Hello!

With the first roomtour of Cycle 2 beginning tomorrow at 3 PM EST, we had to just get one more thing into place before we can start.

As I mentioned earlier, someone proposed in the survey that Moves and Items should cost more points to ban as they have an extremely powerful effect, more so than Pokemon bans. After some discussions with others on the Banhammers Discord, we've made a decision!

For Cycle 2:
- Banning a Pokemon will cost 1 point, like last time
- Banning a Move or Ability will cost 2 points
- Banning an Item will cost 3 points
- If you only gained a single point from the tournament (i.e. If you lost your one game in a single elimination bracket but you did finish the game), you are allowed to ban something that normally costs 2 points.

This new system does a couple of things, keeping the sheer number of bans down for easier teambuilding, adds more strategy to banning things, incentivizes getting far in tournaments so you're able to ban more things while keeping the gap between those who always lose early and those who always go far smaller, and more. I'm very interested to see how this system pans out over the course of Cycle 2, so I hope you'll join us for it!

As mentioned earlier, Cycle 2 begins tomorrow at 3 PM EST! As nothing's been banned yet, this tournament will be played using normal SV OU rules and it will be played on the main Pokemon Showdown server in the Pet Mods room! The Pet Mods room isn't public, so you either need to click the link in the last sentence or go on Showdown, go to the plus button where the chatroom are shown, scroll to the bottom, click "Join other room" and type "petmods". See you there!

Fun fact, PQRDG only got 2nd place in the tournament, with me winning, but since the tournament was double elimination and they lost round 1, they played and won so many games leading up to getting second that they managed to get more points than the winner of the tournament

This roomtour was just a normal OU roomtour, so there's nothing groundbreaking to take away from it, but there were a couple interesting occurences, like Sun being absolutely everywhere and being successful, too, and a few weird Pokemon already coming out before we even had any bans, like Dugtrio-Alola, Greedent, and Drifblim.

And now for what you're here for, the first bans of Cycle 2!

CYCLE 2 - WEEK 1 BANS
Pokemon: Kingambit, Tornadus-Therian, Sneasler, Ting-Lu, Corviknight, Ursaluna, Gholdengo, Enamorus-Base, Kleavor, Dragapult
Moves: Rapid Spin, Defog, Salt Cure, Spikes, Ceaseless Edge, U-Turn
Items: Heavy-Duty Boots, Booster Energy, Choice Scarf, Choice Specs
Abilities: Drought, Regenerator, Levitate, Purifying Salt
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ +Volcarona, +Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, -Kingambit, -Tornadus-Therian, -Sneasler, -Ting-Lu, -Corviknight, -Ursaluna, -Gholdengo, -Enamorus-Base, -Kleavor, -Dragapult, -Rapid Spin, -Defog, -Salt Cure, -Spikes, -Ceaseless Edge, -U-Turn, -Heavy-Duty Boots, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Drought, -Regenerator, -Levitate, -Purifying Salt

Definitely a few interesting bans here. The main thing about this set of bans is the hazard metagame, which has been mostly gutted. Your ways of removing hazards are now extremely limited (just Tidy Up and Mortal Spin to remove them, plus Court Change and Magic Bounce to punish others for trying to set them up) and you can't ignore them anymore with Heavy-Duty Boots, but on the flip side Spikes and Ceaseless Edge are now banned, as well as Kleavor if you wanna set rocks you have to risk being stopped by Magic Bounce or Taunt. I expect to see a lot of Glimmora and Webs next week to abuse this, as as more grounded Poison-types, Maushold, and Hatterene to try to alleviate hazard pressure.

The other main thing these bans did was making it harder to be super fast, getting rid of Choice Scarf (and Specs, we Gen 3 now), Booster Energy, and Dragapult. Fast sweepers don't have to worry as much about being revenge killed, while Speed control like Webs become even more valuable. Zamazenta (who went basically untouched surprisingly) is also now the fastest relevant mon outside of weather.

