Overview

Mega Gengar is one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the Balanced Hackmons metagame thanks to its combination of high base 170 Special Attack and base 130 Speed. It also has a great Ghost / Poison offensive typing, which allows it to hit most of the metagame for at least neutral damage. Its typing also grants it a resistance to Fairy and immunity to Normal- and Fighting-type attacks, allowing it to use the combination of Normalize and Entrainment to become untouchable, especially against Imposter users. Abilities such as Dazzling and Queenly Majesty keep setup Mega Gengar sets from being checked by priority moves, and a great STAB option in Moongeist Beam allows it to also bypass certain Unaware Pokemon such as Zygarde-C and Primal Kyogre and also allows it to target Sturdy Shedinja. Mega Gengar is, however, weak to common offensive types such as Dark, Ground, and Psychic. It is also very frail, meaning that it usually cannot endure a hit coming from offensive Pokemon and can easily be revenge killed by priority moves if not equipped with the proper ability or under the effects of Psychic Terrain. It also struggles against counterplay from threats that carry Z-Crystals, Revelation Dance, or Magic Bounce, which are all seeing common use on defensive pivots thanks to Mega Gengar's popularity.

Moves

Entrainment is the focus of this set, as it allows Mega Gengar to effectively be immune to nearly every attacking move from any opposing Pokemon slower then Mega Gengar. It also has the benefit of overwriting popular abilities such as Poison Heal and Regenerator, which can be useful for crippling common users of these abilities such as Primal Kyogre and Solgaleo. Judgment acts as the main STAB move of this set, as it converts into a Ghost-type attack when Mega Gengar is equipped with a Spooky Plate. It also lets Mega Gengar Imposter-proof itself if the Chansey is not running a Spooky Plate or Earth Plate itself. Shell Smash is a great setup move that turns Mega Gengar into a deadly sweeper. It also works well in conjunction with Entrainment, which creates many opportunities to set up once the opposing Pokemon has acquired Normalize. Quiver Dance is another great setup move that allows Mega Gengar to better sustain itself thanks to the increase in Special Defense on top of it not lowering its defensive stats like Shell Smash does. However, Mega Gengar gives up the immediate power and Speed that Shell Smash provides. Taunt is a great utility move that allows Mega Gengar to prevent defensive Pokemon from recovering or using other status moves such as Haze and Whirlwind. It also works well alongside Entrainment, as Mega Gengar can then completely stop the opposing Pokemon from using any type of move. Normal-type Moongeist Beam is a great coverage option that not only allows Mega Gengar to target Normal-types that would like to switch into Judgment, but can also allow it to break through common Unaware walls such as Primal Kyogre and Mega Gyarados. Core Enforcer can be used as an alternative as a means to lure in Magic Bounce threats such as Mega Audino and Registeel, but it is more reliant on predictions in order to work effectively. King's Shield allows Mega Gengar to protect itself from physical priority moves such as Fake Out and Extreme Speed (when affected by abilities such as Aerilate and Refrigerate) and proceed to take the hit the following turn thanks to the Attack drop it causes.

Set Details

Normalize is used because it effectively allows Mega Gengar to neutralize any slower foes when used in conjunction with Entrainment. Spooky Plate is equipped to turn Judgement into a Ghost-type attack, giving Mega Gengar a STAB option that cannot be emulated by Imposter Pokemon if they are not running Spooky Plate as well. EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to turn Mega Gengar into a fast and powerful special attacker.

Usage Tips

Normalize Mega Gengar can shut down many common defensive walls such as Registeel, Solgaleo, Giratina, Zygarde-C, and Dialga due to it being able to nullify their attacks and prevent them from utilizing their defensive abilities. Therefore, it's best used as a wallbreaker that can weaken the aforementioned Pokemon, allowing other setup sweepers to have a much more easier time performing their role late-game. However, Magic Bounce can be run on any of the mentioned Pokemon above to be able to bounce back the effects of Entrainment, disallowing Mega Gengar to break through these threats if it does not carry Core Enforcer. Scouting for Magic Bounce on these defensive Pokemon is thus key in order to use Mega Gengar efficiently. Note that Mega Gengar can still pressure some of the aforementioned threats with its damage output alone. Even after setting up a Shell Smash, Mega Gengar is still prone to be checked by priority users such as Triage Mega Rayquaza and Refrigerate Kyurem-B. It is best to set up only after potential priority users have been dealt with or if Mega Gengar is under Psychic Terrain. Unaware Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Zygarde-C are able to completely wall this set if it lacks Moongeist Beam. Therefore, it is recommended that its teammates break through the aforementioned checks before it attempts a sweep. Certain threats can opt for options to circumvent the effects of Normalize to catch Mega Gengar off guard, with examples being Waterium Z Primal Kyogre and Revelation Dance Yveltal, meaning that Mega Gengar should scout for these options in order to prevent risking it being revenge killed.

Team Options

Pokemon that can take on Dark-types such as Mega Tyranitar, Mega Gyarados, and Yveltal are crucial. Fairy-types such as Mega Audino and Xerneas are great examples, as not only do they threaten out said Dark-types, the former can check Imposter-copied Mega Gengar through an Unaware set with Haze or Topsy-Turvy, while the latter can set up entry hazards with a Poison Heal set and prevent hazard removal from Dark-types with its STAB attacks, which helps Mega Gengar break through walls and KO Sturdy Shedinja. Partners that can take on priority moves can also be useful to have, as it eases Mega Gengar's capability to set up. Examples include Fur Coat Chansey, Psychic Surge Mega Mewtwo Y, and defensive Steel-types such as Registeel and Aegislash. Other setup sweepers such as Poison Heal Primal Kyogre and Triage Mega Rayquaza appreciate Mega Gengar's ability to weaken defensive walls, while they can threaten offensive Pokemon in return. Entry hazard removal or prevention is also vital in order to sustain Mega Gengar as much as possible. Partners such as Defog Giratina, Rapid Spin Solgaleo, and Magic Bounce Registeel are great examples of this.

Set Comments

Moves

Shell Smash is an incredible setup move that ensures that Mega Gengar outspeeds the entire unboosted metagame after one boost while also allowing it to hit incredibly hard. Judgment is a great STAB option when used in conjunction with Spooky Plate to allow Mega Gengar to Imposter-proof itself. Moongeist Beam is an alternative reliable STAB option for Dazzling and Adaptability sets that allows Mega Gengar to bypass abilities that would otherwise interrupt its sweep such as Unaware and Sturdy on Shedinja. Secret Sword is a great coverage move that grants Mega Gengar perfect neutral coverage alongside its Ghost-type attack, allowing it to hit targets such as Mega Tyranitar, Yveltal, Registeel, and Dialga for more damage. It also damages based on Defense, meaning that Mega Gengar can have a much easier time breaking through specially defensive walls. Sludge Wave is a secondary STAB option that is especially useful on Adaptability and Mold Breaker sets, as it allows Mega Gengar to break through Unaware users such as Mega Audino and Yveltal. Sludge Wave is also 4x resisted by Mega Gengar, meaning that it can still check Imposter as well. Spore is a great utility move best used alongside Dazzling sets, since it allows Mega Gengar to put foes such as Regenerator + Assault Vest Primal Kyogre and Yveltal to sleep, enabling it to have an easier time setting up.

Set Details

Mold Breaker is utilized to let Mega Gengar threaten more defensive teams, since it enables Mega Gengar to break through Unaware walls such as Yveltal, Arceus, Mega Gyarados, and Zygarde-C much more easily after one boost while also being able to target Sturdy Shedinja. It is also chosen over simply running Moongeist Beam because most of the aformentioned threats can otherwise take a boosted Moongeist Beam and threaten to revenge kill Mega Gengar in return. Adaptability is an option that grants Mega Gengar more power initially, allowing it to 2HKO defensive threats such as Registeel and Dialga after Stealth Rock with Spooky Plate Judgement. Dazzling is a great ability alongside Shell Smash, as it grants Mega Gengar an immunity to all forms of priority, meaning that it can have a much more easier time sweeping versus offensive teams. Mega Gengar is also immune to Fake Out and Extreme Speed, meaning it can defeat common Dazzling answers in Mold Breaker Regigiggas and Slaking. Spooky Plate is equipped alongside Judgement to grant Mega Gengar a Ghost-type STAB attack that cannot be copied by Imposter users that lack a Spooky Plate of their own. A Focus Sash can be equipped instead to effectively grant Mega Gengar one turn to set up on any one-hit move, which can be crucial since it has very low bulk that usually does not let it withstand neutral hits on its own. However, it leaves Mega Gengar much more vulnerable to Imposter. EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid nature to let Mega Gengar sweep much more easily.

Usage Tips

Mega Gengar is very susceptible to priority unless it chooses to run Dazzling, meaning that it should not begin to set up until all priority attackers have been KOed or if Psychic Terrain is up. Mega Gengar is only an effective sweeper late-game once its checks have been worn down or KOed, as it can easily be checked by threats such as Yveltal and Mega Gyarados if that is not the case. However, Adaptability sets can be used as early-game wallbreakers if needed be. Mega Gengar can usually net the necessary KOes after only one boost, but breaking through more defensive teams can require extra setup boosts. Depending what ability Mega Gengar chooses to run, it can be checked by different threats. For example, Mold Breaker sets cannot deal with priority users, while Dazzling sets struggle to break through Normal-type Unaware walls such as Mega Audino and Arceus. Therefore, bluffing what exact set Mega Gengar is using can be extremely advantageous, especially when bluffing Dazzling. Even with Dazzling, Mega Gengar is neutralized by Prankster Haze, so be wary of common users such as Registeel, Zygarde-C, and Mega Aggron, as they can prevent Mega Gengar from breaking through them. However, Taunt can be run to prevent them from using Haze, although this should only be run on Imposter-proof sets.

Team Options

Partners that can deal with priority moves such as defensive Steel-types like Solgaleo and Registeel can be useful partners due to non-Dazzling Mega Gengar sets being incredibly weak to them. Offensive Fairy-type Pokemon such as Mega Diancie and Xerneas are great partners as well, since they can break through common answers to Mega Gengar like Yveltal and Mega Audino. Additionally, Mega Gengar is able to target common answers to Fairy-types such as Solgaleo and Aegislash for high damage. Entry hazard removal is important for Mega Gengar as well, since it can help preserve its Focus Sash. Common examples include Giratina, Mega Audino, and Yveltal. Entry hazards are also useful, as they aid Mega Gengar in securing useful 2HKOs versus targets such as Yveltal, Zygarde-C, and Assault Vest Primal Kyogre after a boost; it can also be useful in removing Sturdy Shedinja as it comes onto the field. Powerful wallbreakers such as Choice Band Primal Groudon, Choice Specs Mega Rayquaza, and Tough Claws Mega Mewtwo X all appreciate Mega Gengar's capability to take down offensive threats after a setup boost, while they can all break through defensive walls in return. Knock Off support can also be quite viable, as partners carrying the move can get rid of items such as Safety Goggles, which blocks Spore.

Strategy Comments
Other Options

Perish Song can be used on Normalize sets alongside Anchor Shot to allow Mega Gengar to trap and KO opposing threats, while also ensuring it cannot be hit thanks to Entrainment. A set with No Guard + Sing is possible, due to Mega Gengar being able to use a STAB-boosted Hex attack alongside other coverage moves such as Focus Blast. Lovely Kiss can be used over Spore due to its capability to bypass Safety Goggles and Grass-types, but it is less accurate. Mega Gengar can benefit from Toxic Spikes support when equipped with Merciless, being able to break through defensive threats with boosted Hex and Venoshock. However, the set is quite inconsistent and difficult to pull off in practice if the opposing team is able to repeatably remove hazards. Mold Breaker sets can run Pursuit to trap and KO Sturdy Shedinja, but filling a moveslot for such a specific scenario can be difficult due to Mega Gengar already being pressed for moveslots.

