Ferrothorn's great typing makes it one of the best special tanks in the tier, checking some of the most prominent special attackers, mostly Tapu Koko. Spikes is the main appeal of its kit, as Ferrothorn is bulky enough to set up Spikes while taking minimal damage. Stealth Rock can still be run when Ferrothorn is the team's only entry hazard setter; however, in general Spikes is more valuable due to its limited access. Leech Seed is its main recovery option and weakens foes. Power Whip nails Water-types Ferrothorn is supposed to switch in on, like Tapu Fini and Gastrodon. Ferrothorn's last moveslot is flexible: Knock Off is a great option to threaten Pokemon like Ho-Oh and Victini, Thunder Wave supports its slower teammates while also dissuading setup, and Gyro Ball heavily damages fast offensive switch-ins like Mewtwo and Galarian Moltres. Ferrothorn can also use Protect to get extra recovery from Leftovers and Leech Seed, or Toxic to debilitate switch-ins like Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Volcarona. Leftovers is used to give Ferrothorn more longevity, especially since it lacks a reliable recovery move. Gyro Ball Ferrothorn runs minimum Speed EVs and IVs to maximize its damage output.

Ferrothorn fits best on bulky offense and balance teams, supporting the team with constant Spikes chip damage and checking several good special attackers such as Tapu Koko and Nihilego. Most gods synergize well with Ferrothorn and substantially raise its HP, although Ho-Oh deserves a special mention. Ferrothorn deals with foes such as Nihilego and Tapu Koko for Ho-Oh, while Ho-Oh deals with Fighting- and Fire-types such as Volcarona, Heatran, and Pheromosa for Ferrothorn. Most wallbreakers in the tier appreciate Spikes, notably Weavile, Tapu Koko, and Zygarde-10%. Landorus-T and Clefable also make solid partners as both tank Fighting-type attacks and use Stealth Rock, allowing Ferrothorn to freely run Spikes. Clefable also doesn't mind taking Knock Off, which cuts into Ferrothorn's longevity. Fire-types like Victini, Blacephalon, and Heatran can OHKO Ferrothorn, making Water-types like Vaporeon, Slowking, and Gastrodon good partners. Teammates like Choice Scarf Tapu Fini to deal with foes that can boost past Ferrothorn's bulk, like Rayquaza and Galarian Moltres.

[SET COMMENTS]
Ferrothorn can use a physically defensive set with its great Defense stat and Iron Barbs to punish contact physical attacks like U-turn from Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Rillaboom, Surging Strikes from Urshifu-R, and Triple Axel from Weavile. It still switches into foes that specially defensive Ferrothorn can handle such as Tapu Koko, but less reliably. Its main appeal is using Spikes to chip down its teammates's checks. Stealth Rock is an option for Spikes-immune foes like Skarmory, Landorus-T, and Rotom-W, but only if no other teammate can fit it. Leech Seed chips down the foe and provides a way of recovery. Power Whip lets Ferrothorn hit foes it is supposed to check like Tapu Fini, Gastrodon, and Tyranitar. Body Press is useful to hit Steel-types like Heatran, Zamazenta-C, Magnezone, and opposing Ferrothorn.

Ferrothorn has a bunch of options for its last move. Knock Off can be used to bother the likes of Celesteela, Yveltal, Zapdos, and Rotom-H, making the latter three very susceptible to Stealth Rock. Iron Defense increases its already great physical bulk and also the damage output of Body Press, preventing dangerous Pokemon with setup, notably Necrozma-DM, from muscling through. Thunder Wave debilitates offensive switch-ins like Buzzwole, Kartana, and Galarian Moltres. Gyro Ball can also be used to heavily damage fast foes like Kyurem-W and Pheromosa. Protect can give Ferrothorn a free turn to recover some HP using Leech Seed and Leftovers and scout for Choice item users. Toxic damages switch-ins like Volcarona and Yveltal. Ferrothorn prefers Leftovers as its item due to lacking any sort of reliable recovery, but Rocky Helmet can be used to focus on punishing physical attackers in shorter games. If Gyro Ball is used, minimum Speed EVs and IVs make it hit as hard as possible.

