Gen 7 Gen 7: BOSSNITE! The Most Dominant Stall in SM OU (1900+ elo, 92+ GXE, 1-0 in SPL)

Bossnite Stall

Bossnite, the pokemon that has sat on the entire tier in the last year with no regard for what's in front of it. The linchpin of the most overwhelmingly dominant SM stall. Smashing ladder for a nine month span, constantly getting 90+ GXE and #1 ranks by multiple players. Undefeated in tournament play which includes Santu and Empo in Masters and then got a 6-0 in its SPL debut. The SM tier will see "BOSSNITE!" countless times more as it continues its unstoppable wrath. While Bossnite is the best of the best, it's only one pokemon, what makes up the broken Bossnite stall team?

  • Alternative option: Samuel Norton, who got 12345 on ladder at one point with Bossnite stall, used a max defense impish set.
Basic Summary
  • Ground+ice coverage and decent PP count creates many opportunties to sweep and revenge kill at times too. Dragon dance provides +1 attack and speed, allowing for sweeps to be possible. Roost is there for reliable recovery and wall out opponents. Leftovers is there to maintain multiscale and enable Bossnite as a legitimate wall. Intact multiscale also lets Bossnite have many opportunities to set up and sweep even when it seems unlikely.

Basic Summary
  • Prankster lets Sableye get a quick wisp off against many threatening physical attackers early on like Chomp, Lando T and Mmaw. Magic bounce is a core component of the hazard war along with annoying stall breaking tactics like taunt. Knock off removes items, a critical move for pokemon who rely on leftovers. Recover heals MSab and let it last in battle. Protect lets MSab get magic bounce immediately and scout out moves.

Basic Summary
  • It's the cleric for this stall with aromatherapy, allowing freedom of the other pokemon to take status in extange to create progress. It also status absorbs with natural cure. Thunder wave is important to cripple a vast number of pokemon like Magearna, Tapu Lele, Torn T and many others, a generally great move. Thunder wave also enables some of the most keyboard smashing moments with Bossnite clicking DD+roost without care on neary anything para'd. Seismic toss provides consistent damage and soft boiled provides the recovery needed to wall out opponents.

Seismitoad (Seis Nortoad)

  • Water absorb: Heals 1/4 HP every time a water move is used against it

  • Earthquake: 100 BP, 100 Acc, ground move, 16 PP

  • Stealth Rocks: Hurts foe on switch-in, damage based off rock type match-up
EVs/IVs/Nature
  • 244 HP: Given the investment of defense and special defense, best investment to maximize bulk
  • 36 Defense: Takes Mmaw's +2 sucker punch from full HP
  • 216+ SpeDef: Maximizes ability to absorb special hits
  • 12 Speed: Outspeed no speed Mega Scizor and by extention most Mega Mawile
  • Nature: Careful (+Spedef, -Spa), Seismitoad's speed is wanted, its ability to take special hits critical and earthquake is much stronger than earth power, so dropping some SpA with careful nature makes most sense.
  • IVs: All max
Basic Summary
  • Sets rocks, blocks momentum, annoys all switch-ins, forces trades when needed. STAB Earthquake is strong enough to make ground weak pokemon second-guess staying in. Scald has a 30% chance to burn and chips water weak pokemon well. Rocks are to punish swaps and toxic is to force progress against as much as possible along with trade-ability. Water absorb lets Toad swap into scalds any time it wants along with other water moves, great for its teammates.

Skarmory (Praise)

Basic Summary
  • Own the hazard war and block progress of many lethal physical breakers like Kartana and Landorus T. With spikes, you punish swaps, and with defog, you remove hazards to let teammates swap around much more freely. Whirlwind can be used in many ways. With spikes, you can force damage, but whirlwind can also be used to phase out set-up sweepers. Roost is there for much needed reliable recovery. Helmet lets Skarmory force damage and punish u-turn/spin.

Basic Summary
  • Block set-up sweepers from running over the other pokemon via unaware, provide critical wishes to teammates, particularly Seismitoad, and be another set-up pokemon and apply pressure. Moonblast is consistent+strong damage and calm mind makes Clefable a threatening set-up sweeper. Protect scouts, lets Clefable use leftovers to heal out of certain damage rolls and safely get wishes up for itself. Wish is critical to heal itself and teammates to continue the stalling chain.