Checks and Counters

[Mega Audino]:
Safety Goggles Unaware Mega Audino can wall almost all setup Mega Gengar sets that lack Sludge Wave and proceed to steal or neutralize its boosts with Spectral Thief or Haze. However, it does fear Entrainment sets if it is not running Magic Bounce.

[Magic Bounce]: Common Magic Bounce users such as Registeel, Arceus, and Zygarde-C can block the use of Entrainment, making Mega Gengar ineffective against these threats.

[Unaware Dark-types]: Unaware Dark-type Pokemon such as Yveltal and Mega Gyarados have the potential to wall setup sets besides the Mold Breaker variant due to them resisting Mega Gengar's main STAB attack. However, Mega Gengar can choose to run the combination of Mold Breaker and Moonblast to hit them hard.

[Priority]: Priority moves can threaten all Mega Gengar sets besides Dazzling variants due to Mega Gengar's frailty.

[Imposter with Earth Plate]: Imposter Chansey can run Earth Plate to catch Mega Gengar off guard and potentially proceed to sweep. However, this is assuming Chansey wins the Speed tie versus Mega Gengar, meaning it is not a reliable option.

[Faster Offensive Psychic-types]: Faster Psychic-types such as Mega Mewtwo Y and Deoxys-A can outspeed and KO unboosted Mega Gengar if its Focus Sash is broken.

[RegenVest Users]: Regenerator + Assault Vest users such as Mega Gyarados, Yveltal, Primal Kyogre, and Zygarde-C are all able to sustain at least one attack from Mega Gengar (sometimes even boosted ones) and can proceed to severely dent it. However, Mega Gengar can neutralize these threats with either Entrainment + Normalize or Spore.

[Pusuit]: Pursuit can be run on defensive pivots such as Mega Tyranitar, Yveltal, and Mega Gyarados to potentially KO Mega Gengar if it chooses to switch out.

[Knock Off]: Knock Off proves to be a hindrance to Mega Gengar, as not only is it hit super effectively by the move, but it also can lose its Spooky Plate, meaning that sets that rely on this item can no longer fire off STAB Ghost-type attacks.

[Normalize-ignoring Moves]: Revelation Dance and offensive Z-Moves from threats such as Yveltal, Mega Mewtwo Y, Zygarde-C, and Primal Kyogre can surprise Normalize Mega Gengar sets and potentially prevent it from sweeping.

Overview
  • Mega Gengar is one of the most deadliest offensive threats in the Balanced Hackmons metagame thanks to the combination of its high base 170 Special Attack and 130 Speed.
  • Great Ghost/Poison offensive typing that allows it to hit most of the metagame for at least neutral damage. It also grants it two immunities to Normal and Fighting-type attacks, giving it more switchin opportunities and allowing it to use Normalize and Imposterproof sets with Spooky Plate Judgement to great effect.
  • The introduction of priority blocking abilities such as Dazzling and Queenly Majesty also aid setup sweeping Mega Gengar sets from being checked by priority moves.
  • It can also abuse Shadow Tag when Mega Evolving manually, allowing it to be quite a nuisance for more defensive teams. The mega evolution turn mechanic buff also lets Shadow Tag Mega Gengar forego a Protection move, allowing it to be more versatile.
  • Mega Gengar is however weak to common offensive types such as Dark, Ground, and Ghost. It is also very frail, meaning that it usually cannot endure a hit coming from offensive pokemon.

Moves
  • Entrainment is the main crux to this set, as it allows Mega Gengar to effectively negate all damage towards it from any opposing Pokemon slower then it. It also has the benefit of overwriting popular abilities such as Poison Heal and Regenerator, which can be useful for crippling common abusers of these abilities such as Primal Kyogre and Solgaleo.
  • Judgement acts as the main STAB move of this set, as the move converts into a Ghost-type attack when equipped with a Spooky Plate. It also lets Mega Gengar Improof itself if the Chansey is not running a Spooky or Earth Plate itself.
  • Shell Smash is a great setup move that turns Mega Gengar into a deadly sweeper. It also works well in conjunction with Entrainment, as it gives it many opportunities to setup once the opposing Pokemon has acquired Normalize.
  • Substitute is a useful utility move that allows Mega Gengar to effectively take a hit and also works well with Entrainment, due to Mega Gengar usually forcing out switchins once it has given the opposing Pokemon its ability.
  • Revelation Dance is another STAB option that can work when equipped with a Fist Plate, as it also converts into a Ghost-type attack due to the mechanics of the move. It also allows Mega Gengar to fire off Fighting-type Judgement, which helps it deal with Dark-types much better. However, it cannot Improof itself when using this variant of the set.

Set Details
  • Normalize is used as it effectively allows Mega Gengar to neutralize any slower foes when used in conjunction with Entrainment.
  • Spooky Plate is equipped to turn Judgement into a Ghost-type attack, giving Mega Gengar a STAB option that cannot be emulated by Imposter Pokemon if they are not running Spooky Plate also.
  • Fist Plate is another option that allows Mega Gengar to abuse Fighting-type Judgement. Making conventional checks to this set such as Mega Tyranitar and Yveltal less reliable.
  • EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to turn Mega Gengar into a fast and powerful Special Attacker.

Usage Tips
  • Normalize Mega Gengar can shut down many common defensive walls such as Mega Audino, Solgaleo, Giratina, Zygarde-C, and Dialga. Therefore its best used as a pseudo-wallbreaker that can weaken down the aforementioned pokemon, allowing other setup sweepers to have a much more easier time performing their role.
  • However, Magic Bounce can be run on any of the mentioned Pokemon above to be able to bounce back the effects of Entrainment, disallowing Mega Gengar to break through these threats. Thus scouting Magic Bounce on these defensive Pokemon is key in order to use Mega Gengar efficiently.
  • Even after setting up a Shell Smash, Mega Gengar is still prone to be checked by priority users such as Triage Mega Rayquaza and Refrigerate Kyurem-B. It is best to setup only after potential priority users have been dealt with.
  • Unaware Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Zygarde-C are able to completely wall this set. However, they can't do much in return after being inflicted with Entrainment unless they possess moves such as Haze or Whirlwind. Zygarde-C can also opt to run Groundium Z, which can still hit Mega Gengar due to it converting its Ground-type STAB.

Team Options
  • Pokemon that can take on Dark-types such as Mega Tyranitar, Mega Gyarados, and Yveltal are crucial if Mega Gengar is not running Fist Plate. Fairy-types such as Mega Audino and Xerneas are great examples as not only do they threaten out the aforementioned threats, but they former can Improof Mega Gengar with an Unaware set, while the latter can setup entry hazards which helps it break through walls and KO Sturdy Shedinja.
  • Partners that can take on priority moves can also be useful to have, as it eases Mega Gengar's capability to setup. Examples include Soundproof Mega Slowbro, Psychic Surge Mega Mewtwo Y, and defensive Steel-types such as Registeel and Aegislash.
  • Magic Bounce Mega Tyranitar is another great example of a Pokemon that can Improof Mega Gengar. If the Mega Gengar is holding a Fist Plate with Revelation Dance, Mega Tyranitar is able to resist every attacking move coming of the Imposter Mega Gengar and also does not fear of Entrainment, meaning it can deal super effective damage with moves such as Knock Off and Pursuit.
  • Other setup sweepers such as Poison Heal Primal Kyogre and Contrary Mega Rayquaza appreciate Mega Gengar's ability to weaken down defensive walls, while they can threaten offensive pokemon in return.
  • Entry hazard removal is also vital in order to sustain Mega Gengar as much as possible due to its weakness to Spikes. Partners such as Defog Giratina, Rapid Spin Solgaleo, and Defog Registeel are all great examples of this.

Moves
  • Moongeist Beam is a reliable STAB option that allows Mega Gengar to bypass abilities that would otherwise interrupt its sweep such as Unaware and Sturdy on Shedinja.
  • Judgement is another STAB option when used in conjunction with Spooky Plate to allow Mega Gengar to improof itself.
  • Secret Sword is a great coverage move that grants Mega Gengar perfect neutral coverage alongside its Ghost STAB, allowing it to hit targets such as Mega Tyranitar, Yveltal, Registeel, and Dialga for more damage. It also hits on the physical side, meaning that Mega Gengar can have a much more easier time breaking through specially defensive walls.
  • Shell Smash is an incredible setup boosting move that ensures that Mega Gengar outspeeds all the unboosted metagame after one boost, while also allowing it to hit incredibly hard as well.
  • Spore is a great utility move that allows Mega Gengar to put foes to sleep, allowing it to have an easier time setting up.
  • Sludge Wave is an alternative STAB option that is especially useful on Adaptability sets, as it allows Mega Gengar to ensure the 2HKO on Unaware Mega Audino.

Set Details

  • Mold Breaker is an alternative ability that can be more useful versus defensive teams, as it allows Mega Gengar to break through Unaware walls such as Yveltal, Arceus, Mega Gyarados, and Zygarde-C much more easily after one setup boost while also being able to target Sturdy Shedinja if it chooses to run Judgement.
  • Adaptability is another option that grants Mega Gengar more power initially, allowing it to 2HKO defensive threats such as Primal Groudon, Xerneas, and Zygarde-C after Stealth Rocks.
  • A Focus Sash is equipped to effectively grant Mega Gengar one turn to setup against any single-attacking move against it, which can be crucial since it has very low bulk that usually does not let it withstand neutral hits on its own.
  • Spooky Plate can be used instead alongside Judgement to grant Mega Gengar a Ghost-type STAB attack that cannot be copied by Imposter unless it chooses to run a Spooky Plate of its own.

Usage Tips
  • Mega Gengar is very susceptible to priority unless it chooses to run Dazzling, meaning that it should not begin to setup until all priority attackers on the opposing teams have been KOed.
  • Mega Gengar is an effective sweeper lategame once its approprioates checks have been worn down/KOed, as it can easily be stopped if thats not the case. However, Adaptability sets can be used as an early game wallbreaker if needed be.
  • It can usually net the necessary KOes after only one boost, although breaking through more defensive teams can be a bit more of a task which may require extra setup boosts to break through.
  • Depending what ability Mega Gengar chooses to run, it can be checked by different threats. For example, Mold Breaker sets cannot deal with priority users, while Dazzling sets struggle to break through Normal-type Unaware walls such as Mega Audino and Arceus.
  • Even with Dazzling, Mega Gengar is subjected to Prankster Haze, so be weary of common users such as Registeel, Zygarde-C, and Mega Aggron, as they can all prevent Mega Gengar from breaking through them.

Team Options
  • Partners that can deal with priority moves such as defensive Steel-types like Solgaleo and Registeel can be useful partners, due to non-Dazzling Mega Gengar sets being incredibly weak to it.

Additionally, Mega Gengar is able to target common answers to Fairy-types such as Registeel and Primal Groudon for high damage in return.
  • Entry hazard removal support is important for Mega Gengar as well, since it can help preserve its Focus Sash. Common examples include Giratina, Mega Audino, and Mega Tyranitar.
  • Entry hazards are also useful, as it aids Mega Gengar in securing useful 2HKOes versus targets such as Yveltal, Zygarde-C, and Assault Vest Primal Kyogre after a setup boost, It can also be useful in removing Sturdy Shedinja as it comes onto the field.
  • Powerful wallbreakers such as Choice Band Primal Groudon, Choice Specs Mega Rayquaza, and Tough Claws Mega Mewtwo X all appreciate Mega Gengar's capability on taking down offensive threats after a setup boost, while they can all break through defensive walls in return.

