Metagame LGPE OverUsed

New to competitive pokemon! Would anyone be able to help with a team around m-blastoise? Looking to do some Wi-Fi battles on cartridge but willing to try showdown too in the future!

Hey, so I wanted to make a post discussing the current metagame post-Mew suspect as I have definitely noticed some new trends when laddering and just in general when I teambuild.

1. Rise of more defensive teams:
I initially believed in the idea too where I felt the metagame would solely revolve around more offensive teams given the nature of how fast pace games could be with the amount of wallbreakers we have compared to solely defensive threats. However, given with Hayburner's recent tournament success with his semi-stall / fat balance team (RMT here go check it out). Standout mons include Mega Venusaur and Chansey especially, as the two can check a wide variety of threats on their own due to the great synergy they have when dealing with eachothers checks. Even on a team with no cleric support given the lack of Eevee-S, the team still manages to sustain itself via Melmetal and Mega Venu's ability to absorb poison status and stuff like Rhydon and Melmetal having enough of an offensive presence to not be too hindered by a lack of a recovery option. Glue mons like Mew and Zapdos should help strengthen the team even more as they crucial momentum that defensive teams appreciate to pivot around threats like Dragonite and Mega Gengar especially. I feel other team options such as Eevee-S, Muk-Alola, and stuff like Snorlax can be explored more and in general it is quite nice to see a diversity of team styles.

2. Rise of other Mega Evolutions:
Mega Alakazam and Mega Aerodactyl were both considered the premier Mega options at the beginning of the meta existence due to their excellent revenge killing capabilities. However, as time progressed we began to saw Megas like Gengar and Gyarados pick steam as a sort of anti-meta options. It did not take long for these two to become main stream options that can be supported on various teams and actually pushed Zam and Aero down a notch in viability. Soon after, Mega Beedrill and Mega Charizard X also began to see some usage, especially the former as Bee is often now considered a great pivot that can sweep weakened teams with ease. I just find it really cool to see new options being used and the discovery of new techs becoming mainstream as well. I am even starting to see usage of Mega Pinsir and Mega Kangaskhan as well which is also really cool to see.

3. Rise of unorthodox Pokemon:
Dragonite is a threat which initially practically no usage, but when people discovered its ability as a late game cleaner with the Agility set, it picked up a great amount of attention and is now considered a threat that needs to be accounted for. Other special wallbreakers like Alolan Exeguttor and Clefable have also been used as their coverage can dent most of the metagame and they are generally really scary to switch into. Sandsslash is another cool option to use instead of Alolan Dugtrio as a mono Ground typing can help it deal with stuff like Flamethrower Mew and Mega Charizard X.

I am very interested to see how the meta continues to develop over time. I am also glad we decided to keep Mew as I feel it brings a positive impact to the metagame as a great pivot and general blanket check to the abundance of threats that exist currently.

I've been busy, but I decided we could be self-sufficient when it comes to organising our usage stats! I've now got my own algorithm set up for converting the data provided on https://www.smogon.com/stats/ into our way of dealing with things. So here are February's corrected stats, with Mega Evolutions counting towards the usage of their base form. (This is assuming our stats are being stored correctly by this point, which it seems they do)

This brings some tier changes!
OU -> UU:
  • Charizard
  • Exeggutor-Alola
UU -> OU:
  • Beedrill
  • Clefable
  • Electrode
  • Sandslash-Alola

Both the drops make sense- neither of them are seeing much high level play anymore despite being solid picks, and Dragonite is everyone's favourite Dragon type. This does mean UU actually has Dragons other than Dragonair to play with now, which is cool!

All the rises are fair too. Beedrill has been a long time coming- while it's considered one of the single best Mega Evolutions by the council and others, it doesn't appear to be a hugely popular choice on ladder. Clefable has been seeing a deserved raise in usage as an all-round decent Pokémon that does alright damage and takes some hits while also setting Rocks. Electrode has been heavily spammed on teams by players like Hayburner, whether for Screens or fast support, and it makes sense as a member of OU given its irreplaceable fast utility. Sandslash-Alola has a lot of nice features as well- it's the second best Steel type, has Ice STAB and priority to deal with Dragonite, and very respectable physical stats. Not sure whether it will stay long but it's a good mon!

Thanks for your work, Ezaphs! Would it be possible to also compute the Move and Nature usage for each 'Mon in the near future? That would be super cool, especially as a reference to all the "which nature should I use (optionally: on cartridge)?" questions.