  • Before the game, map out what assignments are to be taken defensively and in the hazard war. Once you do that, you can determine where volatility exist, where you consistently shut down your opponent positionally and where potential set-up sweep opportunities exist.
  • While there is a lethal dragon dance set-up pokemon, the primary purpose of this team is to stall still. If you believe you can successfully wall out your opponent on preview, then that's the route you should take. If not, the generally next best option is to find a way for Bossnite or Clefable to sweep. Use the other pieces to hold off attackers long enough to position a sweep for one of them.
  • When playing the hazard war, the main goal is to deny hazards and put them up yourself. Toxic spikes must be kept in mind as there is no toxic spikes absorber and 4 pokemon are toxic spikes vulnerable. Each match-up will provide different lines to play depending on teammates, but generally, you need to deny them from going up. With the other hazards, also generally rather deny. Sometimes, it's better to trade hazards as some match-ups are quickly overwhelmed by spikes+rocks or it's a last resort when hazard denial is not possible.
  • For threats that are difficult to wall like strong physical ice attackers, Tapu Lele, SD Zard X and TG Manaphy under rain, you will have to outplay them. Bait attacks that are favorable to you, find ways to status them if possible and make smart trades.
  • Protect is a powerful tool in general and a great way to scout the opponent, use it. The more information you can gather, the easier it is to find what gameplan fits best.