Also, note that the challenge command unbans Volcarona and Urshifu-RS, which were banned in OU earlier today, but were legal when the Cycle started, so they will stay legal until someone bans them. Can't have the OU council doing our job for us, unless they wanna join the tourneys.

That's all for now! I'll announce in the the Discord when teambuilder support for the metagame is live on DragonHeaven later, so stay tuned for that!

Lmao dawg what did Kleavor do to deserve a Week 1 ban?!?!?
Exist as part of the hazard game. Don't worry, other ways to set and remove hazards will be gone by next week too, such is the fate of banhammers. (Or you know we can agree to try to keep a metagame with just permanent rocks like DPP, could be fun, right? We could try that, right?)

A few interesting things to note. Mossy Sandwich won the tournament, gaining a whopping 14 points, which is most definitely a record. For the tournament itself, it was Hyper Offense everywhere. From Screens, to Webs, to "Hazard Lead + 5 setup sweepers", games were flying by and many a team was swept. Which is kinda wild, since a lot of good defensive things weren't even banned yet, but everyone collectively decided to make games end fast (me included) and I respect that. The MVP of the tournament was definitely Moltres-Galar, claiming many sweeps and with Mossy's Moltres in particular being a menace, as it was running Mirror Herb to boost alongside other Hyper Offense teams and sweep through them. Other notes were Landorus being #1 in usage (really abusing the fact that it managed to not get banned week 1), Toxic Spikes and Rocks were of course really strong, with our few removal options coming out to try and handle them (Cinderace, Glimmora, Poison-types, though no Maushold surprisingly), and Rain felt really strong but didn't really get used much disappointingly.

So, let's see what kind of bans this chaos brought us!

CYCLE 2 - WEEK 2 BANS
Pokemon: Volcarona, Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, Landorus-Therian, Enamorus-Therian, Tornadus-Incarnate, Thundurus-Incarnate, Thundurus-Therian, Moltres-Galar, Articuno-Galar, Zapdos-Galar, Great Tusk, Pelipper, Meowscarada, Hoopa-Unbound, Iron Valiant, Cinderace, Azumarill
Moves: Recover, Agility, Dragon Dance, Knock Off, Stored Power, Sticky Web, Surging Strikes, Taunt, Belly Drum, Stealth Rock
Items: Light Clay
Abilities: Protosynthesis, Quark Drive
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Kingambit, -Tornadus, -Sneasler, -Ting-Lu, -Corviknight, -Ursaluna, -Gholdengo, -Enamorus, -Kleavor, -Dragapult, -Rapid Spin, -Defog, -Salt Cure, -Spikes, -Ceaseless Edge, -U-Turn, -Heavy-Duty Boots, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Drought, -Regenerator, -Levitate, -Purifying Salt, -Landorus, -Thundurus, -Moltres-Galar, -Articuno-Galar, -Zapdos-Galar, -Great Tusk, -Pelipper, -Meowscarada, -Hoopa-Unbound, -Iron Valiant, -Cinderace, -Azumarill, -Recover, -Agility, -Dragon Dance, -Knock Off, -Stored Power, -Sticky Web, -Surging Strikes, -Taunt, -Belly Drum, -Stealth Rock, -Light Clay, -Protosynthesis, -Quark Drive

The main takeaway here is the insane amount of Pokemon bans, with nearly 30 mons getting banned between the bans itself and the 2 ability bans, which'll surely make the usage stats look quite different next time. Additionally, Pelipper being banned means we're down to Snow and Sand for weathers, and Stealth Rock and Sticky Web's bans means we only have Toxic Spikes left for hazards, so Rocks-weak mons can breathe a sigh of relief. Toxic Spikes being the only hazard is pretty interesting, as its arguably the weakest hazard but can still really change games. Be sure to pack grounded Poison-types.

That's all for now, see you next week for the third roomtour!