I'm back after finally grinding out a Melmetal and Mew on cartridge with reasonably appropriate natures, and I have a couple of questions regarding tech-ing out my sets. This team feels super cookie-cutter right now, but I'd prefer to start here before branching out and experimenting on cartridge. I've put the paste in below.

Gengar-Mega @ Gengarite
Ability: Shadow Tag
Level: 50
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Thunderbolt
- Will-O-Wisp

Melmetal
Ability: Iron Fist
Level: 50
Adamant Nature
- Double Iron Bash
- Earthquake
- Thunder Wave
- Ice Punch

Rhydon
Ability: Lightning Rod
Level: 50
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic

Poliwrath
Ability: Water Absorb
Level: 50
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Superpower
- Ice Punch
- Toxic

Dragonite
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
Adamant Nature
- Agility
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Roost

Mew
Ability: Synchronize
Level: 50
Bold Nature
- U-turn
- Psychic
- Flamethrower
- Roost
  • Since I'm using M-Gengar in this team, does it make more sense to use Mew as a pivot with U-Turn like I am now, or should I run a Nasty Plot set here? I'm using Psychic + Flamethrower at the moment to fill some coverage holes (i.e., Flamethrower for Melmetal) that I feel like the rest of my team has.
  • For Melmetal's set, is it more worthwhile to keep Thunder Wave here, or drop it for Thunder Punch for some BoltBeam-esque coverage? I'm hesitant to drop TWave but TPunch sounds kinda nice as additional help vs, say, M-Gyarados. The hesitation stems from the only other statuses I can inflict being 2 Toxics and 1 Will-o-Wisp, which doesn't seem like a lot.
  • I'm using Poliwrath and Rhydon as M-Gyarados and Zapdos checks currently, since I think those are A. pretty common and B. big threats. I can see scenarios this team having a few issues with certain Ground-types like A-Dugtrio and possibly Nidoking (if Poliwrath gets hosed early). Additionally, the team doesn't exactly do the best vs. A-Muk (if A-Muk packs Fire Blast + Mega Drain, Dragonite's the only thing that can hit it well, but Dragonite would get at least Toxic'd in return). Do I just chalk that up as a problematic threat or is there some change I can make that doesn't totally compromise by ability to deal with M-Gyarados and/or Zapdos? Or am I overestimating M-Gyarados' impact on the OU meta and can swap Poliwrath out for something else like a Snorlax or my own A-Muk?
Thanks for the help, y'all. Much appreciated.

I'm no pro but thought I'll take a stab at it.

Jolly Golem helps a lot vs a-muk (because he's faster than sassy muks, and speed ties speed neutrals) and does the same things as rhydon, if a little worse.

If you keep poliwrath, you probably don't need thunder punch on melmetal, and thunderwave is generally good with glass cannons like gengar on your team.
Polly is great for ground types and anti leading if you need that so I'd keep him. (Also mew+psychic/flamethrower can kill Nido/a-duggy)for you).

Mew is harder to tackle, bold is awkward. But I'd say uturn so you can chip things down and make sure your other Pokemon, especially Polly and Gengar, are getting those 1 hit Kos.

If you are really worried about ground types you could switch mew psychic for ice beam, or Gengar tbolt/sludge bomb for mega drain but I personally wouldn't bother so long as you have a water Pokemon.

Nidos on rt 22 near viridian exit.
I'd suggest earthquake and stealth rock before anything else. After that you got some choices based on the rest of your team.
You'll notice several special attacks here, because lots of Pokemon you'll be fighting will have much higher defense than special defense. Rhydon, a-sandlsash, and melmetal are great examples.
Flamethrower/fireblast helps you to kill steel, grass and ice types.
Ice punch/ice beam helps for flying, ground, grass, and dragon types.
Poison jab gives you a respectable stab option that can hit/poison many enemies. but that's weighed against the general lack of fairy types and non poison grass types in the meta for you to hit super effectively with poison. Steel type is completely immune to poison as well.
Toxic can be good for hitting bulky switchins like Dragonite/mew/mewtwo. It also gives you something to do when you get burned.
Surf is better than earthquake against various stealth rockers who either have low special defense, 4x weakness to water, like rhydon, immunity to ground attacks, like aerodactyl, or no secondary type that is weak to ground attacks, like sandslash.
Thunderbolt/thunder punch can hurt water switchins, and fliers who aren't Dragonite or Zapdos (like aerodactyl).
Dragon tail is good if you like phazing to reduce the general health of the enemy team, and surprising switchins.
Megahorn can hurt psychic/dark switchins.
I think nido gets a 0hko move too if you don't mind cheating.
Adamant nature makes you hit hard, which is always useful.
Jolly nature makes you out-speed base 80 jolly/timid Pokemon like mvenusuar/mgyarados/ dragonite/m-blastoise, and of course other nidos. Jolly also let's you out speed base 100 Pokemon who choose to slow themselves down to 90, like mew or Zapdos, but I wouldn't count on that.
Hope this helps!