  • Zard X, status it, use Clefable's wish+protect combo to hold off its attacks, keep hazards. At times, depending on set, situation and opponent, you might want to use Skarmory's helmet+health to force recoil damage.
  • Clefable, t-wave with Chansey and knock with MSab is the ultimate goal. Once knocked, EQs and Stosses become far more threatening. Once t-waved, many of the pokemon can now beat Clefable 1v1. Most are simple to face overall, but if you face moonblast+SR, it's quite a pain to deal with. Be persistent at punishing Clefable switching in and you'll have to be willing to play with some rng via para'd Skarm at times. You might need to trade hazards and force defog or spin from the opponent. Clefable is pressured by Bossnite indirectly at all times, so a Clefable user will want to keep it near full to properly check Bossnite. Use that to your advantage when pressuring Clefable and if the opponent is careless, push the advantage with a well timed Bossnite DD and take out Clefable. Ice punch spam on switch to potentially freeze Clefable is another way to abuse Bossnite's ability to force Clefable in. Get 10 or more ice punches off and you'll have over 50% odds at freeze into DD without a thawed Clef the next turn.
  • Magearna, non-pain split variants aren't too much of a hassle. Against pain split variants, you'll need to either fire off enough earthquakes to KO or get Chansey in to t-wave it. Once para'd, Chansey+Clefable+Seismitoad is very difficult for Gear to beat.
  • MDiancie, threaten with Seismitoad early on or pp stall with Skarmory depending on what you think the set is. In the case of using Skarmory, yes, you will likely have to spike sometimes on MDiancie, but in time, the MDiancie user will realize they can't stay in forever. Sub endeavor sets will opt for diamond storm at times, so in some funny cases, MSab can check MDiancie. How one uses MDiancie and team composition is a tell if they are a set that lacks moonblast.
  • Mold Breaker SR Drill, wisp/knock it, find ways to bring in Skarmory for defog if possible. Some Drill teams won't allow for defog to happen without losing. In these situations, spike stack and force a Skarmory vs Drill interaction as often as possible. Don't let Skarmory get knocked for this strategy to work.
  • SD rocks Garchomp/Lando T, Wisp them, use Skarmory to hold off their attacks. Find short term ways to trade hazards and if possible then defog again. If not, hazard stack them.
  • SR u-turn Gliscor, deny hazards when you can and put them up often. To exploit this Gliscor set, you'll need Bossnite to pressure with ice punch/dd sweeping upside and punish Gliscor setting SR.
  • Kartana, use Skarmory as the primary check. Find ways to status it and get spikes up since Kartana will normally have knock off, removing rocky helmet. If fightium Z, Skarmory will likely end up as fodder later, so Bossnite/Clefable become the swap ins depending on match-up/situation.
  • Magnezone, Map out how taking Skarmory away impacts the interactions and plan accordingly. Don't be too afraid to use Skarmory though, it is still a Skarmory. A baited Zone swap in against Toad can punish most opponents consistently as Toad is great at punishing swaps.
  • Mmaw, Force hazard, helm chip, status and keeping it within EQ range of Bossnite/Seismitoad. You will likely lose a pokemon.
  • Manaphy, bait z into Seismitoad and then play unaware Clefable mindfully to hold off its attacks. It's playable, but you will have to outplay the opponent.
  • Serperior, Bossnite is a great check to leaf storm, but sub-seed sets are incredibly obnoxious. For these scenarios, deny its entry for free with status and stalling leaf storm/leech seed.
  • Mega Swampert, force helmet chip damage from Skarmory, don't let Skarmory get knocked. Ideally, you bait some waterfalls into Seismitoad too and limit the rain turns. You will have to hope untimely flinches don't end Skarmory.
  • Mega Tyranitar, status it, keep Skarmory away from 2hko range, try laying down hazards to chip it if possible.
  • Tapu Fini, knocking it with MSab will make it much easier to deal with. Force seismic toss damage from Chansey and EQs from Toad to chip down Fini. Use the threat of status and/or hazards to continue the assult on Tapu Fini directly and getting up hazards is ideal.
  • Tapu Lele, will require a read on preview for its set. If Lele isn't specs or LO moonblast, MSab can be used to fire off a wisp to put Lele on a timer. If Chansey can get a t-wave off, then Clefable wish+tect cycles turns into a more reliable out as Lele w/o scarf is slower. Using Seismitoad as a trade piece is also reasonable to get toxic and/or eqs off to limit Lele's impact.
  • Taunt Tornadus T, Use MSab as the primary check to eat hurricanes and block taunts. Seismitoad, depending on match-up, can be used as a trade piece. A well positioned Seismitoad can force toxic on Tornadus T as most Tornadus T are used as the primary defog user.
  • CB Victini, use protect, rocks and time up Bossnite swap ins correctly.
  • MHera, unaware Clefable can hold it off, but it needs to be kept at full to do so.
  • Hoopa U, status trade, scout, constantly chip with hazards. Take note that Clefable is not a great switch in due to hyperspace fury going through protect.
  • Knock off MVenusaur, use MSab+aroma support, backup option is letting Chansey or Bossnite get knocked.
  • Weavile, scout with protect, constantly annoy with hazards, status and keeping pokemon out of icicle crash range.
  • Kyurem B, if worst comes to worst, Toad will force a z as if it doesn't z, Toad will get a toxic off and Clefable stalls. Ideally, z is baited into protect or a smart sack. Once z is used, it's far less threatening.
  • Bisharp, constantly annoy it with potential status, chip damage and getting it into ranges of EQ from Bossnite.
  • LO Terrakion, stall its LO, outplay and deny easy entry with status. If it misses stone edge, great, if not, be prepared to make sacks if you can't outplay.
  • Ditto, do not knock it and use hazards+status to constantly annoy it. Without regenerator to steal, Ditto will be forced to click recovery and hazard war moves often, take advantage of those turns.
  • T-Spikes Toxapex, generally, MSab to block it often, trade at least knock for potential scald burn, sometimes wisp too. You'll have to outplay Toxapex with timely swaps into teammates. Force it to use recover and find ways to status it. You might even need to let t-spikes go up once in a while depending on Toxapex's teammates. Well timed Skarmory defogs are needed too as 32 PP of Toxapex's t-spikes and likely 48 PP of haze means sitting there with MSab will not work in a vacuum.
  • Surprise grass coverage, since these are surprise moves, the game plan will involve more Chansey+Skarmory and likely makes the game plan turn into a Bossnite or Clefable sweep. If you want to scout potential grass coverage, use tactics to bait out those potential moves and go from there.

When I was first making this team, it was with a flurry of ideas and I was willing to build with anything. Always trying to find new inspriations for builds and go from there no matter how silly. Then, a comment from Proftreez had me lasered in on a new build idea. Trees (Proftreez), one who learn the ways of stall from the best SM staller ever in Primal Unova, said that stall was no longer a solid option in SM OU, hardly functional. Too passive and the tier punishes that constantly in too many ways to make stall hyper consistent. A warning was even given on how me attempting to make stall will likely end up with nothing great as a result. I was ready for the challenge though, a cat with nine lives and was ready to use them all to make a good stall team. Firstly, there were the requirements that Trees layed out.
  • Heal bell
  • Anti-set up/stall breaker
  • Hazard control
  • Regenerator
  • Physdef wall
  • Probably Chansey
Then I started training in the ways of stall, using old Primal Unova and Trees' stalls. Shit talked opponents obnoxiously, walled them out with my skillfully used Chansey and bombing away with well timed z moves from defog Zapdos, it was a lot of fun. One thing kept popping up however, all those teams were slow and had a hard time repositioning against certain threats because of it. The offensive firepower in a wall with some speed was the ideal, so me and Trees worked on ideas to fix this issue.

