Resource LGPE Sample Teams

Yoshi

IT'S FINK DUMBASS

[art by AmirAlexander]

Welcome to the LGPE sample teams thread! This thread will carry updated and ready-to-use teams for not only the OU meta, but for the UU and LC metas as well. This thread will be hosted by a lot of people since not everyone plays the UU and LC metas, but for right now, this thread is hosted by Yoshi for OU, that ivy guy for UU, and Ezaphs for LC. This thread will most likely be updated every month or every few weeks or so to ensure that it reflects the current meta. If something looks outdated or incorrect (or roomauth on PS! or Discord), be sure to contact one of us and we'll fix it with swiftness!
Sample Teams Submission Guide:

If you are looking to submit a sample team that you believe is reflective of the meta, than you are in luck! We are currently accepting teams for all tiers, and we would like YOUR team on our list. Please note that there is a format that you must follow when submitting teams:
Don't use this team it's really old, but here is where you would put an in-depth description of your building process, movesets, how it relates to the meta, etc.

You don't necessarily have to follow this exact format, but do try and make your post look nice!

Charizard-X has this unique thing to it being that it's a fire type with reliable recovery not 4x weak to rocks. This alone makes it more usable then all other fire types, on top of this it boasts neutrality to Water-type attacks and a resistance to Electric-type attacks making it check pokemon such as Zapdos. STAB Dragon Tail, it's 100 base speed tier and you basically have the standerd mew set(but much stronger) in terms of utility excluding Taunt and rocks, both of which mew can then provide :p. Melmetal is melmetal, it checks stuff like <name physical attacker>. Muk-a sponges Psychic-types/Gengar-M, Cloyster, dual mixed beats the beauty Rhydon and rusty Melmetal. Eevee is sleep status removal for rest and is a major pain with sappy seed once in. Dugtrio-A gives another zapdos answere and more importantly a fast decently strong attacker with eq to beat nido's, zapdos and can at full health check gengar-M.

Might as well, this team has won me most matches in general.

This team's core Mega is Gyarados. It has a fantastic defensive and offensive typing, which is coupled with its overall really high stats. It is a mon that can actually fight Psychic-types without fearing them. Waterfall and Crunch are the main STAB moves so they should be self-explanatory. Try to use Waterfall if you need flinch or Crunch if you need to lower the opponent's Defense. Other than that, standard moves. Substitute is a move I use to avoid status such as Venusaur's Leech Seed and Sleep Powder, Melmetal's Thunder Wave (though recently they have started to just spam Double Iron Bash once they see Gyara, probs know what am I gonna do lol) and etc. Due to its high bulk and defensive typing, you might be able to pull off a Sub against a weak attack and thus win yourself some free turns. With SR support, Mega Gyarados 2HKOes practically everything, for example Dnite and Zapdos. Jolly nature is ran to outspeed Dragonite, which as I mentioned is 2HKOed by Crunch after SR damage. It also allows me to outspeed non-Jolly Gyarados. Earthquake is final move, it acts as coverage and hits Melmetal and Muk-A the hardest. It is also useful to hit Electrode on the switch if it switches in (I have had few cases of this). Mega Gyara defeats practically every SR setter (only has trouble against Clefable), so if you believe the opponent will lead with SR, Mega Gyara is a good choice to lead.

Dragonite and Mew can be distributed the roles of cleaner and wincons, depending on the outcome of the game. So you can use one to destroy early-game and later use the other one to finish the game. Dragonite runs the standard set, Outrage/Roost/Agility/EQ, Outrage is pretty good to spam once resists and immunities are out of your way, ensuring OHKOes or significant weakening. Mew runs NP + BoltBeamBlast, which is for me the best Mew set. It is a really useful offensive check to many behemoths in the tier, such as Melmetal that has been weakened enough, Dragonite, along with other things like Zapdos and Rhydon. FBlast is run over Flamethrower due to extra power, which allows me to KO Melmetal from higher HP.

Clefable is arguably one of my favorite Stealth Rockers. It has an interesting Fairy typing for the metagame and has really nice movepool. Bold nature is ran on Clefable as that makes Mega Beedrill's Poison Jab only have around 30% chance to OHKO. After setting up SR, Clefable can use Moonblast or Flamethrower (which hits Melmetal hard). Moonblast can also be used to fish for SpA drops. Encore is an interesting move, which allows it to lock a mon into a move. This will guarantee a switch, allowing to wear down the opponent. When forcing a switch, it's generally recommended to use Flamethrower in case they switch in Melmetal.

