Year 2 of Sword & Shield Battle Stadium kicks off with the 2021 BSS Circuit! Just like last year, the Showdown portion of the circuit will consist of four tournaments: Open, Ladder Tour, Classic, and Masters. Returning to the 2021 circuit after a year's hiatus are circuit points (CP) from laddering on cart! See below for more info on how scoring will work for this portion of the circuit. To further encourage Switch play, we are adding an official cartridge tournament as an additional way to earn CP! You can think of this as a Switch-based ladder tour with a small playoff bracket for additional CP payout.

Based on player feedback from last season, double elimination brackets will not be returning to this year's PS tournaments. Instead we will be returning to more of the "last life bracket" approach from two years ago. The losers from each round will be able to play against other losers from the same round for a maximum of 2 weeks. In the event of a round with only three losers, a round-robin will be played to determine CP payout. Our hope in removing double elimination and modifying the last life bracket is to minimize both tournament length and CP farming to make the circuit both more competitive and to leave more time in the year for other tournaments!

And of course, the circuit wouldn't be complete without Invitationals. Invitationals will follow the same format as last year, with the top 12 in CP totals qualifying and the top 4 receiving a first round bye. The Invitationals winner will earn the coveted BSS circuit ribbon
on their Smogon profile!

  • Any tiebreaks necessary to determine byes/top 12/seeding will be decided by highest cartridge score
  • The circuit has a BFL (Best Finish Limit) of 3. Therefore, only your top 3 performances will count towards your ranking. In other words, having one bad tournament does not negatively impact you directly. Both cartridge results and the official cartridge tour count as tournament finishes and contribute to your BFL.
  • Point structure:
    • Showdown Tournaments
      • Players will earn the amount of CP equivalent to the last round that they won in before getting eliminated, not including activity wins. Each round won in winner's bracket gives 2 CP. Losers can play up to 2 rounds of "last-life" for up to 2 CP (1 CP per round win).
      • Winning the finals of a tournament will earn you 1 extra CP on top of the 2 CP for winning that round.
      • Ladder Tournament qualifiers will earn 6 CP for qualifying as 1st seed and 4 CP for seeds 2-4 in each cycle, and 2 CP per win in playoffs.
    • Seasonal Cartridge Results (BFL of 1)
      • Getting to Masterball tier = 2 points

      • 1800-1899 ELO in Masterball = 6 points

        • Cartridge results must be submitted on a separate thread within a month of season end (e.g. S14 results must be submitted before S16 starts)

INTRODUCING LIVE EVENTS
In our continued effort to create an exciting circuit, I am happy to announce that we are adding a new way to earn CP! Presenting: Live Events!

Live Events (BFL of 5 CP)
There will be two kinds of Live Events: Friendly Competitions on cartridge and Live Tours on Showdown. We will be hosting one official event per series ruleset. Presumably that means we will host a set of tournaments for Series 8, Series 9, and Series 10 during the 2021 circuit if we continue the trend of three month metas. BSSC participants may enter as many of these tournaments as they wish; however, you can only earn up to 5 CP combined from the Friendly Competitions and Live Tours.

Friendly Competitions:
  • Held on cartridge through Battle Stadium. A three hour laddering contest in which each player has up to 25 battles to climb as high as possible.
  • CP Payouts:
    • 1st Place: 2 CP
    • 2nd Place: 1 CP
  • Tentative Dates:
    • Series 8: February 5th, 8-11pm EST
    • Series 9: TBD (possibly early May)
    • Series 10: TBD (possibly early August)
Official Roomtours:
  • Held on Showdown. Participants will enter official roomtours that start at scheduled times and will earn points from each roomtour based on their finish. There will be four official roomtours per weekend for two consecutive weekends.
  • Official Roomtours will be held at different times to allow for players in all timezones to participate. For example, 12pm EST to cover US + European timezones and 8pm EST to cover US + Asia timezones.
  • The top four players in terms of total points will advance to a playoff bracket and have one week to complete their games for each round.
  • CP Payouts:
    • 1st Place: 3 CP
    • 2nd Place: 2 CP
    • 3rd & 4th Place: 1 CP
  • Tentative Dates:
    • Series 8: March 6-21
    • Series 9: July 9-August 1
    • Series 10: TBD (possibly September)

After a year of circuit tournaments and battles well-fought, we have reached the 2021 Invitationals. Here are the 12 players who have qualified for this year's invitationals and their seeds. marilli and 1TP also qualified in the top 12; however, they have informed me that they have retired and are not interested in playing, so the 13th and 14th-ranked players in CP total will take their place.

1. chemcoop - 37 CP
2. zaaya - 32 CP
3. greilmercenary9 - 26 CP
4. Kiby - 25 CP
5. GroudonEmpire - 22 CP
6. Mishimono - 21 CP
7. papiloco - 20 CP
8. Psynergy - 20 CP
9. luisin - 18 CP
10. cant say - 16 CP
11. MZ - 15 CP
12. Breckinridge - 14 CP

Ties were decided by highest cartridge rating as tracked in this spreadsheet.

Because we are currently in a ruleset which does not match "standard Get 8 BSS," the format for Invitationals 2021 was taken to a vote by the qualifiers. This resulted in the following consensus:
  • All sets are non-teamlocked and best of 5
  • Games can be played with Series 11 rules ONLY IF BOTH PLAYERS AGREE TO IT. If one player does not agree to playing Series 11, the set will default to Series 9.
  • Series 9 Rules
  • Series 11 Rules
Round 1 will be up November 14.
