The Official Glyx

Banned deucer.
In addition to the above results, the SM Council has also picked up discussion once again on potential action against Mew! While the Council has already discussed Mew a fair amount amongst each other, the general consensus is one of uncertainty, with multiple members suggesting that it could potentially become problematic down the line, as well as considering a potential suspect on it viable if the public interest in doing so is there.

In that regard, we have decided to open up a poll here on thread to see where people stand on the matter. Additionally, we'd love to see people posting their thoughts either here or on Discord! As for why we're looking into suspecting Mew in SM, Bopher made a notable post here detailing multiple aspects of how Mew has developed into something that is considerably more difficult to pick against than any other Pokemon, as well as suggesting that Z-Transform pushes it over the edge by dramatically flipping multiple losses that it would suffer from using most any other set into wins by being able to survive attacks and then use the opponent's Pokemon against them.

The poll will last about a week or otherwise until votes start to stagnate.

great number of diverse sets though, honestly exactly what a compendium should be

BW mono dog 1v1

This meta is a subset of gen5 1v1 where you can only use somewhat dog inspired pokemon. Everything I consider to be legal is in this paste: https://pokepast.es/35757189cf806899 (There is some level of controversy over raikou being a cat and while I do agree with this the raikou trio is the original mono dog so has to be included. Also I know that samurott is meant to be an otter but its design is clearly based off of a dog.)

The S tiers:

Lando-T

just an all-round very versatile mon, intimidate helps a lot with the majority of dogs being physically biased (though a very large amount of the dogs get intimidate), with great stats, typing and movepool. The best set in this meta would be adamant scarf in my opinion given a lot of dogs want to be running HP ice specifically for lando-t. I have even run modest scarf raikou specifically for this matchup. Also if you are planning on using gen5 mono dog in standard gen5 1v1 I would recommend an anti latios lando-t given it's a relatively hard mon to check with only dogs. If you don't mind losing to the relatively rare scarf latios you can just run scarf yourself or something like:

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Yache Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 76 HP / 92 Atk / 248 SpD / 92 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- Bulldoze
- Bulk Up

to make the matchup as safe as it could possibly be.

Raikou

By far the best of the original mono dog trio. Being a special attacker helps a lot against the massive amounts of intimidate users, also in standard gen5 1v1 a keldeo beating dog is very useful. For mono dog I would always recommend offensive (Specs/ Scarf depending on the team) as PP/Toxic Stall just doesn't beat much of the meta. Although a more offensive set with substitute can also be very useful at beating a lot of the A tiers that like to run giga impact.

Suicune

While I generally find suicune to be a bit underwhelming in gen5 1v1 generally it would be impossible to ignore how well it matches up into the vast majority of dogs. Also it can't be understated how good being a special attacker is for this format. The meta is generally too fast for stall to be great so I would recommend an offensive set bulked for band lando-t. Icy wind can also be a great tool in a lot of matchups which is why I generally like not being choice locked. The main strength of suicune is just being a water type with better stats than samurott, water types are just generally very good for this meta.

Suicune @ Water Gem
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 48 HP / 244 SpA / 216 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Icy Wind
- Hydro Pump
- Substitute

Bulk to live a stoutland banded/ normal gem giga impact, speed is to creep the common 260 speed tier for mono dog (252 invest stoutland gets to 259) and then SpA dump. Sub to dodge a lot of random jank.

A Tiers

Virizion

Good stats and typing for the tier, for an offensive mon it lacks immediate power but makes up for it in bulk. With the right set it can beat all 3 of the s tiers which is a massive benefit, however, it isn't really strong enough generally to warrant a place in the S tier.

Virizion @ Fighting Gem
Ability: Justified
EVs: 32 HP / 188 Atk / 72 Def / 32 SpD / 184 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Leaf Blade
- Swords Dance
- Protect

The standard sets comp fighting gem but with protect over quick attack is great for the tier (protect beats fly lando-t which lando-t always wants to be running in mono dog).

