:sv/entei:

After missing a gen of relevance, Entei is back in BSS and better than ever before! I realize 3 sets may seem a bit extreme, but two of them are short and I was worried there'd be an annoying cluster of options and different preferences depending on the item if I didn't separate them (mainly because AV has a lotta different spreads, what a shocker lol)!

[SET]
Bulky Attacker (Entei) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
Tera Type: Grass / Normal
EVs: 148 HP / 244 Atk / 84 Def / 12 SpD / 20 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Extreme Speed
- Stone Edge
- Tera Blast / Trailblaze / Bulldoze / Crunch

[SET COMMENTS]

* Access to strong priority and an ability that prevents Intimidate cycling give Entei a strong niche over other bulky Fire-types like Incineroar and Gouging Fire!

* **Sacred Fire**: Sacred Fire's stupendous burn rate makes switching physical attackers into Entei a terrifyingly risky prospect!

* **Stone Edge**: Despite its notorious reliability issues, Stone Edge is useful for being Entei's strongest attack against Dragonite and Terastallized Ogerpon-H.

* **Tera Blast Grass VS. Trailblaze**: Tera Blast Grass has a chance of OHKOing offensive Primarina, OHKOes Swampert, and deals massive damage to Urshifu-R. Trailblaze misses out on these KOes, but the Speed boost can lead to easier sweeping late-game.

* **Bulldoze VS. Stomping Tantrum**: Bulldoze is both a way to deal decent damage to opposing Fire-types and a useful support move with its Speed drop. Stomping Tantrum offers a bit more power and can match Sacred Fire in power if Entei misses an attack.

* **Crunch**: Crunch is Entei's best coverage option for Latios and Latias.

Other Options
========

* **Iron Head**: Iron Head does a bit of extra damage against Flutter Mane but has limited use otherwise.

EV Spreads
========

* **148 HP / 244 Atk / 84 Def / 12 SpD / 20 Spe with Adamant**: This EV spread avoids an OHKO from Adamant Chien-Pao's Tera-boosted Crunch after Stealth Rock damage and a 2HKO from Timid Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Shadow Ball without Stealth Rock.

* **132 HP / 228 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 140 Spe with Adamant**: This spread spread lets Entei outspeed Iron Bundle after using Trailblaze or Bulldoze while only having a 2% chance of being 2HKOed by Choice Specs Timid Flutter Mane's Shadow Ball.

* **196 HP / 132 Atk / 156 Def / 4 SpD / 20 Spe with Adamant**: This physically defensive spread survives Tera Dark Choice Band Adamant Chien-Pao's Crunch while still dodging a 2HKO from Timid Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Shadow Ball without Stealth Rock.

* **116 HP / 116 Atk / 4 Def / 252 SpD / 20 Spe with Adamant**: This specially defensive spread dodges a 2HKO from Timid Choice Specs Flutter Mane even when with Stealth Rock!

* **4 HP / 236 Atk / 4 Def / 76 SpD / 188 Spe with with Jolly**: This speedy and frailer spread outspeeds all Landorus-T that lack Choice Scarf while still having enough special bulk to almost always avoid a 2HKO Timid Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Shadow Ball.

Tera Types
========

* **Tera Dependency - Medium**: Entei's Fairy resistance is a big selling point as an Assault Vest Pokemon, but Terastallization can help with some of its poor matchups.

* **Grass**: Tera Grass helps Entei with Water-types like Primarina and offensive Urshifu-R. Just note that Suicune and Bulk Up Urshifu-R avoid a 2HKO from Tera Blast.

* **Normal**: While this Entei doesn't have enough firepower to sweep until late-game, boosting Extreme Speed is still helpful in this regard. It can also save Entei from Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Shadow Ball.

* **Fairy**: Tera Fairy isn't as helpful against bulky Water-types, but it makes Urshifu-S and Choice Band Chien-Pao much more manageable and surprises Gouging Fire that may attempt to set up with Breaking Swipe and Dragon Dance.

[SET]
Choice Band (Entei) @ Choice Band
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
Tera Type: Normal / Grass
EVs: 116 HP / 252 Atk / 140 Spe
Adamant / Jolly Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Extreme Speed
- Stone Edge
- Bulldoze / Tera Blast / Crunch

[SET COMMENTS]

* Being immune to Intimidate cycling and a better Speed stat make Entei a reasonable alternative to Choice Band Dragonite for priority cleaning.

