Battle Stadium Singles Series 2

This thread is the place for both resources on the format, and updates for newly uploaded content on Smogon! So go ahead and watch this thread if you're into that kind of stuff!

Note, legendary ruins and Pokemon not in the Paldea Dex are still banned. So sorry folks, you can use Iron Bundle, but no Chi-Yu, Quagsires, or Charmanders allowed!

While this metagame has not started yet, you CAN challenge people to the format on Pokemon Showdown, so feel free to playtest stuff with people like me!

:sv/iron bundle: SPEED TIERS :sv/flutter mane:
Time to get to know those time traveling speedsters! They sure got some weird speed tiers...

That's where the Speed Tiers will help! I have a chart here that lists the speeds of a TON of mons! You can use ctrl+f (or whatever search function your device uses) to quickly check up what speeds a foe is likely to have. Alternately, you can use these handy charts to craft your own custom EV spreads! I put Pokemon that are likely to be important speed tiers in Bold Red for Speed, and Bold for the important Pokemon in question.

Also: Don't read this like a viability list. For example, I sorta doubt stuff like Cyclizar or Farigiraf will be important to Battle Stadium Singles, but stuff like that is included in case you run into some weird teams on the ladder!

:sv/scream tail: Battle Stadium Series 2 Role Compendium :sv/iron valiant:

Here, we'll be doing some light analyses on common and uncommon roles in the metagame, and listing some Pokemon for you to use in said role!

Since things are early for the Series 2 metagame, we won't really divide roles on viability yet beyond what made sense in Series 1. Once things become more clear, we'll divide things into viability too!

ALSO: THIS IS NOT FINISHED YET! THIS IS JUST WHAT WE GOT SO FAR!

Hazards

Stealth Rock

Even in the fast paced world of 3v3, Stealth Rock can make plenty of sense on a team. While setting them up every game isn't a must, they're a huge help against Focus Sash foes and Dragonite alike.

Defensive Stealth Rock Setters

These Pokemon are bulky options that are pretty reliable at getting Stealth Rock up, and even support in other ways.

Likely to be major

:hippowdon:Hippowdon :garchomp:Garchomp :annihilape:Annihilape :great tusk:Great Tusk :clodsire:Clodsire :tinkaton:Tinkaton :garganacl:Garganacl

Likely to be viable

:iron treads:Iron Treads :scream tail: Scream Tail :torkoal:Torkoal

Likely to be niche

:chansey:Chansey :tyranitar:Tyranitar :dudunsparce:Dudunsparce:orthworm:Orthworm :mudsdale:Mudsdale :gastrodon:Gastrodon :krookodile:Krookodile

Offensive Stealth Rock Setters

These Pokemon often try to get Stealth Rock up by ANY means necessary, with many of them even using Focus Sash to guarantee it!

Likely to be major

:great tusk:Great Tusk :garchomp:Garchomp :glimmora:Glimmora

Likely to be viable

:hydreigon:Hydreigon :kingambit:Kingambit

Likely to be niche

:sandy shocks:Sandy Shocks:iron thorns:Iron Thorns :lycanroc-dusk:Lycanroc-D

Toxic Spikes

Toxic Spikes aren't really too common, and the good absorbers can make it tricky to use. However, it can be devestating against the right match-up, and the Pokemon that use them can do more than just that anyways! You got two categories: Defensive ones, and Offensive ones who just have the option of using Toxic Spikes (but don't always run it). And of course..

Toxic Debris Setter (duh)

:glimmora:Glimmora

Defensive Toxic Spikes Setters

Likely to be major

:clodsire:Clodsire

Likely to be niche

:toxapex:Toxapex

Offensive Toxic Spikes Setters

Likely to be viable

:iron moth:Iron Moth:meowscarada:Meowscarada

Likely to be niche

:gengar:Gengar :pincurchin:Pincurchin

Spikes

Traditionally, Spikes have been a very rare hazard in Battle Stadium Singles, since they take time to be as effective compared to Stealth Rock, which can be a liability in a 3v3 environment. However, with the rise of Spikes Garchomp, clearly they have worth this generation! Generally, being able to use Stealth Rock as well is prefered, because Stealth Rock + Spikes do a lot of damage together!

