Most of the OP from OM in gen 8, which in turn is from E4 Flint in gen 7. Approved by drampa's grandpa and UT

What is Inverse?
In Inverse, the type chart is flipped on its head, just like in battles against the guy in the Inverse House in Pokemon X and Y. Super effective attacks become not very effective and vice versa, and immunities become super effective hits.

Here's a chart showing the new type matchups:

On PS!, to find out a Pokemon's / type's weaknesses and resistances, you can also use the command /weak [Pokemon / type], Inverse.
There are a couple of caveats to note:
  • This affects Stealth Rock. For instance, in Inverse Battles Mandibuzz would take 1/16 damage from Stealth Rock, and Excadrill would take 1/2.
  • Ability-based immunities are unaffected: Levitate, Volt Absorb, and similar abilities all work as normal.
  • Type-based immunities to status and other type-specific mechanics are unaffected as well. For instance, Electric-types still can't be paralysed, Ghost-types can't be trapped, and Flying-types are still immune to Spikes.
What are the bans and clauses?
Inverse uses OM clauses.

Bans

Strategy
As you might expect, type dynamics are completely flipped in Inverse. Ice is a fantastic defensive typing, with 4 resistances and only a single weakness to itself. On the other hand, Steel is an awful typing, with a whopping 9 weaknesses. With no resistances or immunities, Normal is a great offensive typing, and Rapid Spin can't be blocked.

Many format mainstays from previous generations, like Snorlax and Arctozolt, have been cut from Scarlet & Violet, which will no doubt shake up the metagame. On the other hand, old threats such as Avalugg and Barraskewda are still around, and are joined by powerful new Pokemon like Maushold and Chi-Yu.

Ability: Light Power

Zero to Hero Types: Grass, Bug and Ice

Disclaimer: This is only theorymonning, so take it only as theories and not facts; I did base it from precedences, such as Grass and Bug being great offensively and Ice being phenominal defensively.
There are three fully evolved Grass / Dark Pokémon, Meowscarada, Brute Bonnet and Wo-Chien, all of which gets a beneficial double resistance to Bug, thus shall not worry too much about U-Turn.

:meowscarada: Meowscarada’s Flower Trick become a lot more oppressive with guaranteed crit + hitting seven types super effectively. Protean, though one-time per switch-in, can also prove tricky to deal with.

:arboliva: Arboliva’s STAB of Grass and Normal allows it to hit pretty much everything at least neutrally, backed up by a great 125 Special Attack. This makes it’s limited coverage a near non-issue, as anything resisting Grass will be hit by Normal, and Rock is especially hurt by this.

:scovillain: Scovillain have to rely on Chlorophyll due to a combination of poor bulk and below average Speed, and being doubly weak to Grass worsens it. At least it now resists Stealth Rock.

:brambleghast: Brambleghast have Ghost STAB and decent 90 Speed, but a lack of strong, reliable physical Ghost STAB (Phantom Force takes two turns) hurted it a lot.

:brute-bonnet: Brute Bonnet doube resistance of Bug-type means it can take U-Turn safely, but it gains an additional weakness of Psychic alongside Ground, Ghost, Water, Grass, Dark and Electric. Higher Attack and compatility in Sub teams give it a niche over…

:wo-chien: Wo-Chien, whose Ability, Tablets of Ruin, reduce Attack of other active Pokémon by 25%, making it bulkier than Brute Bonnet, but have weaker Attack, and Special Attack isn’t high enough to go offense. It does have access to Knock Off, though.

:toedscruel: Toedscruel now doubly resist Ice, but doubly weak to Electric as well. Being weak to Stealth Rock is troublesome.
:spidops: No.

:lokix: With Tinted Lens, decent Speed and Attack, Lokix isn’t to be underestimated. Not something to dominate the metagame, but still not something to switch-into safely either, especially with a combination of Swords Dance and Sucker Punch.

:rabsca: Rabsca’s defensive typing benefit it more in Inverse than in other metagames due to having more resistances than weaknesses. A double weakness to Fighting is alarming though, and too slow to fight bsck with Bug STAB.

:slither-wing: Slither Wing’s defensive profile is more of a mixed bag, as it greatly appreciates double resistsnce to Flying, but hates Dark and Bug weaknesses, usually hitting their lower Defense.
SV already brought us three powerhouses for Ice, so it’s unlikely the last three will stay for long.

:cetitan: Cetitan’s pure Ice-type means it’s awful defenses aren’t that awful thanks to only one weakness, four resistances and huge HP, and Thick Fat get rid of that Ice weakness entirely, though it still prefers being on Snow teams, especially for that juicy 1,5x Defense boost from Snow for either Thick Fat or especially Slush Rush.

:baxcalibur: Baxcalibur, our very first Ice-type pseudo-legendary, didn’t disappointed us so far, but it certainly benefit it’s defensive typing even more thanks to resisting Fairy, Fighting, Rock and Steel alongside Dragon itself. Weakness to Grass isn’t favorable, though.

:iron-bundle: Iron Bundle is already insane and superior to Delibird in every way imaginable (a direct upgrade in a literal sense), but now with a much better defensive matchup for Water / Ice, it only have to worry about Water and doubly so for Ice which only matters if the opponent isn’t Ice; after all, Iron Bundle is currently the fastest of all Ice-type! Might be worth of quickban or suspect.

:chien-pao: Chien-Pao is basically what happens if Weavile is a legendary Pokémon, and it only gets more dangerous in Inverse due to much more resistances than in other metagames. Very likely to get banned.

Best put them in practice and see if my theories are right or wrong.