Ferrothorn is best used on bulky offense and balance teams. Many teammates appreciate its Spikes chipping defensive foes, and most gods can bolster Ferrothorn's bulk with an HP donation. Rayquazaespecially appreciates Spikes to wallbreak, and it switches into Fire- and Fighting-types like Volcanion, Victini, and Urshifu-R while keeping offensive pressure. Slowbro is also a great teammate to take a lot of Fire- and Fighting-type attacks while keeping momentum with Future Sight and Teleport. Similarly, Landorus-T not only covers Fighting-types and can pivot, but also allows Ferrothorn to freely run Spikes with its Stealth Rock. Teammates with Defiant, most notably Galarian Zapdos, also like Spikes because they heavily punish Defog attempts. As Ferrothorn doesn't like losing its Leftovers, having a teammate that doesn't mind taking Knock Off like Tapu Koko or Clefable is a good idea.

Chople Berry is an option Leftovers to check Pheromosa, Zamazenta-C, and Buzzwole in an emergency, debilitating with Thunder Wave.

Checks and Counters
=====================
**Fire-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Ferrothorn's 4x weakness to Fire makes it really vulnerable to Victini, Ho-Oh, Heatran, and Blacephalon. Mewtwo, Galarian Slowking, Kyurem-W, Rayquaza, and Groudon can also bring Fire-type attacks, making Ferrothorn unable to answer them, although they don't like Thunder Wave or Toxic.

**Fighting-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Ferrothorn's other vulnerability is Fighting, leaving it unable to wall Pokemon like Zamazenta-C and Fighting-type coverage moves from Rillaboom, Tyranitar, and Kartana. However, these Pokemon hate getting a paralysis and have to watch out for Chople Berry.

**Item Removal**: Ferrothorn relies heavily on Leftovers to recover off the damage it takes, so removing it hinders its longevity significantly.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: As Ferrothorn doesn't have a reliable recovery option, strong wallbreakers like Bisharp, Galarian Moltres, and Zygarde-10% can power through it in the long run.

**Burn**: Getting burned negates Ferrothorn's Leftovers recovery and heavily reduces its damage output, making it unable to threaten Pokemon it is supposed to switch into like Tapu Koko, Tapu Fini, and Nihilego. Most Water-types that Ferrothorn checks can threaten burns with Scald, limiting its ability to deal with them reliably.

If you already have a Kyogre and a Tapu Koko check on your team, a physically defensive set is also an option. A physically defensive set can be run if the team is not weak to Tapu Koko and Kyogre. Stealth Rock is an option over Spikes in combination with Knock Off, if your team struggles against Flying Type deffogers Flying-type Defoggers such as Ho-Oh, Tornadus-T and Yveltal, removing their Heavy Duty Boots and dealing damage with Stealth Rock. Chople Berry is an option over Leftovers, emergency checking and surviving a hit from Pheromosa, Zamazenta-C and Buzzwole. If another teammate takes the HP slot, Ferrothorn can be used in Special Attack if another teammate doesn't need it, as it can run Giga Drain as a secondary recovery option, and Thunderbolt against usual switch-ins, like Ho-Oh and Skarmory. not a real set Gyro Ball is an option over Power Whip or Body Press, to hit offensive switch ins like Mewtwo hard.

Ferrothorn can also use Protect to get extra recovery from Leftovers and Leech Seed, or Toxic to cripple switch-ins like Ho-Oh, Yveltal, and Volcarona. Leftovers is used to give Ferrothorn more longevity. Minimal Speed should be run on Ferrothorn that runs Gyro Ball to maximize its damage output.

Ferrothorn fits best on bulky offense and balance teams, supporting the team with constant Spikes chip and checking several good special attackers such as Tapu Koko and Nihilego. Most gods synergize well with Ferrothorn and substantially raise its HP, although Ho-Oh deserves a special mention. For Ho-Oh, Ferrothorn deals with foes such as Nihilego and Tapu Koko, while Ho-Oh deals with Fighting- and Fire-types such as Volcarona, Heatran, and Pheromosa for Ferrothorn. Most wallbreakers in the tier appreciate the constant chip from Ferrothorn's Spikes, notably Weavile, Tapu Koko, and Zygarde-10%. Landorus-T and Clefable also make solid partners, with both of them having Stealth Rock, allowing Ferrothorn to freely run Spikes, as well as tanking Fighting-type attacks. Clefable also doesn't mind taking Knock Off, which cuts into Ferrothorn's longevity. Fire-types like Victini, Blacephalon, and Heatran being able to OHKO Ferrothorn, making Water-Types like Vaporeon, Slowking, and Gastrodon good partners for Ferrothorn. **Fire-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Ferrothorn being four times weak to Fire makes it really vulnerable to Victini, Ho-Oh, Heatran, and Blacephalon. Mewtwo, Slowking-G, Kyurem-W, Rayquaza, and Groudon can also bring Fire-type attacks, making Ferrothorn unable to answer them, although they don't like Thunder Wave or Toxic.