Couple things to note. First, you're probably wondering at how the heck Polteageist got up there, you'd think that thing would never sniff #1 in usage in any meta, let alone here where a lot of usually strong mons are still available. Well, the explanation is very simple and can be described in 3 phrases: Shell Smash, Hyper Offense, and Psychic Surge. This was another pretty Hyper Offense heavy weak, though far from that of last week, mainly featuring Psychic Terrain teams featuring Indeedee setting Psychic Terrain and Armarouge clicking Expanding Force. Polteageist was a fixture on these teams, getting to setup and sweep without having to worry about priority stopping it. The stats aren't super diverse in general due to repeated teams, but there was still a lot here, from Snow with Cetitan, to balance with Heatran, to Zamazenta who was legal and untouched somehow, and more.

Now, for the bans!
CYCLE 2 - WEEK 3 BANS
Pokemon: Dragonite, Heatran, Hippowdon, Mew, Pawmot, Polteageist, Zamazenta
Moves: Hurricane, Swords Dance
Items: Focus Sash, Loaded Dice, Quick Claw
Abilities: Psychic Surge, Static
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Kingambit, -Tornadus, -Sneasler, -Ting-Lu, -Corviknight, -Ursaluna, -Gholdengo, -Enamorus, -Kleavor, -Dragapult, -Rapid Spin, -Defog, -Salt Cure, -Spikes, -Ceaseless Edge, -U-Turn, -Heavy-Duty Boots, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Drought, -Regenerator, -Levitate, -Purifying Salt, -Landorus, -Thundurus, -Moltres-Galar, -Articuno-Galar, -Zapdos-Galar, -Great Tusk, -Pelipper, -Meowscarada, -Hoopa-Unbound, -Iron Valiant, -Cinderace, -Azumarill, -Recover, -Agility, -Dragon Dance, -Knock Off, -Stored Power, -Sticky Web, -Surging Strikes, -Taunt, -Belly Drum, -Stealth Rock, -Light Clay, -Protosynthesis, -Quark Drive, -Mew, -Polteageist, -Zamazenta, -Pawmot, -Heatran, -Hippowdon, -Dragonite, -Hurricane, -Swords Dance, -Quick Claw, -Loaded Dice, -Focus Sash, -Psychic Surge, -Static

Pretty lowkey bans this time around, but there are a few notable things to talk about here. A few OU/borderling OU staples that have surprisingly survived this long are now gone, being Heatran, Hippowdon, and Dragonite, as well as Zamazenta finally getting banned after I got to abuse it for 3 weeks. HO took a few more big hits with Psychic Surge, Focus Sash, Quick Claw, and Swords Dance being gone as well, but they'll probably adapt somehow. Aside from that, nothing too major, still lots of strong options left to use, which I look forward to see in the next tournament!

Also, this has been effect since week 1 but I forgot to announce it, so this is the formal announcement that the deadline for sending bans to me is now 11:59 PM EST on the day after the roomtour finishes. This is to give everyone around a week to build around the new bans.

That's all for now, see you soon!

Hello!

This'll be quick because it is 4:30 AM and the tournament in question was also very short, but we had the fourth roomtour of Cycle 2 last Saturday, so let's see what happened!

Now for the bans!
CYCLE 2 - WEEK 4 BANS
Pokemon: Volcanion, Baxcalibur, Zapdos
Moves: Spore, Toxic Spikes
Items: N/A
Abilities: N/A
/challenge [user], gen9ou @@@ -Kingambit, -Tornadus, -Sneasler, -Ting-Lu, -Corviknight, -Ursaluna, -Gholdengo, -Enamorus, -Kleavor, -Dragapult, -Rapid Spin, -Defog, -Salt Cure, -Spikes, -Ceaseless Edge, -U-Turn, -Heavy-Duty Boots, -Booster Energy, -Choice Scarf, -Choice Specs, -Drought, -Regenerator, -Levitate, -Purifying Salt, -Landorus, -Thundurus, -Moltres-Galar, -Articuno-Galar, -Zapdos-Galar, -Great Tusk, -Pelipper, -Meowscarada, -Hoopa-Unbound, -Iron Valiant, -Cinderace, -Azumarill, -Recover, -Agility, -Dragon Dance, -Knock Off, -Stored Power, -Sticky Web, -Surging Strikes, -Taunt, -Belly Drum, -Stealth Rock, -Light Clay, -Protosynthesis, -Quark Drive, -Mew, -Polteageist, -Zamazenta, -Pawmot, -Heatran, -Hippowdon, -Dragonite, -Hurricane, -Swords Dance, -Quick Claw, -Loaded Dice, -Focus Sash, -Psychic Surge, -Static, -Spore, -Toxic Spikes, -Volcanion, -Baxcalibur, -Zapdos