[Shadow Tag]
Gengar @ Gengarite
Ability: Illusion
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Perish Song
- Encore
- Ice Beam / Moongeist Beam
- Strength Sap / Disable

Set Comments

Moves
  • Perish Song is the main focus on this set, as in conjunction with Shadow Tag, Mega Gengar can effectively take down any foe as long as it is able to stall out 2 turns.
  • Encore is a great utility move to use alongside Perish Song, as it can let Mega Gengar setup Perish Song and stall out turns much more easily if the foe is locked into a move that does not effect Mega Gengar immensely.
  • Ice Beam is a great coverage move that allows Mega Gengar to potentially KO common offensive and defensive threats such as Mega Rayquaza (if it lacks priority moves) and Zygarde-C respectably.
  • Moongeist Beam is an alternative option that grants Mega Gengar a STAB attack, letting it be able to do a bit more damage versus pokemon such as Registeel, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre.
  • Strength Sap is a great recovery move that allows Mega Gengar to trap physical attackers such as Yveltal, Mega Gyarados, and Solgaleo much more easily.
  • Disable is another utility option that grants it the ability to negate the use of potential harmful attacks towards it, making it easier to setup Perish Song. It also works well in conjunction with Encore, as when used systematically, it can force the opponent to Struggle.

Set Details
  • Gengarite is required to be used on this set, as it allows Gengar to manually Mega Evolve and acquire Shadow Tag.
  • Illusion works wonderfully with manual Mega Evolution, as it allows regular Gengar to mask its presence. This means that it can trick the opposing Pokemon into thinking it is not there, and can proceed to trap the targeted threat after Mega Evolving the next turn.
  • EVs are maxed out in every stat besides Attack with a Timid Nature to ensure Mega Gengar sustains as much health as possible while being attacked, while also being able to outspeed the majority of the metagame.

Usage Tips
  • At the beginning of the match, your opponent can already decipher that it is a Shadow Tag Mega Gengar variant due to their being no other reason to run regular Gengar. This can prevent Mega Gengar upon trapping as many threats as it wants to due to your opponent possibly playing more wearily around it. However, Illusion can still help mask when Gengar is on the battlefield.
  • Mega Gengar strives on trapping defensive targets such as Solgaleo, Mega Audino, Zygarde-C, Dialga, and Xerneas due to these threats usually carrying utility moves that do not effect Mega Gengar such as Defog, Rapid Spin, and any recovery move. This means that Mega Gengar can Encore these aforementioned Pokemon into these moves, and proceed to knock them out with Perish Song.
  • While Mega Gengar can Encore the opponent to weak neutral attacks against it such as Scald, Ice Beam, and Knock Off, its pitiful bulk still requires the player to be extra cautious on letting it fall too low on health. This is stressed even more if Mega Gengar chooses to run Disable, as it foregoes recovery and becomes susceptible upon being weared down.
  • The opponent can predict if the user if Gengar through Illusion by notifying aspects such as entry hazards residual damage and status conditions. Therefore it can be detrimental to place the last teammember as a Poison Heal user or one who does not share the same entry hazard weaknesses as Gengar.
  • Shadow Tag Mega Gengar is useful on more defensive teams, acting as a means to trap and KO annoying threats to these type of teams such as Mega Rayquaza, Registeel, Mega Audino, defensive Primal Kyogre, Solgaleo, and Arceus.

Team Options
  • Mega Gengar appreciates partners that can deal with faster threats that it cannot trap such as Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Sceptile, Deoxys-A, Choice Scarf Primal Groudon, and Pheromosa. Example of useful defensive walls include Mega Audino, Registeel, Giratina, and Zygarde-C.
  • Entry hazard removal support is crucial, as it allows Gengar to benefit from the effects of Illusion as much as possible due to entry hazard damage not being a revealing factor present.
  • Pokemon that can sustain priority attacks such as Solgaleo, Soundproof Mega Slowbro, and Ferrothorn can also be useful due to Mega Gengar's deceptive weakness to these type of moves.
  • Besides these options, Shadow Tag Mega Gengar is a threat that can mainly sustain itself usually, which is why it is so dangerous.

Strategy Comments
Other Options
  • Mega Gengar can choose to run a offensive Shadow Tag set, running coverage moves such as Secret Sword, Blue Flare, and Earth Power that allows it to trap and KO more threats.
  • A set with No Guard + Sing is possible, due to Mega Gengar being able to abuse a boosted STAB Hex attack, alongside other coverage moves such as Inferno and Blizzard.
  • A Baton Pass Shadow Tag Mega Gengar set with Shell Smash can also be quite potent, due to Mega Gengar being able to setup against defensive threats and then proceed to pass boosts towards other offensive threats.
  • Lovely Kiss can be used over sets with Spore due to its capability to bypass Safety Goggles and Grass-types, however it is less accurate.
  • Quiver Dance can be used over Shell Smash on setup boosting sets to allow Mega Gengar to setup more relaibly due to the added bulk, however it not usually preffered due to it being less immediate then Shell Smash.
  • Mold Breaker sets can run Pursuit to trap and KO Sturdy Shedinja, however wasting a moveslot for such a specific scenario can be difficult due to Mega Gengar already being pressed for moveslots.

Checks and Counters

[Mega Audino]:
Unaware Mega Audino can wall all setup boosting Mega Gengar sets that lack Sludge Wave, and either proceed to steal or neutralize its boosts with Spectral Thief and Haze respectably. However, it does fear Entrainment sets if it is not running Magic Bounce.
[Magic Bounce]: Common Magic Bounce users such as Mega Tyranitar, Giratina, and Zygarde-C can block the use of Entrainment towards them, making Mega Gengar ineffective against these threats.

[Unaware Dark-types]: Unaware Dark-type pokemon such as Yveltal and Alolan-Muk have the potential to wall setup boosting sets besides the Mold Breaker variant due to them resisting Mega Gengar's main STAB attack. However, Mega Gengar can choose to run Moonblast to hit the former for more damage and can run Spore to hit the ladder.

[Priority]: Priority moves can threaten all Mega Gengar sets besides Dazzling variants due to Mega Gengar's frail stats.

[Imposter with Spooky or Earth Plate]: Imposter Chansey can choose to run Spooky or Earth Plate to lure Mega Gengar and potentially proceed to sweep.

[Faster Offensive Psychic-types]: Faster Psychic-types such as Mega Mewtwo Y and Deoxys-A can outspeed and KO unboosted Mega Gengar if it has broken its Focus Sash.
Ok this is ready for QC

Also QY_CS u can add Choice Specs Mega Rayquaza as a main set.

As the only threat that can equip Shadow Tag, it can choose an unescapable matchup and elmiminate them, opening the way for its allies to take care of the rest of the team.
  • Mega Gengar is however weak to common offensive types such as Dark, Ground, and Ghost. It is also very frail, meaning that it usually cannot endure a hit coming from offensive pokemon. Also very susecptible to priority.

- Entrainment
- Judgment
- Shell Smash / Quiver Dance
- Substitute / Revelation Dance

Set Comments

Moves
  • Entrainment is the main crux to this set, as it allows Mega Gengar to effectively negate all damage towards it from any opposing Pokemon slower then it. It also scouts the ability which is very crucial in the BH, since the metagame does not provide ability initially.
  • Quiver Dance is an option that can be chosen if one does not prefer defense drops and keep Gengar safer against Triage Rayquaza in exchange of less immediate boost of power.

Psychic Surge also lets it have an opportunity to set up and attack without fearing priority.

To be more precise, the ones that can deal with -ate users can be a partner, as well as their slow speed lets Gengar switch in without harm.

[Shell Smash Sweeper]
Gengar-Mega @ Focus Sash / Spooky Plate

- Secret Sword
- Shell Smash
- Spore / Sludge Wave

Set Comments

Set Details
  • Dazzling is a great ability alongside Shell Smash, as it grants Mega Gengar an immunity to all forms of priority, meaning that it can have a much more easier time sweeping versus more offensive teams.
As well as achieving crucial OHKO on Mega Rayquaza with Moongeist Beam at +2.
  • A Focus Sash is equipped to effectively grant Mega Gengar one turn to setup against any single-attacking move against it, which can be crucial since it has very low bulk that usually does not let it withstand neutral hits on its own. It also helps when Gengar lowered its already low defense to even worse degree with Shell Smash.
  • Spooky Plate can be used instead alongside Judgement to grant Mega Gengar a Ghost-type STAB attack that cannot be copied by Imposter unless it chooses to run a Spooky Plate of its own.
  • EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to let Mega Gengar sweep much more easily.

Usage Tips
  • Mega Gengar is very susceptible to priority unless it chooses to run Dazzling, meaning that it should not begin to setup until all priority attackers on the opposing teams have been KOed. Therefore, Psychic Surge support is recommended if one opts to run Gengar without Dazzling.

  • Offensive Fairy-type pokemon such as Mega Diancie and Xerneas are great partners as well, since they can break through common answers to Mega Gengar with examples being Yveltal and Mega Audino.
  • Knock Off support can also be quite viable, as partners carrying the move can get rid of items such as Safety Goggles which can potentially block the use of Spore.

[Shadow Tag]
Gengar @ Gengarite

Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Perish Song
- Encore
- Ice Beam / Moongeist Beam
- Strength Sap / Disable

Set Comments

Moves
  • Perish Song is the main focus of this set, as in conjunction with Shadow Tag, Mega Gengar can effectively take down any foe as long as it is able to stall out 2 turns.

  • Mega Gengar can choose to run an offensive Shadow Tag set, running coverage moves such as Secret Sword, Blue Flare, and Earth Power that allows it to trap and KO more threats.

Safety Goggles Unaware Mega Audino can wall all setup boosting Mega Gengar sets that lack Sludge Wave, and either proceed to steal or neutralize its boosts with Spectral Thief and Haze respectably.

I honestly don't have much things to say. You already have so much experience and familiarity with this 'mon and I would say just add few things I noted so beginners will have easy time understanding them as well.

I would give QC check if I were able. Overall, excellent analysis.

Also someone please make at least AM QC check on Kyurem-W and Garchomp please?
I wasn't doing anything other than AM QC for last 2 weeks lmao.

Overview
  • Mega Gengar is one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the Balanced Hackmons metagame thanks to the combination of its high base 170 Special Attack and 130 Speed.
  • Great Ghost/Poison offensive typing that allows it to hit most of the metagame for at least neutral damage. It also grants it two immunities to Normal and Fighting-type attacks, giving it more switchin opportunities and allowing it to use Normalize and Imposterproof sets with Spooky Plate Judgement to great effect.resist to fairy is worth noting
  • The introduction of priority blocking abilities such as Dazzling and Queenly Majesty also aid setup sweeping Mega Gengar sets from being checked by priority moves.also worth noting is the introduction of moongeist
  • It can also abuse Shadow Tag when Mega Evolving manually, allowing it to be quite a nuisance for more defensive teams. The mega evolution turn mechanic buff also lets Shadow Tag Mega Gengar forego a Protection move, allowing it to be more versatile.
  • Mega Gengar is however weak to common offensive types such as Dark, Ground, and Ghostreplace ghost with psychic, ghost isn't particularly common. It is also very frail, meaning that it usually cannot endure a hit coming from offensive pokemon.

I'm not sure about revelation dance + fight judge, if you really want coverage run boomburst but losing to chansey really ain't worth it. among normal types you beat gigas and slaking anyway. Even with revelation dance I think poison judg would fit better to hit audino and ybird harder (+2 OHKOs after rocks if not unaware and if unaware you can entraiment anyway)

Anyway you might want to just stick to spooky and toss the rest in oo

quiver dance can be used cause entrainment gar doesn't mind slow set up as much and it can survive stuff like owing and pixie priority, ks can help against any other priority but isn't necessary to run alongside quiver dance

you can also mention skill swap with judg + secret sword and perishtrap with anchor shot in oo

However, it cannot Improof itself when using this variant of the set.
that's good for now but you might have to do changes with any changes that you do with the main set

Making conventional checks to this set such as Mega Tyranitar and Yveltal less reliable. they only check if magic bounce
  • EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to turn Mega Gengar into a fast and powerful Special Attacker.