And this is how tiers would be affected:

OU -> UU
  • Clefable

UU -> OU
  • Arcanine
  • Golem
  • Hitmonlee
  • Sandslash
Interesting things for the stats in general-
Alakazam and Gengar pretty much switched places, which is odd. Not sure what's causing this trend.
Nidoqueen is being heavily favoured over Nidoking, in contrast to being slightly less preferred last month. I personally prefer it too, but the gap is still surprising.
Dragonite has become a significant amount less popular, while Alolan Sandslash has comfortably settled into the mid-section of OU.

Drops:
Clefable will probably be back soon, I guess people just didn't need it as much this month.

Rises:
Arcanine is interesting- in some matchups that are becoming more popular it can force trades, but common Pokémon like Aerodactyl and Starmie still give it issues and its Speed makes it vulnerable to many common offensive mons. It also has competition in Rapidash, Zard-X and Moltres. Not sure it'll stay.
I still consider Golem a bad Rhydon, and I'm pretty sure people were mostly using it due to a discussion on the Discord that got several people interested in giving it a try. Explosion and slightly better Special bulk are advantages it has, allowing it to deal better with foes such as Alakazam, but I'm very doubtful it will actually stay in the tier (unless someone spams it to prove me wrong, please don't).
Hitmonlee is fair enough. While definitely struggling with Mew's dominance and disliking facing off Mega Gengars, it has Toxic and Earthquake respectively to threaten those. Otherwise, it gets to launch off extremely powerful High Jump Kicks and Rock Slides as it likes.
Sandslash is, in my opinion, the most deserving of any rise this month- the pure Ground typing is amazing, making it the only viable Ground-type not itself weak to Earthquake. It also makes it a reliable switchin to Mega Beedrill. With respectable physical stats, good Speed for a defensive Pokémon and the ability to both set up Stealth Rock and boost with Swords Dance (or replace either for Toxic to catch common responses), Sandslash is definitely a decent choice, even if not quite as good versus Zapdos as other Ground-types.

Ezaphs I'll admit I'm outta the loop on Fire-types in Lets Go (I mostly use Mega Charizard X ocasionally lol), but any particular reason why you think Arcanine got more popular than Rapidash? Im assuming Arcanine is used more because of its better bulk, but I recall there being a conensous a while back that Rapidash was better.

Also heh Im late to this party, but I'm glad people realized how interesting Alolan Sandslash is. It's pretty much the only priority sweeper around, and as bad as the Ice-typing is, I think Alolan Sandslash actually makes decent usage of it.

I think it's because people overvalue Burns- Arcanine is decent at forcing them while also hitting fairly hard and taking a hit or two. It's great and all until you accidentally burn the opposing Mew or Zapdos and now can't beat it easily.

Also yeah Alolan Sandslash is definitely a neat mon!

Heh this reminds me of how I've been legit considering trying a Toxic Mega Charizard X lately. No idea if it'll work and its a bit weird, but I appreciate that mega Charizard X slams a lot of stuff that'd normally be cool with Toxic! To be fair though Mega Charizard X can actually 2HKO Mew and Zapdos after SR even if it relies on a nasty Speed tie :P

Moveset, Ability and Teammate stats can be found here if you're interested in those!

As for tiers:

OU -> UU
  • Arcanine
  • Electrode
  • Golem
  • Hitmonlee
UU -> OU
  • Chansey
  • Clefable
  • Exeggutor-Alola
First off, all of these changes except one were ones I expected to happen at some point soon. That one is Electrode. With how much of a threat fast mons can be, Electrode is great for either helping to deal with them or aiding your own offensive cores. It has loads of valuable support options and is generally nice to have. I guess people were trying other stuff this month though!

Arcanine is pretty mediocre all-round, although its capability to take a few hits make it a decent burn spreader. I don't think Burn is the best thing to spam when Mew actively likes being hit with it though. I expect it to come back to OU at some point because people love the mon.

Golem is a worse Rhydon in most scenarios, and I definitely don't think the few fringe cases where it stood out warrant OU usage, so this is a good change!

Hitmonlee is a weird mon and doesn't offer much defensive utility alongside its decent offensive presence, plus its Speed isn't all that. Viable in OU but not actually in the tier seems to be Hitmonlee's place.

