Doubles OU Teambuilding Shop

I'm using my 6k post to do something useful! Whoa! What a shocker!

So the OU forum has had one of these for a while and it's seen some major success (or at least it looks like it has). At some point I decided I wanted to make one for the Doubles forum. While I never forgot about it, I kept putting it off. Now I'm Doubles co-TL and hitting 6k posts and I figured that I should finally post it.

As should be fairly obvious, this is a thread for users like you to request that some of the best Doubles OU builders make you a team. All you need to do is give us a couple Pokemon to build around (or a single Pokemon with an idea of what you'd like to see) and we'll do our best to build you a killer team. We'll also give you our thoughts on the process of how we built the team - our end goal is to help you improve, and reading about the teambuilding process of others can help you learn to build your own teams. (Or maybe you just need a cool Mega Gengar team for Seasonals, that's fine too.)

Current builders:
- Arcticblast
- Laga
- Mizuhime
- Spacebass
- Bughouse
- Stratos
We'll scout teambuilders. Don't ask to become a builder for this thread.

Rules:
- Have a one paragraph description with the set / core you want us to build around and a slight idea of what kind of team you want the end result to be. Also, actually have the set(s) you want us to use in your post. This makes the process of building teams faster for all of us here.
- Do not post asking us to make use of uncompetitive Pokemon. This is not a competition to see how good we are at team building; this is us trying to educate people on what is good and how to build effective teams. If you're not sure if your Pokemon is viable, check the Viability Rankings.
- Please note that we can choose to ignore requests for extremely generic sets and / or cores (e.g.: Mega Kangaskhan + Bisharp, Mega Charizard Y + Venusaur). This in a way extends to cores with a user of Follow Me / Rage Powder - redirection is super strong but might end up added regardless, so drop the Amoonguss from your post.
- NO ABILITY GIMMICKS. This includes things like Perish Trap, Skill Swap + Slaking, Skill Swap Spinda, Sturdy Shedinja, Wonder Guard Electrics, and so on and so forth.
- Do not flame people for asking for a certain Pokemon or that they can't build one themselves.
- This isn't the OU forum, so this thread probably won't fill up too fast. That said, refrain from requesting a team when there are several pending requests.
- Please remember that these teams are first drafts and as such will not be perfect. Edit them as you please.
- On that note, you are free (and highly encouraged) to suggest and post changes / critiques you've made to already posted teams that you feel improve them.
- However, you are not allowed to post your own teams here to have us modify them. We're here to build new teams, not modify older ones. If you want your own teams critiqued and modified, post them in the RMT forum, not here.
- Remember that finally smells, but we like him anyway.

As I end this post, I'd like to give a quick shoutout to Tokyo Tom. When somebody (in this case Tom) comes to you asking for teams, proceeds to win with your teams, and then gushes about how good they are, it makes you want to stick around in a way that not a lot of things can.

I've wanted to try out Volcarona in Doubles for a while, but every time I try to make a team around it, I get stumped on what Pokemon compliment with it. Here's a set I particularly want to try out:

Volcarona @ Coba Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 132 HP / 252 SpA / 124 Spe
Modest Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Heat Wave
- Protect
- Bug Buzz

To note, with a Coba Berry and 132 HP investment, it's guaranteed to live a hit from a 252+ Life Orb Brave Bird from Talonflame. Though that settles the bird problem, Volcarona is severely allergic to Rock Slide, and a way I can at least try to circumvent that is with this Aegislash set:

Aegislash @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Stance Change
Level: 99
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Wide Guard
- Shadow Ball
- King's Shield
- Flash Cannon

Standardish Aegislash WP set with Wide Guard. It's also L.99 because I have huge cojones and I want to slow creep the standard Aegi sets. It'd be really cool if you can make a team around this core. You can also change these sets to what's best for the team, if you feel the need to do so. Thanks

I hope I did this right...

Since Sheer Force Feraligatr has come out, I haven't seen anyone using it in doubles. So I was thinking maybe a Feraligatr/Jirachi core could work well. Gatr gets rid of Heatran, Lando-t, and Aegislash while Jirachi can redirect status and powerful attacks allowing Gatr to run through teams. The team would obviously just be a good stuff style team.

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 HP / 64 Atk / 192 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Dragon Dance/Swords Dance
- Protect

Jirachi @ Safety Goggles
Ability: Serene Grace
- Follow Me
- Iron Head
- Icy Wind
- Protect

I have no clue what specific evs i should run, this gatr spread outspeeds adamant Bisharp, kills Aegislash in shield form after +2 with crunch and has max hp to live some shit. I guess the jirachi spread could just be the standard spread but idk.