Usage Tips
  • Normalize Mega Gengar can shut down many common defensive walls such as Mega Audinodoes it shut down audino?, Solgaleo, Giratina, Zygarde-C, and Dialga. Therefore its best used as a pseudo-wallbreaker that can weaken down the aforementioned pokemon, allowing other setup sweepers to have a much more easier time performing their role. it's also really hard to answer outside of magic bounce so bulky mons like slaking that would otherwise check just lose
  • However, Magic Bounce can be run on any of the mentioned Pokemon above to be able to bounce back the effects of Entrainment, disallowing Mega Gengar to break through these threats. Thus scouting Magic Bounce on these defensive Pokemon is key in order to use Mega Gengar efficiently.worth noting that gengar can still threaten or pressure some of them out even if they have mb because it has great damage output
  • Even after setting up a Shell Smash, Mega Gengar is still prone to be checked by priority users such as Triage Mega Rayquaza and Refrigerate Kyurem-B. It is best to setup only after potential priority users have been dealt with.or with psychic terrain support
  • Unaware Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Zygarde-C unaware is removed by entrainment so no, they kinda don't wall this set entirely, just normal types and some magic bounce mons are able to completely wall this set. However, they can't do much in return after being inflicted with Entrainment unless they possess moves such as Haze or Whirlwind. Zygarde-C can also opt to run Groundium Z, which can still hit Mega Gengar due to it converting its Ground-type STAB.more generally you should mention that gengar should be wary of ways to avoid normalize, z moves being one option, zygarde is an abuser but other mons can also try to catch it off guard like fur coat ogre with waterium. Revelation dance also fits in that category albeit rarer, mmy can switch on a predicted entrainment and kill with rev dance

  • Other setup sweepers such as Poison Heal Primal Kyogre and Contrary Mega Rayquaza contrary ray is quite a wallbreaker itself, regigias or triage ray appreciate gengar quite a bit appreciate Mega Gengar's ability to weaken down defensive walls, while they can threaten offensive pokemon in return.

  • Judgement is another STAB option when used in conjunction with Spooky Plate to allow Mega Gengar to improof idk if improof is an accepted therm btw itself.
  • Spore is a great utility move that allows Mega Gengar to put foes to sleep, allowing it to have an easier time setting up.best paired with mold breaker as gengar isn't running goggles itself, also quite good against regenvest mons like ogre
  • Sludge Wave is an alternative STAB option that is especially useful on Adaptability sets, as it allows Mega Gengar to ensure the 2HKO on Unaware Mega Audino.also ohkos PH ybird at +2
also say that sludge wave is double resisted so it's still improof

Set Details
  • Dazzling is a great ability alongside Shell Smash, as it grants Mega Gengar an immunity to all forms of priority, meaning that it can have a much more easier time sweeping versus more offensive teams.
  • Mold Breaker is an alternative ability that can be more useful versus defensive teams, as it allows Mega Gengar to break through Unaware walls such as Yveltal, Arceus, Mega Gyarados, and Zygarde-C much more easily after one setup boost while also being able to target Sturdy Shedinja if it chooses to run Judgement.moongeist should not be run on moldy set, might want to make that clearer in moves, moldy gar should always run spoopy judgement
  • Adaptability is another option that grants Mega Gengar more power initially, allowing it to 2HKO defensive threats such as Primal Groudon, Xerneas, and Zygarde-C after Stealth Rocks.groudon is already 2HKOd by non adapt judg, same for xern after rocks. Should me more clear about what moves you use everytime. Adapt is also mainly used to take on common answers like audino and ybird
  • EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to let Mega Gengar sweep much more easily.

Usage Tips
  • Mega Gengar is very susceptible to priority unless it chooses to run Dazzling, meaning that it should not begin to setup until all priority attackers on the opposing teams have been KOed.or psychic terrain is up
  • Mega Gengar is an effective sweeper lategame once its approprioates checks have been worn down/KOed, as it can easily be stopped if thats not the case.
For example, Mold Breaker sets cannot deal with priority users, while Dazzling sets struggle to break through Normal-type Unaware walls such as Mega Audino and Arceus.bluffing sets can be useful, especially bluffing dazzling
  • Even with Dazzling, Mega Gengar is subjected to Prankster Haze, so be weary of common users such as Registeel, Zygarde-C, and Mega Aggron, as they can all prevent Mega Gengar from breaking through them.gengar can pass that with taunt although you should mostly only run that on improof sets

Team Options
  • Partners that can deal with priority moves such as defensive Steel-types like Solgaleo and Registeel can be useful partners, due to non-Dazzling Mega Gengar sets being incredibly weak to it.
  • Offensive Fairy-type pokemon such as Mega Diancie and Xerneas are great partners as well, since they can break through common answers to Mega Gengar with examples being Yveltal and Mega Audino. Additionally, Mega Gengar is able to target common answers to Fairy-types such as Registeel and Primal Groudon for high damage in return.I'd mention solgaleo instead of registeel
  • Entry hazard removal support is important for Mega Gengar as well, since it can help preserve its Focus Sash. Common examples include Giratina, Mega Audino, and Mega Tyranitar.
  • Entry hazards are also useful, as it aids Mega Gengar in securing useful 2HKOes versus targets such as Yveltal, Zygarde-C, and Assault Vest Primal Kyogre after a setup boost, It can also be useful in removing Sturdy Shedinja as it comes onto the field. there's no way gengar can OHKO av ogre
  • Knock Off support can also be quite viable, as partners carrying the move can get rid of items such as Safety Goggles which can potentially block the use of Spore.

also worth mentioning somewhere that dazzling gar is immune to moldy fakespeed

-Strength Sap / Disable

Set Comments

Moves
  • Perish Song is the main focus of this set, as in conjunction with Shadow Tag, Mega Gengar can effectively take down any foe as long as it is able to stall out 2 turns.
  • Encore is a great utility move to use alongside Perish Song, as it can let Mega Gengar setup Perish Song and stall out turns much more easily if the foe is locked into a move that does not effect Mega Gengar immensely.usually you first lock a mon in a useless move and then you perish song, ideally you switch on a mon as it uses a recovery move and then encore
  • Ice Beam is a great coverage move that allows Mega Gengar to potentially trap and KO common offensive and defensive threats such as Mega Rayquaza (if it lacks priority moves)ray can't kill you with any prio, even adamant life orb espeed doesn't OHKO and Zygarde-C respectably.
  • Moongeist Beam is an alternative option that grants Mega Gengar a STAB attack, letting it be able to do a bit more damage versus pokemon such as Registeel, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre.also hits ghost types which it can't perish trap
It also works well in conjunction with Encore, as when used systematically, it can force the opponent to Struggle. spiky shield + disable is good against regenvest mons as you can protect on uturn and then disable

However, Illusion can still help mask when Gengar is on the battlefield.in general mega evolve as early as possible unless there's a specific mon you want to trick with illusion (for example baiting out a switchin to a mon and trapping it)
  • Mega Gengar strives on trapping defensive targets such as Solgaleo, Mega Audino, Zygarde-C, Dialga, and Xerneas due to these threats usually carrying utility moves that do not effect Mega Gengar such as Defog, Rapid Spin, and any recovery move.
  • generaly try to inflige significant damage with your other members to force the switchins to recover and switch gengar on the turn they recover to encore them in it. Uturn on your other mons is also appreciated in that aspect as you can scout what move they go for and make sure gengar can encore it into
  • shadow tag gengar can be heavily tailored towards trapping specific threats that teams struggle with so a lot of different move combinations can be run

  • Entry hazard removal support is crucial, as it allows Gengar to benefit from the effects of Illusion as much as possible due to entry hazard damage not being a revealing factor present.crucial is a bit of an exageration, most things in bh take neutral sr anyway and illusion isn't the main appeal of the set. I'd use the word "appreciated"
  • Pokemon that can sustain priority attacks such as Solgaleo, Soundproof Mega Slowbro, and Ferrothorn can also be useful due to Mega Gengar's deceptive weakness to these type of moves.not particularly relevant as gengar isn't meant to sweep, just pick off foes one by one
  • Besides these options, Shadow Tag Mega Gengar is a threat that can mainly sustain itself usually, which is why it is so dangerous.
  • other wallbreakers like triage rayquaza pair really well as it can force their counters to recover and gengar can trap them on their recovery move to remove them.
  • Gengar can also be used to trap your own mons to remove imposter chansey, especially if you give your mons moves that don't damage gengar but that imposter will be tempted to click such as substitute on a sweeper, recovery in general, defog, hazards or toxic
  • Eject button on defensive teamates can be used to deny uturn from regenvest pokemon and bring in gengar safely to disable the pivoting move and perishtrap them

Strategy Comments
Other Options
  • Mega Gengar can choose to run an offensive Shadow Tag set, running coverage moves such as Secret Sword, Blue Flare, and Earth Power that allows it to trap and KO more threats.or whatever fits your team best
  • A set with No Guard + Sing is possible, due to Mega Gengar being able to abuse a boosted STAB Hex attack, alongside other coverage moves such as Inferno and Blizzard.no, just because you have no guard doesn't mean you only need inacurate moves, inflicting other status might actually be detrimental in a lot of cases as you can't sleep them. Focus blast is great coverage alongside hex

Safety Goggles Unaware Mega Audino can wall allmost* setup boosting Mega Gengar sets that lack Sludge Wave, and either proceed to steal or neutralize its boosts with Spectral Thief and Haze respectably. However, it does fear Entrainment sets if it is not running Magic Bounce.

[Magic Bounce]: Common Magic Bounce users such as Mega Tyranitar, Giratina, and Zygarde-C can block the use of Entrainment towards them, making Mega Gengar ineffective against these threats.not so much giratina as gengar still hits it hard
magic bounce also stops encore form the trapping set

[Unaware Dark-types]: Unaware Dark-type pokemon such as Yveltal and Alolan-Muk have the potential to wall setup boosting sets besides the Mold Breaker variant due to them resisting Mega Gengar's main STAB attack. However, Mega Gengar can choose to run Moonblast to hit the former for more damage and can run Spore to hit the ladder.

[Priority]: Priority moves can threaten all Mega Gengar sets besides Dazzling variants due to Mega Gengar's frail stats.

[Imposter with Spooky or Earth Plate]: Imposter Chansey can choose to run Spooky or Earth Plate to lure Mega Gengar and potentially proceed to sweep.but gengar can OHKO opposing imposter after ss so it's still a tie

[Faster Offensive Psychic-types]: Faster Psychic-types such as Mega Mewtwo Y and Deoxys-A can outspeed and KO unboosted Mega Gengar if it has broken its Focus Sash.

pursuit and regenvest users
Pretty good, I want other qc to take a look at the first set but other than that, implement and then qc1.

It also grants it a resistance to Fairy and two immunities to Normal and Fighting-type attacks, giving it more switchin opportunities and allowing it to use Normalize and Imposterproof sets with Spooky Plate Judgement to great effect.
  • The introduction of priority blocking abilities such as Dazzling and Queenly Majesty also aid setup sweeping Mega Gengar sets from being checked by priority moves. This generation also brought forth a great new STAB option for Mega Gengar in Moongeist Beam, allowing to effectively bypass certain Unaware pokemon such as Xerneas and Mega Steelix and Sturdy Shedinja, threats that it had a difficult time breaking through previously.
  • It can also abuse Shadow Tag when Mega Evolving manually, allowing it to be quite a nuisance for more defensive teams. The mega evolution turn mechanic buff also lets Shadow Tag Mega Gengar forego a Protection move, allowing it to be more versatile.
  • Mega Gengar is however weak to common offensive types such as Dark, Ground, and Psychic. It is also very frail, meaning that it usually cannot endure a hit coming from offensive pokemon.

