Ubers Leader
[OVERVIEW]

Alakazam is one of the fastest out of the common leads in the RBY Ubers metagame, making it a valuable paralysis spreader for some teams. It outspeeds Gengar and can Thunder Wave to increase odds of Hyponsis not landing then fire off a powerful Psychic if not put to sleep, making it one of the few leads who can guarantee to at least status Gengar. While it does compete with Jolteon for this role of fast Thunder Wave user, Alakazam has a few key traits that keeps it above them. Reliable recovery and its choice of Seismic Toss or Counter are great against other leads and making progress long term, so combined with its much higher Special it helps Alakazam carve out a different niche from them. Alakazam isn't without its flaws, however, as it matches poorly into another common lead being Exeggutor and struggles to deal damage as the game goes on since Mew and Mewtwo are on all teams and are very naturally bulky.

[SET]
name: Paralysis Lead
move 1: Psychic
move 2: Thunder Wave
move 3: Seismic Toss / Counter
move 4: Recover

[SET COMMENTS]
Set Description
=========

Psychic, Thunder Wave, and Recover are mandatory, allowing Alakazam to keep up in the status heavy lead metagame and deal heavy damage, while also being able to Recover stall Pokemon like Chansey in the middle or late game. Seismic Toss and Counter are both good choices, while Seismic Toss gives solid reliable damage to chip Pokemon that aren't hit too hard by Psychic like Exeggutor or opposing Alakazam, Counter helps for catching opposing Tauros leads off guard should they try and Body Slam, as well as against hits from the likes of Snorlax. Counter doesn't OHKO Tauros or Snorlax after a Body Slam, though, while also running the risk of paralysis or a critical hit, so it's reliant on prior chip damage or to be used only if the extra damage compared to Psychic is necessary.

Alakazam gets its main usefulness out of trading status on lead and potentially absorbing an otherwise very threatening sleep, so it should essentially always be used in the lead. Unless it is put to sleep it doesn't usually make it much further in the game, aside from when it is used as a sacrifice. If it manages to trade status against another paralysis lead or against Tauros and can safely make it into the later game, then it should usually be the answer to the opponent's lead if it also survives or used against Chansey to stall it out of Soft Boiled and attacking moves.

Given the limited pool of Pokemon, Alakazam pairs quite well with almost everything available in the RBY Ubers metagame. It especially fits on paraspam teams, though, helping the likes of Rhydon, Snorlax, and Soft Boiled + Swords Dance Mew break through walls more reliably if they are paralyzed. Sing Chansey or Sleep Powder Exeggutor are also very good partners, making up for Alakazam being a lead that doesn't induce sleep. Pokemon like Stomp Tauros and Wrap Dragonite or Victreebel also appreciate the fact that Alakazam is a reliable Thunder Wave lead, allowing for more hax opportunities.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Kinesis can be used to lower accuracy against Pokemon like Mew, Snorlax, Tauros, or Mewtwo in a pinch which could otherwise sweep through a weakened team reliably. Kinesis is preferred to Flash due to the accuracy because the PP difference will very rarely matter, but it is still generally outclassed by Seismic Toss or Counter.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Jolteon**: Jolteon is one of the few paralysis leads faster than Alakazam, and unlike the even faster Electrode it can heavily threaten Alakazam with a no drawback Pin Missile, being able to 2HKO with 5 hits or some critical hits that have high odds.

**Mewtwo**: Mewtwo can survive multiple Seismic Toss and Recover while setting up with Amnesia. It also sometimes appreciates being hit by Thunder Wave, as it can then avoid being frozen by Ice Beam from opposing Mewtwo or Chansey.

**Exeggutor**: Exeggutor can Sleep Powder Alakazam then proceed to fire off powerful Psychics or Stun Spore to either take down Alakazam or heavily weaken an incoming teammate, which is something Alakazam lead tries hard to avoid. If Exeggutor has Rest, it's very difficult to remove without a lot of paralysis luck meaning it will stick around a game after the lead with its status healed.