Chansey was bound to come back at some point- it's one of the trinity of viable Sp.Def mons along with Alolan Muk and Snorlax, noteably having actual recovery and being able to provide momentum in Teleport. Its struggle versus Substitute Mega Gengar and absolutely terrible physical bulk hold it back from being the best though, so fairly low usage makes sense.

Clefable is back. It's a rocker that plays differently to other rockers. Not much to say about it that me and others haven't before lol

Exeggutor-Alola is back too! As one of those rare Ground resistances and with powerful coverage, I definitely consider it worthy of OU.

EDIT: Melmetal has been dethroned from its permanent #1 usage spot! Praise be Mew.

Charizard-Mega-X @ Charizardite X

Naive Nature

- Fire Blast

- Roost

At this moment in time, this should be considered the standard set for Megazard X. Not only does it allow it to actually deal discernible damage to Muk-Alola, but it can also do heaps of damage to the rising Chansey, which would otherwise wall its conventional Special moves. In addition, while a bit more situational, any Mega Gengars that thought they could afford to switch in to one Fire Blast or Dragon Pulse could be in for a very nasty surprise:

0 Atk Charizard-Mega-X Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar-Mega: 114-136 (84.4 - 100.7%) -- 75% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

tl;dr run eq on zard or ur bad

I do agree with EQ on Special Zard X and I've used it a lot in the past (also hurts the Nidos really bad, too), but I also think Wisp is still a nice option in that slot to cripple MGyara, MAero, Rhydon, etc. Won a lot of games thanks to it.

Naive also gives it a shakier matchup vs Hydro Pump Starmie since against Timid, it was a roll to 2HKO whereas Naive guarantees it. I think Timid still works for EQ Special Zard even though it doesn't provide nearly a high enough OHKO chance on MGar on the rocks switchin, but as long as you have good checks to it, it shouldn't be too hard to chip w/ rocks. You still 2HKO Chansey and A-Muk, its primary targets, with Timid EQ anyway.

actually gonna have to disagree lol, Toxic is also a great option for that slot. I've been running ZardX a fair amount over the past few days on the ladder, and Toxic lets it deal a lot better with foes such as Mew, Zapdos and Starmie. It also pretty much deals with Chansey. Also I've been running a Calm nature instead with Toxic sets, as it lets you Toxic a Mew or Zapdos then heal up after they attack next turn. You can then stall them out and be at full health by the end of it which is pretty neat. Earthquake is definitely solid though, and so is Wisp- I have a feeling ZardX might be underrated in general right now, and having multiple set options only adds to that.

Here's a cool tech that I've been running with great success after being inspired by the recent Earthquake Special Zard X discussion: Earthquake Mega Blastoise.

Abrams (Blastoise-Mega) @ Blastoisinite
Ability: Mega Launcher
Level: 50
Shiny: Yes
Happiness: 70
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump / Scald
- Ice Beam
- Dark Pulse
- Earthquake

It accomplish the same thing Special Zard X can do with its Timid Earthquake: 2HKOes both Chansey and Alolan Muk, two Pokemon that would otherwise give Mega Blastoise trouble.

Mega Blastoise (Timid) Earthquake vs. Chansey: 169-199 (52 - 61.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (100.00% chance to 2HKO after accuracy)

Mega Blastoise (Timid) Earthquake vs. Muk-Alola: 90-106 (50 - 58.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (100.00% chance to 2HKO after accuracy)

I've been pairing this with a Thunder Wave Electrode, and everything in the game that gets Paralyzed becomes slower than this Pokemon unless they used Agility or something, and paralyzing Alakazam, Starmie, Gengar, and Mew is something Mega Blastoise greatly appreciates.

It appears that resources for LGPE OU have been pretty sparse lately. I went to check the Smogon analysis for some sets, but we really only have like, 5 analysises... Off the top of my head, I would say the best mons are still Mew, Alakazam, Melmetal, Alola Muk, Aerodactyl, Starmie, Gengar, Zapdos

Analyses for Gengar and Mew are in the works, and hopefully more will follow after that!

I'd also say Venusaur is one of the scariest mons to go up against in LGOU despite the many Psychics. Sleep Powder is such a difficult move to switch into when you don't have a Grass-type of your own, and many teams often don't carry one. Leech Seed is also great at sapping health from some of its checks that have high HP stats like Mew, Melmetal, Chansey, and Snorlax, while also supporting its team when it switches out. For these qualities, Venusaur has become a staple for many of my teams.
