I think Zamazenta is not broken and could be freed, but I personally wasn't a huge fan of the way the "meta" plays around it. Demanding interactions is healthy imo, but the way speed control changes in response was not enjoyable to me. I think Trick Room wasn't explored enough.
Howl is a strong set, but Para's AV set felt much more oppressive; they can obviously both exist, but options like Howl, Helping Hand, Coaching, and Wide Guard are valuable. Weather and Psyspam are top-tier. Would love to see how bulkier/slower team fares.
I used these three teams; the weather ones are definitely better than the Pizza Party team. Kyube is too slow for the Zama meta.

I’m out and the tour is over so i may as well post my zamazenta teams + my opinion on zama:

As for what i think about it, i think zamazenta is definitely broken. Zamazenta’s stats are the perfect balance between speed power and bulk, at least in this tier. This not only gives it the versatility to run a myriad of different sets, even more so than other similar pokemon such as kyub or fini, but it also makes all of its sets (well, almost all of them) strikingly good independently of each other, the most prominent ones in my opinion ranging from high t2 to second best pokemon in t1. Not only that, but you can’t reliably tell what set zama is running on preview a lot of times like you can with other pokemon with a lot of sets, and if you guess wrong you can outright lose the game or risk giving your opponent a ton of momentum, making the rest of the game significantly harder for you. Not that there’s much consistent counterplay to zama anyway, most of it is just psyspam or stuff that can burn it and its physical partners, like mew. Other than that youre kinda fucked lol. Most if not all teams used this tournament either feature zamazenta or are psyspam (or both, did i mention this pokemon fits on basically every team style?) and restricting the variety of teams that can be used in such a way is in my opinion quite unhealthy. Though, regardless of whether i think zamazenta is balanced or not, i had a ton of fun playing and building in this format. I honestly probably enjoyed it more than standard dou. Now, if zama was actually freed and this meta replaced standard dou, i would probably be pretty upset, but it was fun as a sort of “what if?” meta.

Anyway, thats enough of that, lets get into my teams for this format:

:zamazenta: :rillaboom: :heatran: :mew: :genesect: :tapu fini:
https://pokepast.es/c39629101dfdb769

This is a super strong balance team featuring choice band zamazenta. This team feels great to pilot, it has pretty much everything i would want from a balance team. It has clear wincons, good matchups into most popular teams, immediate damage and speed, you name it. Usually my plan with this team was to use zamazenta and genesect to break rilla and kyub for fini so it could endgame with calm mind, but in most of my games i ended up using fini mid game and cleaning with zama and gene late game much more often. Im not complaining, being in q position where you can just clean up with your choiced mons in the back feels great. This team felt a little weak to howl zama in testing but is overall a great team that i actually never dropped a game with, which is pretty cool :D

:tapu lele: :necrozma: :volcanion: :amoonguss: :pheromosa: :naganadel:
https://pokepast.es/4864b1934ba917a9

I remember throwing this together during my lunch break at work and it’s actually really fucking good. Its pretty much standard psyspam but i made some changes so that its more suited for a zamazenta meta. Pheromosa is an offensive lando check and provides speed control with speed swap, so i chose it over urshifu here. I made lele scarf to outspeed and ohko zama with psychic and it has focus blast to hit p2 and steela (it doesnt ohko either of them but does good enough damage that they can be chipped into range easily enough) amoonguss is eject button because regen pivot is busted and shuca volcanion can sponge a hit from lando and ohko back with steam eruption, which ended up coming in clutch a ton in my test games and actual tournament games. I really like this team, i would 100% recommend giving it a try, even in base dou without zama

I built this because i really wanted to try howl zama, and its solid on paper. Howl zama + steels like metagross is great bc metagross beats psyspam and zamazenta beats lando and tran. Band zygarde helps with the matchups vs fire/steels and kyub is the main wincon with rilla and mew as support. I never tested this and only brought it once though. I didn’t even win in the game i did bring it bc i played the tram super poorly (probably because i didnt test it at all) still thought i’d include it though bc it seems solid

Alr thats everything. Overall this was super fun, i think i did a pretty good job. I did lose in the quarterfinals, wouldve liked to get farther but im not mad about losing to madaraaa at all, he’s a great player. Congrats to singlethunder for winning too!
