I run a D&D style Pokemon game for my family using Google Drive spreadsheets for the character sheet. This allows the bulk of the math to stay out of the way of battling and story telling while also allowing for the huge variation in Pokemon combat styles and personality displayed in the anime.

The system also allows for customized stat spreads. Want your squirtle to be just as powerful as a blastoise? Sure! Have a favorite Pokemon that gets held back because of a low stat pool? Not an issue now. It's really hard to play the core games after having so much creative freedom.