I've been around for a long time, but doubles was never something I seriously tried to learn, despite having an interest in it. I suppose maintaining success in singles prevented me from learning a whole new format, but I think it's time I step into the ring and really learn.

I've been interested in seeing if Smogon would ever develop an in depth tiering system for Pokemon doubles, considering a lot of Pokemon in singles get way more play in doubles due to the nature of the format, similar to how some cards in Magic: the Gathering are absolute ass in one format but total bombs in another format.

When I play Pokemon, I tend to prefer bulky offense or stall, as I'm a mid-range and control player in Magic and play punish or defensive characters in fighting games (Ganondorf for the former, Sheik for the latter). A lot of my favorite Pokemon in singles get absolutely no play in doubles (Skarmory is my absolutely favorite Pokemon in singles), but on the other hand, a few of my favorites (MAMOSWINE, BABY) put in work no matter what format.

In my time with the doubles format, I've taken a liking to Rock Slide for the double stun chance, and Tyranitar was something I'd wanted to make work, but couldn't figure out how on my own. I've never effectively used DisQuake before, but it seems like fun as well. Fire types are probably the one kind of Pokemon I have the hardest time using, mostly because (outside of Heatran) they are often exceptionally linear in the aggressive direction. Arcanine is the only fire type I can use effectively almost all the time. I enjoy having priority attacks and hazards, but only the former will be viable in doubles, or so I understand.

I suppose if I were going to request assistance in developing a team for doubles, I'd probably want to build around:

Greninja
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Mat Block
- Ice Beam
- Gunk Shot

Rotom-Wash
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 36 SpD / 220 Spe
Calm Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Hydro Pump
- Discharge

Mamoswine @ Choice Band
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash
- Superpower

I'd like to see how Mamotom's Disquake will fare. Greninja I was looking to as a finisher. I left out certain details in each set based on my lack of knowledge. Feel free to change what you feel would be preferential. I know I'd like Rotom to be able to soak hits but also be faster than speedy Sleep inducers like Breloom (speedy being relative to the general Sleeper crowd, not the meta as a whole).

Thanks in advance.

When you mentioned Mega Ampharos and said you'd like Trick Room I was like "FUCK YEAH AMPHY TR" and slapped on a Specs Politoed for a really powerful TR offense duo. From there was the obvious Cresselia, but here I was beginning to worry about Amoonguss. I recently started using a team with TR Whimsicott on the Battle Spot ladder (fight me some time) and decided that the extra Water resist would be nice to have on Rain. Encore on a TR setter is really cool because Encore Whimsi forces switches like crazy, which actually gives it the opportunity to set up TR. From there I was like "well this can't really hurt shroom either" so I added Talonflame, which also helps with the mounting Ferrothorn problem, and put a bulky Lando-T in the last slot for insurance and bringing in Ampharos safely. Watch out for Sylveon and Mega Gardevoir.

also you can actually play this meta so let me know if you think of any good changes

I know the team is kind of hyper offense-y, which doesn't seem to be your style, but Discharge is honestly difficult to use in Doubles (also did you know I was a stall player too before I got more into Doubles?). Either you run a dedicated Discharge team and lose or you paralyze your own Pokemon and lose. As a result, my first thought for an add was Mega Sceptile - the best Pokemon in the metagame that can really benefit from Discharge. (You now absolutely destroy Azumarill. Go you!) From there I added Cresselia, which provides needed Speed control (as well as its own Trick Room to reverse Trick Room) and can actually benefit from being paralyzed, avoiding Amoonguss's Spore and random burns. The last add was Wide Guard Aegislash, which gives you insurance against the Fairies of the metagame as well as sun. At the very end I changed Greninja's set. Mat Block is quite frankly terrible (only works on turn 1 and has neutral priority) so I dropped it for Protect. From there I also took off Ice Beam (Mamo is enough) for something that can beat down Cresselia and opposing Aegislash in Dark Pulse, then added HP Fire for Ferrothorn.

Congrats to srk1214, Lolk, Laga, and SpaceBass for joining the team! And Stratos too but how am I denying him a spot lol

Mega Gardevoir on a TW team was the given. Suicune is a very natural fit as you suggested, and I went with the offensive spread, which lets Suicune outrun Breloom and Bisharp, and many things in TW, like Scarf Lando-T. Another mon I wanted to use was fast Rhyperior, which Scooters (Lohgock + Pwnemon) used in SPL. It outruns everything up to 110s in Tailwind and hits like a truck with Life Orb. Here I noticed that the team was getting weak to WG Aegislash as well as cheesy sun spam with sleeps, so I decided the next two mons needed to help with both concerns. First, I added Rotom-H with Safety Goggles which is a standard sun check that also threatens Aegislash, and provides me Will-o-Wisp too to help stop Kangaskhan. Next I realized I wanted something that could help with Sleep, Aegislash, and also provide a second Tailwind user. This is where the uncommon Mandibuzz comes in. It is bulky as hell and can actually pull off Lefties and Roost. Overcoat protects from Sleep :) Lastly, I decided I wanted a Fake Out user. I didn't particularly like the momentum killing lack of coverage and susceptibility to burns that Hitmontop brings, nor the frailty of Weavile/Infernape/etc, so I went with a Hariyama (although Feint Hitmontop would probably work in that slot too, since even if it lacks coverage, it can keep offensive pressure up for its teammates by Feint messing with protects and wide guards). Hariyama is running Assault Vest and Heavy Slam to help with a slight fairy weakness and to be able to tank Rain boosted attacks as well. Lastly, I doubled back around and realized that Focus Blast, which is overwhelmingly for Heatran, wasn't necessary given the rest of the team, so I dropped it for Taunt to help with the TR matchup (along with Snarl Mandibuzz you can stop CM Cress pretty easily). I also made it fast as the team lacked much speed elsewhere without Tailwind and I needed something powerful that could actually outrun opposing weather sweepers.

helo,
i started with gatr. then i added amoonguss because i thought the typing synergy was better for a redirector (jilachi didnt really have too much synelgy). then i wanted to make a fire water grass core with heatran. diancie appreciates lando-t and aegislash removed. i like thundurus and latios. nice mons. solid mons
the key to building a good team is adding n_nice mon_ns

i run max atk and max speed on gatr bc i like outspeeding random scarf stuff (and genies and some other stuff in that range) at +1. note does not outspeed skymin at +1. cannot outspeed choice scarf adamant landorus-t even if you are jolly gatr.
i like spdef amoonguss. you can run more physical defence if you want. sludge bomb bc protect dosent do damage
heatran outspeeds rotom-w. i like sub
thundurus is kale's spread which does 75 to azu, and eats up draco from latios, and diancie rock
standard .diancin
i did recover bc stratos is my hero and i didnt need tailwind or random coverage

edit 600th post turn up
KyleCole likes it raw
so does deoxys speed

What do you do against sun or rain?

Sun (most Zard + vena) completely curb stomp any combinations of mons you can use on the team and although you have heattom it's an iffy answer at best due to lack of recovery (further emphasized by lack of sitrus) and is 2hko'd by Zard Y if Zard comes in on anything but heattom it gets a free kill.

Rain is also a massive problem due to a whopping one resist with the one resist being unable to touch anything on rain and is threatened by our fav swift swimmer ludi whereas the rest of the team gets overwhelmed by water spam.

Also Tr seems to be a pain in the ass due to your only answer being gard and taunt is an iffy check to tr and once Tr goes up your team is absolutely slaughtered.

The sun matchup is fine considering the team has no fire weaks and 2 solid grass resists, both of which are immune to sleep. That plus Tailwind (under which Rhyperior is tough for a Sun team to switch into) provides plenty of a fighting chance vs sun. You can of course switch to a Heatran over Rotom-H if the Sun matchup bothers you, but then you'd probably want Drill Run over EQ on Rhyperior.

Rain is the much iffier matchup, but Hariyama can help stand in against Ludicolo
252+ SpA Ludicolo Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 104 SpD Assault Vest Hariyama in Rain: 199-235 (46.3 - 54.7%)
252+ Atk Hariyama Close Combat vs. 104 HP / 0 Def Ludicolo: 273-322 (83.4 - 98.4%)
Mandibuzz can also live a Hydro in Rain, Snarl, and live the second, while using Roost or Tailwind. Tailwind + Gard tends to be a safe bet.

The TR matchup isn't all that bad when you consider that the most common mons lack an easy way to punch through. Camel doesn't just sweep nor does Mawile. Suicune and Rotom-H are big plugs in the way. Moreover, there's not /just/ Taunt. There's Fake Out and powerful attacks. Hariyama's Heavy Slam deals with Aromatisse for example, while Mandibuzz can stay in all day vs Cress. Jellicent would be the biggest issue I think.

Not having fire Weaks isn't the problem when fire bops anything it hits neutrally and tailwind is unreliable as an answer since even under it your team actually fails to threaten sun + common partners and cune itself loses to Zard + anything since you'll constantly be on the defensive fighting an uphill battle which is never good.

Rain from your description is pray you don't get overwhelmed which is again sketchy when SS + partner quickly overwhelm you and being backed up by another swift swimmer or encore toed among other things completely screw you over.

I don't see how fake out + taunt effectively stop tr and not just the ones you listed.....

I'd really like to have a semi-room team that uses Mega Diancie inside tr as regular Diancie and outside as the mega. This would probably require a weird speed that I dunno how to calc, so sorry if I don't post sets.
Partners that are semi-tr would probably be cress as the setter and amoong as the mushroom, but nothing else because I don't want the tr part of the team to be too obvious, surprise factor is something this team should bring.
I think a really interesting idea for the Diancie is to make it a substitute variant, since in tr it could sub up when opponents protect, and the sub can help Diancie's slower than normal speed once tr is gone. I dunno if I would give up moonblast or earth power though. I'd build myself but i really don't know how to EV that Diancie. Hell, I don't even know if it's possible or viable.
Thanks for doing this guys :)
Edit: Spacebass convinced me this was a bad idea lol

clius I think that sounds good on paper, but in practise its going to be wasting your mega slot a large majority of the time by staying non mega purely to take advantage of trick room.

You say you want surprise factor but imo a weakness policy trick room Diancie can bluff being mega on semiroom and probably surprise people more too.

Alright, this may seem odd, but I'm going to make a request. Could a lovely teambuilder make something with the based god known as Support Chesnaught?

It has access to some nifty moves like Super Fang, Spiky Shield, Leech Seed, Feint, Helping Hand, Hammer Arm/Low Kick/Low Sweep, Taunt, and Quick Guard. Through these moves and its solid bulk it can match up quite nicely against Kangaskhan, Landorus-T, Gengar, Venusaur, Bisharp, Amoonguss, Terrakion, Breloom, etc etc, while also obviously struggling with tons of other mons like Charizard, Latios, Sylveon, and Shaymin-S.

A VGC inspired set (as seen in the most recent The Smog edition) would be something along the lines of
Chesnaught @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 224 HP / 60 Atk / 44 Def / 180 SpD
Sassy Nature
- Super Fang
- Feint
- Helping Hand
- Low Kick

But feel free to use some other combination of moves and tweaked EVs. Rain probably makes the most sense, but if you can make it work a different way, go for it.

Stratos EDIT: laga calls dibs

So I built a team for you srk1214

I have no idea if you approve of my method of building, since I only have made a few slight edits. So far it feels comfortable to use in the couple of ladder matches I've played and almost all Chesnaught sets work well on the team (the one you posted has a hard time without Protection but is still efficient). The main move that's good but I still opted not to use is Helping Hand, especially on this team where a lot of mons can run spread moves. Feint is flippin amazing straight up, everyone who wants to try this team: use it more often than your gut tells you to!!

To take a look at the teambuilding process I kinda just kept filling in whichever holes I had. I built quite quickly; since the second I've started considering using Chesnaught for anything I've wanted to use it with Charizard. The main synergetic problem between the main duo is the lack of speed, letting offense kind of shit on it's life, especially physical spam since zard has natural Special bulk and chesnaught is invested in it. Scarf Landorus-T was *surprise* the perfect fit for yet another team!!!!! I originally put a Heatran there but immediately realised that diancie was simply just gonna eat my every time. Aegislash is the far superior in the slot, and I opted for a Life Orb set for personal reasons (all other sets consistently don't do anything when I use them). SubSlash might work here too if you like using that.

In the 5th spot there is the lord himself Scarf Tyrantrum.
This dude tears apart families.

6th spot is just a filler. Goggles Wind Talonflame is emergency everything: emergency Speed Control, emergency priority attack, emergency sleep absorber, it's just a genuine filler for anything that the main team could be weak to. You can usually at matchup decide wether this thing will be useful or wether to just fodder it for momentum.

Many thanks for the team. I've overall had success with it, but I notice when I lose it is because my Mamoswine is the only physical attacker and he'll die before their Calm Mind POS starts building. Might you have a suggestion to include more physical? Could I switch Shadow Ball for Shadow Sneak or is it really underwhelming? Or is there another suggested alternative?

SpaceBass def go with Rock Slide or Stone Edge on Mega Luke. The team will be begging for ways to hit Charizard and Talonflame