Entei

While I do think fire types can often struggle in this meta Entei's overall stats lets it bypass this weakness. While it does have better physical attack I would always run special given how prevalent intimidate is and entei getting eruption. Modest scarf can blow up a massive amount of the meta.

Lairon

While this is just worse aggron, aggron is not a dog and worse aggron is still great for this meta. With all of the fighting types and intimidate flying around this is not due to its stab head smash but rather sturdy metal burst given how much currently wants to be running choice. I anticipate as the meta develops there will be a shift away from choice but for the time being lairon does great.

Riolu

The second NFE A tier and the better of the 2 gimmick mons of the tier. There is also only one flying type and while a lot of things can run stuff like taunt/ quick attack to beat this it still 3-0 fishes nicely and beats a good portion of the meta.

Riolu @ Custap Berry
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 16 HP / 252 Atk / 240 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Substitute
- Dig
- Copycat
- Reversal
The rough gimmick is to substitute into custap range then dig once into copycat to get a prankster t1 that makes you invulnerable and min speed lets you move last on turn 2 to get free damage. EVs for technically optimal physical bulk not that it matters.

Samurott

This trades a significant loss on bulk and speed for a massive increase on power compared to suicune. Once again water types are just very good in mono dog and this thing blows things away with torrent water gem hydro cannon. Also encore is very neat at beating things like riolu.

Samurott @ Water Gem
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 132 SpD / 120 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Hydro Cannon
- Surf
- Encore

The spread that I've been using (literally cannot remember what the EVs are for but it has worked very nicely).

B Tiers

Terrakion

Great immediate offence with a stab combo to hit a lot, however, as great as it is on paper it doesn't match up great into a lot of the other dogs. That being said though it is still a terrakion and that makes it B tier.

Cobalion

In general I would say virizion does a very similar thing but better, however, there are differences mainly down to type and stat distribution that technically gives this a niche. And virizion is so great that being only slightly worse is still very viable. You also get the option for Iron Defence Rest stall which with 129 defence and a great speed tier beats a lot and is something virizion cannot do.

Granbull

By far the best counter user in the tier (Lucario and Houndoom don't have the defensive capabilities to very reliably do much with the move). Base 120 attack also lets you deal a ton with giga impact sometimes.

Granbull @ Chople Berry
Ability: Intimidate
Happiness: 0
EVs: 196 HP / 252 Atk / 60 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Counter
- Ice Punch
- Frustration
- Giga Impact

This is the set I've generally been using (bulky offence).

Stoutland

This is a very underrated pokemon in gen5 1v1 in my opinion. It generally does similar things to arcanine but with a worse stall movepool, however, it benefits massively from not being fire type which is one of the weaker types for this metagame. It also gets access to stab giga impact which off of a respectable 100 attack works neat.

C Tiers (they have viability but I wouldn't recommend using unless you need a very specific niche filled)

Arcanine

Despite being amazing in gen5 1v1 arcanine really struggles in mono dog given how much better entei is. Everything and their dog has intimidate and special arcanine is very underwhelming. The only set I would consider running is stall with will o wisp and snarl but this still feels a bit underwhelming.

Growlithe

For the stall set you can get bulkier with growlithe at the expense of an item slot and a lot of speed. I would say this is worse but it is also more dog like and still viable enough to have a mention.

Aron

The standard fear set is usable but not great. It is sometimes worth putting on a team for a 3-0 fish but it will often be dead weight.

Aron @ Berry Juice
Ability: Sturdy
Level: 5
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 196 Atk / 116 Def / 196 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 21 HP
- Endeavor
- Sandstorm

- Earthquake

Level 5 with 21 hp ivs is optimal for being the highest level where berry juice still always heals you to full EVs are to get to the highest speed and attack possible to do best in the mirror.

Unviable Options

Lucario

The closest in this tier to being viable, however, it just struggles to actually beat anything in the current state of the meta.

Houndoom

I used a lando-t lure set to some effect, however to say that this is anything but a gimmick on a bad mon would be disingenuous and the set also relied on surprise factor.

Houndoom @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 204 Def / 52 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Counter
- Nasty Plot
- Dark Pulse
- Overheat

Absol

A ton of fighting types and intimidaters means this just does nothing in the meta.