Only 5 things got banned and yet this week's bans are significantly more impactful than last week's lol. This is mainly because the last hazard move, Toxic Spikes, is now banned, meaning that the only way to set any hazards is through Glimmora or Glimmet's Toxic Debris. Aside from that, nothing too crazy, just removing 3 more high BST mons that were still kicking.

That's all for now, see you next week for the second-to-last tournament of Cycle 2!

Popping in for a quick second for two quick things.
First, a quick reminder that the fifth roomtour of Cycle 2 will be tomorrow at 3 PM EST in the Pet Mods room on Pokemon Showdown!

Second, since we're two-thirds of the way through Cycle 2, I figured it'd be interesting to check out the combined usage stats of all the tournament so far, seeing what commons mons have survived thus far and how much of an impact the early tournaments had on the stats before stuff started getting banned

A couple notes here:
- Landorus-T sits comfortably at #1, just like the days of OU's past. The fact that it didn't get banned until Week 2, meaning that it was legal for the 2 biggest tournaments, helped a lot. This also explains how Great Tusk and Iron Valiant came in at #4.
- In second place is a tie between the just now banned Baxcalibur and the most common still legal Pokemon, being Hatterene
- Polteageist is the only Pokemon that isn't OU in vanilla to crack the top 10, which was definitely mainly from its Week 3 performance. Polteageist is a UU mon, so that isn't too crazy, but it is a good example of previously (mostly) unseen things rising up in the absence of better options.
- Torkoal's 8 uses from exclusively Week 1 propelled it into the upper echelons of the list. It's still legal if you want to help it climb further, though Drought getting banned immediately should tell you why it hasn't been used since Week 1
- The most used Pokemon with a 100% winrate is a tie at 3 between Abomasnow and Cetitan, a core I've personally had a lot of success using recently
- Conversely, the most common with a 0% winrate is Braviary-H at 4 uses. Aside from the already banned Ursaluna, every Pokemon above it has at least 2 wins
- No NFEs or LCs have been used so far, meaning that we haven't quite sunken to the absolute depths yet but maybe these last two weeks will change that

I'll do this again after Week 6 to see how things change, but this does show that the metagame isn't changing nearly as drastically as it did from week-to-week in Cycle 1, but large changes are still quite evident, which I think is the happy medium we want to hit.

See you tomorrow for the next tournament!

Hello!

If you haven't noticed, I did not post tournament results for the roomtour yesterday. This is because, as you might've guessed, a tournament did not take place yesterday due to low turnout (as in I was the only person who showed up LMAO). But even outside of that, the writing was very clearly on the wall considering the fact that the fourth and fifth roomtours only had 2 entrants each, a massive drop off from the pretty high turnouts of the first 3 weeks. Thus, it's clear that interest in the roomtour aspect of this cycle has gone down to the point where we should move on to the playtesting portion of Cycle 2. As such, the sixth roomtour of Cycle 2 will not be rescheduled, making last week's roomtour the final roomtour and set of bans of Cycle 2. From here on, the tier will be tiered like a regular tier, but council can't unban anything that was banned through the first five weeks.

