Hello!

First things first, you may have noticed that JolteMons Random Battles are now live on the main Pokémon Showdown server! This is super exciting, especially after a very long and, believe me, VERY difficult process. HUGE shoutouts to anaconja for actually getting the code up in scoopapa's absence (highkey that I definitely should've been the one to do that but he took it upon himself when we weren't doing anything, huge shoutouts once again). Also, I'd like to thank Kris and Annika for making JolteMons' extremely outdated code compatible with the main server.

However, because of the differences between DragonHeaven and the main server, the transfer wasn't quite 1:1, resulting in quite a few bugs. Some of these may be fixed in the future, but I won't any promises since getting stuff on main is a strict and long process. These are just things that new and old players alike should be aware of when playing on main
- The Ghost version of Curse doesn't work
- Any field effect that was edited (for ability/item effects) doesn't display even if they're active. They still function, however. These effects include Rain, Sun, Desolate Land, Primordial Sea, Gravity, and Stealth Rock
- This is not a bug, but Soul Blade doesn't display levels. This is because they changed the code for it to compress it, which removed the named levels and just applies the boosts to original item
- Meltdown displays as G-Max Meltdown instead of a custom move. (I assume) The move still works as intended, however
- Linoone has the wrong moveset, having Lilligant's moveset. This mistake is actually present on both DH and main
- Pokemon with Megas have their pre-Mega ability before they Mega Evolve
- Parental Bond's second hit appears to only do 1 damage

Below are all item generation-related things, which have a slightly higher chance of being fixed since they're easier to code
- Soul Blade is much more common than it is on DH, so you may notice some weird things like Soul Blade Poison Heal Gliscor
- A Meloetta with 4 Special moves will probably have a Relic Charm (which turns it into Melo-Pirouette) (On DH, Melos with Special moves don't get Relic Charm)
- Same thing as above for a Zen Unova Darmanitan with physical moves
- Clawitzer, Toxtricity, and Electrode aren't guaranteed to get Chill Drive (for Techno Blast), instead probably getting their STAB Drive
- Same thing as above for Duraludon (it's supposed to get Burn Drive, I assume it'll be random now, which is actually probably cooler)
- Pokemon with Honey Gather don't get Red Card (which was used to activate the ability)
- Pokemon with Fling (only Kyurem-Black iirc) don't get Boomerang
- Pokemon with setup moves won't get Cursed Belt
- I saw a mon with Rototiller get a Choice item once, but I'm not sure how that happened
- A team can generate two Pokemon holding Mega Stones

Please let me know if any other bugs or weird things show up so I can make others aware of them!

With that, let's start Week 2 of Victim of the Week!
Rules (mostly stolen from OU's thread)
1. When nominating a check or counter, be sure to consider Smogon's definition of a check and counter
Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
Say the victim in question was Choice Specs Dragapult:
:sm/dragapult:
Dragapult @ Choice Specs
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Draco Meteor
- U-turn
- Flamethrower / Thunder

An example of a check to Dragapult would be Mega Sceptile because it can always beat Dragapult on a free switch because Dragon Pulse always OHKOs Dragapult

An example of a counter to Dragapult would be Muk-Alola because it can safely switch into any of Dragapult's moves and KO it with Knock Off after taking another hit

There are some parts of those definitions that may be confusing to the unfamiliar, so now I'm going to make sure we're all on the same page. "Hax" does not mean cheats or codes used to win. "Hax" means, loosely, things that have a chance of happening but usually don't, for example, critical hits (under most circumstances), Ice Beam freezing, and Fire Blast missing. This means that we don't take into account these types of things when we analyze if one Pokémon checks or counters another. Despite this, it's unwise to declare that one Pokémon checks another when the victorious Pokémon relies on hitting Focus Blast three times in a row, or something like that. Basically, you're often okay ignoring hax unless something that doesn't have a high chance of happening must happen in order for a Pokémon to check or counter another.

