Notes comparing to UUPL 2019 GSC UU
- :gs/Nidoqueen: Nidoqueen has seen both a slight decline in usage and a decline in win rate. I attribute this to the continued awareness of Nidoqueen in the team builder; players are generally ensuring it is well covered (see significant rise in Granbull and Hypno and slight rise in Blastoise usage) and it therefore has fewer opportunities to break open opposing teams. Nevertheless, it has remained the top Pokemon by a small margin in terms of usage.
- :gs/Granbull: :gs/Scyther: Granbull and Scyther have both seen a significant increase in usage and win rate. Granbull is seeing success with a greater variety of sets now that it rightly has access to Lovely Kiss. Scyther was already trending upwards and players have continued to take advantage of its offensive prowess.
- :gs/Qwilfish: Qwilfish usage has dropped but its win rate has gone up. This was probably to be expected with the rising popularity of Blastoise. As long as Qwilfish isn't taken down and its Spikes removed, Spikes remains a dominant strategy. We saw an increase in Curse Qwilfish to deal with Blastoise, and somehow it won every game in which it used Curse.
- :gs/Hypno: :gs/Slowbro: :gs/Slowking: Hypno was one of the biggest movers between UUPLs, jumping from 19% usage in 2019 to 38% usage in 2020. Its win rate slightly declined, which can be expected when so many people are using it due to inevitable mirror matches. Slowbro saw a fall from 27% usage to 22%, which is presumably indicative of it being replaced for Hypno and possibly Blastoise, although Blastoise usage remained relatively static. Slowking did not fare well this year, maintaining approximately the same usage but dropping significantly in win rate.
- :gs/Mr. Mime: Mr. Mime saw both a large increase in its win rate and a smaller increase in its usage. Adopting the new anti-RestTalk Nightmare strategy from OU seems to have worked reasonably well as well, with Mr. Mime winning both games it used the move. However, Thief and Hypnosis were the more common strategies adopted by this year's participants.
- :gs/Omastar: :gs/Chansey: :gs/Dodrio: :gs/Piloswine: :gs/Magneton: :gs/Pinsir: These six Pokemon fared worse this year in terms of win rate and either remained static or dropped off in terms of usage, although Omastar and Chansey at least remained at a 45% and 43% win rate whereas the others did substantially worse.
- :gs/Electabuzz: Electabuzz had quite a good year compared to last year, managing to acquire a 62.5% win rate. It is one of the better stall breakers with its access to Cross Chop for Chansey and Piloswine and the potential to run HP Grass for Quagsire or Thief.
- :gs/Bellossom: Bellossom usage substantially dropped off and its win rate also dropped. Hypno usage rising might have something to do with this since one of its main strengths is taking on Psychic-types and Electric attacks, which Hypno does a fairly good job of.
- :gs/Politoed: :gs/Ampharos: :gs/Electrode: Politoed has continued its seemingly neverending trend of ending with a win rate in the 20-40% range. It won the only game in which it used Belly Drum and Return and only managed to use an attack (Surf) in one other game of the six games it was used in. Ampharos did not win any games this year after winning 25% last year. Electrode similarly went from a 17% win rate last year to winning no games this year.
- :gs/Gyarados: :gs/Gligar: :gs/Feraligatr: These three Pokemon were barely used but they won almost all of their games. Feraligatr I wanted to highlight as an interesting case, as it immediately swept the opposing team after receiving two SDs from Scyther, an interesting strategy I hadn't seen before. Gligar has a great niche in the tier but people don't generally use it due to its passivity, however passing SD to Gligar resolves this issue. It was also successful with Thief and Screech (although they were only used in one game each). Gyarados has its way to success paved for it with the continued drop in Ampharos usage. It was successfully used with Rest thanks to its Spikes immunity and decent Scyther matchup.

I'm interested to hear any nominations for rises/drops on the VR. Tagging the UUPL players that played at least twice or won at least one game:

Im just gonna be honest and say I think my takes on the VR would be more harming than good. I don't think my experience with GSC UU is adequate enough, I wasnt even aware politoed was viable. I was subbed in to play 2 games and I still feel like I never fully understood my winpaths in either game. My whole experience with the meta was being a teamplayer and being subbed in because my manager needed me to.

Since I was asked about this and nobody else has shared yet I'll start things off with a few opinions.

- Nidoqueen is clearly the best in the tier, but Granbull and Scyther could probably go to S rank as well. Granbull provides a similar balance of offensive and defensive capabilities and has a wide range of solid options between RestTalk, Heal Bell, HP Ground, Curse, and LK. Combined with the relatively poor options for normal resists in the tier its easily one of the most dangerous things to deal with both in game and when building. Scyther may not offer as much in the way of defensive utility or versatility as the other two, but is otherwise possibly the most threatening thing to deal with since you need to account for not only Scyther itself, but also what it may pass to when attempting to deal with it.
- Qwilfish and Hypno should probably be above Slowbro at this point. The advantages of Spikes are fairly obvious and Qwilfish is the only solid user of the move here. Hypno might be a bit weak, but its better speed tier and less exploitable weaknesses make it a much better utility mon which can also handle things like Electabuzz, Mr.Mime, and Haunter more effectively than the slowbrothers. Could also see Mr.Mime above it too but the two aren't very comparable in terms of their roles and I could go either way there.
- Blastoise and Haunter should be higher. Being able to both spin and being a RestTalker faster than Nidoqueen are both huge advantages for Blastoise which make it stand out quite a bit next to other things its ranked with. Haunter is also the most prevalent normal check in the tier at this point. Even if its not as reliable as Omastar at that particular role, being able to both deal with non-HP Granbull decently and keeping Spikes vs Blastoise reasonably well, while also being fairly threatening + boasting useful moves like Explosion/DBond/Thief/Hypnosis gives it a bit more of an upside compared to other normal resists.
- Jumpluff could also go up a bit maybe, if only because its the better of the two grasses. Being one of the only things faster than Scyther while also having the tools to force it, and a variety of other things out gives it some very clear uses over Bellossom atm.
- Dodrio can probably go down a tier since its just less consistent than a lot of the things around it.
- Electabuzz is probably the best electric at this point if only because it matches the offensive pace of the tier best while also having decent options for threatening most teams that lack Hypno or Ampharos. Magneton isn't fantastic, and could probably go lower if not for it being one of the few usable normal resists that can check non-HP Granbull long term. Speaking of Ampharos it should probably drop. There really aren't many valid reasons to use it when most of what it checks well is checked similarly, if not better by Hypno, who also happens to not give a free switch in to the best mon in the tier and is every bit as capable of using things like screens or twave. Being much stronger and having a STAB that threatens a few important things seems nice on paper but ultimately just catfishes its user into forfeiting momentum.
- A few lower ranked things could probably go up slightly. Gyarados for instance seems a bit disappointing when looking at calcs given it largely has to operate off its fairly poor Sp.Atk but it's still strong enough to pose a threat to most of what it needs to, namely being one of the few mons which can reliably check Scyther offensively while having the coverage and speed to threaten things it might commonly attempt to pass to such as Nidoqueen. Alternatively it can fit Roar to disrupt passing attempts. Quagsire and Gligar are also notably better than the rest of their peers in B rank.
- Crobat is criminally under ranked. It's not overly fantastic or anything but it has a very clear niche and sees a good deal more usage and success than practically anything in the two ranks directly above it.

D0nut summed up alot of what I had tbh. The three main points being Granbull and Scy in S with Nidoqueen because those two are incredible, Grasses namely Blossom being very underwhelming and in need of a drop, and Electabuzz being clear cut better then the other Elecs because of the its superior speed and offensive capabilities. I can also get behind Qwil raising along with Blast and Haunter as while Qwil is an awful mon on the surface having spikes is still better then not having spikes and Qwil has been better then what I first figured. As for Hypno and Bro those two are pretty close in my mind so rising Hypno and Mr.Mime too ig to A+ makes sense.

So to sum it up more conveniently:
Raises:
Granbull: S(Below Queen)
Scyther: S(Below Bull)

Qwilfish: A+(Top)
Hypno: A+ (indifferent; Above or Below Bro)
Mr.Mime: A+(Bottom)

Electabuzz: A(Top of these three Omastar could fit anywhere in relation to them due to providing a reliable Bull check tbh)
Blastoise: A(Below Buzz)
Haunter: A Below Blastoise)

Drops:

Blossom: B+
Ampharos: B+

The list seems pretty fine at a glance afterwards.

I agree with everything d0 said, though I'm a little more inclined to say that Nidoqueen shouldn't be the only Pokemon in the S rank (a la 378's post directly above this).

rambling starts here

Granbull should be S

The mono-attacker should stomp any team without a normal resist, barring unlucky ST rolls or crits. I'm pretty sure that the only way a team without a normal resist can force it out without losing something is Slowbro, and while I think (too lazy to run the calcs / think about RT rolls) it can force it out that's usually still not a very good spot to be in.

Given this, Granbull essentially forces every team to pack one of Haunter / Magneton / Omastar / Kabutops. For the most part, these mons are pretty mediocre beyond checking Granbull. Magneton loses to HP Ground variants, lets in Nidoqueen, and doesn't even check the mono-attacker reliably, having to rely on hitting Thunders. Haunter takes advantage of non-HP variants and has some good utility moves, but is frail and usually incapable of touching Psychics without sacrificing itself. Omastar is the most reliable check to all variants, but doesn't offer much else and allows Qwilfish or Blastoise in for free. Kabutops is a good offensive check but doesn't run rest and can be worn down over the course of a game. It also can't switch in to HP Ground variants.

I think Granbull is as or more centralizing than Nidoqueen in this regard - at least Nidoqueen's checks often check other mons or offer some other utility (looking at you, Blastoise). Granbull forces every team into running a Pokemon it wouldn't be running otherwise and belongs in S almost solely for the terror it inflicts in the builder. HP Ground also kinda destroys all its checks aside from Omastar but I hope everyone continues to collectively ignore this.

Scyther should be S

I never build with this Pokemon, but I won't deny that it wins a lot of games by itself. It's too fast and too strong after an SD. It's also bulky enough to get the SD on a ton of mons in the metagame. I don't have as many thoughts on this Pokemon so I'll leave you with this

Imagine playing Russian Roulette trying to check this Scyther with Jumpluff or something. Now join me in wondering why Crobat is C+.

Nidoqueen is very good but not good enough to warrant being the only mon in S

Nidoqueen is probably the best Pokemon in the tier, but I personally don't think it's as clear-cut as most make it out to be. The things it switches in to are mostly bad and shouldn't be used (electrics, Chansey) and the things that switch in to it or that it can't switch in on are generally better or should be used (Psychics, Granbull, Blastoise, Qwilfish, etc.)

laziness intensifies

Slowbro should move down to A

Still a good pokemon, but the other waters offer more.