[Normalize]
Gengar-Mega @ Spooky Plate
Ability: Normalize
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpA / 252 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Entrainment
- Judgment
- Shell Smash / Quiver Dance
- Taunt / King's Shield

Set Comments

Moves
  • Entrainment is the main crux to this set, as it allows Mega Gengar to effectively negate all damage towards it from any opposing Pokemon slower then it.
  • Quiver Dance is another great setup move that allows Mega Gengar to sustain itself more durably thanks to the increase in Special Defense ontop of it not lowering its defensive stats unlike Shell Smash. However, Mega Gengar gives up the immediate power and speed that Shell Smash provides it.
  • Taunt is a great utility move that allows Mega Gengar to prevent defensive pokemon from recovering or using other status moves such as Haze and Whilwhind. It also works well alongside Entrainment, as Mega Gengar can completely nullify the opposing pokemon from using any type of moves towards it due to the stack of both restrictions.
  • King's Shield allows Mega Gengar to protect itself from physical priority moves such as Fake Out and Extreme Speed, and can proceed to take the hit the proceeding turn thanks to the -2 in Attack it provides if the foe comes in contact with it.

Set Details
  • Normalize is used as it effectively allows Mega Gengar to neutralize any slower foes when used in conjunction with Entrainment.
  • Spooky Plate is equipped to turn Judgement into a Ghost-type attack, giving Mega Gengar a STAB option that cannot be emulated by Imposter Pokemon if they are not running Spooky Plate as well.
  • EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to turn Mega Gengar into a fast and powerful Special Attacker.

Usage Tips
  • Normalize Mega Gengar can shut down many common defensive walls such as Registeel, Solgaleo, Giratina, Zygarde-C, and Dialga. Therefore its best used as a pseudo-wallbreaker that can weaken down the aforementioned pokemon, allowing other setup sweepers to have a much more easier time performing their role since it necessitates specific counterplay, meaning that threats such as Slaking and Regigiggas that are normally able to check it are no longer effective.
But, Mega Gengar can still pressure some of the aforementioned threats solely with its damage output alone.
  • Even after setting up a Shell Smash, Mega Gengar is still prone to be checked by priority users such as Triage Mega Rayquaza and Refrigerate Kyurem-B. It is best to setup only after potential priority users have been dealt with, or if Mega Gengar is under Psychic Terrain.
  • Unaware Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Zygarde-C are able to completely wall this set. However, they can't do much in return after being inflicted with Entrainment unless they possess moves such as Haze or Whirlwind.
  • Certain threats can opt for options to circumvent the effects of Normalize to catch Mega Gengar off guard, with examples being Waterium Z Primal Kyogre and Revelation Dance Mega Mewtwo Y.
  • Other setup sweepers such as Poison Heal Primal Kyogre and Triage Mega Rayquaza appreciate Mega Gengar's ability to weaken down defeive walls, while they can threaten offensive pokemon in return.
  • Entry hazard removal is also vital in order to sustain Mega Gengar as much as possible due to its weakness to Spikes. Partners such as Defog Giratina, Rapid Spin Solgaleo, and Defog Registeel are all great examples of this.

[Shell Smash Sweeper]

- Secret Sword
- Shell Smash
- Spore / Sludge Wave

Set Comments

Moves
  • Moongeist Beam is a reliable STAB option for Dazzling and Adaptability sets that allows Mega Gengar to bypass abilities that would otherwise interrupt its sweep such as Unaware and Sturdy on Shedinja.
  • Judgement is another STAB option when used in conjunction with Spooky Plate to allow Mega Gengar to Imposter proof itself.
  • Spore is a great utility move best used alongside Mold Breaker sets since Mega Gengar is not running Safety Goggles itseld. It allows Mega Gengar to put foes such as RegenVest Primal Kyogre and Mega Gyaradis to sleep, enabling it to have an easier time setting up.
  • Sludge Wave is an alternative STAB option that is especially useful on Adaptability sets, as it allows Mega Gengar to ensure the 2HKO on Unaware Mega Audino and OHKO Poison Heal Yveltal at +2. Sludge Wave is also 4x resisted by Mega Gengar, meaning that it is a viable option on Imposter proof sets.

Set Details
  • Dazzling is a great ability alongside Shell Smash, as it grants Mega Gengar an immunity to all forms of priority, meaning that it can have a much more easier time sweeping versus more offensive teams. Mega Gengar is also immune to Fake Out and Extreme Speed, meaning it can defeat common Dazzling answers in Mold Breaker Regigiggas and Slaking.
  • Mold Breaker is an alternative ability that can be more useful versus defensive teams, as it allows Mega Gengar to break through Unaware walls such as Yveltal, Arceus, Mega Gyarados, and Zygarde-C much more easily after one setup boost while also being able to target Sturdy Shedinja.
  • Adaptability is another option that grants Mega Gengar more power initially, allowing it to 2HKO defensive threats such as Registeel and Zygarde-C after Stealth Rocks with Spooky Plate Judgement
  • Spooky Plate is equipped alongside Judgement to grant Mega Gengar a Ghost-type STAB attack that cannot be copied by Imposter unless it chooses to run a Spooky Plate of its own.
  • A Focus Sash can be equipped instead to effectively grant Mega Gengar one turn to setup against any single-attacking move against it, which can be crucial since it has very low bulk that usually does not let it withstand neutral hits on its own.
  • EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to let Mega Gengar sweep much more easily.

Usage Tips
  • Mega Gengar is very susceptible to priority unless it chooses to run Dazzling, meaning that it should not begin to setup until all priority attackers on the opposing teams have been KOed or if Psychic Terrain is up.
Therefore bluffing what exact set Mega Gengar is can be extremely advantageous, especially bluffing Dazzling.
  • Even with Dazzling, Mega Gengar is subjected to Prankster Haze, so be weary of common users such as Registeel, Zygarde-C, and Mega Aggron, as they can all prevent Mega Gengar from breaking through them. However, Taunt can be run to prevent the aforementioned checks from using Haze, although this should only be run on Imposter proof sets.

Additionally, Mega Gengar is able to target common answers to Fairy-types such as Solgaleo and Primal Groudon for high damage in return.
  • Knock Off support can also be quite viable, as partners carrying the move can get rid of items such as Safety Goggles which can potentially block the use of Spore.

Moves
  • Perish Song is the main focus of this set, as in conjunction with Shadow Tag, Mega Gengar can effectively take down any foe as long as it is able to stall out 2 turns.
  • Encore is a great utility move to use alongside Perish Song, as it can let Mega Gengar lock foes into a move that does not effect Mega Gengar immensely, and proceed to setup Perish Song.
  • Ice Beam is a great coverage move that allows Mega Gengar to potentially trap and KO common offensive and defensive threats such as Mega Rayquaza and Zygarde-C respectably.
  • Moongeist Beam is an alternative option that grants Mega Gengar a STAB attack, letting it be able to do a bit more damage versus pokemon such as Registeel, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre. It also allows Mega Gengar to hit Ghost-types, which do not get trapped by Shadow Tag.
  • Strength Sap is a great recovery move that allows Mega Gengar to trap physical attackers such as Yveltal, Mega Gyarados, and Solgaleo much more easily.
  • Spiky Shield is a great protection move that allows Mega Gengar to stall out Perish Song turns more easily, while also letting it give residual damage versus targets who contact it.
  • Disable is another utility option that grants it the ability to negate the use of potential harmful attacks towards it, making it easier to setup Perish Song. It also works well in conjunction with Encore and Spiky Shield, as when used systematically, it can force the opponent to Struggle and receive residual damage. Spiky Shield also works well since it can protect itself against pivot moves such as U-turn and Volt Switch, and then proceed to Disable these moves in order to prevent the foe from escaping.

Therefore, Mega evolve as early as possible unless there it would like to trick certain switchins with Illusion and proceed to trap them.
  • Inflicting significant damage from your teammates against opposing defensive walls can be useful, as it can force these threats to use recovery moves, giving Mega Gengar the ample opportunity to set up an Encore and proceed to KO them with Perish Song.
  • Shadow Tag Mega Gengar is a very useful partner, since it can tailor itself to trap and target any specific threat that your other teammates are weak too, meaning a lot of different move variations can be run.

  • Entry hazard removal support is appreciated, as it allows Gengar to benefit from the effects of Illusion as much as possible due to entry hazard damage not being a revealing factor present.
  • Wallbreakers such as Traige Mega Rayquaza and Tinted Lens Primal Groudon are great partners, due to their ability to force opposing walls to use recovery moves, allowing Mega Gengar to trap them and remove them.
  • Mega Gengar can also be used to trap teammates that have been Impostered that cannot harm it such as Xerneas, Mega Audino, and Mega Aggron if it is able to lock them into a recovery move, acting as a great way to remove Imposter Chansey.
  • Slow pivots such as Giratina, Mega Slowbro and Chansey are useful to bring in Mega Gengar safely, especially if the foe has used a move that does not harm Mega Gengar, as it allows Mega Gengar to potentially get the KO.
  • Eject Button is another great item that can be run on defensive teammates such as Registeel, Mega Audino, and Giratina, acting as a great way to allow Mega Gengar to Disable pivoting moves and proceed to trap and KO threats with Perish Song.

Strategy Comments
Other Options
  • Mega Gengar can choose to run an offensive Shadow Tag set, running coverage moves such as Secret Sword, Blue Flare, and Earth Power, or whatever fits your team best, that allows it to trap and KO more threats.
  • Perish Song can be used on Normalize sets alongside Anchor Shot to allow Mega Gengar to trap and KO opposing threats, while also ensuring it cannot be hit thanks to Entrainment.
  • A set with No Guard + Sing is possible, due to Mega Gengar being able to abuse a boosted STAB Hex attack, alongside other coverage moves such as Focus Blast.

Safety Goggles Unaware Mega Audino can wall almost all setup boosting Mega Gengar sets that lack Sludge Wave, and either proceed to steal or neutralize its boosts with Spectral Thief and Haze respectably. However, it does fear Entrainment sets if it is not running Magic Bounce.

[Magic Bounce]: Common Magic Bounce users such as Mega Tyranitar, Arceus, and Zygarde-C can block the use of Entrainment towards them, making Mega Gengar ineffective against these threats. It also aids these threats from being inflicted by Encore, meaning that Shadow Tag sets have a much more difficult time netting the KO.

However, this is all assuming Chansey wins the speed tie versus Mega Gengar, meaning it is not a reliable option.

[Faster Offensive Psychic-types]: Faster Psychic-types such as Mega Mewtwo Y and Deoxys-A can outspeed and KO unboosted Mega Gengar if it has broken its Focus Sash.

[RegenVest Users]: RegenVest users such as Mega Gyarados, Yveltal, Primal Kyogre, and Zygarde-C are all able to sustain at least one attack from Mega Gengar (sometimes even boosted ones) and can proceed to severely dent it. However, Mega Gengar can run Spore to cripple all these threats.

[Pusuit]: Pursuit can be run on defensive pivots such as Mega Tyranitar, Yveltal, Solgaleo, and Alolan-Muk to potentially KO Mega Gengar if it chooses to switch out.

Really minor stuff but how about creating separate Check and Counters section for Primals? Now Gengar has to run APS to OHKO Pdon, and Pogre doesnt even die from +2 Moongeist Beam. But they all suffer from Normalize set.