* **Sacred Fire**: Sacred Fire's horrifying coin-flip burn chances are a powerful deterrent to problematic foes like Urshifu-R, so it's preferred over Flare Blitz.

* **Stone Edge**: As unreliable as Stone Edge can be, it's needed to do maximum damage to Dragonite.

* **Bulldoze**: Bulldoze's Speed drop is useful for team support and 2HKOes most Focus Sash Flutter Mane, potentially saving Entei from a KO!

* **Crunch**: Crunch deals massive damage to Latias, which can otherwise stall out Stone Edge with Recover.

EV Spreads
========

* **116 HP / 252 Atk / 140 Spe with Adamant**: This spread lets Entei outspeed up to Iron Bundle after using Bulldoze.

* **148 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Def / 4 SpD / 20 Spe with Adamant**: This bulkier spread lets Entei survive Adamant Chien-Pao's Tera-boosted Crunch.

* **4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe with Jolly**: Entei can make use of its often overlooked Speed stat to outspeed Adamant Urshifu formes and Adamant Ogerpon formes, and it can even Speed tie with Chi-Yu.

Tera Types
========

* **Tera Dependency - Medium**: Entei is a perfectly fine priority cleaner, but Terastallization makes that task much easier.

* **Normal**: Tera Normal lets Entei do its best Dragonite impression, giving Extreme Speed such a boost that Chien-Pao can be OHKOed by it after Stealth Rock!

* **Grass**: Tera Grass trades easier Extreme Speed sweeping for shredding through opposing bulky Water-types with Tera Blast, like Urshifu-R and Suicune.

[SET]
Offensive (Entei) @ Life Orb / Mirror Herb
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 50
Tera Type: Grass / Normal
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Extreme Speed
- Stone Edge / Swagger
- Trailblaze / Tera Blast / Swagger

[SET COMMENTS]

* Entei is fast enough to be a surprisingly effective offensive Pokemon thanks to its immunity to Intimidate cycling and decent Speed.

* **Sacred Fire**: Even though Flare Blitz is more powerful and doesn't contend with a irritating 5% chance to miss, the insane burn rate Sacred Fire provides is generally preferred.

* **Stone Edge**: Stone Edge is Entei's best chance at breaking through Dragonite and Gouging Fire before without Terastallization.

* **Trailblaze VS. Grass Tera Blast**: Trailblaze does decent damage to offensive Water-types and lets Entei outspeed the troublesome Choice Scarf Urshifu-R, but Tera Blast is needed to break through bulky Water-types like Suicune.

* **Swagger and Mirror Herb**: This is the closest Entei gets to setting up, giving Entei the chance to pull off a shocking sweep and even be a nuisance with confusion! Outside of Swagger, Mirror Herb can be used for some risky switch-ins to punish setup moves with a boosted Extreme Speed.

* **Jolly VS. Adamant**: Jolly Entei will outpace the prominent Urshifu-R, but Adamant is worth considering if using Tera Normal for easier priority sweeping.

Alternate EV Spreads
========

* **148 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Def / 4 SpD / 20 Spe with Adamant**: If using Swagger, Mirror Herb, and Tera Normal, this bulkier EV spread can fit to avoid an OHKO from Adamant Chien-Pao's Tera-boosted Crunch after Stealth Rock.

Tera Types
========

* **Tera Dependency - Medium**: Entei can function without Terastallization, but there are some matchups that will need it for.

* **Grass**: Tera Grass is Entei's trump card against bulky Water-types like Suicune and Primarina and can save it from getting revenge killed by Choice Scarf Urshifu-R.

* **Normal**: Tera Normal gives Entei a more late-game focus with Extreme Speed sweeping, especially if using Swagger.

* **Fairy**: Tera Fairy with Tera Blast is a less nerve-wracking way to deal with Dragon-types, with Roaring Moon particularly vulnerable to it.

I like this a lot, however I do have one teeny nitpick. A big, big part of Entei’s threat level does stem from Sacred Fire’s burn rate, making otherwise solid checks hesitant to switch in.

This may seem fairly obvious to us but I think making a note about why Sacred Fire is such an incredible move would be a good idea for the newer or less experienced players that might read this

Added a Sacred Fire bullet point to each set (while also mentioning why its better on Flare Blitz even on faster, more offensive sets)!