Qwilfish and Blastoise should be A+

Hazards important

Hypno and Mime should round out A+

Psychics good, Hypno especially because he checks queen, haunter, and other psychics reliably. he also has the yellow magic

Haunter to A

best offensive check to Granbull

Electabuzz to A

most usable electric type, gets lots of moves and thief, hits queen on switch with psychic

Ampharos and Magneton to B+

stop using please they let in nidoqueen

Dodrio to B+

too hard to use effectively imo, randomly checked by too much and too frail to warrant using

Omastar to A-

other waters better lol, kinda niche / stall-only imo

things i feel somewhat strongly about

Quagsire to A-

This thing doesn't even have to drum to be a threat. Earthquake is just a very good move in this metagame because the ground resists mostly suck or are underused (besides Jumpluff ig). What really makes this thing good is that it's capable of switching into Nidoqueen and electrics which I don't think anything else can (gonna ignore hp grass electabuzz)

Gyarados to A-

checks scyther on offense. sits on stall as well because all of the mons are either water types or chansey and so none of them can actually touch it. sure it's not breaking it by itself but the idea is that you can use coverage (thunder on waters and hp flying on everything else to force rests to put yourself in a good spot). you also just rest off any damage from the random ice beams stall throws at you lol

crobat to B, at least

this mon actually checks scyther lol what's it doing in C+

Thanks for your input, everyone!

I’ve played this metagame quite a bit in the last year so I’ll give a few nominations
Scyther and Slowbro move from A+ to S-
- Nidoqueen is clearly the best in the tier, but Granbull and Scyther could probably go to S rank as well.
Granbull should be S
Scyther should be S
Nidoqueen is very good but not good enough to warrant being the only mon in S
Slowbro should move down to A
Apparently Scyther and Granbull aren't controversial, but Slowbro seems to be getting dropped in favour of Hypno and Blastoise so I can't support Slowbro's rise and have dropped it fairly substantially.

Girafarig move from B- to B+
There is a lack of evidence supporting this in UUPL. I have kept it at the top of B- for now.

- Qwilfish and Hypno should probably be above Slowbro at this point. Could also see Mr.Mime above it too but the two aren't very comparable in terms of their roles and I could go either way there.
HSA said:

Qwilfish and Hypno have been moved up. Mr. Mime has been moved up as well.
d0nut said:
- Blastoise and Haunter should be higher.
HSA said:
Haunter to A
Both moved to near the top of A.
d0nut said:
- Jumpluff could also go up a bit maybe, if only because its the better of the two grasses.
Moved up to the bottom of A.
d0nut said:
- Dodrio can probably go down a tier since its just less consistent than a lot of the things around it.
HSA said:
Dodrio to B+
Dropped Dodrio down to the top of B+. Let me know if anyone thinks this is too far.
d0nut said:
- Electabuzz is probably the best electric at this point if only because it matches the offensive pace of the tier best while also having decent options for threatening most teams that lack Hypno or Ampharos.
HSA said:
Electabuzz to A
Moved to near the top of A.
d0nut said:
Magneton isn't fantastic, and could probably go lower if not for it being one of the few usable normal resists that can check non-HP Granbull long term. Speaking of Ampharos it should probably drop.
HSA said:
Ampharos and Magneton to B+
These have been dropped significantly due to your comments and the stats.
HSA said:
Omastar to A-
This has been done.
d0nut said:
- A few lower ranked things could probably go up slightly. Gyarados for instance seems a bit disappointing when looking at calcs given it largely has to operate off its fairly poor Sp.Atk but it's still strong enough to pose a threat to most of what it needs to, namely being one of the few mons which can reliably check Scyther offensively while having the coverage and speed to threaten things it might commonly attempt to pass to such as Nidoqueen. Alternatively it can fit Roar to disrupt passing attempts. Quagsire and Gligar are also notably better than the rest of their peers in B rank.
HSA said:
Quagsire to A-
Gyarados to A-
All of these have been moved up. Gligar only to the top of B, the other two substantially.
d0nut said:
- Crobat is criminally under ranked.
HSA said:
crobat to B, at least
Moved up to the bottom of B.
So to sum it up more conveniently:
Raises:
Granbull: S(Below Queen)
Scyther: S(Below Bull)
Qwilfish: A+(Top)
Hypno: A+ (indifferent; Above or Below Bro)
Mr.Mime: A+(Bottom)
Electabuzz: A(Top of these three Omastar could fit anywhere in relation to them due to providing a reliable Bull check tbh)
Blastoise: A(Below Buzz)
Haunter: A Below Blastoise)
Drops:
Blossom: B+
Ampharos: B+
Implemented most of these changes with slightly different orders based on the feedback from the others (namely Blastoise above Electabuzz). I also didn't go as far as to drop Bellossom to B+, though I moved it down to almost the bottom of A-.

I wouldn't say Omastar's niche in OU is exclusively limited to Sandstorm, but it's definitely one of the strategies commonly used (if anything can be called "commonly used" on Omastar in OU).

As for UU, I would say that it can probably work and it seems like a sensible combination. I'd probably also consider putting Light Screen support with this combination. The obvious downside is that Water-types are very common answers to Omastar and Nidoqueen can't switch into them--Light Screen support could help with this. However, I haven't really tried this myself.

Its been a while since this was last updated and after UUPL and UUFPL I think a few shifts could be made. It seems people mostly stuck with sameish teams in both tours and not much development happened, but I think GSC UU is in a good state atm and I enjoy playing the tier.

With that I’ll make a few noms:

:gs/Gyarados:
Gyarados should be A Rank

Gyarados is an great Pokemon in GSC UU. Its splashable on a ton of teams and brings valuable offensive and defensive utility to teams. Gyarados has solid bulk as well as an immunity to Spikes, letting it switch into most Water types with a degree of safety, and offensively Hydro Pump hits decently hard and Thunder hits most of the mons that resist Hydro Pump. Gyarados is also one of the better answers to Scyther, being 3HKOd by +2 Wing Attack and 2HKOing in Return with HP Flying or phazing it with Roar. Rest Gyara is another option I’ve seen used. Gyarados appreciates metagame trends such as Ampharos and Magneton dropping and Scyther being as good as ever.

:gs/Piloswine:
Piloswine should be A- Rank
Piloswine is quite solid, and in my opinion quite a step up from other Pokemon in the same rank like Ampharos and Magneton. Its very scary offensively with a STAB Earthquake off 100 Attack hitting most non Water-types very hard. Certain teams without Water-types are often horrible at switching into Piloswine and it hugely threatens them. Piloswine has good defensive uses as well with an Electric immunity letting it counter a lot of variants of Electabuzz as well as Ampharos, Magneton, and Haunter. Its also one of the best answers to Ice Beam variants of Nidoqueen, although it mostly runs Fire Blast these days which Piloswine doesn’t appreciate.

:gs/Blastoise: :gs/Haunter:
Blastoise and possibly Haunter should be A+ Rank
Blastoise is arguably one of the best Pokemon in the tier. Its possibly the most reliable check to Nidoqueen available aside from Shuckle, and unlike Shuckle it threatens a 2HKO back, which is a really useful trait to have. Rapid Spin is also excellent with how common Qwilfish is and relieves a lot of pressure on all teams and supports sweeping Pokemon like Sandslash and Belly Drum Quagsire well. Blastoise is close to mandatory on stall because of this. As for the ghost, Haunter is an incredibly splashable offensive mon that has the incredibly useful ability to wall CurseRestTalk Granbull, which otherwise has like 5 mons that can reliably beat it. Explosion is very good as well, and a great lure for special walls like Hypno and Ampharos, which can make special attackers like Mr. Mime and Electabuzz serious threats, and Haunter is quite annoying for most offensive teams to switch into. But it does have faults, like its frailty and inability to break most Psychic-types without booming, so overall I’m somewhat hesitant here.

:gs/Shuckle:
Shuckle should be B- Rank
This UUPL Shuckle got a surprisingly high amount of usage for a C+ Tier mon and I think it proved it has a solid niche. Its defensive traits are highly valuable, as it completely walls arguably the two best Pokemon in the tier in Nidoqueen and Granbull as well as generally being a pain for most of the non Water-type Pokemon in the tier to take out. It can actually pose an offensive threat as well, surprisingly enough, as Defense Curl Rollout is scary when powered up and can possibly sweep teams when certain threats are removed.

:gs/Jumpluff: :gs/Bellossom:
Jumpluff should drop to top of A- and Bellossom should drop to B+
Jumpluff is still a great Pokemon, but its usage was pretty low. Its a mon that can be taken advantage of by most RestTalkers, and it also hates paralysis and status in general. It still is great and has a clear cut defensive role so I think top of A- is fine. Bellossom is similarly easy to take advantage of by most Pokemon in the tier, and doesn’t like metagame trends like Fire Blast Nidoqueen almost becoming the standard set and Granbull being better than ever. Swords Dance Bellossom can pose a threat, but it can be walled by most Normal-resists as fitting HP Ground is tough.

OP should probably get transferred to somebody not as dead as I am :psysly:

Always been a big Haunter fan, super techable between Thief / Explosion / Hypnosis to what you want in a matchup. Have not seen many recent games (read: maybe one or two from this GSC cup) but most of Reece's changes seem plausible to me, Bellossom can probably go further down it feels like an "on paper" pick that can often fail to translate. Glad to see the tier still getting played!

I give Qwilfish S because it is really hard to drop overall. Qwi does great job for spikes and its STAB has nice coverage (specific Hidden Power can be used to surprise), Haze for saving team or Curse to pressure spinner like Blastoise. It can definitely sweep late game with right condition.

Nidoqueen's drop in usage is significant but I still rank it bit higher than Piloswine because it has great coverage to do offensive job well also quite stable checking Electrics. The rises for Psychics hurt Nidoqueen. Using Nidoqueen will add Ground/Psychic weakness for team when you can't drop Haunter/Elecs/Omastar, which makes Piloswine a better choice for team usually.

I was gonna do a big post in here, but I don’t feel like writing for two hours. There is, however, one Pokemon I want to highlight.

:dp/feraligatr:

Feraligatr is a great Pokemon in GSC UU, one that deserves much more usage than it currently receives. Despite its NUBL status, I would say Feraligatr is better than more than a third of the Pokemon tiered as UU. I would rank it in A-, personally.