Manectric

This would be surprisingly good if raikou didn't exist, however, unfortunately for manectric it does.

Luxray

While this can beat a few dogs there will pretty much always be a better option for the team.

Mightyena

Genuinely horrendous stats that should never be on a fully evolved mon.

Lillipup

I don't think I need to say why this is unviable, however, thought I would post my funny attract set that I hope to some day beat a lando t with.

Lillipup (F) @ Eviolite
Ability: Vital Spirit
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Attract
- Toxic
- Rest
- Protect

(Female so that attract always works on lando t).

The Rest (unviable to the point where it's not worth explaining, however, I hope that with some meta developments I might see some cool sets for these one day).

After PL, I sent an ORAS and BW survey to the people that played the tiers. Thank you to the people that replied.

On ORAS: The general opinion is that Snorlax is broken and unhealthy to the metagame. PL has pushed Snorlax too far and with its stall set alone it is able to beat a huge chunk of the metagame, and when we add Bdrum and Curse to the conversation it creates more layers of setguessing. Choice Band is also a set that can catch a lot of Pokemon off guard, it has a bunch of coverage moves which allows it to run whatever it wants. Additionally, Fighting-type Pokemon aren't amazing in ORAS so being kinda forced to run one stresses teambuilding. On the other side, one may say, that Snorlax counters may adapt and we'll see more Substitute, SD usage for example, but nothing concrete for now. With support from the playing community and council Snorlax will be suspected in ORAS 1v1.

While Charizard has seen a lot of usage in PL, the general opinion is that its not unhealthy or too broken. It is true that its a centralizing force in the metagame but there has been a lot of new sets that can restrain it and we haven't seen anything crazy coming from it. Pokemon like Snorlax, Facade Malt, DD TTar, Rock Tomb Mega Diancie, Greninja variations, and Mega Gyarados have all been making zard manageable for now.

Qualifications:
  • Council member OR
  • ORAS Cup Finalists OR
  • Played atleast 3 series of ORAS in PL, and atleast won a game OR.
  • Played atleast 5 series of Multigen in PL, and is positive. (new)
I'll be sending a DM soon, if you don't and qualify let me know. (In the next 48 hours).

We have decided to omit WC from the qualifications list as the WC meta doesn't really mirror the current meta and the people that qualify from there stopped playing ORAS 1v1 as a whole.

On BW: There's concerns on Snorlax also in BW but the general opinion was to wait a bit and see how this Pokemon develop as we do not think that it is problematic enough to deserve a suspect. However, the community and council feel like we should suspect sleep inducing moves to stay consistent with other gens. We're also going to stay consistent with the qualifications and adapt ORAS ones.

Qualifications:
  • Council member OR
  • BW Cup Finalists OR
  • Played atleast 3 series of BW in PL, and atleast won a game OR.
  • Played atleast 5 series of Multigen in PL, and is positive. (new)

A supermajority of 60% was needed to ban a sleep inducing moves 11/15=73%, even if remaining voters vote DNB on all sleep inducing moves, the results will be the same. Therefore, Spore, Dark Void, Lovely Kiss, Sleep Powder, Hypnosis, Sing, Grass Whistle, and Yawn are now banned from BW 1v1. Tagging Kris, thank you.

Friendly reminder that sleep powder affects Grass-types in BW, and Relic Song has relevant use on Meloetta which is why it wasn't voted on.

:unown:
So I've realised that BW council likes making their tiering list alphabetical and would like to point out that Porygon-Z and Porygon2 both begin with the letter "P", which is the sixteenth letter of the Modern English Alphabet. These Pokemon are placed after some that start with "S", the nineteenth letter of the Modern English Alphabet. I believe that these changes would provide sufficient benefit to people who look at the BW 1v1 Viability Rankings to warrant their change.

:porygon-z:

DEG learn to alphabet shitpost aside, I'm nominating Porygon-Z to A at the lowest. Let me show some matchup spreads by calculating against every set of every Pokemon ranked "A-" or higher in the BW sets compendium while trying to find a winning matchup.