Melmetal is one of the best mons, so no reasons not to run it. This set is a 3 attacks + Twave and is doing a nice job doing what it needs to do. Double Iron Bash is self explanatory, just try to not run out of PP, Earthquake is mostly for other Melmetal and for Alolan Muk. Ice Punch is nice for Zapdos and Dragonite (esp Dnite cause EQ is only 3HKO on full Melmetal). Twave is useful if you think Melmetal is a deadweight (such as against Starmie). This will allow, for example, Mega Gyara to set up a Substitute more easily. Melmetal is one of my Psychic checks as well, so if kept healthy, it can do its job pretty alright.

Snorlax is the final member, being a Psychic and special check. This set utilizes Facade as the main move, turning Snorlax also into a status absorber. Earthquake is to be used on predicted Melmetal/Rhydon switch-in, as well against Mega Gengar. Toxic is used to wear down bulky threats like Mew and Zapdos. Self-Destruct allows me to keep momentum if needed and also can net some KOes if needed.

The team is weak to RNG a bit (most of my losses were due to random flinches that I didn't need). Also, it is important to look at your opponent's team so you can decide what needs to be checked. Overall, the team does pretty nice if played correctly.

Sample Teams have been updated!
- The old Zard-X + Eevee team has been replaced with an updated version that is better equipped for the meta.
- LGPE Wish Killer has been added! This team has the most consistent tournament results of any team the meta has ever seen, so keep it in mind as both an option and something to prep for.
- We couldn't have an up-to-date Sample Team page without a Mega Gengar Offense, could we? This one's pretty generic but effective, and variations of this team have seen great success on the ladder. If you're new to the meta, this is a great starting team!

We think this set of teams better reflects the current metagame, and hope new players will find it useful! Further updates may come in the near future, so look out for those.

This team's main idea is to soften the opponents until you can sweep with M-Beedrill. Beedrill has standard moves, and 29 Health IVs to live 4 SR switch-ins. Generally, you will mostly spam U-Turn, which will allow Bee to pivot around to other mons. Generally, Melmetal, Rhydon, or Aero will be swapped in to tank the U-Turn, in which case you can swap into Mew or Melmetal to counter those switch-ins and punish them with EQ, Surf, or DIB. Although, more often than not they will swap Melmetal out when they see Mew, and often they bring in Muk-A, which will be hit hard by EQ. EQ still does a fair bit to Melmetal, and after 2 or 3 you will be able to take out Melmetal with Drill Run from M-Bee. Mew can also U-Turn out, and has less Speed IVs to help switch-in Beedrill more often. Nidoqueen is my overall Zapdos counter, as it is immune to T-Bolt, Toxic, T-wave, and takes little damage from the rare Drill Peck. EQ is for nice STAB, and Ice Beam is used to directly hurt Zapdos and also hit Venusaur/Dragonite/Eggy-A in niche situations. Super Fang can be used to soften foes up, but I found that overall Toxic is more consistent (a bit due to the Poison typing skipping accuracy checks for Toxic). Stealth Rocks too as Nidoqueen can also act as a nice rocker. Muk-A is standard to deal with M-Alakazam and M-Gengar, and hit Rhydon/Melmetal with Mega Drain/Fire Blast, respectively. Melmetal is standard, although I use Impish to deal with Aero better and overall last longer. Zapdos is made to be defensive physically, with Bold/Reflect (the latter can also be passed on to other teammates in niche situations). T-Bolt is the main STAB, dealing significate damage to several members to the meta. U-Turn is used to get out when needed. This team has won me many matches (and has gotten me to the 1400s range on my alt), and has even beaten the #2 person on the ladder, so I say it's fairly good.

EDIT: I have since risen to the 1500's and obtained the #9 spot on the ladder with this team. I have also beaten the #1 person on the ladder: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7letsgoou-976006811

description

eevee-s rly supports mgyara by 1 providing a secondary check to m-gengar, with glitzy glow + sappy seed eevee actually walls any mgengar set without sludge bomb, which are the sets most likely to trouble mgyara. 2 mgyara tends to be overworked, wanting to check gar/(zam)/offensive mew/starmie & also wanting to be able to take a hit vs melmetal, aero, maybe even vs zapdos in some cases so it rly benefits from rest.
rest mgyara + rest melm together check most of the tier and cover each other somewhat tho they share the fighting weakness and struggle w zapdos.