Feraligatr has a high attack stat and good special attack. Its Hydro Pump is significantly stronger than Gyarados’s, making it better at pressuring Pokemon like Granbull. Unlike Gyarados, it learns Earthquake, meaning it puts much more pressure on Electabuzz, Ampharos, Lanturn, and obliterates Magneton. It also learns Rock Slide, which when paired with its solid physical bulk, makes it one of the better Scyther answers. Feraligatr can power up its Earthquake’s and Rock Slides with Screech, which actually lets you break the likes of Hypno and Blastoise. It forces your opponent to switch, causing the opposing Pokemon to take Spikes chip. These turns where your opponent switches out helps you get more Leftovers recovery. Screech can make Feraligatr almost impossible to handle in some end games.

Feraligatr also packs crucial defensive utility. As mentioned before, it checks Scyther well, but it also checks Piloswine well. It doesn’t counter it long term like Gyarados or Slowbro, but it still does fine. You can very viably run Feraligatr and a secondary Piloswine answer, I.E Pinsir and Gyarados. Feraligatr lacks Gyarados’s 4X electric weakness, so it can stomach a non STAB Thunderbolt or even Thunder if needed. This helps a lot when fighting Haunter and Nidoqueen.

Feraligatr has clear advantages in todays metagame. It has a higher ceiling and advantages over Gyarados, and its much less passive than Blastoise. Feraligatr is not perfect, obviously. Its weak to Electric, it doesn’t have amazing longevity, and it hates status, but its still a great Pokemon. Feraligatr is not something you can just pick up and farm wins with. It requires knowledge of the tier and how to use it effectively, but that doesn’t make it bad. Not at all. If you know what you are doing, Feraligatr win reward you big time.

The 2023 VR update is here. Thank you to the following 25 players who took part: Estarossa dawnbuster vani Raichy LpZ Trevelion avarice Torchic Celebiii Mr.378 Sage col49 BigFatMantis Hydronics zben Real FV13 pp's splash town DugZa romanji kaori Surfy MrSoup corvere BeeOrSomething

Special thanks to Earthworm and vapicuno whos' work over the previous years has made this project much easier.

Collection of data
- Players who fulfilled the criteria of at least one win in UUSD 2, GSC PL 2, UUPL X, UUSD 3, GSC PL 3, ALT PL 1, UUPL XI, and UUFPL 3 as well as Top 4 in GSC UU Cup VI and Top 3 of GSC UU Open were invited to submit their rankings.
- Submitters could rank any Pokemon on their list.
- No Pokemon were mandatory to rank.
- It was possible for players to make edits to their rankings after submitting the survey.
- The survey was left open for about two weeks.

Formation of rankings
- Cutoffs for the ranks and subranks were determined using vapicuno's method
- The order was determined by an outlier-compensated mean ranking.
- Pokemon had to be ranked by at least five players to be included. The end result of this was that the same set of Pokemon remained on the VR.

- Most submitters opted to use tierlist programs to submit their VR. This limited new additions to the VR and promoted Pokemon that were ranked last year. Only three people ranked a pokemon not the VR template used (https://tiermaker.com/create/gsc-uu-viability-rankings-2023-15750132) Due to this finding, the data collection method for next year's VR update will probably be changed.

Visualization of results and individual rankings
As with last year, all the rankings are assembled into a single image. In the New VR column, I have formatted it so that green indicates a rise and red indicates a fall when compared to the old VR. Blue indicates no movement. The pale green and red in everyone's rankings indicate what they ranked higher (green) and lower (red) than the new VR.
vr chart.png

Observations
Differences when compared to the old VR that I found particularly notable include:

:gs/granbull: Granbull (+1)
Granbull has risen to the very top of GSC UU. Granbull is a centralizing and influential presence in modern GSC UU. Granbull’s Curse+ RestTalk set is both offensively and defensively potent, with it forcing teams to use Normal resistant Pokemon just so they don’t lose to it. This set checks prominent metagame threats like Nidoqueen, Gyarados, and Hypno. Granbull can run several other sets too. Curse + Hidden Power Ground is a massively threatening set with little counterplay, while Heal Bell supports Granbull’s teammates. Granbull fits onto almost all playstyles and must be considered when team building.

:gs/nidoqueen: Nidoqueen (-4)
While still a dominant force, the emergence of RestTalk Piloswine and, more recently, RestTalk Quagsire, has given Nidoqueen serious competition for her role of Ground-type on teams, usurping her from her previous #1 position. Nidoqueen's typing also tends to be lackluster, as while she remains defensively useful with her Electric matchup being far superior to Piloswine due to her greater bulk and access to the instantly-healing Moonlight, especially with the rise of Magneton and Lanturn, the Poison typing is a serious detriment and gives her a weakness to the ever-common Earthquakes and Psychics being thrown around.

:gs/piloswine: Piloswine (+15)
The discovery of RestTalk on Piloswine has shaken up the metagame. Electric types are now almost always forced to tech for it, whether it be with Hidden Power Water on Magneton and Ampharos, Fire Punch on Ampharos and Electabuzz, or Cross Chop on Electabuzz, as well as the general rise of Lanturn. Gyarados, Slowbro, and, to a lesser extent, Feraligatr, have massively increased in usage for their Piloswine-checking capabilities. Pinsir now has a strong distinguishing factor between it and Scyther, as Pinsir is capable of switching into Piloswine and using it to set up a Swords Dance. Piloswine has a far superior matchup against Mr. Mime and Hypno compared to Nidoqueen, giving it unique defensive utility. Piloswine also has a much stronger Earthquake and Ice Beam, making forcing past bulky Pokemon like Hypno and Granbull much easier. Ice Beam is especially being devastating since Piloswine gets so many chances to use it, potentially breaking past its checks with a key freeze, and it is also better against Scyther than Nidoqueen's inaccurate Fire Blast and Thunder or weak Ice Beam.

:gs/gyarados: Gyarados (+6)
With the immense rise of Piloswine, Gyarados has emerged as the best counter to it. Gyarados is also helpful against threats like Scyther due to its bulk and Spikes immunity. Gyarados is a threat itself due to its high Attack stat and great coverage, with Double-Edge also becoming popular to combat Lanturn and Ampharos who would otherwise answer it.

:gs/magneton: Magneton (+7)
Magneton's Steel typing granting a Psychic and Normal resistance in addition to the rise of the less sturdy Piloswine in replacement of Nidoqueen on many teams give it a lot of chances to come into battle and wreak havoc while remaining defensively useful, whereas with Nidoqueen nearly ubitquitous, Magneton had a much harder time consistently punching holes and getting it into battle was much more punishing. This still remains true in matchups where it faces Nidoqueen, but she makes an appearance much less commonly.

:gs/lanturn: Lanturn (+15)
Lanturn is more popular than it used to be. Players have been experimenting with it more on teams like Lanturn + Piloswine. Lanturn is a great answer to Waters types like Slowbro, Omastar, and Gyarados, as well as special attackers like Haunter. Lanturn has the best Ground type matchup of the bulky Electric types due to STAB Surf. It can be awkward to fit since it's a Water type that can’t check Nidoqueen or Piloswine, but you can build around these problems.

:gs/pinsir: Pinsir (+8)
With the rise of RestTalk Piloswine and Quagsire, as well as the discovery of Hidden Power Ground, Pinsir has become more popular. It’s one of the best ways to abuse Piloswine and Quagsire. Pinsir’s high Attack, good Speed, and perfect coverage means it's a Pokemon you never like facing. Pinsir has also branched out in recent times. Rock Throw OHKOs unsuspecting Scyther after a Swords Dance, while Body Slam can paralyze checks like Jumpluff or Crobat.

:gs/slowking: Slowking (-9)
Slowking is no longer a staple in GSC UU. It faces stiff competition from Slowbro and Blastoise as a Water type, and Hypno as a specially bulky Psychic type. Slowbro is the preferred Slowtwin in today’s metagame because of its higher physical bulk, which makes it superior against Granbull, Piloswne, and Scyther. Slowking fits onto few teams these days.

:gs/shuckle: Shuckle (+16)
Stall teams with Shuckle have become much more common in the past 3 years. While Shuckle is extremely passive and entry for Pokemon like Qwilfish, its titanic bulk and good defensive typing means not many Pokemon can break through it. As an example, Shuckle counters all variants of Granbull and Nidoqueen. Shuckle is also an effective PP staller, due to Defense Curls 61 PP. These traits make Shuckle a staple on defensive teams.

:gs/jumpluff: Jumpluff (-12)
While Jumpluff's defensive role against Scyther and Pinsir remains useful, its exploitable issues such as low Synthesis PP, the inability to do damage beyond Leech Seed + Spikes, and prediction reliance have become much more noticeable. Crobat has also taken its role on hardcore stall teams, while Gligar has become the more popular choice on Lanturn + Piloswine teams for its ability to stuff Nidoqueen, giving Jumpluff overall less teams to fit on, which it already struggled with.

:gs/feraligatr: Feraligatr (+10)
Feraligatr has established itself as a solid alternative to Gyarados. While it does lack Gyarados’s Ground immunity, it makes up for it with its better coverage and access to Screech. Earthquake makes Feraligatr much better against Electric types, while Rock Slide means it is one of the best Scyther checks. Screech lets Feraligatr cause havoc when Spikes are up, as well as break defensive Pokemon like Blastoise. Feraligatr’s lack of a 4x Electric weakness also make it superior against threats like Nidoqueen. Feraligatr despises status and doesn’t have the best longevity, but it has great traits, and it will likely become more popular as players experiment with it more.

:gs/bellossom: Bellossom (-12)
Bellossom has suffered a significant drop off. While Bellossom can check dangerous Pokemon like Quagsire, Feraligatr, Nidoqueen, and Electabuzz, it is passive and difficult to fit on teams. Building with Bellossom exacerbates weaknesses to common Pokemon like Scyther and Gyarados. It's easy to wall Bellossom with RestTalk users like Hypno and Granbull. These Pokemon also absorb its status moves. Bellossom is good on certain teams, but these teams are in the minority.

:gs/kabutops: Kabutops (-17)
Kabutops has fallen out of the metagame. Its poor defensive typing, awkward Speed tier, and weak STAB in Ancient Power make it difficult for it to consistently sweep. Despite resisting Normal, it is a poor answer to Granbull. It is frequently left fishing for an Ancient Power boost to make progress. As a result, Scyther and Pinsir tend to be much better Swords Dance users in today’s metagame.

:gs/vileplume: Vileplume (-7)
Over the course of the past two years, players have realized that Vileplume is just…useless. Vileplume is entirely outclassed as a defensive Grass type by Bellossom, and an offensive Grass type by Victreebel. Vileplume’s bad defensive typing means it checks few Pokemon, and the Pokemon it does check are better checked by Bellossom. Vileplume has no reason to be used in modern GSC UU.

Chart post brought to you by the guy who's procrastinated on this project for far too long.