The Big One

:garchomp:Garchomp

Other potential, less common users

:clodsire:Clodsire :glimmora:Glimmora

Likely to be niche

:orthworm:Orthworm :sandy shocks: Sandy Shocks :iron thorns:Iron Thorns

Rapid Spin

Back in previous generations, Rapid Spin used to be considered a waste of time, due to the fast paced nature of 3v3. However, with the rise of Spikes Garchomp, and the sheer power of Multiscale Dragonite, Rapid Spin is not as useless as it used to be! Don't expect it to be common, but it's something to keep in mind.

Likely to be major

:great tusk:Great Tusk

Likely to be viable

:iron treads:Iron Treads :torkoal:Torkoal :glimmora:Glimmora (Mortal Spin)

Sticky Web
On paper, Sticky Web sounds like it could be quite powerful this generation.., but the distribution is NOT good right now. This is listed more out of obligation than something to prepare for. So if you really want to use Sticky Webs, these are your only options...

The one that might be usable?

:masquerain:Masquerain

Your other sad choices

:spidops:Spidops :kricketune:Kricketune

Status, Disruption, and Debuffs

Sleep

Since Battle Stadium Singles does not have Sleep Clause, this is an extremely powerful status!

Spore

It doesn't get much better than Spore, with its wonderful 100% accuracy!

:breloom:Breloom :amoonguss:Amoonguss :brute bonnet:Brute Bonnet

Yawn

Yawn's extra turn doesn't make it great at instant gratification, but its great at forcing switches and its wide learnpool makes it a major move!

Likely to be major

:hippowdon:Hippowdon :dondozo:Dondozo :skeledirge:Skeledirge :umbreon:Umbreon :sylveon:Sylveon

Likely to be viable

:torkoal:Torkoal :clodsire:Clodsire

Likely to be niche

:slowking:Slowking :slowbro:Slowbro :dudunsparce:Dudunsparce :houndstone:Houndstone

Hypnosis

The 60% accuracy makes Hypnosis a very risky move, but the speedy Pokemon that can viably use it can be devestating if the lady luck is on their side!

:espathra:Espathra :iron valiant:Iron Valiant :gengar:Gengar

Paralysis

Paralysis is a powerful speed control option that can last the whole match, and it has a fairly wide variety of viable users too!

Thunder Wave

Likely to be major

:dragonite:Dragonite :gholdengo:Gholdengo :tinkaton:Tinkaton

Likely to be viable

:scream tail:Scream Tail :flutter mane:Flutter Mane :hydreigon:Hydreigon :gengar:Gengar :dragapult:Dragapult :kingambit:Kingambit :mimikyu:Mimikyu :umbreon:Umbreon :grimmsnarl:Grimmsnarl :blissey:Blissey :chansey:Chansey

Likely to be niche

:bellibolt:Bellibolt :gyarados:Gyarados :pincurchin:Pincurchin :sandy shocks:Sandy Shocks :tyranitar:Tyranitar

Glare

Not only is Glare more accurate than Thunder Wave, but it hits Ground-types too! But it has a very poor distribution...

The one good Glare user

:dudunsparce:Dudunsparce

Nuzzle

Since this is an attack, it can break Focus Sash and ignore Taunt! Nuzzle also has a very small distribution, though.

The major user

:pawmot:Pawmot

Other likely very niche users

:toxtricity:Toxtricity :hatterene:Hatterene

Fling + Light Ball

Pikachu? Nah that thing sucks, the real use of Light Ball is to Fling it on foes, paralyzing Ground-types and Gholdengo! Note that Covert Cloak does block this effect though.