**Fighting-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Ferrothorn's other vulnerability is Fighting, leaving it unable to wall Pokemon like Zamazenta-C, and Fighting-type coverage from Rillaboom, Tyranitar, and Kartana leave Ferrothorn vulnerable to them. However they hate getting a paralysis and have to watch out for Chople Berry.

**Item Removal**: Ferrothorn relies heavily on Leftovers to recover off the damage it takes, so removing it hinders its longevity significantly.

**Strong Wallbreakers**: As Ferrothorn doesn't have a reliable recovery option, strong wallbreakers like Bisharp, Galarian Moltres, and Zygarde-10% can power through its bulk in the long run.

**Burn**: Getting burned negates Ferrothorn's Leftovers recovery and heavily reduces its damage output, making it unable to threaten things it is supposed to switch into like Tapu Koko, Tapu Fini, and Nihilego. Most Water-types that Ferrothorn checks also usually have Scald, limiting its ability to deal with them reliably.

**Fire-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Ferrothorn being four times weak Ferrothorn's 4x weakness to Fire makes it really vulnerable to Victini, Ho-Oh, Heatran, and Blacephalon. Mewtwo, Slowking-G, Galarian Slowking, Kyurem-W, Rayquaza, and Groudon can also bring Fire-type attacks, making Ferrothorn unable to answer them, although they don't like Thunder Wave or Toxic.

**Fighting-type Pokemon and Coverage**: Ferrothorn's other vulnerability weakness is Fighting, leaving it unable to wall Pokemon like Zamazenta-C (RC) and Fighting-type coverage moves from Rillaboom, Tyranitar, and Kartana leave Ferrothorn vulnerable to them. However, (AC) they hate getting a these Pokemon hate paralysis and have to watch out for Chople Berry.

**Burn**: Getting burned negates Ferrothorn's Leftovers recovery and heavily reduces its damage output, making it unable to threaten things Pokemon it is supposed to switch into like Tapu Koko, Tapu Fini, and Nihilego. Most Water-types that Ferrothorn checks also usually have can threaten burns with Scald, limiting its ability to deal with them reliably.

GP Team done

dont fear with my lower change volume! i used to literally try and rewrite entire analyses myself lol. a tight grasp of subjective changes only comes with time.

one goal of changes to keep in mind is to "get the most bang for your buck" on writing quality gains per original voice lost. i'll demonstrate with an example.

it can also still switch into some special attackers like Tapu Koko, albeit less reliably.

while still switching into foes that a specially defensive set could such as Tapu Koko, but less reliably.

here, the change from "but" to "albeit" reduces original authors voice but doesn't improve the writing quality. it's what we call a "lateral change," where both options are pretty interchangeable. this example is pretty minor, but i picked it because it's easy to demonstrate.

again, subtler stuff just comes with time and gradually developing one's eye for effective writing. but i'll throw an example of one subtler case up in case it helps to see my thought process.

Ferrothorn has a bunch of options for its last move.

i definitely understand why you thought to remove this. after all, it adds no new information. you could just read the subsequent lines and discover that ferro has a ton of options for the slot. with the paragraph break i inserted, discovering that is even easier. why did i keep the phrase, then?

to me, it improves writing quality despite not adding information. it explicitly and subtly ("bunch of options") primes the reader to get ready to see a bunch of last-moveslot options, which can be helpful when human eyes try to navigate a long stretch of dense move information and risk blurring. the phrase also implies ferrothorn has the advantage of moveset/role versatility.

(Move to OO?)

it's generally okay if set comments mention moves that aren't slashed. this is also why i didn't add the stealth rock slash. it just implies theyre less central than the listed options but more central than things in oo. if specific sections handle this differently, though, that's their prerogative. in general i take writers/qc at their implicit/explicit word for deciding how important things are. occasionally though, if there's like an inconsistency (eg stealth rock is described as central but is listed fourth), i'll try and resolve that to be consistent.

that covers the main bases on commentary. plenty of changes i completely/mostly/more-than-not agreed w/, and changes i didn't agree with probably fall under one of the listed things. feel free to message me about any number of specifics.