This Pokemon is definitely better than B+ because of the sheer amount of matchups it can win with a set. Out of all of the Compendium sets, it only loses to six sets of Pokemon that are rated at A- or higher. After seeing high usage in No Johns, I believe that the time is correct to raise this incredibly potent Pokemon.

Also DEG please fix the alphabetical order I am crying....

IVs: 21 HP
- Endeavor
- Sandstorm
- Toxic

12+ SpA Porygon-Z Hidden Power Fire vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Magnezone: 158-188 (56 - 66.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Magnet Magnezone Electroweb vs. 252 HP / 16 SpD Porygon-Z: 147-174 (39.3 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Porygon-Z Endure vs. 4 HP Magnezone: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252+ SpA Magnet Magnezone Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 16 SpD Porygon-Z: 255-300 (68.1 - 80.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
50-50 (zone can click magnet rise)
Just crit Dark Pulse. You have good odds of either flinches or crits. It's a hellish matchup that starts with a 50/50. I refuse to calc against Sableye because this matchup is just critfishing hell.
This statement is incorrect. You can't flinch because Sableye moves first, and serebii says that there's a 6.25% of critting in gen 5. It's also not a 50-50, sab clicks taunt, pz specs does 80 (252+ SpA Choice Specs Porygon-Z Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Sableye: 208-245 (68.4 - 80.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO), sitrus heals, sab clicks cm and pz does 53 (252+ SpA Choice Specs Porygon-Z Dark Pulse vs. +1 252 HP / 4 SpD Sableye: 139-164 (45.7 - 53.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO), and sab spams recover to heal off the damage. Technically pz still can crit due to the game going on for 30ish turns, but your argument is favoring pz much more than it should be.
Porygon-Z @ Chople Berry
Level: 100
Modest Nature
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpA
IVs: 2 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Shadow Ball
- Hyper Beam
- Uproar
- Conversion
Jank set (custap is a 50-50 as well)
252+ SpA Choice Specs Adaptability Porygon-Z Hyper Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Scrafty: 488-576 (146.1 - 172.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Scrafty lol (pz still wins)
Porygon-Z Trick vs. 96 HP Zapdos: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252+ SpA Adaptability Porygon-Z Hyper Beam vs. 96 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 406-478 (118 - 138.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
50-50
only loses to six sets
...With a ton of setguessing, 50-50s, and jank sets.
I do think that pz should be higher, but your argument was very bias towards pz. I also know it's possible to setguess by the looks of their team, but you can never be certain. Pretty good otherwise, if I made a mistake, feedback would be nice.
Isn't Raikou a tiger (and lairon is a lizard)
Edit: made the layout more cleaner

Um, download is +1? Also the idea is that it is difficult to shift gear due to being afraid of trick, once again a 50/50!
6/7 sets you win by clicking hp fire, so clicking trick is a bold move (still a 50-50 ig)
Adaptability gives it double damage after conversion, so the 50% actually ohkos after conversion! I have also tested this against some friends in battles so yea!
Didn't think of that, thanks for pointing that out
Idk, apparently Specs Hyper Beam kills all of them! Kinda nice ngl!
Meant to say most of them are 50-50s (due to custap) not setguesses, mb
All the sets are compendium sets so please use the corresponding names to find them...
Never knew defensive pz existed, mb
I am clicking Uproar because you always win by clicking Uproar apparently.
Meant to say 50-50 again, thundurus t can click toxic -> fly -> protect to win if pz clicks uproar
There, you made me do that math... I hate my life...
lol (forgot that foul play isn't ran with cm, mb)
Edit:
Modest Porygon-Z kills with Scarf anyway!
252+ SpA Adaptability Porygon-Z Hyper Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Suicune: 326-384 (80.6 - 95%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
50% for a double protect which makes you lose, however clicking trick as pz wins, so it doesn't matter (because of leftovers)

The Official Glyx

Banned deucer.
Boat has been added as the newest member of the SM Council! Welcome aboard and congratulations!