I used vapicuno's original methodology described here to assemble the VR and tiers. Huge thank you and props for supplying the code used to generate these graphics. I will also be copying his format and explanations, no need to reinvent the wheel and I personally cannot explain all the formulas used to create these charts.

Let's go through the whole process.

First the data is cleaned by compensating outliers 1 standard deviation away from the edge of the percentiles expected to contain +/- 1 standard deviation of a normal distribution. This is a modification of the conventional interquartile range (IQR), which I have not chosen to use because 50% of the sample doesn't capture the full variation from what I've seen. The compensation is done by bringing these points to the edge of this extended range. This results in mostly zero, but sometimes one or two outlier corrections. We then plot the outlier-removed data as a function of the integer rank to obtain this graph.

VR Tiering Decisions
all integer ranks.png
and we can zoom in to the top 35 mons where tiering decisions are expected to make more sense,
top 35 integer ranks.png

To read this chart: the x-axis "Integer Ranking" denotes the final ordered ranking the mons received on the VR. The y-axis "ranking with deviation" indicates the average the mon received from votes. The blue vertical lines show the deviation, roughly the highest and lowest placements, the mon received. (Adjusted for outliers)

The colored horizontal lines show how I have constructed the tiers, while the black diagonal line is a 1:1 plot of Integer Ranking vs Ranking with Deviation. A mon placed above the black line received a boost to its final ranking compared to its average rank by virtue of a slightly lower average than its peers. A mon under the black line is under "represented" when it came to the final ranking. Example: Slowbro is ranked 12th despite receiving votes averaging 14.46.

Up to Electabuzz the tiers are pretty well defined, but after that there are lots of overlaps between tiers and looking for jumps in the mean ranking is possible but not obvious to the eye. We turn to hierarchical clustering to help obtain the tiers. We form a dissimilarity matrix where the distances between Pokemon X and Y are given by the following: Take the rate at which voters ranked Pokemon X over Pokemon Y, take the logit transform as is done in logistic regression of a Bernoulli-distributed variable, and take the absolute value. Performing what we call a Ward linkage, this yields a dendrogram of the following sort, where the clusters (what we are going to call tiers) formed by setting a reasonable threshold are represented by different colors, and the dissimilarity between each cluster can be thought of as the vertical height of the nearest branch that connects the two clusters.

In other words, the Granbull-Scyther tier is a lot closer to the Mr. Mime-Piloswine tier (connecting height ~10, note the log scale) than the Electabuzz cluster (connecting height ~20). Note that the order is not preserved by the algorithm, and hierarchical clustering throws away information, so this is just a rough guide to defining the tiers. I have added tier labels to help readers understand how I labelled each cluster.
Dendogram.png

We want to verify the validity of the clusters obtained from the dendrogram, so we next plot the dissimilarity matrix and draw out the tiers specified.

To read the dissimilarity matrix, note that zero (the darkest value) corresponds to equal number of people voting in favor and against the Pokemon on the Y axis > X axis, and the higher the value, the more one-sided the voting becomes. In other words, the darker, the more indistinguishable the Pokemon on the X and Y axis become, and a well-defined tier would be a fully dark square (read vapicuno's methodology thread for explanations).
dissim matrix.png

This yields the following subdivision which I have decided on:

S1: :Granbull::Scyther:
S2: :Qwilfish::Hypno::Nidoqueen::Piloswine::Mr. Mime::Haunter:

E: :Pikachu::Arcanine:
F: :Sudowoodo::Weezing::Graveler::Vileplume::Persian::Dewgong:

Numerical ranks represent partial tiers, whereas letter ranks represent a more complete separation.

Metagame Shifts

Due to the lack of real statistical data behind the previous VR, I cannot present a more significant analysis than places lost/gained. Refer to Bee's previous post.

Individual Analyses

For those who are interested to see whose S to C rankings are closest to theirs, you can refer to the chart below. The numbers inside the box go from -100% (full anticorrelation) to 100% (full correlation). They are sorted by the S1 to C1 dendrogram order (and the light squares represent the camps).
individ.png

And finally, these are the relative ranks of everyone. Blue = disfavor, Red = favor. Cyan lines demarcate tier cutoffs.

Closing Remarks

The large number of graphs may seem daunting, and to people who aren't quantitatively trained, this may be really confusing. I recommend just glancing over the spoilers on the first read, only thoroughly analyzing them after you've gone through the more important graphs that have been left unhidden. I'm interested to know what you can infer from these trends, I hope we can keep of the good discussion this year!

Once again thank you everyone who participated in this project and sorry it took so long to get out!

Does this new VR change NU? If so, what's the cutoff?
It does not. It only works that way with RBY, to my knowledge. Many people (including myself) are content with the current iteration of NU as is and the metagame and resources have been sturdily developing for about 4 years by now, and see no reason to unnecessarily shake it up so massively. For things to drop, they would have to be suspect tested.

Hypno is the best Pokemon in GSC UU. Hypno beats or at least checks a wide variety of Pokemon, including several of the most dangerous offensive Pokemon (Mr. Mime, Haunter, Nidoqueen, Lanturn, Electabuzz to name a few). The fact that Hypno does this enables many teams, mainly offenses, to work at all. Hypno is difficult to bring down unless you really focus in bullying it with Scyther, Pinsir, or a Thief Pokemon. Hypno is consistently able to sit there and chip away at the opposing team with Seismic Toss or its decently powerful Psychics. Seismic Toss is also good at forcing Rests, which you can abuse to get in your offensive Pokemon. Seismic Toss is certainly the best Hypno set right now, dropping it and being stuck with Psychic as your sole Attacking move kinda sucks, unless you pair it with something like Magneton that can punish Mr. Mime / Hypno. Dropping SToss leaves you with no way to hit opposing Psychics, which is especially bad when fighting Nightmare Mr. Mime. Thunder Wave is OK on the right team, but I think Reflect and Light Screen are bad all together. The main problem with Hypno, and in my opinion the sole risk when using it, is Scyther. Scyther sets up in SToss Hypno and then threatens to rip through the Rest of your team, so you must account for that. Other Pokemon like Magneton pose a threat to you, but they are easier to handle when building. Hypno rules aside from that though. If you ask me, its the best Pokemon in the tier by a fairly big margin.

#2:
2.png

Qwilfish is the most important Pokemon in GSC UU. Simply put, Qwilfish is nearly impossible to drop in this metagame. If you are not using Qwilfish, you are not using Spikes, making it 10x harder to break through the likes of Hypno, Slowbro, Blastoise, and Ampharos / Lanturn. Unless you are using hard stall with Shuckle, HO with multiple physical sweepers, or some weird Baton Pass team, you should be using Qwilfish. I have tried to make teams with Belly Drum Quagsire / Blastoise / Heal Bell Granbull cores work, but you just end up with some slow build that is on the back foot fighting against offense. Curse is much better than Haze is imo, you wanna be beating Blastoise. Haze is nice in some games, but it can often feel like a dead slot. Early game, you should be looking for that opportunity to send Qwilfish in. You can either double switch it in against something slower, or more commonly, you setup on the opposing Qwilfish. Qwilfish can safely setup on the opposing Qwilfish. It is, in my opinion, suboptimal to sac Qwilfish early on, though this does depend on the same. This is an offensive metagame, and having that sac slot gives you a lot of flexibility. You also don’t wanna sac Qwilfish and then run into a Blastoise. If you fight Blastoise, keep Qwilfish as healthy as you can. Qwilfish is the most important Pokemon in this metagame and there is a good reason its the #1 Pokemon in usage.

Scyther is the most influential Pokemon in GSC UU, and of course, the most broken. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: Scyther is too strong and if I had my way it would be banned. Before Aerodactyl metagame I would of put it at number 1, but Hypno and Qwilfish feel better these days. Scyther is very limited in counterplay. Its extremely fast, and a after a Swords Dance, very strong. It has perfect coverage with Wing Attack and Hidden Power Ground. GSC UU Scyther is not a Pokemon you answer in the team builder. No, it is a Pokemon you try your best not to lose to.Giving free turns to Scyther is a very easy way to lose in this tier. It also helps that Scyther can setup on the very common Seismic Toss Hypno, as well as Blastoise. Scyther has a huge impact on the viability of Pokemon and play styles in this tier. The presence of Scyther hurts Pokemon like Mr. Mime, Blastoise, Magneton, Pinsir, and Bellossom. Magneton and Blastoise teams have to either really focus on beating Scyther (which limits you against other threats) or play extremely carefully around it. Scyther makes so many teams trash just by existing, its kinda ridiculous. I have had to throw a lot of otherwise good ideas out because they get ravaged by Scyther. If you ask me, Scyther is the main reason to use Gyarados over, say, Slowbro, and Piloswine over Nidoqueen. They are by no means counters, but their ability to stomach a hit and 2HKO in return is massive. Double Edge Scyther is the best set, as well as the most dangerous breaker in the tier. Its a great late game sweeper, but you can also use it to bust holes in the opposing team for your teammates. DEdge Scyther, like Pinsir, is just very good at breaking your opponents health. You don’t even need to keep it for lategame, you can just setup mid or early game and take out a Pokemon or 2. Light Screen has fallen off imo, the prominence of Gyarados really sucks. SD Pass is a gamble these days. Sometimes it can destroy your opponents team, but it can also fall flat on its face if you run into a bad matchup. Double Edge is the best because it is the most consistently deadly. Miracle Berry Scyther is also decent, the ability to absorb status can be game chaning.

I will say that the prominence of Aerodacty has somewhat helped slowed Scyther down, though Aerodactyl is used way more than it should be in tours its allowed in. Scyther remins the most influential Pokemon though. You can’t just slap Aerodactyl on every team, that Pokemon has its own problems.

With some minor exceptions (I.E HO or Shuckle nonsense), you need a Ground type on every team. The best of the Ground types is, in my opinion, Nidoqueen. This is largely because of its great matchup into Electric types and good wallbreaking prowess. Piloswine is shakier into Electrics than Nidoqueen and worse against Waters, while Quagsire is slow and not very good in general (I’ll get to that later). With Moonlight, Nidoqueen consistently switches into Magneton and Ampharos and Magneton and used them as an opportunity to wall break. Its also good against Lanturn, though it is shakier because of STAB Surf. Magneton and Ampharos are very difficult to switch into for the majority of the tier, but Nidoqueen dominates them. Nidoqueen can also check Pokemon like Dodrio, Electabuzz, and Muk if its allowed. Once Nidoqueen is on the field, you gotta be play smart. Few Pokemon can withstand it long term thanks to its Ground + Electric coverage and solid Attacking stats. Pokemon like Hypno and Granbull check you, but they are still slower and take Spikes. They can lose to suboptimal Sleep Talk pulls. Blastoise is a really good check, but its still possible to hax through it with Thunder paralysis. The only real counter is Gligar. I don’t think Ice Beam is good, you wanna be hitting Piloswine, Pinsir, and Scyther with Fire Blast. I also think dropping Moonlight sucks, you wanna be switching into Electrics long term. Lovely Kiss isin’t worth it, most of your common checks are Sleep Talk users. Nidoqueen has some big downsides when compared to Piloswine. It’s defensive typing is pretty bad outside of the Electric immunity. Psychic, Water, and Ground are all very common Attacking types. Nidoqueen is a lot worse into guys like Scyther, Haunter, Gligar, and Mr. Mime. When Nidoqueen is used well though, it is an immense threat. Nidoqueen is also one of the most influential Pokemon when team building. You gotta pack answers to it, especially when you decide to build with Electrics and the like.

