querencia - McMeghan
November 2014
McMeghan's querencia is one of the most successful ADV teams in recent years. It's a unique offensive team that combines strategies not often seen together. Two Choice Band users alongside Magneton are almost never seen with a Blissey lure + special sweeper, and yet here it's pulled off effortlessly. Tyranitar, whose ability Sand Stream is an offensive weapon itself as it denies many defensive Pokemon, such as Milotic, Suicune and Celebi, their precious Leftovers recovery, lures in physical walls and leaves a dent in them. Gengar can then switch into them and lure in the opponent's special wall, hopefully crippling or eliminating it. This in turn allows the fearsome and underrated offensive Starmie to clean up with ease thanks to its blazing speed, solid power and flawless coverage.
The team is very well-guarded against Spikes and the defensive teams that most often carry them, which were the face of the metagame at the time this team was built and most used. This allows the use of Swampert as a defensive backbone without worry about entry hazard damage. Magneton removes the two most common Spikers, which can also put a stop to Tyranitar and Flygon. Flygon really ties the team together with its Speed and ability to act as a backup check many dangerous threats, such as Electric-types, Tyranitar, and offensive Calm Mind users. The team is not flawless though. A well-played Dugtrio can trap key Pokemon without any threat of retaliation; however, the team has the tools to play around it and just about the entire ADV metagame. This team introduced offensive Starmie as a top tier threat to the ADV metagame, and McMeghan's success with it makes it deserving of a spot in our archive.