Normalize set doesn't have to be always offensive. I run Judgment, Substitute, Entrainment, and others with Leech Seed or Core Enforcer (Normalized so it can hit Fairy). While it might seem inferior due to not being able to sweep, it can function as a great support and completely deter unprepared teams or teams with foes that are slower than Gengar.

Substitute is strongly recommended in current meta with Judgment and Revelation Dance, and Leech Seed or other moves can be used to harass switch-in. It might be better than you think. However, it is completely up to you whether you decide to implement this or not.

There isn't but there's also no real reason to do it at all. Since there isn't any sleep clause, sleep spam is done better elsewhere (such as by mold breaker, knock off, or poison heal mons), and it doesn't let Mega Gengar KO any important targets it otherwise misses.

What bout sleep perish trap
Perish Trap is better pulled of by Encore, since Safety Goggles is commonly run on various defensive pivots within the metagame, meaning that Gengar would require too much support to pull of SleepTrapping shenanigans.

Overview

Mega Gengar is one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the Balanced Hackmons metagame thanks to the combination of its high base 170 Special Attack and 130 Speed. It also has access to a Great great Ghost / Poison offensive typing that allows it to hit most of the metagame for at least neutral damage. It also Also, Mega Gengar grants it has a resistance to Fairy and two immunities to Normal and Fighting-type attacks, giving it more switchin opportunities and allowing it to use Normalize and Imposterproof sets with Spooky Plate Judgement to great effect. felt that the "it" was a bit unclear in referring to gengar's typing (especially since it referred to gengar in the previous sentence) The introduction of priority blocking abilities such as Dazzling and Queenly Majesty also aid setup sweeping Mega Gengar sets from being checked by priority moves. This generation also brought forth a great new STAB option for Mega Gengar in Moongeist Beam, allowing to effectively bypass certain Unaware pokemon such as Xerneas and Mega Steelix and Sturdy Shedinja, threats that it had a difficult time breaking through previously. according to writing standards, you're not supposed to stay stuff like "with the introduction of x" or "this generation, y happened which made z better", just say something like "gengar can use moongeist to beat shed and stuff" Gengar can also abuse access Shadow Tag when Mega Evolving manually, allowing it to be quite a nuisance for more defensive teams. The mega evolution turn mechanic buff also lets Shadow Tag Mega Gengar forego a Protection move, allowing it to be more versatile. Mega Gengar is however weak to common offensive types such as Dark, Ground, and Psychic. imo spectral thief in particular deserves a mention here, because it deals damage and also prevents you from setting up It is also very frail, meaning that it usually cannot endure a hit coming from offensive pokemon Pokemon.

Moves

Entrainment is the main crux to this set, as it allows Mega Gengar to effectively negate all damage towards it from any slower opposing Pokemon slower then it. It also has the benefit of overwriting popular abilities such as Poison Heal and Regenerator, which can be useful for crippling common abusers of these abilities such as Primal Kyogre and Solgaleo. Judgement Judgment acts as the main STAB move of this set, as the move converts into a Ghost-type attack when equipped with a Spooky Plate. It also lets Mega Gengar Improof imposter-proof itself if the Chansey Imposter is not running a Spooky or Earth Plate itself. Shell Smash is a great setup move that turns Mega Gengar into a deadly sweeper. It also works well in conjunction with Entrainment, as it gives it many opportunities to setup set up once the opposing Pokemon has acquired Normalize. Quiver Dance is another great setup move that allows Mega Gengar to sustain itself more durably thanks to the increase in Special Defense ontop on top of it not lowering its defensive stats unlike Shell Smash. However, with Quiver Dance, Mega Gengar gives up the immediate power and speed that Shell Smash provides it. Taunt is a great utility move that allows Mega Gengar to prevent defensive pokemon from recovering or using other status moves such as Haze and Whilwhind. It also works well alongside Entrainment, as Mega Gengar can completely nullify the opposing pokemon from using any type of moves towards it due to the stack of both restrictions. King's Shield allows Mega Gengar to protect itself from physical priority moves such as Fake Out and Extreme Speed, and can proceed to take the hit the proceeding turn thanks to the -2 in Attack it provides if the foe comes in contact with it. probably mention boomburst/psystrike here imo, otherwise you can't touch normal types

Set Details

Normalize is used as it effectively allows Mega Gengar to neutralize any slower foes when used in conjunction with Entrainment. Spooky Plate is equipped to turn Judgement Judgment into a Ghost-type attack, giving Mega Gengar a STAB option that cannot be emulated by Imposter Pokemon if they are not running Spooky Plate as well. EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to turn Mega Gengar into a fast and powerful Special Attacker.

Usage Tips

Normalize Mega Gengar can shut down many common defensive walls such as Registeel, Solgaleo, Giratina, Zygarde-C, and Dialga. Therefore, (AC) its it's best used as a pseudo-wallbreaker that can weaken down the aforementioned pokemon, allowing other setup sweepers to have a much more easier time performing their role since it necessitates specific counterplay, meaning that threats such as Slaking and Regigiggas Regigigas that are normally able to check it are no longer effective. However, Magic Bounce can be run on any of the mentioned Pokemon above to be able to bounce back the effects of Entrainment, disallowing Mega Gengar to break through these threats. Thus, (AC) scouting Magic Bounce on these defensive Pokemon is key in order to use Mega Gengar efficiently. But, Mega Gengar can still pressure some of the aforementioned threats solely with its damage output alone. Even after setting up a Shell Smash, Mega Gengar is still prone to be checked by priority users such as Triage Mega Rayquaza and Refrigerate Kyurem-B. It is best to setup set up only after potential priority users have been dealt with, or if Mega Gengar is under Psychic Terrain. Unaware Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Zygarde-C are able to completely wall this set. However, they can't do much in return after being inflicted with Entrainment unless they possess moves such as Haze or Whirlwind. Certain threats can opt for options to circumvent the effects of Normalize to catch Mega Gengar off guard, with examples being Waterium Z Primal Kyogre and Revelation Dance Mega Mewtwo Y. maybe emphasize how you need to scout for these threats?

Team Options

Pokemon that can take on Dark-types such as Mega Tyranitar, Mega Gyarados, and Yveltal are crucial if Mega Gengar is not running Fist Plate you haven't even mentioned fist plate yet. is it used on entrainment sets or something?. Fairy-types such as Mega Audino and Xerneas are great examples as not only do they threaten out the aforementioned threats, but they the former can Improof imposter-proof Mega Gengar with an Unaware set, while the latter can setup entry hazards which helps it break through walls and KO Sturdy Shedinja. mega gengar beats imposter unless they have a plate; sheddy loses to entrainment removing sturdy. is there anything stopping xern from running unaware or audino from setting sr? how do they even imposter proof in the first place when unaware gets entrained away? Partners that can take on priority moves can also be useful to have, as it eases Mega Gengar's capability to setup. Examples include Soundproof Mega Slowbro, Psychic Surge Mega Mewtwo Y, and defensive Steel-types such as Registeel and Aegislash. Magic Bounce Mega Tyranitar is another great example of a Pokemon that can Improof Mega Gengar. If the Mega Gengar is holding a Fist Plate with Revelation Dance, Mega Tyranitar is able to resist every attacking move coming of the Imposter Mega Gengar and also does not fear of Entrainment, meaning it can deal super effective damage with moves such as Knock Off and Pursuit. bouncer ttar isn't really a set, don't see much of a reason to use this over something like unaware audino. Other setup sweepers such as Poison Heal Primal Kyogre and Triage Mega Rayquaza appreciate Mega Gengar's ability to weaken down defeive defensive walls, while they can threaten offensive pokemon Pokemon in return. Entry hazard removal is also vital in order to sustain Mega Gengar as much as possible due to its weakness to Spikes. Partners such as Defog Giratina, Rapid Spin Solgaleo, and Defog Registeel are all great examples of this.

Moves

Moongeist Beam is a reliable STAB option for Dazzling and Adaptability sets that allows Mega Gengar to bypass abilities that would otherwise interrupt its sweep, (AC) such as Unaware and Sturdy on Shedinja. Judgement Judgment is another STAB option when used in conjunction with Spooky Plate to allow Mega Gengar to Imposter proof imposter-proof itself. Secret Sword is a great coverage move that grants Mega Gengar perfect neutral coverage alongside its Ghost STAB, allowing it to hit targets such as Mega Tyranitar, Yveltal, Registeel, and Dialga for more damage. It also hits on the physical side, meaning that Mega Gengar can have a much more easier time breaking through specially defensive walls. Shell Smash is an incredible setup boosting move that ensures that Mega Gengar outspeeds all the unboosted metagame after one boost, while also allowing it to hit incredibly hard as well. Spore is a great utility move best used alongside Mold Breaker sets since Mega Gengar is not running Safety Goggles itseld itself. It allows Mega Gengar to put foes such as RegenVest Primal Kyogre and Mega Gyaradis Gyarados to sleep, enabling it to have an easier time setting up. Sludge Wave is an alternative STAB option that is especially useful on Adaptability sets, as it allows Mega Gengar to ensure the 2HKO on Unaware Mega Audino and OHKO on Poison Heal Yveltal at +2. Sludge Wave is also 4x 2x resisted by Mega Gengar, meaning that it is a viable option on Imposter proof sets.

Set Details

Dazzling is a great ability alongside Shell Smash, as it grants Mega Gengar an immunity to all forms of priority, meaning that it can have a much more easier time sweeping versus more offensive teams. Mega Gengar is also immune to Fake Out and Extreme Speed, meaning it can defeat common Dazzling answers in Mold Breaker Regigiggas Regigigas and Slaking. Mold Breaker is an alternative ability that can be more useful versus defensive teams, as it allows Mega Gengar to break through Unaware walls such as Yveltal, Arceus, Mega Gyarados, and Zygarde-C much more easily after one setup boost while also being able to target Sturdy Shedinja. Adaptability is another option that grants Mega Gengar more power initially, allowing it to 2HKO defensive threats such as Registeel and Zygarde-C after Stealth Rocks Stealth Rock with Spooky Plate Judgement Judgment. Spooky Plate is equipped alongside Judgement to grant Mega Gengar a Ghost-type STAB attack that cannot be copied by Imposter unless it chooses to run a Spooky Plate of its own. A Focus Sash can be equipped instead to effectively grant Mega Gengar one turn to setup set up against any single-attacking move against it, which can be crucial since it has very low bulk that usually does not let it withstand neutral hits on its own. EVs are maxed out in every stat except Attack with a Timid Nature to let Mega Gengar sweep much more easily.

Usage Tips

Mega Gengar is very susceptible to priority unless it chooses to run Dazzling, meaning that it should not begin to setup until all priority attackers on the opposing teams have been KOed or if Psychic Terrain is up. Mega Gengar is an effective sweeper lategame once its approprioates checks have been worn down/KOed, as it can easily be stopped if thats that's not the case. However, Adaptability sets can be used as an early game wallbreaker if needed need be. It can usually net the necessary KOes KOs after only one boost, although breaking through more defensive teams can be a bit more of a task which may require extra setup boosts to break through. Depending on what ability Mega Gengar chooses to run, it can be checked by different threats. For example, Mold Breaker sets cannot deal with priority users, while Dazzling sets struggle to break through Normal-type Unaware walls such as Mega Audino and Arceus. Therefore, (AC) bluffing what exact set Mega Gengar is can be extremely advantageous, especially bluffing Dazzling. Even with Dazzling, Mega Gengar is subjected to Prankster Haze, so be weary wary of common users such as Registeel, Zygarde-C, and Mega Aggron, as they can all prevent Mega Gengar from breaking through them. However, Taunt can be run to prevent the aforementioned checks from using Haze, although this should only be run on Imposter proof imposter-proof sets.[/B][/COLOR]
Team Options

Partners that can deal with priority moves such as defensive Steel-types like Solgaleo and Registeel can be useful partners, due to non-Dazzling Mega Gengar sets being incredibly weak to it. Offensive Fairy-type pokemon such as Mega Diancie and Xerneas are great partners as well, since they can break through common answers to Mega Gengar with examples being Yveltal and Mega Audino. Additionally, Mega Gengar is able to target common answers to Fairy-types such as Solgaleo and Primal Groudon for high damage in return. Entry hazard removal support is important for Mega Gengar as well, since it can help preserve its Focus Sash. Common examples include Giratina, Mega Audino, and Mega Tyranitar. Entry hazards are also useful, as it aids they aid Mega Gengar in securing useful 2HKOes versus targets such as Yveltal, Zygarde-C, and Assault Vest Primal Kyogre after a setup boost, It and they can also be useful in removing Sturdy Shedinja as it comes onto the field. Powerful wallbreakers such as Choice Band Primal Groudon, Choice Specs Mega Rayquaza, and Tough Claws Mega Mewtwo X all appreciate Mega Gengar's capability on taking down offensive threats after a setup boost, while they can all break through defensive walls in return. Knock Off support can also be quite viable, as partners carrying the move can get rid of items such as Safety Goggles which can potentially block the use of Spore.