Haunter is similar to Nidoqueen in the sense that it fufils a role you need on every team, and of the Pokemon that fufil this role Haunter is the easiest to fit. This time, its the role of a Granbull check. Haunter walls mono Granbull, be it Curse + RestTalk or Heal Bell. This is very good because otherwise Granbull is difficult to answer consistently. Haunter is one of the only Pokemon that can do this, and of the mons that can do it Haunter is the easiest to fit because it doesn't let in as many Pokemon and has the most value outside of just checking Granbull. Magneton lets in Nidoqueen and has a 4x Ground weakness, while Omastar is a pretty crappy Pokemon outside of its good Granbull matchup. Haunter has some really nice qualities beyond its Normal immunity. Its a solid special attacker despite lacking STAB because of its high special attack and Psychic + TBolts good coverage. Haunter also has Explosion, a rare move in this metagame. Haunter is very good at luring in Pokemon like Hypno, Ampharos, or Piloswine and exploding on them, which hugely benefits the likes of Electabuzz, Mr Mime, or Gyarados. It helps that Haunter is very fast, with it outpacing Pokemon like Gyarados, Pinsir, and Mr Mime. Its fast Explosion is crucial when dealing with Pokemon like Pinsir I find. Haunters Normal immunity also grants it a Rapid Spin immunity; while it is by no means a reliable long term spin blocker, it is pretty good at punishing sleeping Blastoise because it only has a 1/3 chance to pull Surf. As for sets, Thief is certainly the best. Pokemon like Hypno, Piloswine, and Ampharos really dislike losing Leftovers. These Pokemon are often forced to take it because Haunter has few switchins otherwise. Destiny Bond is still good though, really good in certain scenarios.

I think the best way to use Haunter is to use it alongside Slowbro. With Slowbro in the back, its much less risky clicking Explosion on guys like Hypno because you have Slowbro in the back as a secondary Granbull answer. You don't have to use it with Slowbro (especially with mono Bull being lower these days) but it does help. Main problem with Haunter is, like a lot of other mons, Scyther. Haunter often exacerbates a teams Scyther weakness because its another mon Scyther outspeeds and OHKOs at +2. Its also pretty frail and weak to Ground + Psychic. Still an incredible Pokemon though, that fast Explosion in particular is super useful.

Gyarados is a dominant force in todays metagame. Gyarados lacks a strong physical STAB move and has a terrible 4x Electric weakness, but its positives more than make up for it. Plus, even without a strong physical STAB its still a big offensive threat. Gyarados is a dangerous offensive Pokemon with crucial defensive utility. It is the best Piloswine answer you can ask for. It consistently switches into it and forces it out with Hydro Pump. Its also a great answer to Slowbro, helps against Pokemon like Feraligatr and Gligar, and at least helpful vs Scyther. Its by no means an answer to Double Edge Scyther, but the ability to tank a hit and 2HKO back is game changing. Its also the best check to Light Screen Scyther for offense teams. Gyarados uses Pokemon like Piloswine as an offensive oppurtunity. Gyarados's Spikes immunity is also super useful. It makes Gyarados much harder to wear down and lets it regain HP. Offensively, Water / Electric / Flying coverage is really good here, it hits a lot of the top mons super effectively. Gyarados is among the most obnoxious mons to team build around. Only a few Pokemon can consistently switch into it, and the mons that can are slower defensive Pokemon that don't fit onto as many teams (Granbull, Ampharos / Lanturn). Double Edge is definetly the best last move on Gyarados. Double Edge is nice because it hits Ampharos / Electabuzz / Lanturn relatively hard on the switch; Ampharos and Lanturn are slower so you have a reasonable shot breaking them with Spikes up. Double Edge also gives you a harder hit on Hypno. Roar is trash, you wanna be hitting Electrics and Hypno as hard as you can. Also never use Hidden Power Ground, losing HP Flying is trash. Just use Feraligatr if you wanna use Ground moves with your Water type.

Gyarados is just really good on Spikes offenses. It does a lot for these teams; it helps you not lose to Scyther, it helps vs Slowbro, it counters Piloswine, etc. Biggest downsides with Gyarados when compared to other Waters are Nidoqueen / Aerodactyl matchups. The 4x Electric weakness is also really annoying, Electric is among the most common Attacking types here.

While the metagame has adapted to Piloswine, its still very good in GSC UU. Its worse matchup against Electric types makes it more difficult to fit than Nidoqueen, but good Piloswine builds are some of the best teams you can use. I am specifically talking about Piloswine + Ampharos teams, which are some of the best teams you can use. Piloswine is a fat and strong mixed attacker with an incredible STAB combo. The list of Pokemon that can switch into Piloswine is basically limited to Gyarados / Slowbro / Blastoise / Feraligatr / Pinsir. The latter two are only short term answers, while Slowbro is slower and can be overwhelmed with Spikes up. All 5 of these can lose the matchup if they get frozen by Ice Beam, which Piloswine has a number of oppurtunites to fish for. Like Gyarados, Piloswine helps a lot when fighting Scyther. It can tank a hit and 2HKO with Ice Beam. Compared to Nidoqueen, Piloswine is much better against guys like Scyther, Mr Mime, Hypno, Granbull, Gligar, and Haunter. Its also not as bad into Magneton or Ampharos as you might think. They have to HP Water you on the switch, and when sleeping they only have a 1/3 chance to pull it. Piloswine pairs up perfectly with Ampharos / Lanturn. Pokemon like Bellossom also help get the most out of it. It is the better Ground on Nightmare Mr Mime offenses because of its better matchups vs Scyther / Mime / Haunter. You need an answer to Piloswine or your team is unviable. Piloswine is one of the most influential Pokemon in the tier. It is the only reason Ampharos / Magneton don't use HP Ice (which would give them almost max bulk) and it is the main reason Pinsir is used over Scyther. This influence has led to the metagame bullying Piloswine hard (More Gyarados, Pinsir, and Feraligatr + HP Water Electrics). Piloswine is still a champ in spite of this though. I said it at the start, but good Piloswine teams are among the dominant teams in this metagame.

Slowbro is really, really good. Its super useful to have and easy to fit onto teams. As one of the three main Waters, Slowbro has a crucial role on offensive teams as a check to Piloswine. Slowbro is pretty similar to Blastoise, but Slowbro has a much larger offensive presence thanks to its higher special attack and STAB Psychic. While Blastoise can give setup to guys like Scyther or Pinsir, they have a much trickier time setting up vs Slowbro. They also have a harder time breaking Slowbro because of its high physical bulk. Slowbro is really tanky on the physical side, and this helps when fighting Scyther, Pinsir, Feraligatr, Dodrio, Gligar, and Granbull. Slowbro is one of if not the only non Normal resistant Pokemon who can call itself a Granbull answer. Slowbro as your sole Granbull check is perfectly fine as long as you know what you are doing. Would not use it as your sole Piloswine AND Granbull check though, its easy to get overwhelmed. As mentioned earlier, Haunter is great alongside Slowbro because it opens up Haunter offensively. Slowbro is good on a lot of teams really. Quagsire Magneton stuff likes it because it checks HP Ground Granbull / Feraligatr / Pinsir, Gyarados / Feraligatr offenses like it as a secondary Water, and Thief + NM Mime offenses can use it as a physical check. Slowbro's main problem is in its name: its super slow. This combined with the fact that it takes Spikes can lead to it getting overwhelmed. Slowbro also sucks vs Mr Mime, Gyarados, and Electric teams, so Hypno or Magneton are usually needed alongside it.

Mr Mime is still a threatening special attacker with a large, large movepool. Most of that movepool isin't worth much though in my opinion. Mr Mimes best set is Nightmare and most of the other options are gimmicks, though I do like Thief + Fire Punch. That Nightmare set though, oh boy. Nightmare Mr Mime is a MASSIVE threat. Pokemon that normally check Mime, like Piloswine, RestTalk Mime, SToss Hypno, Ampharos, or Magneton, can be easily beaten by Sub Nightmare with good play and some luck. SToss Hypno seems like a very good check, and while it can certainly help, you can just Thief it with Haunter or Buzz and now Hypno can lose. Nightmare Mime hugely benefits from Thief Electabuzz and Thief / Explosion from Haunter. Nightmare Mime is a great set and certainly deserves more usage than it currently gets. The thing is innfuriating to fight. Thief + Fire Punch is ok, Thief is a great move in general and Fire Punch hits Magneton hard. Not a fan of RestTalk, Hypno is almost always better. Rest Mime also just thuds into Hypno, Magneton, and Ampharos unless it gets a ton of luck. Mime has a sizeable impact of team building in this tier, I have had to throw out a lot of squads because they are too Mime weak. Mime is not in A+ because of its poor physical defense. Like with Haunter, Mime often exacerbates a teams Scyther weakness. It also exacerbates weaknesses to Piloswine and such. Nightmare is certainly good, but it can be difficult to use.

Also FUCK Baton Pass Mr Mime. Mr Mime is the reason we should ban Baton Pass, not Scyther. Meditate, Curse, and Barrier pass stuff is really annoying.

