1v1 Metagame Discussion

This thread will be used for discussion of the 1v1 metagame. This includes discussing metagame trends and strategies you enjoy using. Please be constructive and thoughtful with your posts. One liners or shitposts will be deleted, and disrespectful behaviour will not be taken lightly.

If you disagree with a decision made tiering-wise, and made no effort to communicate your concerns while discussion was happening when you were around, don't suddenly come out against the decision. Make your thoughts known beforehand.

Terastallization is the new mechanic introduced in SV similar to Dynamax in SS, Z moves in SM, and mega evolutions in ORAS. It allows you to change your typing and receive changes to how your offensive STABs work as a result.

The specifics:
- You select you Pokemon's tera type in the builder where you choose its gender and whether it's shiny or not
- Any Pokemon can use it
- Your Pokemon's type becomes a new pure type and your type resistances, weaknesses, and immunities will change to match (ex: Tera type poison volcarona becomes a pure poison type and is now immune to being poisoned)
- Your Pokemon will get a STAB boost to moves of its new Tera type while still retaining STAB boosts on moves matching its original typing
- If you Terastilize into a type your Pokemon already had, then your Pokemon will have a 2.0 boost (like Adaptability) on attacks with that type (currently commonly referred to as same type tera boost)
- The new move Tera Blast is base 80 and will match the Tera type chosen, while also turning physical or special, depending on whichever stat is higher (like Photon Geyser)
- Terastilized Pokemon cannot have their typing changed. This means moves like soak and abilities like Protean will not change its typing

Since this is a new and game changing mechanic it is being watched by the 1v1 Council to see whether a healthy meta can develop or if it will end up like Dynamax in SS 1v1

Tera has been banned from SV 1v1 with plans to suspect it at a later date

(extremely) early thoughts:

ban dnite it got encore enough said

ban tera it turns the meta into a speed reliant ohko fest and extremely cheesy, defined counterplay is easily thrown completely out the window when you go into the realm of giving pokemon new types

ban mimi please i hate this thing already lol.

the mega man guys are bad

meow is mid surprisingly

my paradox rankings were mostly right (subject to change) + still holding out hope for iron treads as it has rock tomb + ice spinner as well as okay bulk making it a solid dnite counter (just dont get cheesed by wp tera ground eq ig)

the "dark tapus" are solid i think rankings go like fire dark -> ice dark -> ground dark -> grass dark

gholdengo better than expected cause steel type draco meteor although itll probably worsen after tera ban

i havent found must-use cases for any of the new items but

loaded dice is way better than expected in terms of its effect but i struggle to think of any real abusers. maybe breloom after the meta settles down but honestly i dont think breloom will even be that good anyway

ability shield might see some fringe usage

booster energy is solid but surprisingly not overbearing or even necessarily that good (for example, sometimes you really want the spa boost on something like iron bundle, so youd rather run specs)

clear amulet seems cool for solidifying some mons matchups (thinking mostly about mons that got cheesed in ss by stat reduction like regidrago vs avalugg)

covert cloak wouldve been pretty solid last gen cause of toge but with scalds removal and togekiss being snapped i dunno

Saving this spot for later,
Terratype absolutely needs to go. You can protect t1 but there is no prediction unless you have seen the set before.

Moves to abuse: Body press - all these 150+'s get fighting stab now. Facade - all these guts mons get normal typing or can pivot from steel & toxic orb / fire & flame orb to activating them. Reversal - fighting + custap unleashes the horrors of 300bp semi priority to the masses or more if you already had fighting stab. Curse can pivot into being used in both ways depending on whether you start as ghost or not.

Abilities to watch out for: Levitate + Electric. Easy pivot into being typeless. Wonder guard: do I need to go further.

Positives: you can block prankster with dark, powder moves with grass, and get around toxic stall as mentioned earlier with steel. Plenty of defensive methods. But not enough to warrant its stay.

Conclusion: With the 30 minutes of this not-fully-implemented meta, tera type is impossible to predict, pushes the meta towards the fast offensive, and is hard to make creative sets when the impending PZ, Darm G, & Dracovish are on the horizon. B&

I think as a shock to no one tera is insanely broken I don't think it's worth considering any other ban until tera is gone. u could ban the 20 best abusers and it would still be uncomp unbalanced garbage. every mon has access to amazing mono-types (water fairy steel ground stand out as especially nonsense) which makes not only clicking but even in-game a complete guessing game. banning booster energy and tera blast probably helps but marginally you don't really solve the core issue that good mons can just suddenly disregard the type chart.

this meta looks really fun, I can't wait to play it after tera. I pray we hold off on any tiering action until tera is gone because that obviously has a drastic affect on any other potential ban.

