Comprehensive Guide to HP EVs in Gen 3 NU

The goal of leftovers Pokémon is to reach the optimal HP for maximum leftovers recovery. However, in the case of Pokemon with very low HP in relation to their defenses, they gain more value from having max HP investment regardless of suboptimal leftovers (ex: Shuckle, Lairon, Defensive Kingler, etc.)

The goal of non-leftovers Pokémon is to reach an HP stat that maximizes their capacity to switch into entry hazards (spikes).

The goal of substitute abusers is to ideally reach an HP stat that avoids destruction from Seismic Toss/ Night Shade (reaches 404 HP, substitute has 101 HP and doesn’t break to 100 damage)


These are ideal goals. However it must be said that EVing is dynamic, and often these ideal goals can be compromised by the need to invest elsewhere.


Important HP EVs are BOLDED


Leftovers


(HP number)/16 = Amount of HP healed each turn from leftovers (if a decimal, always round down to whole number)

Ex: 303/16 = 18.9375 = 18 HP healed each turn

Max HP should generally be used on Graveler, Togetic, Ledian, and defensive Kingler because their stats are highly polarized (low HP, high defenses)

0 EVs is practical on offensive Plusle and Butterfree. Arbok and Murkrow tend to always run Choice Band, so this isn’t applicable.

44 EVs is a good consideration on certain Plusle, Minun, Metang.

236 EVs fits well on screen setter Minun, bulky Metang, Pelipper, Parasect.

However, Metang, Dustox, Lairon, Pelipper may like max HP regardless of optimal leftovers because of their polarized stat spreads

There is no reason to not spare 4 EVs for HP on Chimecho, Flareon, Tangela, Volbeat, or Shelgon, even on offensive sets. Yanma and Poliwhirl don’t run Leftovers, so this benchmark does not apply to them.

196 EVs is a good place to end on defensive Chimecho variants.

Wigglytuff has an excellent HP stat and horrible defenses. It is preferred to add EVs to defense or special defense rather than HP, so the 44 EVs for 27 leftovers per turn is the only feasible benchmark.

Non-Leftovers (Choice Band, Lum Berry, Liechi Berry, Petaya Berry, Salac Berry)

Spikes damage:

1 layer – 12.5% damage (1/8)
2 layers – 16.67% damage (1/6)
3 layers – 25% damage (1/4)

To survive 4 switch ins onto 3 layers of spikes, you must not have an HP stat that calculates to a whole number for spikes damage from 3 layers. Avoid optimal lefties HP stats for these sets, as they result in a 4 hit KO from 3 layers of spikes (with no other chip).

HP stat must not be divisible by 4,6, or 8

(X) denotes that you faint after the respective number of turns (4, 6, or 8)
(*) indicates that you survive

Example: 304 HP
3 layers of spikes do 25% damage as you come in, 304/100 = 3.04; 3.04x25 = 76
76x4 = 304 (with this HP stat, 4 switchins into 3 layers of spikes will KO)

(1 layer) 304/ 8 = 38 (X)
(2 layers) 304/6 = 50.667 (*)
(rounds down to 50. Switching in 6 times to 2 layers adds up to 300 damage. 304-300 = 4 meaning you survive with 4 hp left)
(3 layers) 304/4 = 76 (X)


Meanwhile, 303 HP

303/100 = 3.03; 3.03x25 = 75.75 (rounds down to 75 damage)

303/8 = 37.875 (*)
303/6 = 50.5 (*)
303/4 = 75.75 (*)

Note: Reversal/ Flail sweepers should have an odd number of health

Belly Drum sweepers should have an even number of health (after a Substitute and subsequent Belly Drum, they will be in Salac Berry range)