#10:
10.png

Pursuit is a waste of an Electabuzz. Pursuit Electabuzz is decent and all, but the real money comes from 3 Attacks + Thief sets. 3 Attack Buzz is a hugely threatening special sweeper that has Thief to harm its checks for itself and its teammates. Electabuzz is powerful and outspeeds nearly all relevant Pokemon. Electric STAB hits the numerous Water and Flying types super effectively. I actually think both Thunder and Thunderbolt are fine on Electabuzz. I like Thunder more because it puts the most pressure on Hypno, but Thunderbolt still hits hard the the perfect accuracy is nice. Electabuzz is so good at using Thief because of its power and coverage. Hypno, Ampharos, or a Ground are often forced to take Thief, and these are the most valuable Pokemon to be stealing Leftovers from. Electabuzz ravages common mons like Slowbro, Gyarados, Qwilfish, Scyther, Feraligatr, and Haunter, and while Pokemon like Hypno or Nidoqueen can check it, they can lose to good prediction. The only hard counter is Ampharos, and again Ampharos hates losing Leftovers. Fire Punch is more reliable than Cross Chop because of its accuracy, but Cross Chop is definitely helpful when fighting Chansey nonsense. Hidden Power Grass should be considered if your opponent has high Quagsire usage. You need to be hitting Piloswine at least. Electabuzz even provides defensive utility; its a fine switch into Gyarados and Haunter. Electabuzz is also a great lead. I would not keep it in vs Hypno lead though, it can cripple Buzz with TWave. Scout it first and then Thief it. Pursuit Buzz should only be used on defensive teams that are very secure vs Grounds. Otherwise, you are asking to lose to Nidoqueen or Piloswine.

#11:

Granbull is overrated. Very, very overrated. It is not close to a top 3 Pokemon let alone top 1 like some claim. Granbulls "best" set (Curse + RestTalk) is easily walled and beaten by the Normal resist on every team. Granbull's ability to check Nidoqueen and Gyarados is nice, but its really annoying how it can't do anything offensively till the Normal resist on every team is dead, and a smart opponent isin't gonna let it go. Slowbro is not a hard counter, but Granbull still has a tough time beating it. Granbull is also super slow and has mediocre special defense. I have seen Granbull lose a lot of endgames it seemingly won, its like GSC NU Wigglytuff to me. You can drop Curse and use a move like HP Ground or Thunder on RestTalk sets to hit Normal resists, but dropping Curse makes it easy to trade hits with Granbull using Pokemon like Piloswine, Nidoqueen, Slowbro, and Blastoise. You are also worse vs Scyther, Pinsir, and opposing Curse Bull without Curse. Heal Bell sets are ok but they have the same issue as coverage RestTalk, except you can't even hurt the Normal resists. lol. Curse + HP Ground lacks any hard counters beyond Shuckle, but its speed and special defense make it difficult for it to get more than 1 or 2 KOs a lot of the time. Scyther or Pinsir are usually better. Curse + RestTalk Granbull just feels worse than Hypno a lot of the time. Hypno also checks Gyarados and Nidoqueen, except it also checks a bunch of strong special attackers, among other advantages. Granbull is still an influential Pokemon, but its far from the best Pokemon in the tier. Its just an A tier Pokemon.

#12:
12.png

Ampharos is a strange case. Ampharos is a really good Pokemon, but the prominence of Nidoqueen and competition from Hypno and to a lesser extent Lanturn seriously limits the amount of builds Ampharos is good on. The builds that Ampharos does work on, however, are amazing. The team of Piloswine / Ampharos / Blastoise / Gligar / Haunter / Qwilfish is in my opinion the best GSC UU team. The team is incredible defensively and has offensive power between the two Thief users, Screech Gligar, and Ampharos. Ampharos's stat spread is very solid, with it notably possesing 115 special attack. Ampharos's high special attack and STAB Thunder make it an offensive powerhouse, despite being a bulky Pokemon. Almost nothing wants to stomach Thunder from this thing. The tiers several Water and Flying types get destroyed by it, while Pokemon like Granbull, Pinsir, Haunter, and Mr Mime get 2HKOd. Even the bulky ass Hypno gets 3HKOd while dealing little to Ampharos in return. Defensively, Ampharos answers Pokemon like Gyarados, Slowbro, Mr Mime, Haunter, and Lanturn. The good matchup vs Gyarados and Slowbro makes Ampharos a great Piloswine partner. Ampharos is just a monster of a Pokemon when surrounded by the right teammates. Blastoise checks Nidoqueen and Piloswine while providing Rapid Spin support, Qwilfish's Spikes make Thunder even more difficult to switch into, and Gligar counters Nidoqueen, Ampharos's main enemy. As mentioned, Ampharos is not a Pokemon for every team. Throwing Ampharos onto an offense without the correct partners is asking to lose to Nidoqueen. Ampharos with the correct partners, though, is god tier. As for Fire Punch vs Hidden Power Water, it depends on the team. If you have a bulkier Ampharos squad with Blastoise AND Gligar, Fire Punch is better. If you go more aggresive and use, say, Gyarados over Blastoise, HP Water is better. Don't use HP Grass, the DVs are shit and Quagsire isin't that good anyway.

#13:
13.png

This Pokemon...no...this ASSHOLE is an obnoxious little shit. Gligar is an incredible Pokemon in GSC UU and it deserves all the respect and usage it has recently received. Originally, I had Blastoise and Magneton in the spots I have Ampharos and Magneton, but I swapped them because I feel Ampharos + Gligar teams are more effective than Blastoise / Magneton teams. Gligar is an excellent partner for Electric types Ampharos and Magneton. These Pokemon hate Nidoqueen, and Gligar dominates Nidoqueen. It is the best answer to Fire Blast Nidoqueen, being immune to Earthquake and Thunder while tanking Fire Blast. Gligar's immunity to Spikes make it difficult for Nidoqueen to wear it down, especially considering Fire Blast can miss and only has 8PP. Gligar is good at beating a lot of random less seen mons, like Curse or Drum Quagsire, Sandslash, and Victreebel. Gligar is also decent vs Electabuzz and Haunter since, funnily enough, it can block Thief by using no Leftovers itself. Thief is Gligar's best set because it really hurts the tiers Water types and Piloswine. Without Leftovers, Gyarados can't passively regain HP, while Blastoise and Slowbro become easier to break. While Gligar's attack is the lowest of any Ground type, Screech fixes that. Pokemon like Granbull, Hypno, and Blastoise get 2HKOd at -2. The several Electric and Poision types weak to Earthquake of course get 2HKOd regardless. Hidden Power Rock is better than Hidden Power Flying on this, 2HKOing Scyther is great as I have gone over. HP Rock also helps out vs Dodrio and Aerodactyl. Options like Counter and Toxic are appealing, but ultimatly too hard to fit. Gligar, like Ampharos, doesn't fit onto that many teams, but good Gligar teams are incredible.

#14:
14.png

Pinsir is a huge threat in GSC UU, though not on the same level as its brother Scyther. Its lower speed means you can actually outspeed it with Pokemon like Haunter, Mr Mime, and Dodrio, and its lack of a Spikes immunity is annoying. These make Pinsir easier to play around when compared to Scyther. But like... if Scyther is a 10 on the threat scale, Pinsir is still a 9 or something. Pinsir is just very good at breaking holes in the opponents team. You never like facing Pinsir; its pretty speedy, it has unresisted coverage, and it hits hard after an SD. Like Scyther, there's no common hard counters. The only counters are very niche defensive Pokemon like Crobat or Jumpluff. Pinsir's advantages over Scyther are actually defensive ones. Pinsir lacks Scyther's Ice weakness, giving it a far better Piloswine matchup. No other Pokemon is as good at taking advantage of a Resting Piloswine. You switch in on a Rest and that is a free ass SD. Pinsir is also not weak to Electric, so its not mortally afarid of taking Thunder from Magneton, Electabuzz, or Ampharos. Its also just 2x weak to Rock as opposed to 4x weak, so its much better against HP Rock Gligar and Ancient Power Quagsire. Pinsir, like Feraligatr is best used alongside another Piloswine check. You don't need it as much defensively, so you can get more out of Pinsir. Rock Throw is the best 4th move because it stops Scyther from setting up on you and destroying your team...90% of the time anyway. Protect is a cool option though, more Leftovers recovery is really nice. You can use Pinsir as just a wall breaker or a late game cleaner, it works well in both roles. Lemme tell ya, there is nothing scarier than clicking Rest with Piloswine when your team is battered and seeing Pinsir switch in.

A- Tier

#15:
15.png

Blastoise is the only viable user of Rapid Spin, which is a pretty big niche in a metagame where Spikes Qwilfish is almost mandatory. Qwilfish isin't an amazing matchup for Blastoise, seeing as it resists Surf and threatens with Curse boosted Sludge Bomb, but Blastoise Surf deals good chip damage to it. Its difficult to keep Spikes up vs Blastoise in longer games. Blastoise is also a fine Pokemon itself, being very bulky and having winning matchups vs both Nidoqueen and Piloswine. These factors make Blastoise required on stall teams, particularly ones that use Belly Drum Quagsire, and a common sight on Ampharos teams. Blastoise would be an A or maybe even A+ Pokemon if it wasn't for Scyther, who's a real pain in the ass for it. Scyther viciously punishes Rests from Blastoise, so Blastoise teams have to take anti Scyther measures. This prevents Blastoise from being used on more teams, particularly offenses. While Haunter is far from a consistent spin blocker, it bullies Resting Blastoise hard. Blastoise in general lacks the offensive power of Slowbro or Gyarados, who are usually better on offensive teams. Blastoise is pretty easy to wall with Pokemon like Slowbro, Hypno, Ampharos, or Gyarados, it doesn't make progress on its own. I have experimented with dropping Rest on Blastoise and using Earthquake + Zap Cannon, but this set is generally outclassed by Feraligatr. Make no mistake though, Blastoise is still quite good. On Ampharos Gligar teams especially it just sits there and stops you from making progress by removing Spikes. Helps that Blastoise can come in on common mons like Hypno, Slowbro, and Piloswine to pull a spin off. Being the best check to all Nidoqueen variants is really useful too. If Blastoise gets Spikes off when Qwilfish has been KOd, that is often times game over. Its just the passivity stops it from being used on as many teams as Slowbro or Gyarados.

#16:

As the only Steel type, Magneton brings a lot of role compression. Its the only Pokemon who resists Normal, Psychic, and Electric, giving it winning matchups vs a unique set of Pokemon; mono Granbull, Haunter, and Mr Mime. Also, remember when I talked about how strong Ampharos is? Yeah, well Magneton is the same except it has 5 extra special attack. Magneton's Thunder is THE STRONGEST special attack in the whole tier. It hits the majority of the tier incredibly hard. The tiers primary special tank, Hypno, stands no chance against Magneton since it gets outsped and 3HKOd. Magneton's role compression enables a lot of teams to function; putting it on your team fulfils several of the roles every team needs (Mono Bullcheck, Mime check). This makes Magneton good at enabling a lot of lower tier Pokemon to fit on teams. However, while Magneton's typing does give it useful resistances, it also saddles it with a crippling 4x Ground weakness. This is very unideal in a tier dominated by Nidoqueen, Piloswine, and physical attackers with HP Ground. Magneton is another Pokemon who suffers from the dominance of Scyther. Magneton doesn't let Scyther setup on it, but the Pokemon you need alongside Magneton often forces you into Scyther weak structures. This is because Magneton, like Ampharos, is trash vs Nidoqueen, making it difficult to fit onto teams. Its poor matchup vs HP Ground Granbull also contributes to this. Magneton's poor special defense is also an issue; While Ampharos comfortably eats Water moves from guys like Slowbro or Gyarados, Magneton takes a lot more from them. Magneton is an Electric type thats shaky vs Gyarados and Slowbro. Good Pokemon, but it feels kind of clunky in todays metagame.