Additionally, since the deadline came and went for the Mew poll with nothing being said publicly, it is worth clarifying that the general consensus among the Council was that it's best to wait for 1v1 WC to conclude, so that we can see if Mew is still putting a strain on people's prep, alongside how people approach it in the actual battle, and then suspect it.

ADV 1v1 has turned a new page,

:rs/zapdos: Zapdos has been quickbanned from ADV 1v1 :rs/zapdos:
LRXC :Ban
pqs : Ban
Murman : Murmban
Urfgurgle : Abstain
Adam3560 : Vote not counted yet (But it doesn't matter as a supermajority is reached anyway

Zapdos has always been a great Pokemon in ADV 1v1, ever since its conception, but truly only recently after the Clefable Ban in ADV 1v1 Duo Swiss, did Zapdos continue to develop into the metagame tyrant it is, or was, today. Previously only weilding the Substitute+Protect Pressure Stall set many people feared, often with Thunderbolt and a Hidden Power, two new sets entered the fray in late 2020 for ADV Cup 4, Choice Band and Metal Sound. Choice Band was instantly seen as a threat, but never used enough. With Choice Band Drill Peck and Hidden Power Fighting, Zapdos was now able to demolish some of the Pokemon that tried to answer it best, such as Sceptile, Celebi, Alakazam, Tyranitar, Blissey, and even a favorite creation of mine, Kecleon. Then, Metal Sound. Metal Sound was an original tech of mine to counter Calm Mind Dusclops, and if you chose to run mono tbolt Meteal Sound, with sub+protect, you could handle Blissey(which often lacked Seismic Toss at the time in favor of Counter). I credit pqs and others for, during Duo Swiss and especially RoA Swiss last year and ADV Cup last year, in fully fleshing out the power of Metal Sound+Petaya Zapdos, the best set by far. With Zapdos's great natural typing, only weak to Ice and Rock, along with its speed, it is usually able to Metal Sound an opponnet, be hit into petaya range OR sub into petaya range, and fire off a tbolt at a +3 advantage, often KOing the opponnet. Firing off two tbolts in general was always enough to destroy the foe. This, along with Zapdos being able to handedly bulk faster mons such at Petaya Starmie's Ice Beam and even Aerodactyl's Rock Slide, left supposed hard counters to Zapdos to be very slim, including Raikou, Counter Blissey, Counter Regice, Registeel, and Pokemon that try to speedtie it or outspeed it with Toxic such as Tauros, Jirachi, or Entei. This, along with new developments such as Agility, to counteract pokemon that may have had a chance before, such as pokemon bulking tbolt and using a speedboosting move/salac, and opposing Zapdos. Zapdos has become too much for the tier. Cycle 1 of this Ladder Tournament has made it as clear as ever.

Thankfully, and honestly almost beautifully, ADV 1v1 has a ladder right now, which means that it gets something no other Old Generation has ever had (besides SM), which is the opportunity to develop with a playable ladder, especially IN a ladder tournament, along with RoA hosting their tournament, and the ADV 1v1 LT playoffs in August, ADV will see some surprising development. And on a personal note, as one who probably cares wayy to much about a niche competitive Pokemon tier, I too am excited for this new chapter of ADV 1v1, albeit nervous. Excited to experience ADV 1v1 in a totally new way without Zapdos, and see what is viable and what isn't, what new mons can rise up, but at the same time nervous, because of the potential bland path ADV 1v1 could head towards(I don't think it will be this way).

Either way, ADV 1v1 has OFFICIALLY banned Zapdos, and I am proudly tagging Kris to impliment by the beginning of Cycle 2 of the ADV 1v1 Ladder Tournament, Sunday at Midnight, GMT-5. Obviously Zapdos will still be allowed for the remainder of Cycle 1, and I am tagging TDR to inform the RoA tournament!

As far as resources go, because this is such a drastic change to the tier, the Samples, Sets Compendium, and Viability Rankings will be updated and implimented in the sweet spot between the end of ADV 1v1 Ladder Tournament Playoffs (August 28th) and the start of ADV Cup in the eventual 1v1 Classic VII! (Late September/Early October)

ADV WOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo
