Hydreigon is a great wallbreaker thanks to its high Special Attack, access to Nasty Plot, decent Speed,
and Z-Moves to break through otherwise solid checks like Clefable, Magearna, and Tapu Fini. In addition, Hydreigon's reliable recovery in Roost and good defensive typing give it the ability to check threats like Ash-Greninja, Rotom-H, Heatran, and Reuniclus. Nasty Plot alongside a Z-Move allows Hydreigon to break down defensive cores with Pokemon like Ferrothorn, Corviknight, Tangrowth, and Toxapex. Earth Power gives Hydreigon the ability to hit Pokemon like Magearna and Mega Tyranitar hard, as well as deal more damage to Heatran and Toxapex. Earth Power also gives access to Tectonic Rage, severely damaging Fairy-types like Clefable and Tapu Fini and KOing Magearna after a boost. Roost leverages Hydreigon's good defensive typing to keep it healthy to help it check Ash-Greninja, as well as letting it use non-Toxic Heatran and Toxapex as setup fodder. Darkinium Z can be used for a stronger hit on neutral targets like Ferrothorn, Assault Vest Tangrowth, and Hippowdon, but Hydreigon can pressure these Pokemon with +2 Dark Pulse anyway. 8 HP EVs allow Hydreigon to take an unboosted Sacred Sword from Kartana, while 32 Special Defense EVs allow Hydreigon to survive two Hydro Pumps from Ash-Greninja before transforming after Stealth Rock, allowing it to Roost off the damage.
Hydreigon can struggle with Fairy-types like Tapu Fini and Clefable, especially if using Darkinium Z, as well as be revenge killed by faster Pokemon like Mega Lopunny and Choice Scarf Galarian Darmanitan and opposing Choice Scarf Hydreigon. As a result, Tapu Fini and physically defensive Tangrowth make good teammates for being able to deal with these Pokemon. Mega Scizor and Mega Metagross make excellent partners by being able to pressure Clefable, while Mega Alakazam is able to pressure Tapu Fini. Mega Scizor can also draw in Heatran and Toxapex and pivot with U-turn, allowing Hydreigon to come in unscathed against them. It also has good defensive synergy with Hydreigon, pivoting in on Ice- and Fairy-type attacks aimed at the latter. Aegislash has similar defensive synergy with Hydreigon and can badly poison Pokemon like Assault Vest Tangrowth and Mega Tyranitar, allowing Hydreigon to KO them later. While Hydreigon can check Ash-Greninja, Rotom-H, and Heatran, it should not be the only means of counterplay on a team, as they can overwhelm it in the long run. Toxapex and Assault Vest Tangrowth are great checks to Ash-Greninja, while Gliscor can deal with Heatran and Heatran can deal with Rotom-H. Lastly, late-game cleaners like Choice Scarf Galarian Darmanitan, Mega Lopunny, and Ash-Greninja appreciate the holes that Hydreigon can put in defensive teams. The former can force in and pivot out of Pokemon like Heatran and Slowbro for Hydreigon to take advantage of, while the latter two appreciate bulky Fairy- and Water-types weakened by Hydreigon.

Hydreigon can also run a Choice Scarf to revenge kill Pokemon like Galarian Darmanitan, Mega Alakazam, and Swords Dance Kartana while keeping momentum with U-turn. Flamethrower hits Steel-types not named Heatran, notably dealing with Ferrothorn and Magearna. Thunder Wave can be used in the last slot to cripple switch-ins like Clefable and Toxapex, allowing Hydreigon’s teammates to more easily deal with them. U-turn already preserves momentum against these Pokemon, though. Defog can also be used in the last slot to clear entry hazards if its team needs the role compression, as Hydreigon is able to force out common Stealth Rock setters like Mega Metagross and Garchomp. However, both of these options are undesirable to lock into. 8 HP EVs allow Hydreigon to survive one Sacred Sword from unboosted Kartana, while 32 Special Defense EVs allow Hydreigon to survive two Hydro Pumps from Ash-Greninja before transforming after Stealth Rock.
Hydreigon can form VoltTurn cores with Mega Scizor and Rotom-H, using their defensive typings to bring each other in unscathed. The former can deal with Fairy-types that Hydreigon struggles with, while the latter deals with Tapu Fini, Corviknight, Clefable, and Magearna. Wallbreakers like Choice Band Galarian Darmanitan, Mega Metagross, and Tapu Lele can soften up defensive cores, allowing Hydreigon to clean up more easily. They also appreciate Hydreigon’s ability to bring them in for free against Pokemon like Tangrowth, Clefable and Toxapex. As this set can not beat defensive Heatran one-on-one, Pokemon like Gliscor and Mega Alakazam make good partners. Tapu Fini, Toxapex, and Assault Vest Tangrowth can take pressure off of Hydreigon to check Ash-Greninja by providing it with a solid Water-resistant partner, letting it preserve its HP. Lastly, Hydreigon fails to revenge kill setup sweepers like Volcarona and Shift Gear Magearna. For this reason, Pokemon that can check them like Heatran and Toxapex make good teammates.