Moves

Perish Song is the main focus of this set, as in conjunction with Shadow Tag, Mega Gengar can effectively take down any foe as long as it is able to stall out 2 turns. Encore is a great utility move to use alongside Perish Song, as it can let Mega Gengar lock foes into a move that does not effect Mega Gengar immensely, and proceed to setup Perish Song. also say that most walls carry u-turn so they can't do that if you encore them. Ice Beam is a great coverage move that allows Mega Gengar to potentially trap and KO common offensive and defensive threats such as Mega Rayquaza and Zygarde-C respectably. Moongeist Beam is an alternative option that grants Mega Gengar a STAB attack, letting it be able to do a bit more damage versus pokemon such as Registeel, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre. It also allows Mega Gengar to hit Ghost-types, which do not get trapped by Shadow Tag. Strength Sap is a great recovery move that allows Mega Gengar to trap physical attackers such as Yveltal, Mega Gyarados, and Solgaleo much more easily. Spiky Shield is a great protection move that allows Mega Gengar to stall out Perish Song turns more easily, while also letting it give residual damage versus targets who contact it. Disable is another utility option that grants it the ability to negate the use of potential harmful attacks towards it, making it easier to setup Perish Song. It also works well in conjunction with Encore and Spiky Shield, as when used systematically, it can force the opponent to Struggle and receive residual damage. Spiky Shield also works well since it can protect itself against pivot moves such as U-turn and Volt Switch, and then proceed to Disable these moves in order to prevent the foe from escaping. maybe mention steam eruption and king's shield as well. steam is funny for ohkoing pdon which threatens every team, king's shield is kinda like strength sap.

Set Details

Gengarite is required to be used on this set, as it allows Gengar to manually Mega Evolve and acquire Shadow Tag. Illusion works wonderfully with manual Mega Evolution, as it allows regular Gengar to mask its presence. This means that it can trick the opposing Pokemon into thinking it is not there, and can proceed to trap the targeted threat after Mega Evolving the next turn. EVs are maxed out in every stat besides Attack with a Timid Nature to ensure Mega Gengar sustains as much health as possible while being attacked, while also being able to outspeed the majority of the metagame.

Usage Tips

At the beginning of the match, your opponent can already decipher that it is a Shadow Tag Mega Gengar variant due to their being no other reason to run regular Gengar. This can prevent Mega Gengar upon trapping as many threats as it wants to due to your opponent possibly playing more wearily around it. However, Illusion can still help mask when Gengar is on the battlefield. Therefore, Mega evolve Evolve as early as possible unless there it would like to trick certain switchins with Illusion and proceed to trap them. Mega Gengar strives on trapping defensive targets such as Solgaleo, Mega Audino, Zygarde-C, Dialga, and Xerneas due to these threats usually carrying utility moves that do not effect Mega Gengar such as Defog, Rapid Spin, and any recovery move. This means that Mega Gengar can Encore these aforementioned Pokemon into these moves, and proceed to knock them out with Perish Song. While Mega Gengar can Encore the opponent to weak neutral attacks against it such as Scald, Ice Beam, and Knock Off, its pitiful bulk still requires the player to be extra cautious on letting it fall too low on health. This is stressed even more if Mega Gengar chooses to run Disable, as it foregoes recovery and becomes susceptible upon being weared down. The opponent can predict if the user if Gengar through Illusion by notifying aspects such as entry hazards residual damage and status conditions. Therefore it can be detrimental to place the last teammember as a Poison Heal user or one who does not share the same entry hazard weaknesses as Gengar. Shadow Tag Mega Gengar is useful on more defensive teams, acting as a means to trap and KO annoying threats to these type of teams such as Mega Rayquaza, Registeel, Mega Audino, defensive Primal Kyogre, Solgaleo, and Arceus. Inflicting significant damage from your teammates against opposing defensive walls can be useful, as it can force these threats to use recovery moves, giving Mega Gengar the ample opportunity to set up an Encore and proceed to KO them with Perish Song. Shadow Tag Mega Gengar is a very useful partner, since it can tailor itself to trap and target any specific threat that your other teammates are weak too, meaning a lot of different move variations can be run.

Team Options
Mega Gengar appreciates partners that can deal with faster threats that it cannot trap such as Mega Mewtwo Y, Mega Sceptile, Deoxys-A, Choice Scarf Primal Groudon, and Pheromosa. Example of useful defensive walls include Mega Audino, Registeel, Giratina, and Zygarde-C. Entry hazard removal support is appreciated, as it allows Gengar to benefit from the effects of Illusion as much as possible due to entry hazard damage not being a revealing factor present. Wallbreakers such as Traige Mega Rayquaza and Tinted Lens Primal Groudon are great partners, due to their ability to force opposing walls to use recovery moves, allowing Mega Gengar to trap them and remove them. Mega Gengar can also be used to trap teammates that have been Impostered that cannot harm it such as Xerneas, Mega Audino, and Mega Aggron if it is able to lock them into a recovery move, acting as a great way to remove Imposter Chansey. Slow pivots such as Giratina, Mega Slowbro and Chansey are useful to bring in Mega Gengar safely, especially if the foe has used a move that does not harm Mega Gengar, as it allows Mega Gengar to potentially get the KO. Eject Button is another great item that can be run on defensive teammates such as Registeel, Mega Audino, and Giratina, acting as a great way to allow Mega Gengar to Disable pivoting moves and proceed to trap and KO threats with Perish Song.

Strategy Comments

Other Options

Mega Gengar can choose to run an offensive Shadow Tag set, running coverage moves such as Secret Sword, Blue Flare, and Earth Power, or whatever fits your team best, that allows it to trap and KO more threats. Perish Song can be used on Normalize sets alongside Anchor Shot to allow Mega Gengar to trap and KO opposing threats, while also ensuring it cannot be hit thanks to Entrainment. A set with No Guard + Sing is possible, due to Mega Gengar being able to abuse a boosted STAB Hex attack, alongside other coverage moves such as Focus Blast. A Baton Pass Shadow Tag Mega Gengar set with Shell Smash can also be quite potent, due to Mega Gengar being able to setup against defensive threats and then proceed to pass boosts towards other offensive threats. Lovely Kiss can be used over sets with Spore due to its capability to bypass Safety Goggles and Grass-types, however it is less accurate. Quiver Dance can be used over Shell Smash on setup boosting sets to allow Mega Gengar to setup more relaibly due to the added bulk, however it not usually preffered due to it being less immediate then Shell Smash. Mold Breaker sets can run Pursuit to trap and KO Sturdy Shedinja, however wasting a moveslot for such a specific scenario can be difficult due to Mega Gengar already being pressed for moveslots. skill swap on normalize has its benefits like actually removing that awful ability so it can run fighting moves or poison stab if you hate audino. a suicide lead with something like taunt/coat/sr/filler is also viable, because gengar's typing gives it a useful rapid spin immunity and it can taunt defog users, also it bluffs offensive mold breaker gengar.

Checks and Counters

[Mega Audino]: Safety Goggles Unaware Mega Audino can wall almost all setup boosting Mega Gengar sets that lack Sludge Wave, and either proceed to steal or neutralize its boosts with Spectral Thief and Haze respectably.

[Knock Off]: Knock Off also proves to be a hindrance to Mega Gengar, as not only is it hit super effectively by the move, but it also can lose its Spooky Plate, meaning that sets that rely on this item can no longer fire off STAB Ghost-type attacks.

setup is a noun, set up is a verb/adjective.
Examples said:
Even without any setup, Xurkitree can still break many walls.

If Mega Slowbro has set up to +4 with Amnesia, it can avoid the OHKO from Xurkitree's Boomburst and OHKO in return with Mirror Coat.

A fully set up Golisopod can OHKO most variants of Primal Groudon with Aqua Jet.
anyway i like your writing, the only real problem i see is that it has a bit too much fluff. i would also recommend going over the spelling and grammar standards.

Silver_Lucario42 you can't do gp amchecks until it's actually in the gp stage (copyediting) - you can leave comments about the actual info in the analysis but leave the grammar to us :)

and about your comment about setup - "set up" is a verb, "setup" is an adjective (e.g setup bait, setup sweeper, volcarona sets up with quiver dance)

don't hesitate to do gp amchecks on copyediting analyses, though! just remember qc=/=gp :]

Edit: that said, you do seem to have a pretty decent grasp of grammar and the standards !

King's Shield allows Mega Gengar to protect itself from physical priority moves such as Fake Out and Extreme Speed (when equipped with abilities such as Aerilate and Refrigerate), and can proceed to take the hit the proceeding turn thanks to the -2 in Attack it provides if the foe comes in contact with it.

How does Gengar weaken those walls? Slaking and Regigigas normally check what? The walls? Gengar? Please reword this]. However, Magic Bounce can be run on any of the mentioned Pokemon above to be able to bounce back the effects of Entrainment, disallowing Mega Gengar to break through these threats. Examples include Soundproof Mega Slowbro, Psychic Surge Mega Mewtwo Y, and defensive Steel-types such as Registeel and Aegislash. Entry hazard removal is also vital in order to sustain Mega Gengar as much as possible due to its weakness [susceptibility] to Spikes. Partners such as Defog Giratina, Rapid Spin Solgaleo, and Defog Registeel are all great examples of this.

Moves

Moongeist Beam is a reliable STAB option for Dazzling and Adaptability sets that allows Mega Gengar to bypass abilities that would otherwise interrupt its sweep such as Unaware and Sturdy on Shedinja. Judgement [Judgment] is another STAB option when used in conjunction with Spooky Plate to allow Mega Gengar to Imposter proof itself. Spore is a great utility move best used alongside Mold Breaker sets since Mega Gengar is not running Safety Goggles itseld. It allows Mega Gengar to put foes such as RegenVest Primal Kyogre and Mega Gyaradis to sleep, enabling it to have an easier time setting up. Sludge Wave is an alternative STAB option that is especially useful on Adaptability sets, as it allows Mega Gengar to ensure the 2HKO on Unaware Mega Audino and OHKO Poison Heal Yveltal at +2 [+2 252 SpA Adaptability Gengar-Mega Sludge Wave vs. 248 HP / 252 SpD Yveltal: 406-478 (89.2 - 105%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO - Also you don't need to mention Poison Heal]. Sludge Wave is also 4x resisted by Mega Gengar, meaning that it is a viable option on Imposter proof sets [This IS an Improof set, it's viable on THIS set]

Set Details

Dazzling is a great ability alongside Shell Smash, as it grants Mega Gengar an immunity to all forms of priority, meaning that it can have a much more easier time sweeping versus more offensive teams. Mega Gengar is also immune to Fake Out and Extreme Speed, meaning it can defeat common Dazzling answers in Mold Breaker Regigiggas and Slaking. Mold Breaker is an alternative ability that can be more useful versus defensive teams, as it allows Mega Gengar to break through Unaware walls such as Yveltal, Arceus, Mega Gyarados, and Zygarde-C much more easily after one setup boost while also being able to target Sturdy Shedinja [Mention how most of the Unaware Pokemon can easily tank Moongeist Beam, necessitating Mold Breaker]. Adaptability is another option that grants Mega Gengar more power initially, allowing it to 2HKO defensive threats such as Registeel and Zygarde-C after Stealth Rocks with Spooky Plate Judgement [252 SpA Spooky Plate Adaptability Gengar-Mega Judgment vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Zygarde-Complete: 262-310 (41.1 - 48.7%) -- 11.7% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock]. Spooky Plate is equipped alongside Judgement to grant Mega Gengar a Ghost-type STAB attack that cannot be copied by Imposter unless it chooses to run a Spooky Plate of its own. A Focus Sash can be equipped instead to effectively grant Mega Gengar one turn to setup against any single-attacking move against it, which can be crucial since it has very low bulk that usually does not let it withstand neutral hits on its own.

