Despite Game Freak's best efforts, 1v1 players can turn Meowscarada into a passive Pokemon! With Leech Seed, Substitute, and Protect, Meowscarada becomes nearly unbreakable if it is not OHKOed on the first turn. Protean is a potent defensive ability; becoming a mono-Grass-type with Leech Seed surprises Annihilape, whereas transforming into a Normal-type with Protect helps against Gunk Shot Donphan and some Iron Valiant. To round out the set, Taunt shuts down Sableye, but Flower Trick is helpful for slower Great Tusk. Mental Herb lets Meowscarada set up Leech Seed and Substitute against Taunt and Encore users like Annihilape and Corviknight, and low HP investment maximizes Leech Seed recovery. Meowscarada struggles against many strong, fast attackers like Chien-Pao, Talonflame, and Dragapult, as well as sound move users like Torch Song Skeledirge and Hyper Voice Sylveon that bypass Substitute. To defeat these Pokemon, consider using partners such as Dondozo, Azumarill, Sylveon, and Arcanine when building a team around this set.

Taunt will shut down Espathra

It's mostly more for Sableye. Espathra does run Dazzling Gleam sometimes, which quite easily 2HKOs.

Sableye can't really do much against Taunt variants anyway, so maybe finding another example could be better here.