**Bulky Normal-types**: Snorlax and Chansey are slow enough to not mind paralysis, and Snorlax can threaten to 2HKO Alakazam with Body Slam or potentially OHKO with Hyper Beam, while Chansey can inflict paralysis, sleep, or freeze on Alakazam in an extended interaction while doing a sizable amount of damage with Seismic Toss, forcing Alakazam to be vulnerable and use Recover.

**Slowbro**: Slowbro doesn't mind Thunder Wave and can use Alakazam to set up Amnesia while healing off any damage with Rest.

Just little comments, not QC team:

  • I don't know about even mentioning Trode, its honestly very much an unmon
  • Counter seems more OO than main set, really only helps vs lead bull or midgame vs lax if you catch it when Zam's at full HP and not paralyzed somehow, and this set means Zam is setup fodder for M2
  • Also on Counter, Countering maxroll Body Slam from bull doesn't OHKO so this seems absurdly dangerous, I'm sure Tauros is happy to roll 22% crit chance + 30% para chance to just get a KO for most of its HP and come back to paraflinch Mew/M2/Lax/Chans later or clean an endgame. Zam can just Psychic 2x and have great crit odds here and if it misses you have M2 forcing it out turn 3 at least
  • I think it should be noted that 2 mandatory huge BST psychic types in the tier make Zam far far worse than it is in OU even if its still viable; most leads are like, Gar/Zap/Bull/Egg for a reason and 3/4 of those match up decently into Zam with one just completely rolling it, and turn 1 Twave has even more risks in Ubers than in OU
  • I think M2 is a worthwhile "checks and counters" mention as a lot of M2 sets and situations it doesn't mind taking para and setting up, if either your physical offense has been weakened (snorlaxes traded, mew paralyzed) or if it has reliable answers to those things still healthy in back and can just stall for an opening. 1000x more true if its counter zam which effectively is setup fodder, but even Toss isn't great when its a 5hko

Ubers Leader
Implemented most of the above, will wait on more opinions for moving Counter to OO, idm tho since it's rare and usually just worse than stoss

I'm giving this QC 1/2 now that I can do that, second QC can give an opinion on Counter and more thoughts on changes. I may post some more stuff to follow up second QC after seeing what they say.

It outspeeds Gengar and can Thunder Wave to increase odds of Hyponsis not landing then fire off a powerful Psychic if not put to sleep, making it one of the few leads who can guarantee to at least status Gengar.
Got a Hypnosis typo here. Gengar's also probably a bit more afraid of Alakazam just clicking Psychic and either Psychic critting, or Hypnosis missing. That's one thing Gengar dislikes about Alakazam more than Jolteon, unlike with Jolteon it can't afford to stick around and try for Hypnosis due to the threat of STAB Psychic.

Reliable recovery and its choice of Seismic Toss or Counter are great against other leads and making progress long term
...
Seismic Toss and Counter are both good choices
Strongly disagree that Counter's a good standard choice. Tauros is unlikely to stay in on an unparalyzed healthy Alakazam which will most likely just result in Tauros being paralyzed and Alakazam being around for later. If Tauros is staying in on a full health paralyzed Alakazam, it's probably using Stomp, and opposing Alakazam is a rare sight so most likely you won't be Countering any Seismic Tosses. Counter should be in Other Options. I'd argue it should be used with Defense reduced to 110 (1 DV, 52 EVs), which actually can OHKO Snorlax and even Double-Edge Exeggutor. Full Defense Counter Alakazam just doesn't seem to me like it does enough to warrant use while reduced Defense Counter Alakazam has multiple different ways for a high level player to get a surprise OHKO with it.

Snorlax Body Slam vs. 110 Defense Alakazam: 268-315 (85.6 - 100.6%) -- 5.1% chance to OHKO
Tauros Stomp vs. 110 Defense Alakazam: 192-226 (61.3 - 72.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Tauros Body Slam vs 110. Alakazam: 251-295 (80.1 - 94.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Exeggutor Double-Edge vs. 110 Defense Alakazam: 192-226 (61.3 - 72.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Rhydon Body Slam vs. 110 Defense Alakazam: 201-237 (64.2 - 75.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Snorlax has 523 HP, Body Slam does 268 damage to 110 Defense Alakazam minimum, double that is more than Snorlax's HP guaranteeing a OHKO on a countered Body Slam. Alakazam's Defense would also be lowered enough that Tauros' Body Slam and Stomp will both result in being OHKO'd by Counter while not being able to OHKO Alakazam without a critical hit. As a bonus, 25 out of 31 rolls for Exeggutor's Double-Edge and Rhydon's Body Slam does enough damage to Alakazam that Counter will OHKO punishing an Exeggutor attempting to pressure Alakazam or a Rhydon trying to fish for paralysis on an incoming Mewtwo, Exeggutor or Flying-type and not expecting Alakazam to stay in. It does come with a downside though, in that STAB Hyper Beams and Rhydon's Earthquake are clean OHKOs.