#17:
17.png

I already made a post on this guy in this thread, read that for the rundown. Just gonna add that this Pokemon works best alongside another Piloswine check (Gyarados / Slowbro / Pinsir), it is much better when you don’t have to be careful with its health. This approach lets you get the most out of Feraligatr offensively. I really do recommend Feraligatr in todays metagame, shits good!

#18:
18.png

Lanturn is very similar to Ampharos, but its additional Water typing gives it the edge in certain matchups. Like Ampharos, Lanturn checks Pokemon like Gyarados, Slowbro, Mr Mime, and Haunter. Its even more of a counter to Slowbro and Gyarados because it resists Water. However, its worse stats and lack of an Electric resistance make it the less viable and more specific Electric type. Lanturn's significantly lower special attack makes it much harder for it to break Hypno, while its lack of an Electric resistance means it can't counter Pokemon like Electabuzz or Magneton. Lanturn also has the problem of being a Water type weak to Ground, meaning it can't check Nidoqueen or Piloswine. Its lower special attack means it isin't as good at pressuing Pokemon like Granbull or Pinsir, too. Nontheless, Lanturn is still a good Pokemon its own, and it has the advantage over Ampharos in certain matchups. Lanturn is much better against Nightmare Mr Mime, as both of its attacking moves break its sub, unlike HP Water from Ampharos or Magneton. Its STAB Surf also means Ground types can't bully it nearly as easily. These can come in handy on more aggresive teams with bulky Electrics. Lanturn is actually slightly bulkier than Ampharos, but that rarely comes into play. Again, Lanturn is a really good Pokemon on its own, but Ampharos is often better as an Electric type.

B+ Tier

Dodrio is fine. Its not a metagame super star, but it has a fine enough role in todays metagame. I think Dodrio faces a lot of competition with Scyther as an offensive Flying type, but Dodrio's more immediate power gives it a unique role. Dodrio is very strong, very fast, and has STAB Double-Edge. It outspeeds prominent fast mons like Haunter and Mr Mime, while Double Edge 2HKOs or 3HKOs basically everything. It also has STAB Drill Peck to 2HKO Scyther and Pinsir, making it an offensive check to the latter. Dodrio can revenge kill other mons like Haunter, Mime, and Gyarados too. Dodrio is more useful defensively than you might think. In addition to checking Pinsir, it checks Gligar. RestTalk Dodrio is also great at punishing Seismic Toss Hypno; Psychic and Seismic Toss don't 3HKO, so you can switch in and use Hypno as an offensive opportunity. Dodrio is more difficult to switch into than other Hypno punishers, like Piloswine, for common teams. Dodrio has its issues though. Slowbro, Moonlight Nidoqueen, and Magneton are all tricky matchups for it, while Aerodactyl and Omastar counter it. As mentioned earlier, it faces competition from Scyther as an offensive Flying type; it is more valuable to grab a free turn to SD with Scyther than a free turn to click Double Edge with Dodrio. Its also pretty frail and weak to Electric/Ice. RestTalk with Drill Peck is Dodrio's best set because it abuses SToss Hypno long term. HP Ground is bad because you give up 2HKOing Scyther and Pinsir and a secondary STAB when Sleep Talking. Thief or Flail sets defeat the point of Dodrio I think, would not use them in a serious game. Flail is very fun to fuck around with though...

#20:
20.png

I know this guy technically isin't in the tier yet, but its been tested in like 3 tours at this point and is almost certainly going to get unbanned soon. Aerodactyl isin't broken at all in GSC UU and while I still would prefer if we just banned Scyther, unbanning Aerodactyl is fine IG. Aerodactyl's main use is hard countering Scyther, who as I have mentioned over and over, is a bullshit Pokemon. Scyther makes a lot of Pokemon (I.E Blastoise or Magneton) less viable, so they can be paried with Aerodactyl to help with the Scyther problem. While Scyther can run Steel Wing, that takes up a valuable move slot so it isin't seen often. Beyond its ability to counter Scyther, Aerodactyl is an OK Pokemon. Aerodactyl reliably checks Pinsir and Dodrio, and can wall Granbull with certain sets. HP Rock and Earthquake are mandatory, and the last two moves can be a combination of Roar, Protect, Curse, or Toxic. Roar Aerodactyl is a decent phazer that can Roar out Curse Granbull, it works particularly well with Curse. Aerodactyl is so fast that it still outspeeds Pokemon like Hypno, Lanturn, Ampharos, and Piloswine after a Curse, which helps when breaking past Hypno in particular. Protect is in general great on Spikes immune Pokemon assuming they can fit it, it makes Aerodactyl more difficult to wear down. Aerodactyl still has a lot of flaws though. Its really difficult for it to break Pokemon like Slowbro, Blastoise, and Piloswine. Even Hypno can trade hits with it. Its also weak to Water, Ice, and Electric, so it can't switch in on that many Pokemon. Aerodactyl / Blastoise / Magneton teams seem really good, but they are often times passive and have to rely way too much on Nidoqueen for offense. Aerodactyl often exacerbates weaknesses to Pokemon like Gyarados, Feraligatr, Piloswine, and kinda Mr. Mime. It has made stall teams better imo, its like Crobat except it actually contributes to games. Certainly a cool mon for some teams, but nothing ground breaking. Scyther is still S with it around btw.

#21:
21.png

I don't think Quagsire is all that good. Yes, it does have a very good defensive typing, but its also super slow and not particularly strong. RestTalk Quagsire is really only needed on specific Magneton teams as a bandaid for multiple mons (Nidoqueen, Electrics), otherwise Nidoqueen or Piloswine are better. You can combine Quagsire into combinations like Hypno + Nidoqueen and be better off. RestTalk Quagsire is easy to trade hits with using Pokemon like Slowbro, Blastoise, Piloswine, Granbull, or Gyarados. Its also free entry for guys like Gligar, Feraligatr, Dodrio, and Pinsir. I think the Ice Beam set is awful; you can just sit on it with Gyarados and thaw lol. Ice Beam also means you can't 2HKO Scyther with a Rock move. Ancient Power or HP Rock is ok, but makes you worse vs Pokemon like Nidoqueen and Gligar. Sets slow nature also makes it vunerable to getting crit and then not having an oppurunity to Rest back up. Piloswine or Nidoqueen are just better on vast majority of teams. As for Belly Drum, its only good on defensive teams that really support it. Rapid Spin and Heal Bell support are basically mandatory. If supported well the set can definetly be a terror. I do hate how often it feels like you have to dodge a crit though lol...after a drum basically any crit will KO and I feel like you have to just stay in and risk it. Curse Quagsire is similar but worse, it lacks the immediate devastation of Drum, leaving you worse off against Slowbro and such. I am also low on defensive teams in general in this metagame.

#22:
22.png

Like Aerodactyl, I know Muk is not officially in GSC UU yet, but I played a tournament where it was unbanned so I will give my thoughts on it. I don't think Muk is that good in GSC UU. It was overused in UUSD and isin't that good. Yeah it has a really strong Explosion, but the way GSC UU is structured is hostile to Muk. It can't break Nidoqueen, Piloswine, Gligar, or Quagsire without booming, and its hit super effectively by all the Psychics. Haunter being as common as it is is also awful, it can make Muk worthless if you mispredict. Muk also suffers from awful 4MSS; there is a lot of mons you want to have coverage for but you can't fit all the moves you want. I don't know....if I wanted to use a physical breaker with limited defensive utility I would use Pinsir or Scyther over this. Muk is often stuck just trading one KO, while the bugs can destroy teams on their own. Stacking Muk alongside other physical breakers make you ass defensively. It is a great HO mon though, I can't deny that.

B Tier

#23:
23.png

Underrated. I think this is just on the cusp of being B+. Electrode faces a lot of competition with Electabuzz on non HO teams, but it has some advantages that make me prefer on some offenses. Its also the most important Pokemon on HO teams. Electrode gets Explosion, letting it blow through mons like Ampharos or Hypno. It also doesn't have to speed tie Scyther; you always outspeed and 2HKO and you can boom on it. If needed. Electrode can support Pokemon like Nidoqueen with Light Screen and boom on Gligar or Hypno to help it out. Electrode‘s boom is underused way to break teams. Like Electabuzz, Electrode zaps all the Water and Flying types and can switch into mons like Gyarados and Haunter. I have ran Hidden Power Fire on this recently to hit Magneton, since it otherwise counters you. Its a good mon on more aggressive teams because of its speed, boom, and ability to setup Screens. Electabuzz is better on a majority of teams though. Its stronger than Electrode and has much better coverage. Electrode can barely hurt Nidoqueen, Gligar, and Quagsire without exploding, which is a major flaw. As mentioned earlier, Electrode is THE HO mon. Those teams wouldn’t work without it imo. Electrode sets up screens, it keeps momentum with boom, and it stops you from losing to Scyther. A perfect Pokemon for those teams.

#24:
24.png

Also underrated. Sandslash is slept on and not nearly as bad as some say. Sandslash’s main problem is the fact that it’s difficult to fit on teams. Like most of the mons in B tier, Sandslash really needs the right team around it to be good, and there are few good Sandslash teams. If you pull it off though, Sandslash is pretty scary. Sandslash‘s EQ is just as strong as Piloswine’s, except Sandslash has Swords Dance. It also has a useful defensive profile for an SD mon. Rock Slide and good physical bulk helps you not lose to Scyther, and it can switch into Fire Blast Nidoqueen. Sandslash also barely cares about Aerodactyl and Crobat, unlike Scyther and Pinsir who hate them. After an SD, Sandslash 2HKOs nearly everything. Paralysis support from Pokemon like Hypno and Bellossom help get the most out of Sandslash. Substitute lets you dodge status and get SDs off. Sandslash can be hard to use though; its slow, its SpDef isn’t great, and it sucks vs Gligar / Blastoise / Gyarados / Feraligatr, unless your opponent lets you para them. I can’t say much about the RestTalk set as I have never tried to use / build with it.