There are some things, like flinching, which you would normally consider to be hax but aren't always so. For example, Jirachi has a 60% chance to flinch a slower opponent with Iron Head, so in this case, flinching is not hax because it happens over half the time. For things such as missing or secondary effects, such as a Scald burn or Special Defense drop from Seed Flare, that have a decently high chance of happening, you need to think about them when you analyze checks or counters. Even though they might fit the standard definition of hax, they happen often enough for you to expect to see them in real situations somewhat commonly. There's no official or best guideline, but in my opinion, if some form of "hax" has a 30% chance or higher of happening, you should keep it in the back of your mind because it's not a negligible occurrence.
2. Only post Pokemon sets that are viable in the metagame in question (which will be JolteMons OU unless otherwise specified). Try to stick to the mons on the Viability Rankings unless you have very good proof (like a replay)/reasoning for something unranked.
4. You can correct people, but obviously be nice.
5. Calcs are incredibly helpful and highly recommended. When getting calcs, assume that Stealth Rock is up (you don't have to assume that any other hazards are up and unless otherwise stated).
6. Give explanations. Not a thesis or anything, but more than one sentence should be fine.
7. If someone posts a Pokemon with a certain set, you can only submit the same Pokemon if it has a directly different set.
8. In order to maximize the amount of subs we get, you'll be allowed to sub 1 check and 1 counter to the slated Pokemon.
9. In voting, you'll vote for your favorite check and your favorite counter. The Pokemon with the most votes in each category winning and being added to an archive.

JolteMons Victim of the Week - Week 2 - (OU) Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados
:sm/gyarados-mega:
Gyarados @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall / Taunt
- Crunch
- Life Dew

While the new option of Specially Defensive Mega Gyarados has been used often as a great answer to Ash Greninja and Weavile, as well as being the most viable Rapid Spinner in the tier. However, the classic Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados is still just as terrifying as ever, actually more so thanks to gaining nice buffs in Life Dew and Rain Dish. Life Dew allows Gyarados to abuse more passive answers, while Rain Dish makes it harder to revenge kill as it accumulates health during its sweep. So, how do we deal with this fish? When calcing, you should consider the possibility of Gyarados Dragon Dancing on your switch. For example, Gourgeist would normally be a check to Gyarados, but if it Dragon Dances, then Gyarados outspeeds and OHKOs it with Crunch. Also, when calcing, be sure to set Mega Gyarados' item to Leftovers to simulate Rain Dish.

Submissions will close in 5 days, then voting will last 48 hours

Kartana @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leaf Blade
- Knock Off
- Sacred Sword
- Smart Strike

if you try hard enough and not get crit by +1 Crunch, Kartana can be both a check and a counter. Though you're better off using this as a check. Either way, Leaf Blade OHKOs Gyarados and Scarf helps it outspeed +1. Sacred Sword sadly only achieves max 83.9%.

252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gyarados-Mega: 354-416 (106.9 - 125.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kartana: 177-208 (68.3 - 80.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kartana: 88-104 (33.9 - 40.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kartana: 235-277 (90.7 - 106.9%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO (worst case scenario because Kart gets outsped)

will come up with an actual counter later

Zarude-Dada @ Boomerang
Ability: Parental Bond
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bulk Up
- Power Whip
- Fling
- Jungle Healing

Counter. You comfortably tank any move Gyarados has, even when it's at +1, and then instantly kill it with a Power Whip. Or you could use the opportunity to set up.

+1 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zarude: 107-126 (30.4 - 35.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zarude: 107-126 (30.4 - 35.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Zarude Power Whip vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gyarados-Mega: 344-408 (103.9 - 123.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Subbing Defensive "Breaker" Buzzwole:Buzzwole:as a Counter

:ss/Buzzwole:
Buzzwole @ Momentum Armor
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 Spe
Impish Nature
- Close Combat
- Ice Punch
- Thunder Punch
- Roost

Buzzwole is perhaps the most consistent counter that Mega Gyarados will ever face in the tier. Unless you plan on running Scald, big Buzzwole shrugs off any move Gyara can throw at it and will SWIFTLY OHKO with Close Combat without prejudice. Momentum Armor also just allows Buzzwole to have superb offensive presence while still carrying heavy defense investment.