Likely to use it

:annihilape:Annihilape :blissey:Blissey

Likely to be niche

:garchomp:Garchomp :garganacl:Garganacl :krookodile:Krookodile

Burn

Burns are somewhat risky to attempt inflicting since there isn't a 100% reliable way to do so, but halving Attack is so strong that it's worth considering!

Will-O-Wisp

The one status move to inflict burn, though the 85% accuracy can be annoying...

Likely to be major

:skeledirge:Skeledirge :volcarona:Volcarona :dragapult:Dragapult :rotom-wash:Rotom-W

Likely to be viable

:mimikyu:Mimikyu :tauros-paldea-blaze:Paldean Tauros-Fire :slither wing:Slither Wing :rotom-heat:Rotom-H

Likely to be niche

:gengar:Gengar :ceruledge:Ceruledge:torkoal:Torkoal :houndstone:Houndstone :arcanine:Arcanine

Fling + Flame Orb

This is a pretty rare combo, but it does give a few Pokemon a highly unexpected way to burn stuff!

:garganacl:Garganacl :blissey:Blissey

Toxic Poisoning

This is a status that wears down foes like no other, but it's extremely limited distribution still makes it rather uncommon.

Toxic

Likely to use it

:clodsire:Clodsire :toxapex:Toxapex

Unlikely to use it often

:gengar:Gengar :glimmora:Glimmora

Fling + Toxic Orb / Poison Barb

Now this is a real rarity, but Fling + Toxic Orb DOES get some surprising status (or Poison Barb if you want regular poison in exchange for not getting status'd lol)

:garganacl:Garganacl :blissey:Blissey

Ghost-type Curse

Cutting half your health might make Curse seem like an iffy move on Ghost-types, but it deals so much chip damage it can be worth it, especially if you're trying to sack your Pokemon anyways!

Likely to be major

:mimikyu:Mimikyu :dragapult:Dragapult :annihilape:Annihilape

Likely to be niche

:skeledirge:Skeledirge :garganacl:Tera Ghost Garganacl :gengar:Gengar

Leech Seed

Leech Seed has been an annoying status in the past, but the biggest users of it got smacked by dexit this gen.

Most likely to sometimes use it.

:meowscarada:Meowscarada

Uncommon Pokemon that might use it

:scovillain:Scovillain :arboliva:Arboliva

Taunt

The ability to shut down defense and support Pokemon makes Taunt very valuable!

Likely to be major

:annihilape:Annihilape :corviknight:Corviknight :meowscarada:Meowscarada

Likely to be viable

:flutter mane:Flutter Mane :roaring moon:Roaring Moon :great tusk:Great Tusk :iron bundle:Iron Bundle :iron valiant:Iron Valiant :kingambit:Kingambit :mimikyu:Mimikyu :umbreon:Umbreon :ceruledge:Ceruledge :gengar:Gengar :quaquaval:Quaquaval :hydreigon:Hydreigon

Likely to be niche

:tyranitar:Tyranitar :iron thorns:Iron Thorns :gyarados:Gyarados :krookodile:Krookodile

Encore

Encore has proven itself to be a fairly debilitating move, so be prepared for it!

Likely to be major

:dragonite:Dragonite :iron bundle:Iron Bundle :scream tail:Scream Tail :tinkaton:Tinkaton

Likely to be viable

:skeledirge:Skeledirge :iron valiant:Iron Valiant :annihilape: Annihilape :gengar:Gengar :quaquaval:Quaquaval :pawmot:Pawmot

Likely to be niche

:sableye:Sableye :grafaiai:Grafaiai

Trick / Switcheroo

Choice Trick / Switcheroo

This is the bane of defensive Pokemon everywhere!