#25:
25.png

Bellossom is whatever. Mono Grass typing is really helpful against certain Pokemon in this tier, but it also gives you weaknesses to Flying / Poison / Ice. The Flying weakness is really annoying in a tier where Scyther and Gyarados are dominant Pokemon. Bellossom also faces competition with other bulky mons like Lanturn and Hypno. Nonetheless, Bellossom can be really annoying in certain games. SD is Bellossom’s best set in my opinion, the mon is super passive without it. Bellossom answers a very unique set of Pokemon; Electabuzz, Feraligatr, HP Rock Gligar, Lanturn, HP Water Ampharos, and Quagsire all hate this thing. It can use them, as well as the very common SToss Hypno, as setup opportunity. It can spread paralysis for itself and its teammates with Stun Spore. There are some defensive teams that have little to no counterplay to an SD Bellossom. Its worse against offense teams though. The ubiquity of Qwilfish means nearly every team has one mon that annoys Bellossom greatly, while Gyarados, Scyther, Curse Granbull, Piloswine, and Fire Punch Ampharos are similarly annoying for SD Bellossom. Bellossom also hates status, a flaw you will encounter frequently because Bellossom is switching into Thunder from Lanturn / Ampharos / Electabuzz. Like Sandslash, you really need the right team around Bellossom for it to work.

#26:
26.png

OHKOing Nidoqueen or Piloswine with Counter Chansey is the greatest feeling one can have playing this tier, bar none. Aside from that, Chansey is mediocre. Chansey is very passive, and as a result only works on defensive teams. Chansey’s gargantuan SpDef lets you wall Pokemon like Slowbro, non CC Electabuzz, Nightmare Mime, and the Bulky Electrics. Its also a fine switch into Gyarados and Feraligatr if healthy. Counter is definitely my favourite Chansey set. Counter lets you obliterate unsuspecting Nidoqueen and Piloswine that try to waste Soft-Boiled PP. You can’t use Heal Bell with Counter, but you can just run Counter Chansey with Heal Bell Granbull. Counter Chansey can also run Thunder Wave last to cripple mons without Rest, in particular Scyther and Pinsir. TWave Chansey is also really good at supporting Drum Quagsire. Heal Bell Chansey I would only use on Shuckle stalls (assuming I ever run that crap) since you want Granbull to be running Curse there. Chansey is a victim of moveset illegalities really. If it could run Counter + Present, it would be much higher. As is, Chansey is extremely specific. If you aren’t using a defensive team, Hypno is just better.

#27:
27.png

Omastar is not very good. I was not that suprised to see Omastar only get used a single time in UUSD and GSC PL combined. Omastar would of been at the top of B before Aerodactyl dropped, but Aerodactyl is yet another Normal resist Omastar has to compete with. Haunter is better on offensive better than Omastar because of its speed, boom, and ability to spin block. Shuckle or Magneton are almost always better on defensive teams because they beat more Pokemon beyond Granbull. If you want a Normal resist that can go up against Scyther, Aerodactyl is better vs Scyther than Omastar. Omastar just has little value in todays metagame. Omastar has almost no good matchups beyond Granbull, whereas the other Normal resists do much more for their teams. It can't use its beefy special attack much because it can barely come in on anything. Even with its high Special attack Pokemon like Hypno, Blastoise, and Lanturn don't have an issue beating it. Omastar does have the best matchup vs HP Ground Granbull, but that set is less common these days and you can just run Slowbro lol. If anything, Thunder Granbull is more common with Aerodactyl allowed. When I use Omastar, I usually drop Rest and use Ancient Power + Thief on it. Ancient Power is nice because it deals a lot to Scyther and can't be weakened by Light Screen. Its still not that good though, Aerodactyl is right there if you want a Scyther bandaid.

B- Tier

Overrated as all hell. I really don't know how people can rank a hard stall exclusive Pokemon that does no damage and gives free entry to QWILFISH so high, let alone think its BROKEN!. Shuckle stall teams are not good if your opponent is good at this tier, they are noob slayers. Shuckle stalls are inevitably losing to Qwilfish and or hax. Its easy to break stall over time if you just keep Qwilfish and offensive Pokemon like Gyarados, Nidoqueen, Piloswine, or Feraligatr alive. Just giving entry to Qwilfish is so bad, and every team has a Water that can break you. In addition your only means of damaging the opponent is Toxic...in a tier where Rest is ubiquitous. Glad to see this things usage drop off, it was way overused in some previous tours.

Jumpluff is bad. Yeah it can be kinda annoying, but Its passivity and awkward typing make it tricky to fit onto teams and in battle its not that hard to neuter it. Jumpluff's best trait is annoying Scyther and Pinsir...but like we have Aerodactyl now. Aerodactyl also dicks over Scyther and actually deals damage. Bellossom also gives Pluff a lot of competition. The two mons are similar, but Bellossom actually poses a threat with SD. The combo of Bellossom and Aerodactyl does everything Jumpluff does except Bellossom is better defensively. Jumpluff's best way to threaten the opponent is Leech Seed, a mediocre move in GSC that is made worse by the fact that its hard to fit Qwilfish and Jumpluff on the same squad. Jumpluff gives up momentum and it lets a ton of Pokemon in. Pokemon like Hypno, Piloswine, Dodrio, and Ampharos can switch in and Rest on this. It also gets ruined by all status, especially paralysis. Building with Jumpluff exacterbates weaknesses to Gyarados, Piloswine, and Aerodactyl. Syntheis and Encore only have 8 PP, and Synthesis PP in particular runs out quick. Also, Encore fails against Sleep Talk. Ain't that great. I tried to use Jumpluff to enable Gyarados, since you can Leech Seed Pokemon like Hypno or Slowbro and then swap to Gyarados, but this strategy has a lot of problems. Before Aerodactyl I would of put it in B, but its an ass mon now. Don't use it.

A shadow of its former self. Slowking is just outclassed on 95% of teams. Hypno is better as a specially bulky Psychic, while Slowbro and Blastoise are better as Water types. Slowbro is much better because of its better matchup vs Granbull, Scyther, Pinsir, Piloswine, and Dodrio. You can actually use Slowbro as your sole Piloswine check. You can't use just Slowking for Piloswine, and that is a major problem. Hypno is also better than Slowking because its not weak to Electric, letting it actually check Pokemon like Mr Mime, Electabuzz, Haunter, and Lanturn. The only teams Slowking works on are those Magneton teams that use Slowking alongside Gyarados or Feraligatr. Slowking has a better Gyarados matchup than Slowbro, so sometimes they can use it. Yet, as someone with a lot of experience with these teams, I can say they are not that good. Slowbro is better than Slowking on these teams by the way lol...Slowking is still not very good against Gyarados. Slowking is not a bad Pokemon on its own, heck its pretty solid, but its super outclassed.

The last Pokemon I would consider UU, and its just barely on the cusp of it. Gone are the days where Agility Pass Girafarig was the worst Pokemon to give free turns to. The new full pass teams are much less dangerous and viable. I like the idea of using it as an Amnesia passer on hyper offense teams in theory, but its just not consistent. The BP teams that are best don't even need Girafarig imo. The Meditate Mime pass stuff is best, and you don't need Girafarig on that. Outside of BP the mon is outclassed. AOA sets are worse Mr Mime, while the Curse + Amnesia sets are outclassed by Scyther, Pinsir, and Granbull. It takes too many turns to get going imo. Girafarig is just a gimmick mon in the current metagame.

C Tier

Everything in here is not viable enough to be considered UU. This tier is ordered alphabetically, not by viability.

Before Aerodactyl this would of certainly ranked this as UU, but Aerodactyl has knocked this out of the metagame. Crobat's only use is countering Scyther and Pinsir, but Aerodactyl also does that while being better at making shit happen. Crobat's movepool sucks and its typing is equally bad. It gives entry to nearly every top Pokemon and hits like a pool noodle unless Wing Attack is super effective.

Another Baton Pass Pokemon. Like Girafarig, it is a gimmick. Growth Pass doesn't appeal to me at all, I would rather use SD or Meditate pass. An attack boosted Granbull, Nidoqueen, or Quagsire is more more dangerous than a +1 special attack Mime or whatever. Flareon is a worse standalone mon than, say, Scyther or Girafarig too. Its slow and Fire typing sucks in this tier.

#34:

Utter garbage. Rock / Water is not a good defensive typing, Ancient Power is not a good STAB, and 85 Speed is awkward for a Pokemon like Kabutops. Scyther, Pinsir, and even Sandslash are far better SD users than this. It may resist Normal but its only a pretend Granbull answer. The only way this consistently sweeps competently built teams is if it gets the Ancient Power boost. Yeah, don't use this crap.

#35:

Mr Mime is a better Psychic type. You can try stacking Kadabra alongside Mr Mime, but using two frail Psychic types makes your team garbage defensively. You are begging to lose to Scyther when you load this, and Electrics / Mime are similarly hard matchups. It still gets easily walled by Pokemon like Hypno and is super frail.

#36:
36.png

It may seem appealing, but its really bad. Growth is a bad sweeper that is nearly impossible to fit on a team. Mono Water as your only attacking type doesn't cut it here. You can't use it as your sole Water, so you need to pair it with another Water, likely Blastoise. Then you realise your team gets 6-0d by Scyther and Pinsir and sucks vs Gyarados, so you delete the team. Belly Drum is also worse Quagsire that gets outspeed by a ton of common mons, including ones with Thunder.

#37:
37.png

I actually think this is viable, but its largely a meme Pokemon. Its only good as a second Electric on Nightmare Mime offenses, and Haunter is often better in the slot you wanna run Raichu. I only used it in UUSD because the game didin't matter playoffs wise and 378's scout looked weak to the team I brought.

#38:
38.png

Its a bad matchup fish. Victreebel is almost impossible to fit and isin't even good when you fit it. Grass / Poision is one of the worst typings you can ask for here. It gets outsped and 2HKOd by a ton of common Pokemon. Yeah it can setup on Pokemon like Blastoise and HP Water Ampharos, but these are fairly frequently paired with counters like Gligar or Aerodactyl...so lol.

It sucks. I have been writing this for way too long so I no longer care to explain :yeah:

The D tier Pokemon don't deserve an explanation, they suck. Arcanine and Pikachu are unviable and you won't convince me otherwise.

That is a wrap. Hope you enjoyed my fucking GSC UU book LOL, props if you actually read the whole thing. I hope I was able to accuratly portray my vision of this tier. I think I understand this tier on a deep level, and that is why the post is so long. Except a big post like this on teams sometime soon :)

Wait are Muk and Aero officially unbanned?
Not officially yet. Aerodactyl has been tested in various tournaments (GSC PL IV, UUSD IV, GSC UU Open), while Muk was tested in UUSD IV and got its own spotlight ladder. We did this to see their impact on the metagame before pulling the trigger and unbanning them.

I discussed both in my VR post to give my thoughts on their impact in the tier. The consensus on both in the community is generally that they are healthy, and a vote to unban them or not officially will go up in the next few months.
