows Metang to outspeed Adamant Rhydon. Metang is best utilized early- to mid-game to set up Stealth Rock and wallbreak. It makes for a great lead to set up Stealth Rock as quickly as possible, while having a decent matchup against other common leads like Purugly and being able to play around Focus Sash Glalie if running Bullet Punch. Bullet Punch also helps with Metang's low Speed to pick off weakened foes. Explosion is a great one-time nuke against walls like Gastrodon and Tangela or can be used right after setting up Stealth Rock for immediate momentum. Metang can also run Zen Headbutt for a secondary STAB move, Thunder Punch for coverage against Mantine, and Toxic to cripple defensive checks like Tangela. Custap Berry should only be ran if Explosion is too, assuring Metang will move first when using Explosion or setting up last-minute Stealth Rock. Lum Berry makes Metang harder to stop with moves such as Bellossom's Sleep Powder and Misdreavus's Will-O-Wisp. Other berries such as Occa Berry and Shuca Berry are decent, slightly bettering matchups against threats like Magmar and Jolly Rhydon, respectively. Offensive pivots like Purugly and Monferno make it safer for Metang to come in and set up Stealth Rock, which in return wears down foes while forcing switches. Metang can be used on spikestack teams, alongside Glalie to set up Spikes and Misdreavus to spinblock. Finally, Metang should not be used as a suicide lead, as before using Explosion it is important to scout for foes Metang might be needed to check such as Muk and Golbat.

[SET]
name: Defensive Stealth Rock
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Meteor Mash
move 3: Toxic
move 4: Earthquake / Protect
item: Leftovers
ability: Clear Body
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
This set makes Metang a mixed wall, allowing it to switch in against resistances such as Purugly, Muk, and Glaceon more safely. The given spread allows Metang to avoid the OHKO from Life Orb Whiscash and +1 Pinsir's Earthquake, OHKO from +2 Crawdaunt's Waterfall and Crunch, and 2HKO from Golduck's Surf. At the loss Earthquake's coverage against Pokemon like Electabuzz, Probopass and opposing Metang, Protect makes Metang a better support move user. It pairs well with Toxic to out-stall bulky foes like Bellossom and Pelipper, can scout moves from Choice-item users like Xatu and Glaceon, wastes Rain and Sun turns, or regain health from Metang's only form of recovery in Leftovers. For chances to set up Stealth Rock, Metang can be used as a lead or in kept in the back to switch into unexpecting foes like Purugly and Muk. Metang should watch out for walls with moves to stop Toxic such as Tangela's Sleep Powder, Mantine's Substitute, and Misdreavus's Taunt and Substitute. Metang forms a good defensive core with Water-types such as Mantine and Quagsire, who additionally have a good matchup against Rapid Spin users like Torkoal and Armaldo. Misdreavus also helps against them as a spinblocker.