+1 252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 144+ Def Buzzwole: 136-162 (32.5 - 38.7%) -- 98.8% chance to 3HKO

Close Combat OHKOs

Careful Nature

EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

+1 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Chesnaught: 93-111 (24.4 - 29.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Chesnaught Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gyarados-Mega: 162-192 (48.9 - 58%) -- 94.9% chance to 2HKO

counter both gyaradosmega and greninja in one slot. if you want a better mu vs stuff like chomp you can run full def and like toxic/leech seed in the last slot.

Lopunny @ Lopunnite
Ability: Limber
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Frustration
- Close Combat
- U-turn

Finding a check that isn't actually (by Smogon's definition) a counter was surprisingly hard, as I went through like 4 or 5 mons that are technically counters before settling on this, I can easily give a whole list out to people having trouble. With a free switch in, Lopunny can easily OHKO Gyarados with Close Combat. Not a counter because if it tries to switch in and Gyarados DDances, then it dies 56% of the time to Waterfall, though it does technically counter Taunt sets.

252 Atk Lopunny-Mega Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gyarados-Mega: 378-446 (114.1 - 134.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lopunny-Mega: 235-277 (86.7 - 102.2%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Counter:
:sm/tapu bulu:
Tapu Bulu @ Shell Bell
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 220 HP / 96 Atk / 48 SpD / 144 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Horn Leech
- Close Combat
- Enchanted Punch

Tapu Bulu is an absolutely sick Pokemon that's been overshadowed by our resident primates in Rillaboom and Zarude-Dada, plus a new Grassy Surger in Rotom-Mow, but, hey, there's a reason why it's the same rank as Rillaboom and Mowtom. On top of being the sturdiest offensive check to Ash Gren and Zarude-Dada, plus being a physical Grass-type that Buzzwole can't switch into, Bulu is a great counter to Mega Gyarados. While it has a low chance to OHKO it with this EV spread, it can easily switch in, deal over 88% with Horn Leech while healing a minimum of 62.45% thanks to Leech, Shell Bell, and Terrain, and then hit it again if needed. Only way you lose are through 3-4 Waterfall flinches, which is extremely unlikely.

96+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gyarados-Mega in Grassy Terrain: 294-348 (88.8 - 105.1%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO (43.7 - 49.4% recovered (+12.5% from Shell Bell))
252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Waterfall vs. 220 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 66-78 (19.6 - 23.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Grassy Terrain recovery
+1 252 Atk Gyarados-Mega Waterfall vs. 220 HP / 0 Def Tapu Bulu: 99-117 (29.4 - 34.8%) -- 9% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Grassy Terrain recovery

definitely on time yup for sure

Check:
:sm/regieleki:
Regieleki @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Transistor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Lightning Lance
- Volt Switch
- Rapid Spin
- Assurance / Explosion / Extreme Speed

The most check of all time. Dies to every hit but in exchange it guaranteed outspeeds +1 Megyara even with Adamant, making it a lot safer than many other offensive checks. Lightning Lance easily one-shots, Adamant or no, and Volt Switch still 2HKOs even with Adamant. Plus, since Eleki forms one half of a couple powerful VoltTurn cores, it wouldn’t be odd to find it on a team with something like a Mega Scizor, giving it a perfect partner to slow pivot into Eleki (though at that point the Megyara is probably switching out anyway).

252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Regieleki: 259-306 (86 - 101.6%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO
+1 252 Atk Mold Breaker Gyarados-Mega Crunch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Regieleki: 387-456 (128.5 - 151.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Transistor Regieleki Lightning Lance vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gyarados-Mega: 458-540 (138.3 - 163.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0- SpA Transistor Regieleki Volt Switch vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gyarados-Mega: 162-192 (48.9 - 58%) -- 50% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

As for what's next, we have a surprise planned that may get announced sooner or later depending on how we want to go about it, but for now I'll announce that I plan on holding a JolteMons Random Battles Roomtour on the main server sometime this weekend, so be sure to come out for that!

That's all for now, see you soon!