Likely to be major

:gholdengo:Gholdengo :iron valiant:Iron Valiant :rotom-wash:Rotom-W :rotom-heat:Rotom-H :mimikyu:Mimikyu :meowscarada:Meowscarada

Likely to be niche

:grimmsnarl:Grimmsnarl :gengar:Gengar :scream tail:Scream Tail :armarouge:Armarouge :slowking:Slowking :slowbro:Slowbro :houndstone:Houndstone

Trick + Lagging Tail

This rather rare strategy is an interesting alternative to paralysis.

:gholdengo:Gholdengo:blissey:Blissey :grimmsnarl:Grimmsnarl :slowking:Slowking

Knock Off

Besides being a pretty powerful move, this rare treat is great at removing important items!

Likely to be major

:meowscarada:Meowscarada :great tusk:Great Tusk :iron treads:Iron Treads :iron valiant:Iron Valiant :tinkaton:Tinkaton

Likely to be niche

:cyclizar:Cyclizar

Trapping

Removing the ability to switch is quite powerful! However, the current ways of doing so are a bit limited outside of a few major options.

Trapping Moves

Likely to be major

:dragonite:Dragonite (Fire Spin)

Likely to be viable

:roaring moon:Roaring Moon (Jaw Lock + Shed Shell)

Trapping Abilities

You'd think trapping abilities would be REALLY scary, and they are... but the selection is rather limited this generation.

Likely to be niche

:gothitelle:Gothitelle (Shadow Tag) :magnezone:Magnezone (Magnet Pull)

Likely to be VERY rare

:dugtrio:Dugtrio (Arena Trap)

Disable

While not common, Disable can be horrifying against Choiced Pokemon, and in general is particularly effective at taking control of a foe.

Likely to be major

:dragapult:Dragapult

Likely to be viable

:scream tail:Scream Tail

Likely to be niche

:iron valiant:Iron Valiant :gengar:Gengar :sableye:Sableye

Cursed Body

:gengar:Gengar :dragapult: Dual Screens Dragapult

Speed Debuffs

In the fast paced world of 3v3 battles, speed control attacks can be quite useful!

Likely to be major

:annihilape:Annihilape (Bulldoze, Rock Tomb, Low Sweep) :breloom:Breloom (Bulldoze, Rock Tomb) :glimmora:Glimmora (Mud Shot)

Likely to be viable

:garchomp:Garchomp (Bulldoze, Rock Tomb) :tauros-paldea-blaze:Paldean Tauros-Fire (Rock Tomb) :hippowdon:Hippowdon (Rock Tomb)

Offensive Debuffs

These aren't terribly common, but some Pokemon have good reasons for using it!

Intimidate

This is by far the easiest way to debuff physical attack, even if the selection is not as good as you'd hope right now.

Likely to be viable

:salamence:Salamence :tauros-paldea-blaze:Paldean Tauros-Fire

Likely to be niche

:gyarados:Gyarados :tauros-paldea-aqua:Paldean Tauros-Water :krookodile:Krookodile

Chilling Water

This isn't a terribly common move, but it sees a bit of use

:toxapex:Toxapex :bellibolt:Bellibolt

Memento

This is a move to use if you are willing to go all-in on a specific set up for another Pokemon!

Defensive Debuffs

This is not something you'll see a lot of, but there is one interesting example to note!

Acid Spray

Acid Spray won't help you sweep like say, Nasty Plot would, but its secret is that Unaware walls don't really like facing this move!

Likely to be viable

:iron moth:Iron Moth

Likely to be niche

:bellibolt:Bellibolt

Stat Removal

These aren't particularly common, but Clear Smog and Haze are good options for the few defensive Pokemon that get them!

Haze

Offensive Roles

1-turn Set-up Sweepers

This is exactly what it says on the tin: these are very offensive Pokemon that only need one turn of set up to sweep! Note that some of these Pokemon can actually be bulky sweepers as well.

Speed Boosting

Since these boosts tend to be a bit lighter on the offensive side, a lot of these tend to be more late game sweepers than something you see breaking walls.

Finally, this will be... I dunno yet, whatever cool ideas we think of that we want everyone to see, might go here someday!