Kyurem Black was first up, a fat dragon with decent speed and plenty of power. It did not work out, wasn't a consistent wall and wasn't that threatening once z move was used up. MAero was next, but it too failed as it wasn't a wall and it gave up MSab's magic bounce, something extremely hard to replace in the hazard war. Ran into wall after wall, no end in sight, my lives were all used up and I was a zombie cat, ready to quit on this stall idea. Yet, with all hope lost, I realized that one of my failed sun builds had a potential answer; DD roost Dragonite. From the experience with SS, its obnoxious to break with lots of bulk investment and made Dragonite a legitimate wall. That monster with heal bell support, great hazard control and walls to let it pick when to set up seemed like it would synergize well with stall. With my experiences using MDiancie+Dragonite, I felt magic bounce support fit best with Dragonite, so MSab was a must. Since it's stall, there's a Chansey too. That left 3 slots to experiment with for the build.

I wanted Chansey to not be the rocker, instead being a status+cleric slot as I didn't like rocks Chansey. From the ladder sessions using Treeman builds, Seismitoad was something I was quickly falling in love with and felt comfortable using it as a rocker. It took 0 from scalds, fantastic volt switch blocker, annoyed everything switching in with a wide variety of moves and it provided outs against a ton of crazy stall break options like Manaphy (water z absorb), Heatran (more flexability for MSab) and sand. Skarmory was the other pokemon that I enjoyed using and especially with Seis. They share no weaknesses, resist nearly every type together, provided spikes+rocks and could swap in and out consistently. Given that one of the stalls I used from the stall lord Primal Unova themselves didn't use regenerator, I was willing to break a rule to try this out. MSab, Chansey, Dnite, Skarm and Seis, the last slot was quite clear that it was unaware Clefable. Dark resist, provided wish support and another set-up pokemon to add even more offensive pressure with Dragonite. All pokemon I felt comfortable with, so I started grinding ladder games. The team stormed through ladder as it quickly got 1800's without much resistance.

I became distracted with other team builds, so I didn't think too much of it when I forked over the team to curious ladderers. I kept laddering with that six and slowly realized that it was a broken six that owned every team and got #1 on SoP C&C with it. Dragonite was unfair once it slapped on ice punch, nothing could stop it and "Bossnite" was born. One of those curious ladderers that asked for the build was none other than Samuel Norton. At the time, they were ~87 GXE and spammed stuff like Mmaw+zone sand, but then they spammed Bossnite relentlessly. What transpired past this is nothing short of the most dominate SM OU ladder team run in 2023 (Santu and probably Empo used it too for #1 rank, but those screenshots aren't there :/). Due to the replay deletion situation happening, I don't have replays from S Norton's laddering with Bossnite. However, ask anyone who laddered regularly on SM in the last 9 months, they'll tell you about S Norton laddering with Bossnite.

One of my #1 peaks, December 21st, 2023

Quickly, I knew that I needed to keep a lid on this as a fire has broken out. If I wanted to use it in tournament play w/o being cteamed, I had to put it out and frame Trees. What was originally a funny stall idea has now become the most feared team on ladder. I felt bad, I started a fire that I didn't intend to, but I couldn't help but admire the destruction Bossnite was causing. At least it was stuck on ladder, no tournament use yet. Then, I saw Empo using it in Masters qualifiers. Along with the question of "how did they get that team anyways", it was a sign that there was no stopping Bossnite from spreading. Not long after that, Santu was using it in Masters too in Top 16 (toxic Chansey isn't it though...). I saw how this will end, team was going to inevitably be spammed and leak into tournament play even more. I had to use it soon, give Bossnite a signature win before people realize its me who made it. Unfortunately, I got eliminated in Masters sooner than I expected, so it was on to SPL to do so.

It was week 1 of SPL, my first team tour battle ever and I was against PZZ. I felt quite confident that it was finally time for Bossnite to be revealed and stomp on whatever was brought, the secret wouldn't be able to last much longer anyways. Once in the game, looking at our teams on preview, I felt good about my match-up. Gliscor, MLatios, Koko, Toxapex and Kartana all immediately lose to +1 Bossnite while the incredibly useful Celesteela lost 1v1 via dd+roost. I felt that as long as Bossnite could get the right conditions, nothing stopped it from sweeping. After a long dance of pivoting around, I finally got rocks+spikes up against a chipped up opponent and the free DD against u-turn rocks Gliscor. The Bossnite "check" Celesteela came in, Bossnite DD+roost spammed without care and then 6-0'd. That became my favorite moment playing pokemon, pure joy. I hope that someone who uses this team can get the same enjoyment sweeping with Bossnite too.