Terastallization has been banned in Inverse!
For our first tiering action, the Inverse council has unanimously decided (in less than 60 seconds of the vote being posted lol) to ban Terastallization from Inverse! To put it shortly, "Normal tera, enough said". But jokes aside, Tera in a metagame where immunities to most types do not exist and multiple types have just a few resists, Tera is not only incredibly broken but incredibly centralizing around those few types. It's pretty much impossible to have any kind of logical tiering while Tera is in the metagame, so we all agree that it was the first thing that had to go.

We're excited to play the metagame more without Tera looming over us and we hope you all are as well! There's a few threats that have stuck out and been really fun to use, so it's likely we will have more to share soon!

It is hard having a metagame without a dedicated ladder but based the few Inverse tours I have participated in (I think I won every single one I was in) I have accrued a list of some of the more potent inverse Pokemon available.

:Lokix:
Lokix is a potent bug/dark type with access to First Impressions, U-Turn, and Sucker Punch, it's bug typing in particular is great in inverse where it is resisted by a scant few typings many of which aren't used because of the nature of inverse itself. Choice Band or Life Orb are the route to go, the former being used in a hit and run style of gameplay and the latter for sweeping. Even those that resist aren't safe because of Tinted Lens to top it all off.

:Avalugg:
Avalugg is one of the posterchilds of inverse and remains as such this gen, being a physical defensive behemoth with good offensive stats to boot.

:Dudunsparce:
Dudunsparce is actually great as a bulky sweeper with the following set. It's access to boomburst makes it extremely potent and able to break past even chansey with enough setup.

Dudunsparce @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Rattled
Tera Type: Normal

:Polteageist:
A terrifying sweeper that mandates having some form of priority to counter as once it sets up, it is difficult to stop without it.

:Ursaring: :Zangoose: and other Facade Guts Users
These have always been potent threats with their unresisted boosted facades.

:Indeedee:
In a metagame relatively full of priority, Indeedee has a fairly strong place as a source of anti-priority.

:Cyclizar:
Enables offensive teams unbelievably well, and now it's normal typing is a boon rather then a crutch. It also has great utility beyond Shed Tail, with access to Knock Off and Rapid Spin.

Some points to keep in mind when playing Inverse.
  1. Ice Typing is the king defensively, Normal Typing is the king offensive
  2. Don't think a mono-ice or normal type team will necessarily be good for a decent team will often run a fast ghost type to break through normals, and ice typing is poor as a offensive typing that will crumble to decent offensive pressure
  3. The metagame by it's very nature is more offensive then defensive
  4. Make sure to bring a combination of both physical and special attackers, it is easy to overload a team with just physical and then get brickwalled by Avalugg; same applies to special and Chansey/Blissey.

Hello! I'm here with some announcements.

Inverse was chosen for Spotlight trios! You should sign up if you are interested in Inverse since this is a rare chance to get games, or if you want some competitive environment while trying out a new meta. You can sign up in the link below:
https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/spotlight-trios-ii-re-evo-inverse-and-forte.3715182/

We also decided to make Inverse discord public! Hopefully, this will help players more easily find games while also promoting meta development.

We will try to update Sample teams for everyone (if Home doesn't suddenly drop first). If you want to nominate new Pokemon to the Viability List, submit teams for sample or find something problematic, you can always do it here or in the Discord. Hope you have a great time in this meta and have a nice day!

Double post to say
Chien-Pao has been unanimously banned!
Chien-Pao's fast Speed and insane power allow it to tear through offensive and defensive teams alike, having basically no counter with either Swords Dance or Choice Band set. It also still sports respectable bulk and defensive typing that easily takes priority attacks such as Mach Punch from Breloom and First Impression from Slither Wing. All in all, it has no place in the meta and actively makes using other offensive Pokemon pointless.

Spotlight is still going on, I hope we can see meta development towards a better trajectory, and we will closely keep an eye on more Pokemon! Hope you enjoy it.

Hello, with Home's arrival, Inverse council decided to vote on new Pokemon. Legends with over 600 BST are automatically banned, while all other Pokemon are allowed. Then we selected the Ubers to allow and the potentially problematic Pokemon to ban, here's the result.

And with that, Zamazenta-C, Dialga, Dialga-O, Giratina, Urshifu-S and Ursaluna will be allowed, while Zamazenta, Giratina-O, Regidrago, Regieleki and Last Respects will be banned! We hope Inverse can see a surge with Home, codes will be updated as soon as possible to reflect this.

Hello everyone, DLC dropped, and the Inverse council decided to vote on some new Pokemon.

in the hills hasn't voted yet, I will edit his votes in when he does but since it won't change the results, Shaymin-Sky is banned from Inverse! Its fantastic coverage with Seed Flare and Air Slash means it's only resisted by Urshifu-R which has bad SpD, and SubSeed, Seed Flare's SpD drop and Air Slash flinches make even special walls like Slowking and Blissey crumble. Rillaboom was broken last generation but with Grassy Glide's heavy nerf we feel it deserves a shot. Darkrai is fast and strong but otherwise doesn't have an ability so it at least isn't immediately broken yet.
We hope Inverse picks up some activity, and the OP has been updated to reflect the ban.

Hello, sorry we are late, but here's the result of our DLC 2 vote. Besides some of the more obvious Pokemon like Reshiram and Zekrom, we held a vote on some legendary Pokemon that might be more controversial, here are the results.

in the hills hasn't voted yet, I will edit in his vote once he does, but with that, Ho-Oh, Deoxys, Deoxys-Attack, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Necrozma-DW and Lunala have been banned!
To cover some legends that ended up not being banned, Lugia has low offensive presence with some exploitable weaknesses like Fighting and Grass, Necrozma-DM and Solgaleo are plagued by terrible Steel typing, although Necrozma-DM will be on watchlist due to Prism Armor remedying its weaknesses and even potentially becoming overwhelming with Weakness Policy and various setup options.