Bonnet bros... it's time.
For those that don't know: there's a reason I put +1 and +2 Brute Bonnet in the speed tiers. The Speed stat might be low, but some of us got WRECKED by Trailblaze Brute Bonnet back in November. It actually outspeeds some decent stuff, and that fast Spore can be pretty vicious with no Sleep Clause!

I'm unsure if Brute Bonnet will be a major shaping force of the metagame per se, but: it is HORRIFYING to face if you don't have a game plan for Speed boosted Spores, so it's at least something to keep in mind!

is it worth it to include +3 Iron Moth in there? it gets Agility :mish: or maybe include Agility with Quark Drive + Scarf
First off, you already know this but for everyone else: I added Agility Iron Moth! That thing goes stupid fast lol.

The other news: I got the first section of the Roles Compendium up: Hazards!

There will be WAY more than this soon, like dual screens, set up sweepers, encore, etc. But this is just a taste right now.

Please let me know if there's anything you feel should be added, or what you think of the formatting / style, since this isn't quite the same as other role compendiums.

That's really cool Rapid Spin can be a thing now. The spe boost and long time ago damage buff make it seem vaguely ok to me.

Wow. I think clear smoggers could be a thing but idk. For all I know I missed it, done that before. What is wrong w/ Sandaconda? For a 2nd glare user. I mean it's not great I suppose...but meh.

It does get rest Shed Skin and IronPress.

Oh good point about Clear Smog, I've now added that and Haze!

As for Sandaconda: I actually am likely to test that at some point because of Glare and Sand Spit being cool, but I'm colder on it than last gen because, the whole reason I had some success with it was because I used it with Excadrill, who got smacked by dexit this gen. Houndstone is sorta workable, but it just feels like an idea that is both untested and not "well this seems obvious".

I've now added Offensive roles to the roles compendium! Note I'll add a mixed attacking / maybe wall breaking section later too, but for now it focuses on set up sweepers.

Other stuff that will be coming soon includes: instant recovery, dual screens, pivot moves, priority moves / prankster, shed tail , baton pass, OHKO moves, choice mons, weather mons, and trick room setters

As usual, let me know if I missed anything! I'll be working overtime to try to get most of this done before Series 2 starts in 2-3 days!

I was reading through this and I noticed the Role Compendium is missing Iron Moth in speed boosting(Booster Energy), and spa boosting(Fiery Dance), and Volcarona is also missing there. I'd maybe put Iron Treads alongside Great Tusk in speed boosting via Rapid Spin as well.

Could dual screens/veil be a category? So sorry if I missed it, I've done that before lol.

I feel like I didn't miss it though. Aside from more obvious ones like Pult and Scream Tail, I think Sandy Shocks could be there.

Yeah there will def be a dual screen section. I've fallen behind ironically because of analyses. This weekend I will def be updating some stuff!

Also, I would like to know: do you folks prefer text next to the minisprites, or would you prefer minisprites that link to the dex with no text?

Idk about that, but for offensive debuffs,
could strength sap be a category? I loved it on Arboliva, and still love it on Drifblim. Polteageist gets it too. Speaking of Drifblim, I think it could be a clear smogger too. I think it's Viable cause of rabsca on here.

It's good there's a Taunt section. Could Mental Herb be a section? Cause mostly idk what would EVER run it, it's sorta niche. But it's also definitely not unviable.

Really useful list, thanks for putting in the work! But I think that the Hawlucha Unburden speed tiers are a bit off. With an adamant nature it reaches 340 speed, making it significantly faster than on this list.
Forgot to mention this, but I did infact address this a little while ago!

Anyways I added the 4 Ruins. To be clear this is a temp measure: there will be a NEW Speed Tier list for Regulation C that will be fully searchable with your browser's find functions, to make it easier to find stuff! But that's gonna take a bit of time, so I did do the minor updates for now at least! Similar deal with the Role Compendium.