So, what kind of meta do we have now? I'll make some more detailed resources later (ik I said this in Cycle 1 and then never did but I promise this time), but I'll quickly list some mons I expect to do well:
:arcanine-hisui:With Choice Band still around and not having to worry about hazards anymore, HArcanine jumps out as a premier wallbreaking option. Banded Head Smash was already extremely hard to switch in to, but it's even harder now when you can't consistently pressure it with hazards or temporarily wall it with the likes of Great Tusk or Hippowdon. Plus, it's the best ESpeed user left with Dragonite gone and Lucario not being able to use Swords Dance
:kilowattrel:A mon I've gotten a ton of use out of in the last couple weeks, Kilowattrel in finally in an environment where it can be the premier Electric pivot it wants to be. It's still a bit weak (especially with Hurricane banned0, but getting to freely run Life Orb helps a bit, it has a pretty much unmatched Speed tier with the lack of Dragapult or Zamazenta (with the best Pokemon that's faster than it being Hisuian Electrode, which Volt Absorb Kilo walls, or maybe Barraskewda) and still gets to use Volt Switch. Plus, it can maybe kinda-sorta fill Zapdos' defensive niche since it can use Roost. Should be a great mon to throw on any offensive or balance team
:glimmora:Glimmora didn't lose much aside from hazards and Choice Specs/Scarf, which means that it still has Toxic Debris. With all hazard-setting moves banned, the only way to set hazards is through Glimmora's Toxic Debris, automatically giving it a niche. But even without that, Glimmora is still a bona fide OU mon that barely got nerfed, should be a great mon.
:slowking-galar:Another mon I've used a lot, losing Regenerator sucks and makes it die a lot faster, but aside from that it's still a great wall and pivot. Probably the best Poison-type not named Glimmora. Similarly, regular Slowking should also be pretty good as a bulky Water pivot as well.
:abomasnow::cetitan:I've abused this core for the last few weeks and it somehow dodged a ban each time, but with Drought and Drizzle gone and not having to worry about hazards anymore allowing Cetitan to run Life Orb or Choice Band, Cetitan becomes an actual threat in Snow, even with Belly Drum banned. Plus, with screens being dead as a playstyle, if you want to run screens, Veil Abomasnow is still okay at that.
:tyranitar::lycanroc::dugtrio-alola:I consider this in the weaker of the weather cores, though maybe I'm biased, but Sand can also thrive here with Great Tusk and Landorus gone.
:garchomp:Garchomp did lose a lot of its best tools in Swords Dance, Rocks, and Spikes, but with basically every other good Ground-type gone or nerfed to oblivion, Garchomp is once again the best Ground-type around, and by a pretty large margin too. When your next best bets are Recover-less Gastrodon, Krookodile, Sandaconda, Palossand, and Mudsdale, you should expect to see Garchomp a lot.
:skeledirge::basculegion::hatterene::zarude::rillaboom::maushold:While not too many, there are a good number of already good Pokemon that either managed to come out unscathed or only had one of their many options removed, so these should remain viable. Skeledirge only got buffed with hazards being gone and losing nothing, Basculegion is still Basculegion, just without rain usually, Hatterene only lost Trick Room, and Zarude and Rillaboom only lost U-Turn and Swords Dance, and even Maushold kept basically everything aside from U-Turn and Taunt.

We'll have to wait and see what rises to the top and what ends up needing to be banned in the future. To play this new metagame, I recommend using DragonHeaven's teambuilder to build a team, then going to the main server, setting your Tera types, and challenging your opponent there. However, with DragonHeaven's imminent Gen 9 update, you'll soon be easily able to play the metagame there as well.

Lastly, council member Ema Skye has left the council due to time constraints, which means that I'm looking for at least 1 person to add to the council. You'll be tasked with tiering for the rest of Cycle 2 and then helping me run future cycles during DLC metas. If you're interested in joining the council, just let me know on Discord!

That's all for now, hope to see you playing the new Banhammers metagame!