Is Pressure ever ok? Flinch, and to some extent intimidate, are bad, but Pressure can mitigate the danger of ohko moves. I gues sright now that's mostly Dondozo, at # 46 which is meh, BUT given Entei's resistance to Icicle Crash and Iron Head, and the relative scarcity of Rock Slide anywhere, it may be ok if you're not weak to Chi-Yu. There are still several strong attacks w/ low PP, Extremespeed comes to mind. You get 1 patch a month, unless they change it, for MB tier ending, and that resource limitation may make people use Entei less, if they feel strongly encouraged to change 1 subpar ability for another at a cost. That doesn't factor heavily, but I just feel it HAS no good ability.

Inner Focus is better
Making the recommended set functionally worse just because someone might not use entei because they don’t want to take the time to make the optimal set isn’t our problem.

You’ve been warned multiple times and even infracted recently for making nonsense posts in c&c. Stop. This is not the place for speculation on if something might hypothetically be viable.

Oh I see. Ok, I'll go by usage of suggesting anything.

Was doing some research and noticed that there is a good Season 14 spread missing from the Assault Vest set: 4 HP / 236 Atk / 4 Def / 76 SpD / 188 Spe with Jolly. The higher speed investment outruns all non-Scarf Landorus-T while almost always avoiding a 2HKO from Specs Timid Flutter Mane's unboosted Shadow Ball (0.4% chance to 2HKO.)

Worth noting the sets I found this spread on don't use Trailblaze, so it seems they're mostly for the Lando matchup. The one Trailblaze spread I did find ran 140 Spe with a neutral nature for unboosted Iron Bundle. Not sure that one is worth including, but I'll link the report if you want to take a look: https://koupokekun.hatenablog.com/entry/2024/02/01/195507

Great points, I added the Jolly spread to the set!

As for the Trailblaze spread you found: its super similar to the original one except it shifts 8 Attack EVs to Defense and SpD... which happens to reduce Timid Choice Specs Flutter Mane's chances of 2HKOing with Shadow Ball from 6.3% to 2%. That's certainly worth it considering the point of AV Entei, so I did change the old Trailblaze spread to the one that team used!

(Also I added you to the credits for those two suggestions)

* **Sacred Fire**: Even though Flare Blitz is more powerful and doesn't contend with a irritating 5% chance to miss, the insane burn rate Sacred Fire provides is far too useful to give up generally preferred.

* **Stone Edge**: Stone Edge is Entei's shaky shot of best chance at cutting breaking through Dragonite and Gouging Fire before without Terastallization.

* **Trailblaze VS. Grass Tera Blast**: Trailblaze does decent damage to offensive Water-types and lets Entei outspeed the troublesome Choice Scarf Urshifu-R, but Tera Blast with Terastaillization is needed to break through bulky Water-types like Suicune.

* **Swagger and Mirror Herb**: This is the closest Entei gets to setting up, giving Entei the chance to pull off a shocking sweep and even call upon lady luck for be a nuisance with confusion! Even Outside of Swagger, Mirror Herb can be used for some risky switch-ins to punish set-up setup moves with a boosted Extreme Speed.

* **Jolly VS. Adamant**: Jolly Entei will outpace the prominent Urshifu-R, but Adamant is worth considering if using Tera Normal for easier priority sweeping.

Tera Types
========

* **Tera Dependency - Medium**: Entei can function without Terastallization, but there are some common match-ups matchups that it'll will need it for.

* **Grass**: Tera Grass is Entei's trump card against bulky Water-types like Suicune and Primarina (RC) and can save Entei it from getting revenge killed by Choice Scarf Urshifu-R.

* **Normal**: Tera Normal gives Entei a more late-game focus with Extreme Speed sweeping, especially if using Swagger.

* **Fairy**: Tera Fairy with Tera Blast is a less nerve-wracking way to deal with Dragon-types, with Roaring Moon in particularly getting slayed by vulnerable to it.

Alternate EV Spreads
========

* **148 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Def / 4 SpD / 20 Spe with Adamant**: If using Swagger, Mirror Herb, and Tera Normal, this bulkier EV spread can fit to avoid an OHKO from Adamant Chien-Pao's Tera boosted Tera-boosted Crunch after Stealth Rock damage.