Proftreez, thank you for teaching me the ways of SM stall and helping me in countless others ways too.

My name is Zaza Bitchulia. I live at 308 Seismitoad Lane, Top 5, Gen 7 OU, 1850. This is my confession. If you're reading this post, I'm probably locked– muted by my brother-in-law, Proftreez. Trees has been building a stall empire for over a year now, and using me as his chemist. Shortly after April last year, he asked that I use my chemistry knowledge to build stall teams, which he would then give to connections that he made through his career with the SM Community. I was... astounded. I... I always thought Proftreez was a very moral man, and I was particularly vulnerable at the time – something he knew and took advantage of. I was reeling from a Round 6 loss in SM Cup that was poised to bankrupt my ELO. Proftreez took me in on a ride-along and showed me just how much GXE even a small stall operation could make. And I was weak. I didn't want my ladder rank to go into decay, so I agreed. Proftreez had a partner, a businessman named S Norton. Trees sold me into servitude to this man. And when I tried to quit, Norton threatened my ladder rank. I didn't know where to turn. Eventually, Trees and Norton had a falling-out. Things escalated. Norton was able to arrange – uh, I guess... I guess you call it "ladder decay" – on Proftreez, and failed, but Trees was seriously fed up. And I wound up boosting his ladder rank, which amounted to a little over 1850 ELO. Upon recovery, Proftreez was bent on revenge. Working with a man named Skypenguin, he plotted to dethrone S Norton. The team that he used was built by me, and he gave me no option in it. I have often contemplated quitting, but I'm a coward. I wanted to go to the smogon mods, but I was frightened. Proftreez had risen to become SM Council leader . To keep me in line, he took my teams. For three months, he kept them. My friends had no idea of my criminal activities, and were horrified to learn what I had done. I was in hell. I hated myself for what I had brought upon the Gen 7 Ladder. Recently, I tried once again to quit, and in response, he gave me this. [Zaza points to the bruise on his ELO left by Proftreez with "KyuB Stall".] I can't take this anymore. I live in fear every day that Proftreez will ban me, or worse, delete my builder. All I could think to do was to make this post and hope that the world will finally see this man for what he really is.
 
In all seriousness, this team is amazing. I've played it countless times now (thanks norton lol) and it shocks me every time just how consistent it is.

Creating a new stall team is one thing, but creating a stall team this tenacious and this consistent while incorporating mons I have NEVER seen on stall before is true madman territory. Bossnite himself in particular still blows my mind in how it complements Skarm as a secondary check to many physical attackers and ground types in the Magnezone MU. Unaware CM clef as well was something I had only seen as a random set that autowins by someone in 1400s, so seeing it on a team this strong was both very cool and very VERY annoying. Seismitoad getting its flowers recently is awesome too. If it was substituted for Gastrodon, the loss of speed and the rocks moveslot elsewhere would hurt the team a lot.
Its weak MUs are hard, but unlike many other stall teams, it has multiple setup sweepers that can even use their setup defensively.

This is the kind of Stalls I miss in Gen 8 and 9, it has actual win condition other than PP Stalling or Hazard flooding. The one weakness I see is SD + Thunder Punch Mega Mawile, but most Volcaronaless Stalls are weak to it anyway, so just outplay your opponent or pray he misses Play Rough. Maybe put Counter instead of Spikes or Whirlwind on Skarm, but it will have an opportunity cost. Other than that, cool team, congrats.

On a more serious note, this team is an absolute triumph. You've redefined the set boundaries of a dying style, and managed to elevate it to levels of dominance I genuinely don't think can be replicated. I am confounded by how consistently this team performs, and even more dumbfounded by how you somehow managed to construct it. Nothing quite matches the despair you feel when BOSSNITE begins to set up for a sweep, and utilizing the defensive profile of Dragonite as a catch-all check that manages to defensively complement traditional stall centerpieces is a stroke of fucking genius. Managing to then identify its pairing with Seismitoad on a stall structure of all things is nothing short of fucking masterful; alter a single slot and the efficacy of the team absolutely collapses. A crackhouse configuration emblematic of its madman creator, I look forward to seeing the heights you will reach. Kudos my friend-