~ gyara spreads para rly well due to zapdos being the only plausible twave immune switchin and its bulk, and the whole team rly values para. twave can be a good move to select right before using rest and also can increase chances to rest loop bc of full paralysis. dropping eq mainly affects vs melmetal as twave is better for a poliwrath switchin anyway.
adamant is an option to improve melmetal matchup and hit zapdos harder on the switch but careful is more consistent for the teams primary special tank.

~ melmetal running ice punch is to enable it to pressure zapdos better either on the switch or staying in on zapdos, to pressure it to actually click thunderbolt (or roost) and not j u turn out of a predicted rhydon switchin. rhydon rly doesnt want to switch in to u turn bc its so easily forced out and is the one poke on the team that can rly lose momentum. twave is possible in that slot, but it is basically unusable if opponent has zapdos, and mgyara should be better at landing para on poliwrath anyway and starmie isnt a big threat bc of mgyara.

~ as stated eevee-s runs glitzy glow esp to be able to check non sludge bomb mgar. mgar is the primary target of buzzy buzz anyway and can block it with substitute, and glitzy glow much better protects eevee's health to be able to swirl in addition to being more consistent v mgar. on this team eevee-s rly does not want to spam sizzly slide too much, it is more for physical attackers that may try to switch in that it would lose too much momentum to switch out of such as mgyara and potentially poliwrath.

~ gengar is chosen for a secondary mega (basically only will mega for m-bee teams). against m-bee teams it provides an offensive check to mew, since u dont have mgyara to check it (and obv is a generally threatening mega). otherwise / in base form, it provides a second switch in to poliwrath (or hitmonlee etc) alongside mew, is still a strong offensive threat esp with possible para support from mgyara, and provides a fast wisp if needed. it also has an ok matchup w zapdos and can even switch in to anything other than thunderbolt (which zapdos may not want to click as long as rhydon is healthy). mega drain is listed here as second attack as a pretty spammable attack after switching into poliwrath, but thunderbolt is definitely better against m-bee teams where mega drain is not spammable and where gar is most important due to being the teams mega in that matchup so the choice depends on hm u want to prioritize m-bee matchup.
(aero would not rly fit well on this team due to not switching into either zapdos or poliwrath well.)

~ rhydon is a zapdos and m-bee check and generally a strong bulky poke that loves mgyara's para support particularly on poliwrath. megahorn is run over toxic bc there is eevee s support to heal burn and toxic doesnt fit the teams playstyle well as para or burn is always preferred (except against zapdos, which there is no way for rhydon to hit with toxic anyway). eg toxic on mew actually does not rly help this team bc it protects mew from para which allows it to burn mgyara. the megahorn damage is much more useful to put in in range of gengars shadow ball or burned mgyara's crunch.
rhydon's biggest issue is u turns from the pokes it is supposed to check, so try to use the teams u turn resists (melmetal, base form gengar for zapdos, base form gyara for m-beedrill) to deter u turn and allow rhydon to come in on a different move (and if u mispredict and lose a poke that was trying to switch in on u turn, then at least u can bring in rhydon right after and set rocks or attack which rly isnt so bad). so keep in mind that u may not want to bring in rhydon on zapdos or m-beedrill if u predict u turn.

~ mew needs to have psychic to threaten poliwrath / to some extent other fighting types that 4/6 of the team is weak to and that it is switching into often. an offensive set makes most sense to have the best chance of gaining an advantage whenever mew switches into poliwrath, and since psychic is required that leaves nasty plot as the best set. if gengar can burn a-muk/mgyara for mew then mew can be rly hard to defensively check after that, but if not a-muk is easy for this team to switch into anyway (obv mgyara, but also melm and even eevee-s can switch in esp to coverage moves tho theres no reason to if mgyara is healthy). being offensively checked by mgar is less of a concern since the team has eevee+mgyara to together check all mgar sets, and since if mgar tries to use a coverage move to catch the switchin but mew stays in its game over that makes it much safer to bring eevee or mgyara in directly.
outside of the m-bee matchup (and to a lesser extent m-pinsir), nasty plot mew is very threatening and this team deals very well with most of its counterplay.
roost is primarily to be able to continue setting up vs burned a-muk, and also to later heal toxic damage if the status was able to be removed by swirl. but this team wants to play mew v 'aggressively' so it will mainly be either setting up or attacking. therefore dropping roost and instead st like nasty plot, fire blast, mega drain, psychic is possible.