Blanched

Banned deucer.
yeah tera is incredibly uncompetitive for a 1v1 meta, calling for a tera quickban immediately. zero opportunity cost to flip all of your matchups while also being completely untelegraphable. i personally would like to start actually developing the meta and its clear that this gimmick is not going to stick around for the whole metagame so i dont see a point in keeping it around just because it was implemented wonky and gave a few mons a slightly stronger offensive toolkit. as soon as tera is gone we can start focusing on the plethora of insanely powerful mons sv added but its impossible to tell if any of them fit into a healthy metagame when all you can play is "guess what type your opponents pokemon actually are" and "will they tera or wont they tera?" 50/50s. also there has been community interest expressed in an early unofficial lt so ideally there will be a real game to play then for the sake of sv developing towards a more balanced meta as pl approaches.

Honestly, I wonder if instead of banning tera we had tera types show on team preview. The attack boost or coverage from having three stabs might still prove over-centralizing on top mons, but considering the new paradox forms it's looking to be a fairly centralized meta at least until a healthy number of quickbans suspects and bans. It adds so much extra depth to team building and a lot of the problem right now seems to be the will they won't they what are they, which showing on team preview would remove the most absuvie part of. The nukes it creates are probably stronger than the ones we had in gen8, but by how much? Are the best abusers going to be able to only run life orb and get away with ohkoing the entire dex or will truly hyper offensive mons have to be choice locked like many nukes in gen8? I think we should maybe give tera disclosure a try if just to play with the new mechanic for a little longer. What's truly stupid is not knowing at all what the other mons typing is or might be next turn and maybe not necessarily that both players can change type once throughout the match.

A bit of devils advocate: if we did wind up with a more settled (if not stable) tera meta, I could see a world where the worst tera abusers wind up with a number of different viable tera types each of which necessitate different checks. In that case, it could get to the point where it becomes impossible to build a team where the number of 3-0 matchups are at a healthy level which would necessitate a tera ban, but honestly I think it's impossible to know before the proposed meta actually gets explored.

tera is a blatantly uncompetitive mechanic in a 1v1 setting; I'm jumping aboard the "quickban this ASAP" train. I think this should supersede any specific bans on specific Pokemon, but given how Sableye seems to have its same traits as in SS it's high on my radar of potentially banworthy threats. Booster Energy feels really strong but it's probably balanced

Yung Dramps

awesome gaming
Hey all! It's been a long time since I played 1v1, and I might try to get back into it. A quick night of laddering got me to 1400, and while that's still low ladder scrubbery in the grand scheme of things I think it's enough de-rusting to allow me to deliver a tentative voucher for this mon.
Normal Sprite

Tauros-Paldea-Water @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 200 HP / 252 Atk / 56 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bulk Up
- Wave Crash
- Close Combat
- Aqua Jet

Fighting/Water's a pretty handy type with some key offensive and defensive advantages with Intimidate further bolstering it. With that in mind, you can run this nice Bulk Up set. Speed EVs creep Iron Thorns, which probably isn't that good but hey I couldn't think of anything else it'd like to creep lol. Tera Grass is to meme on Electric and Grass answers. Wave Crash is 100% worth the extra damage over Raging Bull, trust me. Overall, I sense a possible high C rank/low B rank from this guy down the road. Not top-tier, but has a firm niche all the same.

I have played for about 2h(keep elo: ~1400) and from what I could find in this initial chaotic "meta" is that this iron treads set is pretty reliable even in the face of transliteration as it more often then not does survive most first attacks
View attachment 466926
Iron Treads @ Assault Vest
Ability: Quark Drive
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 180 Atk / 80 Def / 136 SpD / 112 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Heavy Slam
- Knock Off
the attack stat is to two hit even bulky mons (no specific bench marks just feels and experience)
the speed is to outspeed bulky roaring moon which is mostly from the amount of remaining ev`s
the defense ev`s are mostly eyeballed to be enough
it doesnt relay on tera and counters most mons that do as it survives to reveal the openents tera type and the attacks have prety good coverage
the last attack can be changes based on team needs tough I had good result with either body press or ice spinner

it does however somehow strugle with super phys def mons like avalug

Tera has been an incredibly controversial thing to keep in and many dislike it. Despite this, the metagame is interesting and I would like to bring my thoughts on it. This can be used as a sort of guide also? Discussing some of the sets and what make the Pokémon good.

