SM OU Next Best Thing, Week 16: Excadrill

Cold Heat
1709337819021.png

Volcarona @ Psychium Z
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Psychic
- Bug Buzz
- Hidden Power [Ground]

Normally, Volcarona has to choose between hitting Heatran or hitting Toxapex. But what if you can do both at the same time? Well look no further than Cold Heat Volcarona. As the name of the set implies, there's no fire STAB here. Other than that, it does what Volcarona does best: Set up and bowl over the opposing team. It does mean that Steels such as Mega Scizor, Celesteela, and Skarmory are able to wall it more freely. Thankfully, Magnet Pull is a thing, which makes losing Fire STAB less of an issue than losing Bug STAB. Just like with the standard set, this set appreciates teammates that can keep hazards off the field such as Excadrill and Taunt + Defog Serperior. Mega Charizard X pairs well with this set as it appreciates Volcarona removing Heatran and Toxapex for Zard to clean up.

Psychium Z was chosen to ohko any Toxapex without a Payapa berry after a quiver dance.

Week 14: Tornadus-Therian
:sm/Tornadus-therian:
Tornadus-T is one of the best offensive pivots and Defog users in the OU tier and a solid pick on a variety of team archetypes ranging from offense to balance thanks to its great Speed tier, decent bulk, and more importantly its access to Defog, which allows it to beat entry hazard setters such as Clefable and Ferrothorn with the right set.
Your goal this week is to post creative and viable movesets for Tornadus-Therian that are NOT listed as sample sets in its SmogDex entry. You have 4 days from now to post sets, after which the voting phase will begin.
Deadline: 11th March 2024 11:30PM, GMT + 5:30.

Assault Vest Icy Wind Defensive Pivot General Annoyance Tornadus-T

Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 60 HP / 196 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Icy Wind
- Knock Off
- U-turn

Assault Vest Tornadus-T is a fun option for certain offensive teams that appreciate the high speed tier, powerful Flying-type STAB, and decent bulk it can provide, since Regenerator allows it to stay healthy throughout a match. Since we're not running Defog here, I'm using Icy Wind instead since it helps the matchup against Landorus -T, which quite freely switches in against Tornadus. 196 SpA allows Icy Wind to always 2HKO 244 SpD Gliscor, while the rest of the EV spread was invested into Speed to maintain Tornadus' excellent speed tier and the rest dumped into HP to further bolster Tornadus' bulk. Knock Off further helps Tornadus by amputating Toxapex's Black Sludge and Landorus-T's Choice Scarf, even occasionally hitting Gliscor on the switchin. This set drops Heat Wave which you'd typically find on something like this to deal with Ferrothorn, or Scizor, so I suggest a strong teammate such as Z-Focus Blast Magearna or Magnezone to deal with them.

Choice Specs Tornadus-T

Tornadus-Therian (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 64 HP / 252 SpA / 192 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Focus Blast
- Sludge Wave
- U-turn

Choice Specs-boosted Hurricanes from Tornadus-T are a force to be reckoned with, especially on rain teams since Hurricane doesn't miss under rain. Focus Blast trashes Steel types that resist Flying like Heatran, Excadrill, and Magnezone while also hitting Tyranitar much harder. Sludge Wave hits Fairy types like Clefable and Tapu Fini while also catching Tapu Koko on the switch. U-turn is the last move, taking advantage of forced switches, Regenerator, and its great Speed. 192 Spe enables Tornadus-T to outrun Serperior while the rest of the EVs are put into HP to improve Tornadus-T's bulk while still hitting as hard as possible. Heat Wave is an option over Sludge Wave if this set is used outside of rain to deal with Celesteela and non-AV Magerna while still landing a crucial hit on Excadrill, Magnezone, Ferrothorn, and Mega Scizor.

The damage calculator showcasing a few examples speak for themselves:

252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Sludge Wave vs. 248 HP / 40+ SpD Tapu Fini: 194-230 (56.5 - 67%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 180+ SpD Heatran: 256-302 (66.3 - 78.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 261-307 (66.2 - 77.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Choice Specs Tornadus-Therian Heat Wave vs. 248 HP / 232+ SpD Celesteela: 202-238 (50.8 - 59.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Week 15: Mega Latias
:sm/latias-mega:

Mega Latias is a metagame staple thanks to its bulk, movepool, and defensive profile. It can come in on various common offensive pokemon like Heatran, Kartana, Landorus-Therian throughout a game. It can also be a good win-condition with Calm Mind sets.
Your goal this week is to post creative and viable movesets for Mega Latias that are NOT listed as sample sets in its SmogDex entry. You have 7 days from now to post sets, after which the voting phase will begin.
Deadline: 23rd March 2024, 11:30PM GMT + 5:30.

Psycho Shift + Calm Mind Latias
:sm/latias-mega:
Latias-Mega (F) @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power / Psyshock
- Psycho Shift / Magic Coat
- Roost

Similar to standard CM Mega Latias, except it sacrifices coverage for the ability to ensure itself against status, something that has given me trouble when trying to use this set. Psycho Shift can be used any time you are statuses and can surprise punish foes like Glare Serperior, while Magic Coat has utility beyond blocking status, such as deflecting hazards, but requires more careful prediction.

Subsitute + Calm Mind Latias
:sm/latias-mega:

Latias-Mega (F) @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Psyshock
- Roost
- Calm Mind
Substitute over the more common Ice Beam allows you to avoid status from Toxapex and Heatran and freely setup on some passive checks like Leech Seed Ferrothorn lacking Gyro Ball and Defensive Clefable. This set strongly wants Toxic Spikes support to wear down dark types that it cannot hurt.