Another potential Other Option is Submission.

Alakazam Submission vs. Chansey: 212-250 (30.1 - 35.5%) -- 32.2% chance to 3HKO

Doing permanent damage with Psychic with Chansey, Mew, Mewtwo and potentially Slowbro, Alakazam or Starmie around is quite difficult, so dropping it for Submission isn't unthinkable to make it better at bullying Chansey (and reduces opportunities for Chansey to fish for freezes or Sing against Zam) and pressuring other Pokemon to come in to handle Alakazam and risk taking paralysis as well.

Alakazam gets its main usefulness out of trading status on lead and potentially absorbing an otherwise very threatening sleep, so it should essentially always be used in the lead. Unless it is put to sleep it doesn't usually make it much further in the game, aside from when it is used as a sacrifice. If it manages to trade status against another paralysis lead or against Tauros and can safely make it into the later game,
I'd argue its main usefulness is getting paralysis *past* the opposing lead with Psychic/Seismic Toss pressure and on to Chansey, Mew or Mewtwo, all of which are good to paralyze for strong physical attackers like Snorlax and Rhydon and setup Pokemon like Slowbro and the Mews.

Given the limited pool of Pokemon
Drop this line entirely. Ubers actually has a surprisingly healthy pool of usable Pokemon, enough that if it were a regular tier it would probably have about 12-14 Pokemon "in the tier" (similar to OU's count) and another dozen or so Pokemon that could realistically fill out the C/D ranks.

**Jolteon**: Jolteon is one of the few paralysis leads faster than Alakazam, and unlike the even faster Electrode it can heavily threaten Alakazam with a no drawback Pin Missile, being able to 2HKO with 5 hits or some critical hits that have high odds.
I'd definitely not list Jolteon first among C&C, Alakazam vs. Jolteon is not that favorable for Jolteon and Alakazam is plenty happy to trade paralysis with it. Jolteon is a pretty mid check to Alakazam, it only really comes out ahead if lead Alakazam gets too greedy trying to 1v1 it instead of just crippling it with paralysis and letting teammates handle the now ruined Jolteon. All the Pokemon that actually easily switch into Alakazam (Psychics and Chansey) should all be listed first.

Mew is also missing entirely from C&C, if Mew is already paralyzed Zam has nothing more it can threaten Mew with and lets Mew get set up. Alakazam and Starmie should also be listed as checks as usual due to tanking Psychics/Seismic Tosses well with Recover and trading paralysis.

I'd recommend adding Rhydon, Golem and Sandslash as checks as well. If Alakazam is paralyzed/asleep (which it probably will be), these can easily come in on sleep turns/Thunder Wave/Seismic Toss/Recover/Full Paralysis and beat on Alakazam with their STAB Earthquakes. Rhydon also benefits from having SubRest as a set and not quite reliably being 2HKO'd by Psychic, reducing the danger of switching into Alakazam's Psychic, and Golem can always opt to trade with Explosion in a pinch.

Edit: Just noticed this
  • I don't know about even mentioning Trode, its honestly very much an unmon
Electrode's viability is low enough that it probably doesn't need to be mentioned, but it's not an unmon.

Edit2: One issue with Submission over Psychic, is that opposing Snorlax wouldn't need to be careful about switching into Psychic, once the set was revealed Snorlax could come in freely on Zam. For that reason, Submission Alakazam would need to be paired with a decent answer to Snorlax, such as Reflect Snorlax, Cloyster, Porygon or Aerodactyl.