I have not noted every single good Pokémon here, just the ones I have used and the ones I believe to be the best.

UNBANNED OLD TIMERS:
This Pokémon is a menace, no matter the generation in 1v1 this thing is a beast and it feels like Tera only makes it better. It can run Fire-type and Steel-type Tera forms to handle the Fairies that usually kill it. These typings can also help it beat opposing Dragon-types such as the newly introduced Roaring Moon. The Steel-type Tera set usually consists of using Iron Head and Thunder Wave to make the opponent unable to move, this combined with Encore and Roost can be a devastating set. You can also run Extreme Speed over Thunder Wave for certain matchups. The lesser used Fire-type Tera set is just as deadly, usually running Life Orb as it throws out Outrages and Tera Blasts.
This Pokémon gained as negative attention upon being unbanned as Dragonite did, Mimikyu's main set is using Curse, Substitute, Protect and Phantom Force paired with a Salac Berry to harshly deplete the opponent's health while remaining practically invulnerable with it's moves and ability. It commonly runs Steel-type and Normal-type Tera for defensive reasons. This Pokémon's counters are more set and stone than Dragonite's and usually falls to fast Encore Disablers such as Iron Valiant and speedy Taunters. This does not mean this Pokémon doesn't have amazing set variety though.
The least controversial out of these three is Sableye, this Pokémon has landed itself a place in the metagame for outspeeding fast Booster Energy abusers with it's Prankster ability and being able to use Disable + Encore on the entire metagame. Trick Scarf + Disable is also a notable set. This Pokémon is surprisingly balanced, in my opinion at least. It runs Steel-type Tera for defensive reasons. It could probably be able to get away with Normal-type too but I don't know what for.

PARADOX POKEMON:
Brute Bonnet is an insane Pokémon and a Paradox Pokémon which allows it to abuse Booster Energy. Booster energy brings 1.5x to their highest stat. Brute Bonnet puts foes to sleep and uses it's high attack stat to finish them off. Popular Tera-types on this Pokémon consist of Water, Steel and Dark. It can run an offensive set with attacking moves such as Sucker Punch and Seed Bomb or a more defensive set with Body Press and Payback. I do believe the defensive set to be inferior though.
This is a fast Pokémon with Encore + Disable. It uses Protect on the first turn to scout out what the opponent does. It's usage is basic and it uses Moonblast as it's offensive move of choice, Spirit break is also an option. It uses Steel-type tera for defensive purposes.
Inferior to Iron Valiant and Sableye. Has no niche.
The fourth fastest Pokémon right now and the only one which can safely give itself a 1.5x boost in it's speed stat. This one is generally underused but I enjoy running Hydro Pump + Ice Beam paired with Encore and Taunt. There is room for Freeze-Dry in this set.
I enjoy running Sludge Wave, Flamethrower, Flame Charge (Helps against Mimikyu) and Overheat with it's set. Overheat can be swapped out for Tera Blast with a Tera type. Another Pokémon that I don't see a lot, it can boost one of it's types with Tera or abuse another.
Strong Pokémon with a massive Defense and Attack stat. Has an incredible Ground-type move in Headlong Rush and can run a Fighting-type or a Ground-type Tera to boost it's damage.

OTHER NOTABLE NEW POKEMON:
This fish is insanely powerful, possessing an ability to lower the opponent's Special Defense by 25% while having a monstrous Special Attack stat makes this thing a beast. It runs Nasty Plot, Tera Blast, Flamethrower and Dark Pulse usually paired with a Life Orb to boost it's power further. This Pokémon melts a lot of teams and can run a Poison-type Tera to resist Fairy-type attacks coming it's way and hit them hard back.
A Pokémon I have enjoyed running on ladder, Protect Sub with Leech Seed paired with a Poison-type tera has been my favourite thing to run so far. It survives a lot of hits and the versatility of being able to be Grass, Normal and Poison defensively makes this Pokémon almost guaranteed to lay down a Leech Seed unless it is outsped or hit with a monstrous attack or special attack stat

In my opinion i feel that the meta is very OHKO reliant which is good in my opinion because the cheesy strats are weird i have seen some of these cheese strats and they need to go or the mons that use them such as Iron valiant, also meta is quite obvious but no1 uses it

Edit 1 - I only say valiant since its the fastest pokemon with its ability so it guarantees a kill on your pokemon (nearly) however if u skill issue with it (very rare) you lose
