Doubles OU is performing its first tiering survey of SV! We've compiled responses from the np thread and other suggestions on how to improve the tier, and now we want to see data on what direction the community would like DOU to go. Most questions on this survey are with regards to the metagame, trying to see if there are any problematic elements that should be suspected. In the future, we may do further surveys with regards to other aspects of the community.

The form can be found at this link. We will publish the responses in one week, so on Monday, March 20th. Please message me or any other DOU staff/council member for clarification on any of the questions!

The results are in!

Thank you to everyone who responded to our survey! The survey had 66 responses, which has been about in line with our past surveys. We appreciate all of your feedback and will be taking into consideration for some of our tiering decisions in the very near future. The results of the survey are below:

1679402848109.png

1679402874734.png

1679402903352.png

1679402939377.png

1679402972415.png

1679417539105.png

1679403007930.png

1679403034738.png

1679403094934.png

Some personal takeaways:
  • People still largely enjoy SV DOU, with this survey being largely in line with previous DOU surveys in terms of enjoyment.
  • Responders believe the tier is slightly less stable than in the last SS DOU survey, which likely makes sense because at that point SS DOU was very mature, and SV is still relatively new. The mode response being 4 is still very promising.
  • Almost 3/4 of respondents believe some action should be taken on Chi-Yu, with about half feeling it might be broken and deserves a suspect, and 1/4 believing it’s broken. This is roughly in line with forums responses we’ve seen.
  • Almost 2/3 of respondents believe Iron Bundle is not broken and should not be suspect tested. With approx. 1/4 thinking it might be broken. So despite Iron Bundle rising in usage stats, many believe it is a healthy part of the metagame, and that Chi-Yu is more the broken part of the combination.
  • Approximately half of respondents feel Iron Hands is not broken, and 1/3 feel it might be broken. Few responses felt very strongly about Iron Hands, suggesting it is not on the top of most players list of mons that action should be taken on. This comes as a bit of a surprise as it has recently been one of the top used mons, and having won many games as a sweeper.
  • Slightly more respondents feel that Chien-Pao is not broken than feel it might be broken, but in all having 50% of respondents thinking a suspect is appropriate is a fairly large number. This is once again in line with forum posts.
  • Walking Wake had the most respondents that did not feel strongly about it, suggesting that it may be a little too early to tell on this new addition. However, it did have approximately 30% of respondents wanting some action be taken, which is high for a very new pokemon.
  • Approximately 70% of respondents did not think that Terastillization was a problem, which does line up with forum posting sentiment.
  • Interestingly, over half of respondents felt that evasion abilities should be suspected. So while they’re not commonly used, respondents felt that they were uncompetitive.
Like last time, responses to the last two questions won't be shared publicly but will be with council, with usernames redacted (I can see them but only used it to check for fraud). Thank you to everyone who made their voice heard and participated in the tiering process!

With the conclusion of Classic, Doubles OU is performing a tiering survey of its older generations! We’re looking at implementing an oldgens circuit for next year, and so we want the community’s feedback on whether they would want that, as well as thoughts on how to improve each of the tiers.

We do ask that you only respond on tiers that you have some experience in. If you haven’t tried out a tier, or have minimally played it, the best thing to do would be to abstain from questions regarding that tier. The only required question is your Smogon username, so respondents can choose which of the other questions they answer.

The survey can be found by clicking this link. We’ll publish the responses in about 10 days, so sometime around the 1st of September. Feel free to message me regarding any clarification on the questions.

Oldgens survey results!

Thank you to everyone who responded. We got 49 responses, which is a fair amount for a survey that is only concerned with oldgens. Different questions got some variance in number of responses, as we asked people to only respond to questions regarding tiers they have experience in. Each oldgen council will be able to use these responses to improve the tiers, so everyone's contributions are appreciated!

Forms response chart. Question title: Do you prefer playing older generations compared to SV DOU?. Number of responses: 49 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: Would you compete in a DOU oldgens circuit?. Number of responses: 49 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How much do you enjoy playing SS DOU right now?. Number of responses: 43 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How do you feel about Kartana being banned in SS DOU?. Number of responses: 43 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How much do you enjoy playing SM DOU?. Number of responses: 45 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How do you feel about Mega-Metagross in SM DOU?. Number of responses: 45 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How much do you enjoy playing XY DOU?. Number of responses: 41 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How do you feel about Volcanion in XY DOU?. Number of responses: 41 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How much do you enjoy playing BW DOU?. Number of responses: 40 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How do you feel about Thundurus in BW DOU?. Number of responses: 40 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How much do you enjoy playing DPP DOU?. Number of responses: 36 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How do you feel about Latios in DPP DOU?. Number of responses: 36 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How much do you enjoy playing ADV DOU?. Number of responses: 32 responses.

Forms response chart. Question title: How do you feel about Latias in ADV DOU?. Number of responses: 32 responses.

Looking at each tier individually:
SS enjoyment:
Mean: 3.56. Mode: 4. # responses: 43.
  • Seems that SS is reasonably popular, with 4's and 5's being the most popular responses.
  • There is some support for Kartana being retested, but there was slightly more respondents saying it was absolutely broken.
  • The free response section for this tier varied a lot, with some people wanting different aspects tested like Rillaboom, Incineroar, Tapu Fini, Tailwind, Dynamax, but also the most popular response was respondents saying the tier is balanced and healthy.
SM enjoyment:
Mean: 4.04. Mode: 4. # responses: 45.
  • SM scored the highest in both number of responses as well as enjoyment, which matches what we've heard anecdotally that it is the best old generation.
  • There seems to be a small belief that Mega-Metagross should be suspected, with nobody certain that it is broken.
  • Basically every free response continues these sentiments saying that its a balanced tier (with a couple calling it the GOAT). There weren't many other sentiments that got more than one response.
XY enjoyment:
Mean: 3.66. Mode: 4. # responses: 41.
  • XY scored the second highest in enjoyment, with the third most responses, suggesting the tier is in a good place.
  • There was only one responses believing that Volcanion is broken, with 28 responses thinking that it is not broken.
  • Most of the free responses said that the tier is fine, with a couple saying that Deoxys-Speed should be considered for a suspect.
BW enjoyment:
Mean: 3.48. Mode: 4. # responses: 40.
  • BW scored just slightly lower than all the other team-preview tiers, but not by much, which is interesting as there are some vocal detractors of the tier.
  • There's a small belief that Thundurus should be suspected, with one respondent certain that it is broken.
  • Many of the free responses felt the tier was fine, but a few did mention that they feel there is a lot of luck elements in the tier, and some thinking that just Thunder Wave should be suspected. There was also a few responses lamenting how it is a tier that is hard to get into.
DPP enjoyment:
Mean: 3.56. Mode: 3,5. # responses: 36.
  • Interestingly the most popular response was both a 3 & a 5, suggesting there are some diehard DPP lovers.
  • There is a pretty strong feeling among respondents that Latios should be suspected, as 30% are certain it is broken, and 36% think it should be suspected, with only 5% believing that it is not broken.
  • Many of the responses are regarding a need for a Latios suspect, and a couple responses also feel that Thunder Wave is a problem.
ADV enjoyment:
Mean: 2.81. Mode: 3. # responses: 32.
  • ADV received the lowest scores of any of the tiers, with noticeably only one response giving it a 5.
  • There is a very strong belief amongst respondents that Latias is broken, with only 10% feeling that it isn't.
  • The free responses mostly mention Latias needing a suspect, but there are a few that don't want a re-suspect so quick. Interestingly none of the responses mentioned explosion needing a suspect.

With regards to the other general questions, it seems that most players enjoy playing both SV & older generations, which is a good sign to see on a survey concerning only older generations. There also seems to be strong support for a dedicated circuit for older generations, with only 6% of respondents saying they wouldn't participate, and about 30% saying they would only play in their favorite tiers.

With the last quickban vote slate concluding following the release of the Teal Mask DLC, the doubles council is performing a quick tiering survey to see what elements the community is wanting to see action taken on first. These questions are just focusing on Pokémon that have been suggested as problematic, either by being unbanned in the quickban slates or in the Now Playing Thread, in order to help guide coming suspect tests.

The form can be found at this link.
As this is intended to be a quick survey for rapid action, the survey will close on Wednesday, October the 4th at 10:00 PM GMT -4.

The results for the survey post the Teal Mask DLC are in! Thanks to everyone who responded. This survey has 37 respondents, which is quite lower than in previous surveys, but probably can be explained that it was only run for a short time. We wanted to quickly get some community feedback on what elements people deem most problematic, and the council will use these to determine upcoming suspect tests.

1696474280484.png

1696474312216.png

1696474338053.png

Some personal takeaways:
  • Basculegion seems to be on top of mind for everyone, with 65% of respondents feeling that it is broken, and only 13.5% feeling that it shouldn’t be suspected. This matches community sentiment.
  • Next up is Flutter Mane, of which only 21.6% of respondents feel is not suspect worthy. Respondents are less sure that it is broken than Basculegion, however.
  • After that is Ogerpon-Hearthflame, who has the same 21.6% of respondents who feel it is not suspect worthy, but are even less sure it is broken than Flutter Mane.
  • For Iron Hands, 43.2% feel that it should not be suspected, and 21.6% are sure it is broken. Interestingly, the community feels slightly more sure it is broken than they did in March, which was before Pokemon Home compatibility.
  • Lastly is Ursaluna, which has about 40% feeling that it is not suspect worthy. There are still a noteworthy number of users feeling that it may be suspect worthy though.
  • Of the free response question, notably Chien-Pao is listed a couple of times as something that could be looked at, so perhaps it should be included on the next survey.
  • There is also a couple comments listing Tornadus, so that could also be considered for the next survey.
Thank you to everyone who made their voice heard and participated in the tiering process!

The results for the 2023 DOU Circuit survey are in. Thanks to everyone who responded, the council will be taking these into account for building the 2024 circuit!

The survey only had 27 responses, which is quite low. Perhaps we need to do a better job marketing these, or maybe people don’t have strong opinions on these questions.

Some takeaways:
  • Respondents are generally enjoying SV DOU, and most responses say “no” to seeing something suspected before the new DLC. A few did feel that Flutter Mane deserves a second look.
  • Oldgens & team tournaments are generally people’s favorite, as respondents show they really like team tournaments, and tournaments like Classic were some of people’s favorite.
  • Respondents generally enjoyed the circuit as constructed, with most feeling that there were the right amount of tournaments & most tournaments awarded the right amount of points.
  • The main outlier to this is OSDT, which was respondents favorite tournament, and which half of respondents who had an opinion felt should award more CP.
  • Ladder tournament is the least liked, with a sizeable portion that despises it. This matches up with general sentiment, but it was good to see that there are those who still enjoy it.
  • Respondents pretty overwhelmingly feel like the right amount of people qualify for invitationals.
  • Respondents would generally like to see an oldgens circuit.
Thanks to everyone who participated!

As is tradition by now, there have been talks about cutting BW DOU from this year's iteration of DPL. As a result, we're looking for your thoughts on the BW metagame! If you'd like to contribute your thoughts, whether you're a player or just a spectator, let us know!

>> The BW DOU tiering survey can be found here. <<

This survey will be open for one week, as usual, but we encourage you to fill it out early - the more data we have ahead of player signups, the better!
Thanks to Actuarily, Yoda, and the BW council for their help with language and question selection!

The results for the pre-DPL BW DOU survey are in! The survey received a total of 35 responses, which would be pretty low for a current gen survey, but since BW is an older and less played format, it seems pretty good! Let's get into the details. Open response questions have had their responses provided to the BW council (with identifying information removed to the best of my ability).

1704595683779.png

1704596168449.png

1704596241817.png

1704596263703.png

A quick summary:

- The vast majority of respondents play BW. This much is to be expected. Over half stated they only rarely play BW; in hindsight, the survey should have included a way for respondents to elaborate here, as there could be a lot of different reasons players don't play as much BW.
- Slightly over half of respondents plan on signing up for BW in DPL. Godspeed to you all! However, only five plan to sign up as "mains."
- People seem to generally enjoy watching BW, with no responses at the lowest end of the scale. On the other hand, people seem to enjoy playing BW less. Only four respondents claim to really love playing BW, and one strongly dislikes it; an equal number of respondents somewhat enjoy it and somewhat dislike it. Of note: both respondents who do not play BW voted in the middle, and one other respondent abstained.
- Between the two tiering questions and the open responses, Thundurus is definitely the standout issue, with 21 respondents believing it could or should be tested. Jellicent and rain received mentions in the open responses as being potential problems if Thundurus were to be banned. A very small number of respondents believe Thunder Wave is "the problem" and not necessarily Thundurus. Excadrill was also mentioned.
- A small number of respondents brought up feeling-based issues with BW - some claimed it was hard to learn, others simply think it's boring.
- An overwhelming number of respondents believe BW now has enough representation in our circuit. Nice!
- While the idea of a suspect slot was met with generally positive reception, it's a close enough vote that we will not be making any changes to BW in DPL.
- AIRedzone wants you all to know he loves Scrafty.
:bw/scrafty:

If you'd like to discuss these results or hear some more detailed opinions, check out the BW DOU thread, or head on over to the Doubles OU Discord. Thank you all for participating!

With the DLC2 quickban slates reaching their conclusion, the council would like to hear the community's feedback on any potential future tiering action. So we ask that everyone please complete the tiering survey below!

The survey can be found at this link.

- Please note that Whimsicott/Beat up is one of the questions, as there is some question over whether whimsicott or beat up is the proper element to be suspected as part of the beat up + justified or stamina combination, if at all.

Many of the pokemon included on the survey were taken from posts on the metagame thread, which is also the place to discuss your thoughts on any of the elements on the survey, or any additional elements that should see tiering action.

The results are in from the January SV DOU Survey! Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond, the council has taken consideration of the responses and are discussing future action.

The survey had 51 respondents, which is a pretty good number, up from the other recent surveys.

1706665624942.png

1706665631417.png

1706665636734.png

Some takeaways:
  • Most respondents are enjoying SV DOU, with 50% of respondents voting it a 4 or 5, and 85% voting a 3 or higher.
  • Balance-wise there weren't many 5s, but still 85% voted 3 or higher.
  • Respondents generally want already banned elements to stay banned.
  • Respondents would like to see tiering action taken on Flutter Mane & Deoxys-Attack. With 80% of respondents thinking Flutter Mane should be suspect tested, and 63% thinking Deoxys-Attack should be.
  • Respondents generally did not feel that Incineroar, Beat up, or Terastillization warranted tiering action.
  • Of the three responses, a few people mentioned Kingambit should warrant a look, a few mentioned Chien-Pao, and a few said Expanding Force should be considered.
Thanks to everyone who participated!