Mega Gengar is an effective sweeper lategame once its approprioates checks have been worn down/KOed, as it can easily be stopped if thats not the case [Stopped by what?]. However, Adaptability sets can be used as an early game wallbreaker if needed be. It can usually net the necessary KOes after only one boost, although breaking through more defensive teams can be a bit more of a task which may require extra setup boosts to break through. Depending what ability Mega Gengar chooses to run, it can be checked by different threats. For example, Mold Breaker sets cannot deal with priority users, while Dazzling sets struggle to break through Normal-type Unaware walls such as Mega Audino and Arceus. Therefore bluffing what exact set Mega Gengar is can be extremely advantageous, especially bluffing Dazzling. Even with Dazzling, Mega Gengar is subjected to [neutralized by] Prankster Haze, so be weary [wary] of common users such as Registeel, Zygarde-C, and Mega Aggron, as they can all prevent Mega Gengar from breaking through them. However, Taunt can be run to prevent the aforementioned checks from using Haze, although this should only be run on Imposter proof sets.

Additionally, Mega Gengar is able to target common answers to Fairy-types such as Solgaleo and Primal Groudon for high damage in return [Gengar is by no means a reliable Primal Groudon answer, I'd use a different example]. Entry hazard removal support is important for Mega Gengar as well, since it can help preserve its Focus Sash. Common examples include Giratina, Mega Audino, and Mega Tyranitar. Entry hazards are also useful, as it aids Mega Gengar in securing useful 2HKOes versus targets such as Yveltal, Zygarde-C, and Assault Vest Primal Kyogre after a setup boost, It can also be useful in removing Sturdy Shedinja as it comes onto the field.

Other Options

Perish Song can be used on Normalize sets alongside Anchor Shot to allow Mega Gengar to trap and KO opposing threats, while also ensuring it cannot be hit thanks to Entrainment. A set with No Guard + Sing is possible, due to Mega Gengar being able to abuse a boosted STAB Hex attack, alongside other coverage moves such as Focus Blast. Lovely Kiss can be used over sets with Spore due to its capability to bypass Safety Goggles and Grass-types, however it is less accurate. Quiver Dance can be used over Shell Smash on setup boosting sets to allow Mega Gengar to setup more relaibly due to the added bulk, however it not usually preffered due to it being less immediate then Shell Smash [This is already mentioned in the Normalize set, you don't need to bring it up here again]. Mega Gengar can also abuse Toxic Spikes support when equipped with Merciless, being able to break through defensive threats with boosted Hex and Venoshock [Explain here that it's unreliable and difficult to pull off in practise]. Mold Breaker sets can run Pursuit to trap and KO Sturdy Shedinja, however wasting a moveslot for such a specific scenario can be difficult due to Mega Gengar already being pressed for moveslots.

Checks and Counters

[Mega Audino]:
Safety Goggles Unaware Mega Audino can wall almost all setup boosting Mega Gengar sets that lack Sludge Wave, and either proceed to steal or neutralize its boosts with Spectral Thief and Haze respectably. However, it does fear Entrainment sets if it is not running Magic Bounce.

[Magic Bounce]: Common Magic Bounce users such as Registeel, Arceus, and Zygarde-C can block the use of Entrainment towards them, making Mega Gengar ineffective against these threats.

[Mention Mega Gyarados over Muk, it's a lot more prevelant. Also remove the Spore bit and just say "..choose to run Moonblast to hit both hard"]

However, this is all assuming Chansey wins the speed tie versus Mega Gengar, meaning it is not a reliable option. [It's not a lure, Chansey switches in on Mega Gengar to copy it, Mega Gengar can't be lured and switch in on Chansey. Use the phrase "catch by surprise" or something]

[Pusuit]: Pursuit can be run on defensive pivots such as Mega Tyranitar, Yveltal, Solgaleo, and Alolan-Muk [Mega Gyarados] to potentially KO Mega Gengar if it chooses to switch out. [Pursuit Solgaleo?]

[Knock Off]: Knock Off also proves to be a hindrance to Mega Gengar, as not only is it hit super effectively by the move, but it also can lose its Spooky Plate, meaning that sets that rely on this item can no longer fire off STAB Ghost-type attacks.

Overview

Mega Gengar is one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the Balanced Hackmons metagame thanks to the its combination of its high base 170 Special Attack and base 130 Speed. It also has access to a great Ghost / Poison offensive typing, (comma) which allows it to hit most of the metagame for at least neutral damage. Its typing also grants it a resistance to Fairy and two immunities to Normal and Fighting-type attacks immunity to Normal- and Fighting-type attacks, allowing it to use the combination of Normalize and Entrainment to become untouchable, especially against Imposter users. Abilities such as Dazzling and Queenly Majesty aid keep setup sweeping Mega Gengar sets from being checked by priority moves, (comma) and a great STAB option in Moongeist Beam allows it to also bypass certain Unaware Pokemon such as Zygarde-C, (comma) and Primal Kyogre and also allows it to target Sturdy Shedinja. Mega Gengar is, (comma) however, (comma) weak to common offensive types such as Dark, Ground, and Psychic. It is also very frail, meaning that it usually cannot endure a hit coming from offensive Pokemon and can easily be revenge killed by priority moves if its not equipped with the proper ability or under the effects of Psychic Terrain. It also struggles against counterplay from threats that carry Z-Crystals, Revelation Dance, or Magic Bounce, which are all seeing common use on defensive pivots thanks to Mega Gengar's popularity.

Moves

Entrainment is the main crux to focus of this set, as it allows Mega Gengar to effectively be immune to nearly every attacking move towards it from any opposing Pokemon slower then Mega Gengar. It also has the benefit of overwriting popular abilities such as Poison Heal and Regenerator, which can be useful for crippling common abusers of these abilities such as Primal Kyogre and Solgaleo. Judgment acts as the main STAB move of this set, as the move it converts into a Ghost-type attack when Mega Gengar is equipped with a Spooky Plate. It also lets Mega Gengar Imposter-proof itself if the Chansey is not running a Spooky Plate or Earth Plate itself. Shell Smash is a great setup move that turns Mega Gengar into a deadly sweeper. It also works well in conjunction with Entrainment, as it gives it which creates many opportunities to set(space)up once the opposing Pokemon has acquired Normalize. Quiver Dance is another great setup move that allows Mega Gengar to better sustain itself more durably thanks to the increase in Special Defense on(space)top of it not lowering its defensive stats unlike Shell Smash does. However, Mega Gengar gives up the immediate power and Speed that Shell Smash provides it. Taunt is a great utility move that allows Mega Gengar to prevent defensive Pokemon from recovering or using other status moves such as Haze and Whirlwind. It also works well alongside Entrainment, as Mega Gengar can then completely nullify stop the opposing Pokemon from using any type of moves towards it due to the stack of both restrictions. Normal-type Moongeist Beam is a great coverage option which that not only allows Mega Gengar to target Normal-types that would like to switch into Judgment, but can also allow it to break through common Unaware walls such as Primal Kyogre and Mega Gyarados. Core Enforcer can be used as an alternative as a means to lure in Magic Bounce threats such as Mega Audino and Registeel, however but it is more reliant on predictions in order to work effectively. King's Shield allows Mega Gengar to protect itself from physical priority moves such as Fake Out and Extreme Speed (when equipped with affected by abilities such as Aerilate and Refrigerate), (comma) and can proceed to take the hit the proceeding following turn thanks to the -2 in Attack it provides if the foe comes in contact with it Attack drop it causes.

Set Details

Normalize is used as because it effectively allows Mega Gengar to neutralize any slower foes when used in conjunction with Entrainment.

Therefore, (comma) it's its best used as a wallbreaker that can weaken down the aforementioned Pokemon, allowing other setup sweepers to have a much more easier time performing their role late-(hyphen)game. However, Magic Bounce can be run on any of the mentioned Pokemon above to be able to bounce back the effects of Entrainment, disallowing Mega Gengar to break through these threats if it does not carry Core Enforcer. Thus Scouting for Magic Bounce on these defensive Pokemon is thus key in order to use Mega Gengar efficiently. But, Note that Mega Gengar can still pressure some of the aforementioned threats solely with its damage output alone. Even after setting up a Shell Smash, Mega Gengar is still prone to be checked by priority users such as Triage Mega Rayquaza and Refrigerate Kyurem-B. It is best to set(space)up only after potential priority users have been dealt with, (comma) or if Mega Gengar is under Psychic Terrain. Unaware Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Zygarde-C are able to completely wall this set if Mega Gengar it lacks Moongeist Beam. Therefore, it is recommended that its teammates break through the aforementioned checks before Mega Gengar it attempts a sweep.

Fairy-types such as Mega Audino and Xerneas are great examples, (comma) as not only do they threaten out the aforementioned threats said Dark-types, but the former can check Impostered Imposter-copied Mega Gengar through an Unaware set with Haze or Topsy-Turvy, while the latter can set(comma)up entry hazards with a Poison Heal set and prevent hazard removal from Dark-types with its STAB attacks, which helps Mega Gengar break through walls and KO Sturdy Shedinja. Partners that can take on priority moves can also be useful to have, as it eases Mega Gengar's capability to set(space)up. Examples include Fur Coat Chansey, Psychic Surge Mega Mewtwo Y, and defensive Steel-types such as Registeel and Aegislash. Other setup sweepers such as Poison Heal Primal Kyogre and Triage Mega Rayquaza appreciate Mega Gengar's ability to weaken down defensive walls, while they can threaten offensive Pokemon in return. Entry hazard removal or prevention is also vital in order to sustain Mega Gengar as much as possible due to its susceptibility to Spikes. Partners such as Defog Giratina, Rapid Spin Solgaleo, and Magic Bounce Registeel are all great examples of this.

Sludge Wave is also 4x resisted by Mega Gengar, meaning that it is a viable option that can still check Imposter as well. Spore is a great utility move best used alongside Dazzling sets, (comma) since it allows Mega Gengar to put foes such as Regenerator + Assault Vest Primal Kyogre and Yveltal to sleep, enabling it to have an easier time setting up.

Mold Breaker is utilized to let Mega Gengar threaten more defensive teams, since it enables Mega Gengar to break through Unaware walls such as Yveltal, Arceus, Mega Gyarados, and Zygarde-C much more easily after one setup boost while also being able to target Sturdy Shedinja. Banned deucer.
As much as MMY is the most common threat (as we can tell from usage stats), it might be too late but I believe Overview should mention Gengar's few selling points over MMY (or other special attackers), such as its ability to easily imposterproof itself while removing Toxic Spikes.
